History of the Sabbath and First Day of the Week Practice of Observing the Sabbath in the Seventh-day Adventist Church【電子書籍】[ John Nevins Andrews ]

History of the Sabbath and First Day of the Week is a religious book by Seventh-day Adventist minister John Nevins Andrews about the practice of observing the Sabbath in seventh-day churches. According to the Bible, the Sabbath is a day of rest on the seventh day, commanded by God to be kept as a holy day of rest, as God rested from creation. The seventh-day Sabbath, observed from Friday evening to Saturday evening, is an important part of the beliefs and practices of seventh-day churches. These churches emphasize biblical references such as the ancient Hebrew practice of beginning a day at sundown, and the Genesis creation narrative wherein an "evening and morning" established a day, predating the giving of the Ten Commandments. Seventh-day Adventist Church traditionally holds that the apostate church formed when the Bishop of Rome began to dominate the west and brought heathen corruption and allowed pagan idol worship and beliefs to come in, and formed the Roman Catholic Church, which teaches traditions over Scripture, and to rest from their work on Sunday, instead of Sabbath, which is not in keeping with Scripture.

In 'A Vindication of the Seventh-Day Sabbath and the Commandments of God' by Joseph Bates, the author passionately defends the observance of the Sabbath and adherence to the Ten Commandments. Written in a persuasive and informative tone, Bates explores the historical, religious, and moral significance of honoring the seventh day as the day of rest and reflection. Drawing upon biblical references and personal conviction, Bates presents a compelling argument for the preservation of these foundational principles in Christianity. This book serves as a valuable resource for readers seeking a deeper understanding of Sabbath observance and the role of the Ten Commandments in contemporary religious practice. Joseph Bates, a prominent figure in the Seventh-day Adventist movement, was a staunch advocate for Sabbath keeping and adherence to God's commandments. Bates' extensive knowledge of religious history and biblical teachings informed his writings, making him a respected voice in the community. With a background in seafaring and missionary work, Bates brings a unique perspective to his theological arguments and demonstrates a dedication to his faith. I recommend 'A Vindication of the Seventh-Day Sabbath and the Commandments of God' to readers interested in exploring the theological significance of Sabbath observance and the moral imperatives outlined in the Ten Commandments. The Sabbath as Rest and Hope for the People of God【電子書籍】[ Guy Prentiss Waters ]

A Short Study of the Sabbath from Creation to Consummation

When it comes to the Sabbath, Christians have different ideas on what it means and how to observe it. For many people, it is a day to go to church and have fellowship with other believers. What they often miss, though, is that the Sabbath is intricately tied to rest and worshipーboth of which ultimately point to the Lord as our creator and redeemer.

In this addition to the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, Guy Prentiss Waters offers an introductory study of the Sabbath from the creation of the world to the consummation of all things when Jesus returns. He shows how the Sabbath is observed through the major themes and genres of the Bibleーcreation, law, prophets, Jesus, and the apostlesーand how that applies to our lives today. Waters teaches us about the Sabbath's full restoration in the new heavens and the new earth and its continual reminder of the covenant that God has made with his people.

Written for New Believers and Seasoned Saints Alike: Perfect for laypersons, pastors, college and seminary students, and academics

Practical: Examines how the Sabbath is relevant to the church now as well as how it will be restored in the new heavens and the new earth

Short Studies in Biblical Theology: Part of a series designed to give readers accessible volumes on God's word

History of the Sabbath and First Day of the Week Its Old Testament Origins, and Observance at the Time of Christ, in the Early Christian Church【電子書籍】[ J. N. Andrews ]

The history of the Sabbath is fascinating: beginning with its origins in the Biblical Old Testament, we are taken through millennia of changing traditions concerning the day of rest.

Spanning more than six thousand years, this investigation of Sabbath traditions traverses the earliest manifestations which followed the story of God creating Earth. The Genesis story describes God making the Earth in six days, before resting on the seventh to take satisfaction in His creation. In the society of the Hebrews, the day of rest was widely implemented and recognized as part of the yearly calendar; references later in the Old Testament confirm this.

By the time of Christ, adherence to the Sabbath was already an ancient tradition. Its importance was emphasized by Christ's apostles, and its continuation in the Christian faith which developed in the years following the death of Jesus is described herein. The idea of the Sabbath taking place on a Sunday developed later, and the emergence of this idea is described herein.

Later chapters analyze how the Reformation of the church during the early 1500s affected the Sabbath tradition. With the Biblical lore becoming widely read, distinctions in marking the Sabbath occurred in different nations and denominations of Christianity. The final chapters of this book examine how the Sabbath was observed in Victorian England, and the United States.-Print ed.

The Sabbath and the Crystal Palace【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

This work was an attempt to settle the differences regarding Sabbath observance. The opponents agreed that the Sabbath was made for man, but they have a different opinion about its use and the benefits to be expected from its observance. With that in mind, the author has endeavored to resolve the debate on the manner in which the Sabbath was to be applied. Excerpt from The Sabbath and the Crystal 'The question of Sabbath observance is again brought before the public, and subjected to a new discussion. Points which we had considered as settled, and settled beyond the reach of doubt, are disputed. A change of circumstances is stated as requiring and involving a change of views; and the character which society is assuming in the present day, is said to justify a revision and reconsideration of the principles by which it has been previously regulated.'

The Sabbath at Home【電子書籍】[ Silas M. Andrews ]

"The Sabbath at Home" by Silas M. Andrews is a book that says a lot about a day set aside for rest and worship. Excerpt: It is not proposed to dwell, in the following pages, upon the arguments that might be brought forward to prove that the Sabbath is a Divine institution, established and sanctified by the Creator on the seventh day, after all his works were finished, and renewed to Israel on the descent of the manna. Nor shall I attempt to show, from the Scriptures, that the Sabbath is a Christian institution, as well as a Jewish ordinance; or call your attention to the satisfactory reasons we have for observing, as holy time, the first day of the week, and not the seventh. No controversy will be maintained with any who object to the Sabbath as commonly acknowledged by Christians. He who sincerely seeks for instruction has no need of such argument; he already believes the Sabbath is the Lord's, and that it is to be sanctified by a holy resting all the day.

The Sabbath A Day to Keep【電子書籍】[ J. C. Ryle ]

There is a subject in the present day which demands the serious attention of all professing Christians in Great Britain. That subject is the Christian Sabbath, or Lord’s Day.

It is a subject which is forced upon our notice, whether we like it or not. The minds of Englishmen are agitated by questions arising out of it. “Is the observance of a Sabbath binding on Christians? Have we any right to tell a man that to do his business or seek his pleasure on a Sunday is a sin? Is it desirable to open places of public amusement on the Lord’s Day?” All these are questions which are continually asked. They are questions to which we ought to be able to give a decided answer.

The subject is one on which “divers and strange doctrines” abound. Statements are continually made about Sunday, both by speakers and writers, which plain unsophisticated readers of the Bible find it impossible to reconcile with the Word of God. If these statements proceeded only from the ignorant and irreligious part of the world, the defenders of the Sabbath would have no reason to be surprised. But they may well wonder when they find educated and religious persons among their adversaries. It is a melancholy truth that in some quarters the Sabbath is wounded by those who ought to be its best friends.

CrossReach Publications

Sabbath and Sunday among the Earliest Christians, Second Edition When Was the Day of Public Worship?【電子書籍】[ David W. T. Brattston ]

According to Christian sources from before the middle of the third century AD, the ancient evidence is unanimous that, although there were a few slight differences as to how weekends should be observed, one thing is certain and was uncontroversial: the main day of the week for early Christians to gather and worship was not the seventh-day Saturday Sabbath, but Sunday, which they sometimes called "the first day" or "the eighth day," or "the Lord's Day." The booklet also considers (1) whether the Lord's Day replaces the Sabbath, (2) whether the Sabbath was abolished, (3) whether Sabbath-keeping is forbidden, (4) whether the Roman Catholic church changed the Sabbath to Sunday, (5) whether Sunday is to be a day of rest as well as the chief day of public worship, (6) a critique of sources and authorities on which Sabbatarians rely in advancing their contentions, (7) whether some Christians before Constantine observed Sunday rather than Saturday to prevent the Roman government from considering them to be Jews, who were allegedly persecuted before his reign, and (8) where readers can find translations of the sources for themselves. Focusing on pagan Roman and Jewish sources, this second edition considers whether Sunday-keeping began as a result of the Jewish revolts of AD 66-70 and/or AD 132-135 and examines the work of Samuele Bacchiocchi.

Green Sabbath and the Last Vista of Hope, The【電子書籍】[ Chinedu Daniel Obasi ]

Chinedu Daniel Obasi’s latest literary contribution, The Green Sabbath and the Last Vista of Hope, is the result of a careful examination of numerous newsworthy occurrences transpiring on the world stage and their apocalyptic implications. Readers will be soberly intrigued by how intertwined these occurrences are, and how they crystalize and verify the predictions made by Daniel, the apostle John, and other Bible prophets.

Obasi begins by highlighting several environmental and ecological developments and their parallels to what Jesus called the early birth pangs of end-time unfolding. From here he points to the responses from political and ecclesiastical leaders regarding these developments, and how this is all laying the foundation for the diminishing of religious and civil liberty, as foretold in Revelation 13.

While this well-researched book discusses many topics, including global warming, Catholicism, the old and new covenants, and Islam, the author skillfully ties everything together to alert as many as possible to the solemn times in which we live and the need to increase awareness and preparedness. However, his greatest emphasis is on the One who is truly in charge of the past, present, and futureーthe One in whom we can place our confidence.

The Seventh-Day Sabbath and the Christian Doctrine of Redemption is a book every Christian must have in their home library. The author tackles the biblical doctrine of redemption in a convincing manner and drives home the centrality of the Sabbath in redemption. Over the past hundred years, the witness of the sciences such as physics and biochemistry, including mathematics as well as the testimony of archaeology and history has put the skeptics of the Bible on the defensive. To this overwhelming testimony, the author adds the witness of recent fulfilled Bible prophecy. The author proceeds to show persuasively how recent fulfilled prophecies have proved once again that the Bible is truly the Word of God. Black Sabbath and the Rise of Heavy Metal Music【電子書籍】[ Andrew L. Cope ]

The definition of 'heavy metal' is often a contentious issue and in this lively and accessible text Andrew Cope presents a refreshing re-evaluation of the rules that define heavy metal as a musical genre. Cope begins with an interrogation of why, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Birmingham provided the ideal location for the evolution and early development of heavy metal and hard rock. The author considers how the influence of the London and Liverpool music scenes merged with the unique cultural climate, industry and often desolated sites of post-war Birmingham to contribute significantly to the development of two unique forms of music: heavy metal and hard rock. The author explores these two forms through an extensive examination of key tracks from the first six albums of both Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, in which musical, visual and lyrical aspects of each band are carefully compared and contrasted in order to highlight the distinctive innovations of those early recordings. In conclusion, a number of case studies are presented that illustrate how the unique synthesis of elements established by Black Sabbath have been perpetuated and developed through the work of such bands as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera, Machine Head, Nightwish, Arch Enemy and Cradle of Filth. As a consequence, the importance of heavy metal as a genre of music was firmly established, and its longevity assured.

Winner’s original Mudhouse Sabbath has sold 45,000 copies, been translated into three languages, and spawned a successful video study series. After her conversion from Orthodox Judaism to Christianity, Winner found that her life was indelibly marked by the rich traditions and spiritual practices of Judaism. She here presents eleven Jewish practices that can transform the way Christians view the world and God, including attentive eating, mourning, candle-lighting, and Sabbath-keeping. Since first publishing the book, Lauren has earned her MDiv and PhD, and become an Episcopal priest. Her thought has deepened and developed. This new Study Edition incorporates the complete original text plus primary texts from Jewish and Christian sources, and new material on each of the eleven topics. The result is a powerful work for Christians wanting to explore in depth and understand the Jewish origins of Christianity. “At a time when we are so aware of the differences between Judaism and Christianity, Lauren Winner’s book on what we can learn from each other is so refreshingly welcome.”ーRabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People
