To devote himself to writing in order to raise some money, Mr. Bedford rents a country house to find the necessary peace. It is on this occasion that he meets Doctor Cavor, who passes every evening under his window gesturing and talking to himself. Speaking with the scientist, Bedford discovers that he is working on a substance, cavorite, capable of shielding gravity. The two friends become and decide to go on an exploratory journey on the lunar surface, using a spherical shuttle built with the second batch of cavorite manufactured (the first, immune to gravity, is thrown into space by the Earth's rotation, together with the column of air. above it). On the Moon they discover that the satellite's atmosphere freezes during the very long night of the satellite and then returns to the gaseous state during the day: the plants that sprout and grow very rapidly during the lunar day left seeds on the ground to survive the night and germinate the next day. The Moon is also inhabited by sentient beings, living underground, from which Bedford and Cavor are captured after getting drunk by carelessly eating a lunar vegetable. The two manage to escape, but Cavor is caught while the other finds the spacecraft and manages to return to Earth. The spacecraft, left unattended, is lost as a young boy enters it and accidentally starts it, making it impossible for Bedford or anyone else to return to the moon. Later, Bedford discovers that Cavor is alive on the moon, has managed to communicate with the selenites, and is broadcasting his findings to Earth by radio. The first communications are his version of the lunar adventure with Bedford, then follows a description of the lunar society - similar in many respects to those of social insects - and finally the account of Cavor's encounter with the Great Lunar, the leader of the selenites. , a gigantic brain. The Great Lunar is shocked by Cavor's description of the Earth wars, and the last desperate transmission before the Earth scientist gets the cavorite formula.

Komm h?her herauf! Visionen vom Berg Zion, dem Garten Eden und dem himmlischen Jerusalem【電子書籍】[ Markus Herbert ]

Ein St?ck aus dem Tollhaus【電子書籍】[ Hans Herbert von Arnim ]

Empathy And Agency The Problem Of Understanding In The Human Sciences【電子書籍】[ Hans Herbert Kogler ]

A crucial debate currently raging in the fields of cognitive and social science centers around general and specific approaches to understanding the actions of others. When we understand the actions of another person, do we do so on the basis of a general theory of psychology, or on the basis of an effort to place ourselves in the particular position of that specific person? Hans Herbert K?gler and Karsten R. Stueber's Empathy and Agency addresses this other issues vital to current social science in an advanced and diverse analysis of the foundations of social-scientific methodology based on recent cognitive psychology. The book serves as both an introduction to the debate for non-academic audiences and as a catalyst for further discussion for serious theorists. Empathy and Agency provides a solid foundation of the fundamental issues in social and cognitive science, but also presents the most influential paradigms in the field at this time.

A Relic of the Revolution【電子書籍】[ Charles Herbert ]

In presenting the following pages to the reader, the publisher has no ambition to aspire to the character of an author, and what is perhaps more rare, he has no private interest to serve; he does not seek to gratify the fastidious part of the community, who would have more respect for the dress, or appearance, than for the subject matter. He is perfectly aware that the Journal is not without some imperfections; but it must be kept in mind that it was not written for the public, with an eye to publication, or to make a bookーbut simply as a memorandum of the events of each day. Yet when we take into consideration all the circumstances, it is little less than a miracle; consider the author: a youth of scarcely nineteen summersーthen the places where the records were madeーthe cable tier of a man-of-war, the gloomy recesses of a prison, or on board the battle ship, where three or four hundred men were crowded together for the purposes of strife and blood; then take into consideration the prohibition of all materials for writing in prison, the vigilance of the guards, and the frequent search made among the prisoners, and it becomes a matter of surprise, not that it has some imperfections, but that it exists at all, and especially that it was never interrupted. For the long imprisonment of more than two years, it seems to have been providentially preserved, for the purposes of bringing to light the hidden things of darkness, that those who should come after may be admonished and instructed. The reader will find the Journal free from all appearance of design or effort; it is perfectly natural; what is seen or heard is recorded with hardly a note or comment, from first to last; through their medium we are conducted through the hold of the prison-ship, and witness the privations and sufferings of the hapless victims; the prison hospital is thrown open to our inspection, not as transient visitors, but as witnesses of the daily occurrences; here we see justice and mercy meeting together; the walls, the bars, the guards, tell that here stern justice holds its victims, while the attendant physician, and gentle patience of the nurse, speak of Mercy’s visits, and pity. Then the prison doors grate on their hinges, and we enter; the vacant stare of the sons of Sorrow meet us, while their meager forms, sallow countenances and ragged habiliments, speak of their privations and misery; we seem to listen to their tale of woe, and hear them tell of happy homes and kind friends in their native land; we can almost taste their scanty and uninviting portions, and our sympathies become deeply interested, until we share in all their anxieties to obtain deliverance; we are sometimes almost suffocated while following the diggers in their excavations, to force a subterranean passage to the light of day and air of freedom; anon we are bounding over the fields as the minions of tyranny pursue us, until, weary and exhausted, we feel their ruthless hands upon us to drag us back to our gloomy habitations; then we feel the cold chill run over us, as we look forward to forty days and nights in darkness and solitude in the “Black hole,” on half the usual allowance of ordinary prisoners; we become acquainted with the “Two Fathers,” the messengers of Love and Pityーand while the donations continue we seem to enjoy a respite; hope and fear alternately rise and sink, until the donation closes, and transient joy gives way to deeper gloom, until some of the less determined seek relief on board the enemy’s ships of war, where they will be compelled to meet their friends and countrymen in the bloody strifeーa destiny more horrible to the mind capable of reflection, than the protracted miseries of the prison cell.

Exile within Exiles Herbert Daniel, Gay Brazilian Revolutionary【電子書籍】[ James N. Green ]

Herbert Daniel was a significant and complex figure in Brazilian leftist revolutionary politics and social activism from the mid-1960s until his death in 1992. As a medical student, he joined a revolutionary guerrilla organization but was forced to conceal his sexual identity from his comrades, a situation Daniel described as internal exile. After a government crackdown, he spent much of the 1970s in Europe, where his political self-education continued. He returned to Brazil in 1981, becoming engaged in electoral politics and social activism to champion gay rights, feminism, and environmental justice, achieving global recognition for fighting discrimination against those with HIV/AIDS. In Exile within Exiles, James N. Green paints a full and dynamic portrait of Daniel's deep commitment to leftist politics, using Daniel's personal and political experiences to investigate the opposition to Brazil's military dictatorship, the left's construction of a revolutionary masculinity, and the challenge that the transition to democracy posed to radical movements. Green positions Daniel as a vital bridge linking former revolutionaries to the new social movements, engendering productive dialogue between divergent perspectives in his writings and activism.

"Without fear and with a manly heart" The Great War Letters and Diaries of Private James Herbert Gibson【

Private James Herbert (Herb) Gibson was 26 years old when he volunteered for service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War. Born near Perth, Ontario and descended from Scottish settlers, Gibson enlisted against his father's wishes because he viewed the war as justified and felt he needed to do his part. "Without fear and with a manly heart" collects his personal letters and diaries as well as those sent to him by family and friends. They reveal his beliefs, hopes, realizations, and tragedies through an account of his contribution to the war.

The letters trace Gibson's wartime service from 1916 to 1919 from his enlistment and training with the 130th (Lanark and Renfrew) Battalion to his service on the Western Front with the 75th Battalion. Gibson was wounded twice, first near Vimy during the Gas Raid of March 1917 and again more seriously during a night patrol in July 1918 which ended his war. He also had to deal with tragedy on the home front from afar. Gibson's religious beliefs significantly influenced and sustained him through his darkest hours. He felt himself a gentle man caught up "on an errand the full consequences of which we did not realize."

The brig Dolton sailed from Newburyport, November 15th, 1776, and from Portsmouth, on the 26th of the same month, and on the 24th of December following, about nine o’clock in the evening, we were taken by the Reasonable, man-of-war, of sixty-four guns. As her cruise was over, she was bound to Plymouth, England. The first lieutenant of the ship was the first man that boarded us, and he ordered us all on board the ship as fast as the boats could carry us, and would give us no time to collect our clothes, promising us, however, upon his word and honor, that we should have them all sent on board the next day. Some of our company trusted to this assurance, but I thought it not best to do the like. I was stationed upon the main-top when we were taken, and had not so good an opportunity to save my clothes, as those below; yet I saved more than any of the foremast hands; for as soon as I found that we were taken, I made all speed from the top down to my chest. I broke it open and shifted myself from head to footーputting on two shirts, a pair of drawers and breeches, and trowsers over them; two or three jackets, and a pair of new shoes, and then filled my bosom and pockets as full as I could well carry. Afterwards, I found it was well for me that I did so; for when the clothes were brought on board, we found that all the best of them had been culled out, and nothing but a few rags and a dozen old blankets were sent to us.
After we came on board, we were ordered upon the quarter-deck, and from there down into the cable-tier, where we found very disagreeable lodgings, having nothing but the bare cable to lay upon, and that very uneven. Besides this, we were almost suffocated with heat. Being, however, very much fatigued, I slept about two hours, as soundly as if I had been upon a bed of down. When I awoke I crawled aft upon the cable, where was the sentinel, and spent the remainder of the night in conversation with him...

In the evening dusk of August 22, 1944, during an intense battle off the Norwegian coast, the HMS Nabob, one of the two Canadian-crewed aircraft carriers in the Second World War was struck by a torpedo on the starboard side. Among the souls on board was Dr. Charles Read Jr., a young flight surgeon who needed to draw upon every bit of his training and skills to fight against seemingly impossible odds to save the lives of his shipmates. These are his memoires.

Follow Dr. Read from his first, fresh-faced moments in Halifax as a newly minted Navy Medical Officer to a surprise appointment to be the flight surgeon on the much-lauded Nabob, the aircraft carrier thought of as the sign that Canada's navy had arrived in the big leagues of world sea power. In vivid detail, Read recounts his training (including a hair-raising ride in a fighter jet), his friendships (from Chizy, the affable wine steward, to the legendary fighter pilot Bobby Bradshaw), to his wonder at the beauty of Europe (even in the midst of wartime destruction) to his memorable encounters with those he met along the way (including two beautiful movie stars).

Read presents war as he saw it, the gut-wrenching carnage, the endless monotony, the baffling absurdity, and, shamefully, the inevitable tragedies that happen under incompetent command.

These memoires present an exciting and never-before-seen view into a ship that has, until this book, been little more than a footnote in history.

The Guardian Projects【電子書籍】[ James Herbert Edwards ]

On a chilly day in October of 1982, I uncovered an alien creature while trying to make an oil well location in Copperhead Hollow, West Virginia. Im not real good at driving a bulldozer but I managed to unearth the turtle shaped creature after he nicely, telepathically, talked me into it! It was a good thing that I liked Sci-Fi or I probably would have gone nuts! The creatures name is Pracon and he is a silicone creature from the Procyon system. I still see him occasionally. Not only did we communicate but before he left me the first time, he touched me mentally or I should say, he shocked me like a freakin electric line, leaving me with knowledge and brain power that I had never felt before. It was like he had supercharged my brain. I suddenly knew things I didnt understand, like images of other aliens, some quite frightening along with their strange dialects and languages. He also left me with a knowledge of the universe that included directions on how to get to different galaxies and planets as well as who lived there, how they lived, and whether they would love me or kill me. I gotta tell you, the nightmares I had for several months afterwards were horrible to say the least, yet nothing like what happened next.

Several months did go by, with the nightmares and such. People started talking behind my back that I was possessed for I would sometimes talk to them in Tharx, a truly universal language, and then look at them like I expected them to understand me. Or avoid me when my eyes turned colors and tables and chairs started moving around me. I, myself, often looked into the mirror while shaving and didnt really recognize the person looking back at me. Joan, my girlfriend, my sweetheart, stayed with me through it all, and in the process became part of the bigger picture.

Then one day a knock at the door produced a creature that was identical to the geologist I worked with, Rick, only this one wanted me dead. Had I not been on the phone talking to the real Rick, I sure I would have been killed that day and not just shot in the ass. But, using my new found intelligence I was able to paralyze the creature, a thing made of living tissue and metal, and get rid of its head before the damn thing blew up. Yes, it was freaky. And it got freakier.

The explosion drew law enforcement officers from all over as well as a group of alien Guardians from the planet Entimall, short, white colored humanoids, who helped me subdue another humanlike creature masquerading this time as a paramedic. Yet their purpose for coming to our planet was not to help save me but to see if I would help them save their own world. By the time they found out I did not know what a Guardian was, I was visited by another creature, an red Altairian, a devilish looking man named Crouthhamel. He was their commander and quickly sent them packing, threatening to remove their sex organs from their chests for their violation of landing here! Ouch!

Hes the one who enlisted me by first taking me to the backside of the moon and then sticking a Vega collar on my head. He didnt hurt me with it as its purpose was to educate not punish like some of them can do, he just tested me and taught me until the damn thing started smoking. Pracons imparted knowledge together with my own education and personality must have convinced him I would make a good Guardian for my sector of space. Thats when he gave me my very own spaceship!

He didnt really give it to me, more like offered me to it. The ship was actually a living being and quite capable of acting on its own. Unfortunately it was only the second one ever made and, are you ready for this, the first one kinda went nuts so they had to destroy it. As you will see, I probably should have made a note to myself about that. Did it stop me from enlisting,

Im Jim Edwards, a human; I fly a spaceship named Merlin, who thinks hes human. Since my last book I have acquired a full crew, full of what I dont know. My second in command, though technically not yet recognized by the Alliance, is the sole surviving member of a race of artificially constructed living creatures known as the Betapherim. My seconds name is Mephis, short for the devilish name, Mephistopheles. Then there is crazy Bill, the Teeber, who communicates by thought not word, and consequently has taught Merlin, Mephis and me how to do it, too. Bill also taught me how to use the power of the Claw, as in Claw of Catau, as in, Bills planet, home of the Teeber. It is a mental thing, so dont ask me to explain it, I cant. All I know is it works very well on your enemy, extremely well. Its probably a good thing I have the Claw because war breaks out again between the Alliance and the Tayhest and everyone thinks Im the guy to stop it. It seems there is a legend about the Bojaja, a powerful being known as the Drexa and a singular event also known as the Drexa. And Im supposed to be part of it, can you believe that? If thats not enough to give me a headache, a force known only as the Light appears out of nowhere and really screws with me, almost killing me at one point before disappearing, hopefully, forever. Back on Earth, also known as Tara, I find my true love, Joan, again, and find out she is also part of the great Bojaja Legend. We manage to stop a rebel kidnapping and visit ancient Mayan ruins. Taking a break in space, I find myself rescuing one of my space children, born to a Nack female, yes we did, and then shooting up the Lussecan home world because the bastards deserve it. And so the adventures continue as I find out there is a lot more going on out in space then just guarding my part of the galaxy, a whole helluva lot more. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
