Music and the Sonorous Sublime in European Culture, 1680?1880【

The sublime - that elusive encounter with overwhelming height, power or limits - has been associated with music from the early-modern rise of interest in the Longinian sublime to its saturation of European culture in the later nineteenth century and beyond. This volume offers a historically situated study of the relationship between music, sound and the sublime. Together, the authors distinguish between the different aesthetics of production, representation and effect, while understanding these as often mutually reinforcing approaches. They demonstrate music's strength in playing out the sublime as transfer, transport and transmission of power, allied to the persistent theme of destruction, deaths and endings. The volume opens up two avenues for further research suggested by the adjective 'sonorous': a wider spectrum of sounds heard as sublime, and (especially for those outside musicology) a more multifaceted idea of music as a cultural practice that shares boundaries with other sounding phenomena.

Sonorous Desert What Deep Listening Taught Early Christian Monksーand What It Can Teach Us【電子書籍】[ Kim Haines-Eitzen ]

Enduring lessons from the desert soundscapes that shaped the Christian monastic tradition

For the hermits and communal monks of antiquity, the desert was a place to flee the cacophony of ordinary life in order to hear and contemplate the voice of God. But these monks discovered something surprising in their harsh desert surroundings: far from empty and silent, the desert is richly reverberant. Sonorous Desert shares the stories and sayings of these ancient spiritual seekers, tracing how the ambient sounds of wind, thunder, water, and animals shaped the emergence and development of early Christian monasticism.

Kim Haines-Eitzen draws on ancient monastic texts from Egypt, Sinai, and Palestine to explore how noise offered desert monks an opportunity to cultivate inner quietude, and shows how the desert quests of ancient monastics offer profound lessons for us about what it means to search for silence. Drawing on her own experiences making field recordings in the deserts of North America and Israel, she reveals how mountains, canyons, caves, rocky escarpments, and lush oases are deeply resonant places. Haines-Eitzen discusses how the desert is a place of paradoxes, both silent and noisy, pulling us toward contemplative isolation yet giving rise to vibrant collectives of fellow seekers.

Accompanied by Haines-Eitzen’s evocative audio recordings of desert environments, Sonorous Desert reveals how desert sounds taught ancient monks about solitude, silence, and the life of community, and how they can help us understand ourselves if we slow down and listen.

Sonorous Worlds Musical Enchantment in Venezuela【電子書籍】[ Yana Stainova ]

El Sistema is a nationwide, state-funded music education program in Venezuela. Founded in 1975 by economist and musician Jos? Antonio Abreu, the institution has weathered seven jolting changes in government. Hugo Ch?vez and, after his death, president Nicol?s Maduro enthusiastically included the institution into the political agenda of the socialist project and captured the affective power of music for their own aims. Fueled by the oil boom in the 2000s, El Sistema grew over the years to encompass 1,210 orchestras for children and young people in Venezuela, reached almost 1 million people out of the 30 million in the country, and served as a model in more than 35 countries around the world.

Sonorous Worlds is an ethnography of the young Venezuelan musicians who participate in El Sistema, many of whom live in urban barrios and face everyday gang violence, state repression, social exclusion, and forced migration in response to sociopolitical crisis. This book looks at how these young people engage with what the author calls “enchantment,” that is, how through musical practices they create worlds that escape, rupture, and critique dominant structures of power. Stainova’s focus on artistic practice and enchantment allows her to theorize the successes and failures of political projects through the lens of everyday transformations in people’s lives.

How to Read Poetry Like a Professor A Quippy and Sonorous Guide to Verse【電子書籍】[ Thomas C Foster ]

From the bestselling author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor comes this essential primer to reading poetry like a professor that unlocks the keys to enjoying works from Lord Byron to the Beatles.

No literary form is as admired and feared as poetry. Admired for its lengthy pedigreeーa line of poets extending back to a time before recorded historyーand a ubiquitous presence in virtually all cultures, poetry is also revered for its great beauty and the powerful emotions it evokes. But the form has also instilled trepidation in its many admirers mainly because of a lack of familiarity and knowledge.

Poetry demands more from readersーintellectually, emotionally, and spirituallyーthan other literary forms. Most of us started out loving poetry because it filled our beloved children's books from Dr. Seuss to Robert Louis Stevenson. Eventually, our reading shifted to prose and later when we encountered poetry again, we had no recent experience to make it feel familiar. But reading poetry doesn’t need to be so overwhelming. In an entertaining and engaging voice, Thomas C. Foster shows readers how to overcome their fear of poetry and learn to enjoy it once more.

From classic poets such as Shakespeare, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Edna St. Vincent Millay to later poets such as E.E. Cummings, Billy Collins, and Seamus Heaney, How to Read Poetry Like a Professor examines a wide array of poems and teaches readers:

How to read a poem to understand its primary meaning.

The different technical elements of poetry such as meter, diction, rhyme, line structures, length, order, regularity, and how to learn to see these elements as allies rather than adversaries.

How to listen for a poem’s secondary meaning by paying attention to the echoes that the language of poetry summons up.

How to hear the music in poemsーand the poetry in songs!

With How to Read Poetry Like a Professor, readers can rediscover poetry and reap its many rewards.

The Order of Sounds A Sonorous Archipelago【電子書籍】[ Francois J. Bonnet ]

This study of the subtlety, complexity, and variety of modes of hearing maps out a “sonorous archipelago”ーa heterogeneous set of shifting sonic territories shaped by the vicissitudes of desire and discourse.

Profoundly intimate yet immediately giving onto distant spaces, both an “organ of fear” and an echo chamber of anticipated pleasures, an uncontrollable flow subject to unconscious selection and augmentation, the subtlety, complexity, and variety of modes of hearing has meant that sound has rarely received the same philosophical attention as the visual.

In The Order of Sounds, Fran?ois J. Bonnet makes a compelling case for the irreducible heterogeneity of “sound,” navigating between the physical models constructed by psychophysics and refined through recording technologies, and the synthetic production of what is heard. From primitive vigilance and sonic mythologies to digital sampling and sound installations, he examines the ways in which we make sound speak to us, in an analysis of listening as a plurivocal phenomenon drawing on Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, Barthes, Nancy, Adorno, and de Certeau, and experimental pioneers such as Tesla, Bell, and Raudive. Stringent critiques of the “soundscape” and “reduced listening” demonstrate that univocal ontologies of sound are always partial and politicized; for listening is always a selective fetishism, a hallucination of sound filtered by desire and convention, territorialized by discourse and its authorities.

Bonnet proposes neither a disciplined listening that targets sound “itself,” nor an “ocean of sound” in which we might lose ourselves, but instead maps out a sonorous archipelagoーa heterogeneous set of shifting sonic territories shaped and aggregated by the vicissitudes of desire and discourse.

Strange Isles, Sonorous River, is a novel inspired by a real occurrence in the south of France in the 1950’s, when an entire village experienced an inexplicable outbreak of physical and psychological disorders: normal men, women and children, gradually become psychotic as they experience horrific hallucinations, seemingly endless insomnia, and death.

An American writer, Damon Cristann, who, after wandering aimlessly about Europe for years, returns to Provence,’ in the south of France, in an attempt to recover his creativity in a place he once loved. He arrives, not only to find love with the mysterious sister-in-law of his publisher, Lydia Lazare, but find he has arrived just as the small French town of St. Martin descends into a mysterious medieval madness. Men, women and children, gradually become psychotic as the "plague" is discovered to be caused by the bread of the village bakeries. Hundreds of insomniacs wander the ancient, narrow streets of St. Martin, night after night, as the town gradually goes mad. All the characters, each wounded by some senseless tragedy in the past, confront again their suffering, trying to find meaning, each in his, or her, own way, including the atheist town doctor, Rousseau, who confronts the scholarly parish priest, Pere Jurrard, in the climatic scenes of the novel. The tragedy is played out against the backdrop of a region which was the crucible of the Cathar heresy-an attempt to explain suffering in the world in the 12th Century- the beginning of the Inquisition, and the slaughter of tens of thousands of Cathars by the "crusaders" from Rome.

The title of the novel originates from the poem, and the spiritual interpretation of the poem, a “Spiritual Canticle,” by St. John of the Cross, confessor to St. Teresa of Avila, and author of the phrase and concept, the “dark night of the soul.”
