Valentine T. McGillycuddy Army Surgeon, Agent to the Sioux【電子書籍】[ Candy Moulton ]

On a September day in 1877, hundreds of Sioux and soldiers at Camp Robinson crowded around a fatally injured Lakota leader. A young doctor forced his way through the crowd, only to see the victim fading before him. It was the famed Crazy Horse. From intense moments like this to encounters with such legendary western figures as Calamity Jane and Red Cloud, Valentine Trant O'Connell McGillycuddy's life (1849?1939) encapsulated key events in American history that changed the lives of Native people forever. In Valentine T. McGillycuddy: Army Surgeon, Agent to the Sioux, the first biography of the man in seventy years, award-winning author Candy Moulton explores McGillycuddy's fascinating experiences on the northern plains as topographer, cartographer, physician, and Indian agent.

Drawing on family papers, interviews, government documents, and a host of other sources, Moulton presents a colorful characterーa thin, blue-eyed, cultured physician who could outdrink trail-hardened soldiers. In fresh, vivid prose, she traces McGillycuddy's work mapping out the U.S.-Canadian border; treating the wounded from the battles of the Rosebud, the Little Bighorn, and Slim Buttes; tending to Crazy Horse during his final hours; and serving as agent to the Sioux at Pine Ridge, where he clashed with Chief Red Cloud over the government's assimilation policies. Along the way, Moulton weaves in the perspective of McGillycuddy's devoted first wife, Fanny, who followed her husband west and wrote of the realities of camp life.

McGillycuddy's doctoring of Crazy Horse marked only one point of his interaction with American Indians. But those relationships were also just one aspect of his life in the West, which extended well into the twentieth century. Enhanced by more than 20 photographs, this long-overdue biography offers general readers and historians an engaging adventure story as well as insight into a period of tumultuous change.

"Nancy McClure was a Dakota who worked against the Dakota uprising, and who sided cautiously with her white neighbors." -Oberg, Native America: A History (2015)
"McClure's account conveys how difficult the war became for mixed-bloods who were captives." ? Anderson, Through Dakota Eyes (2010)

The stories of those pioneers who have escaped from captivity among Native American tribes during hostile outbreaks along frontier settlements are full of harrowing interest, and one of the most intriguing is that told by Nancy McClure who happened to be of mixed white and Sioux heritage.

During Minnesota's "Sioux Outbreak" of August 1862, Nancy McClure (1836-1927) lived two miles from the Redwood agency, on the road to Fort Ridgely in a log cabin on a small farm. Unfortunately, the Redwood agency, Fort Ridgely, and any settlers in the vicinty were directly in the path of Chief Little Crow's war parties which swept through the Minnesota River Valley and near vicinity, carrying away any spared settlers as captives.

In describing her panicky attempt to escape when a Sioux war party had been spotted heading toward their farm, McClure writes:

"Woman-like, I tried first to save my jewelry, which I kept in a strong drawer. This drawer was swelled and I could not open it, and I was running for an ax to burst it, when nay husband said, 'Let it go they are ready to start.' So I took my dear little daughter, who was eight years old and my only child, and we started for the wagon. Just as I was about to get in everybody else was in I looked up the road toward the agency and saw the Indians coming. I was afraid they would overtake the wagon; so I declined to get in, and my husband got out with me, and we took our child and ran for the woods...."

In 1894, McClure wrote a series of letters to a St. Paul journalist describing her life as an Indian captive, which were published in the Minnesota Historical Collections under the title: "The Story of Nancy McClure, Captivity Among the Sioux." [See Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, Vol. VI, 1894] It is this 20-page work that has been republished here for the convenience of the interested reader.

Discover a new way to read classics with Quick Read.
This Quick Read edition includes both the full text and a summary for each chapter.
- Reading time of the complete text: about 5 hours
- Reading time of the summarized text: 19 minutes

The text is a detailed account of a woman's harrowing experience of being captured and held captive by Native American Indians during the 19th century. The woman, who remains unnamed throughout the narrative, recounts her life in the open-air, the brutal murder of her family, and the subsequent captivity she endures. She describes the harsh conditions, the constant fear, and the cultural practices of her captors, including their war rituals, medicine practices, and burial rites. The woman's husband is a significant character in the narrative, as she often reflects on their shared dreams and aspirations, which were brutally cut short by his death. Another key character is General Alfred Sully, a brave and skillful officer of the United States Army, who is known for his contempt for the Indians and his reckless indifference to danger. The key points of the narrative include the woman's capture, her life among the Indians, her attempts to escape, and her eventual rescue. The narrative also highlights the violent conflicts between the Indians and the white settlers, the brutalities committed by both sides, and the attempts made by the U.S. Army to rescue the captive woman. The message of the text is a complex one. On one hand, it portrays the harsh realities of frontier life and the brutalities of war. On the other hand, it also highlights the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The woman's determination to survive, her attempts to understand and navigate the cultural practices of her captors, and her unwavering hope for rescue are testament to her strength and courage.

Red Cloud, The Solitary Sioux: A Story of the Great Plains【電子書籍】[ Sir William Francis Butler ]

Far back as I can remember anything I can remember our cottage in Glencar. It was a small thatched house, with plenty of June roses and white jessamine trailing over two sides of it, through wooden trellis-work. The ground rose steeply behind the house, until the trees that covered it gave place to scattered clumps of holly bushes, which finally merged into open mountain, heather-covered, and sprinkled here and there with dwarf furze bushes. In front of the cottage the little lawn sloped downwards to a stream, the bed of which was strewn with great boulders of rock, which were bare and dry in summer, but in winter scarcely showed over the surface. Between the big rocks there were pools and shallows, in which trout rose briskly at the midges in the early summer evenings. Whenever I think of that cottage home now, it seems to me to be always sunshine there. There must have been dark days, and wet ones, too, but I can’t call them to mind. There was a large flat rock in the middle of the lawn half way down to the stream; one end of this rock was imbedded in the earth, the other leant out from the ground, giving shelter underneath. The only dark thing I can remember about the whole place was that hollow under the big stone. I used to sit in there on the very hot days, looking out across the stream upon the one road that led from the outer world into Glencar. When the weather was not too warm I lay on the top of the rock, looking at the same view. The road came into the glen over a hill that was four miles distant from our cottage; you could see the white streak crossing the crest of ridge, flanked on each side by the dark heather mountain. You caught sight of the road again as it came down the hillside, and here and there at turns, as it wound along the valley to the old five-arched bridge over the Carragh river, and then disappeared around the hill on which our cottage stood. When in the summer days I used to lie on the rock, or beneath its shadows, I was always thinking of the country that lay beyond the boundary ridge, the land to which the white road led when it dipped down behind the hill: that was the outside world to me, the glen was the inside one. As I grew older I came to know more of the outside world; I was able to climb higher up the steep hill behind the house, to get beyond the holly bushes out into the heather, and at last one day I reached the mountain-top itself. That was a great event in my life. It took me a long while to get up; the last bit was very steep; I had to sit down often amid the rocks and heather for want of breath. At last I gained the summit, and sank down quite exhausted on an old weather-beaten flat rock; I was just ten years old that day. Thirty years have gone by since then. I have climbed many a lofty mountain, lain down for weeks alone in forests and on prairies, but never have I felt so proudly conscious of success as I did that day. It was my first view of the outside world. How vast it seemed to me. The glen, my world, lay below, winding away amid the hills. All the streams, all the lakes, were unfolded to my sight, and out beyond the boundary ridge was the great open country. That was on one sideーthe glen side; but as I turned round to look beyond the mountain I had come up, I saw a sight that filled me with utter astonishment. Below me on that side there lay another glen, smaller than ours; then the hill rose again, but not to the height of the ridge on which I stood; and then, beyond the hill, there spread a great, vast waste of blue waterーoutーout, until I could see no more, where the sky came down upon itーthe end of the world. It was the sea!

Jessup Pike's vision was clear. When the War Between the States ended and the South began to produce again, his land in the north would quickly lose value as would the crops he raised and timber he harvested. While considering his family's future, he seized on President Lincoln signing the Homestead as an answer, seeing clearly how western land was cheap and could be had for little while ranching would be soon an answer to growing cities feeding their people.
Off fighting for the Union, his oldest son Mitchell could not scout for their new home and middle son Step was needed to help run the farm operations and his daughter Katherine was caring for all needful doing in their home while his wife ailed. Only his youngest son Adam could perform the required duty of finding good land with graze and ample water so the decision was made between Jessup and his wife.
Weeks past fifteen, a man in every respect, Adam Pike rode from the only home he ever knew, all the teaching of his kin packed between his ears and a pair of saddlebags loaded with what he gear could carry on the back of a willful, blonde horse named Molly. Built like a bull, owning a mind more keen than men three times his age, Pike faces a vast empty frontier emptied by a War draining every able bodied man east and finds in it opportunity for any with a willingness for hard work.
Meeting well-meaning sheriffs, brutally mean cowhands, and a rancher able to teach a youngster much about life, Adam confronts Indians intent on preserving their ways and cheating freighters hauling goods across brown prairie while encountering a sly, seductive widow with lessons of her own. Adapting to ways unfamiliar as part of discovering worlds he little knew existed, Pike puts to test values of honesty, loyalty, fair play and thrift to tame a wilderness and create for his kin opportunity for their futures.
Sand Hills Sioux is the first of seven books, each a self-contained story, describing exploits and challenges of a youngster driven to meet his duty as he rides a trail through the West. Crossing paths with the French invasion of Mexico, gold rush madness and bands of outlaws willing to murder to hold their position in a lawless Colorado Territory, Pike is forced away from his upbringing of decency into a life focused solely on survival until civilization catches up to him and his kin.
Meticulously researched and historically sound, Western Settler Saga reaches across philosophic, geopolitical and economic boundaries to become a new voice telling how America's West was settled.

Mrs. J.E. De Camp Sweet's Narrative of Her Captivity in the Sioux Outbreak of 1862【電子書籍】[ Jannette E. De Camp Sweet ]

"A Tale of captivity and daring escape." -Swann Catalogue

"Jannette met up with Lucy Pettijohn and the two hatched an escape plan...while Indian runners were in the village looking for more ammunition, the women and children crept away...." -A Fate Worse Than Death (2007)

The stories of those pioneers who have survived captivity among tribes during hostile outbreaks along frontier settlements are full of harrowing interest. Of particular interest is that told by Jannette E. De Camp Sweet in her 1894 narrative, "Mrs. J.E. De Camp Sweet's Narrative of Her Captivity in the Sioux Outbreak of 1862."

In August 1862, the Sioux of the Minnesota plains went on the warpath against white pioneers in the Dakota War or Sioux Outbreak of 1862. A young Caucasian pioneer woman Jannette E. De Camp Sweet (1833-1920) and her three young sons were captured. Even though pregnant, Sweet was forced to endure a forced march but, with the help of a friendly Sioux, she and her children would attempt a harrowing escape through the marshes and rivers to safety.

In describing her first encounter with a renown chief, Sweet writes:

"Chief Wabasha was sitting on a large white horse, looking as if just out of one of Catlin's pictures. He was dressed in chief's costume, a head-dress of red flannel adorned with bullock horns and eagle feathers, wings of feathers over his shoulders and down his back, great strings of beads around his neck and a belt of wampum around his waist. His lower limbs were clad in fringed buckskin and he carried a beautiful rifle across his lap, with two pistols in their holsters. He had no other arms. Every detail seemed to strike me as if photographed. I can yet see him, sitting like a Centaur, haranguing his men, and, as he rode up, he dismounted. Drawing his pistols from their holsters he approached us...."

In describing the moment she attempted her daring escape, Sweet recalls that "we crept out of the tent on our hands and knees, I with my baby clasped close to my breast. The children showed remarkable presence of mind, and no noise was made in any way. I expected every moment to hear the shot fired that would end our lives, but I knew that death was behind if we stayed...."

This handbook contains information about the Technical School, Sioux Falls Army Air Field, Sioux Falls, S. D., and its many services for the school personnel, including telephone service. Also, there is a map of Sioux Falls and city information which may be helpful to you. I am here at the School to help you get the best telephone service that is possible under difficult wartime conditions. Telephone lines are crowded as never before and the materials required to build more lines are going into military equipment and munitions. We will do our best for you with the lines and equipment available. Sioux Falls, largest city in South Dakota, is located at the falls of the Sioux river, named after the warlike Sioux Indians and called by them “Te-han-kas-an-data” or “Thickly-wooded-river.” White men found this part of the country occupied by the Dakotas, the most powerful member of the great Sioux family. Here these hard-riding, hard-fighting Indians hunted buffalo and battled intruders. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse were among their great war chiefs; Custer’s Massacre is their best known victory over the white men. Sioux Falls was first settled in 1857, but after the Sioux Massacre in southern Minnesota in 1862, it was abandoned until 1865 when Fort Dakota was established at this site. The present city dates from the coming of the soldiers who afforded protection for pioneer settlers. The Technical School, Sioux Falls Army Air Field, adjoins the residence part of Sioux Falls on the northwest. Started in the summer of 1942, it is one of the largest training schools of its kind anywhere.

Amore Sioux.
