Petrarch's Canzoniere Scattered Rhymes in a New Verse Translation【電子書籍】[ Francesco Petrarch ]

Francesco Petrarch’s Canzoniere (translated in English as ‘Scattered Rhymes’) is a collection of 14th century poems famed for their deep exploration of love, grief, spirituality and nature. Written over the course of forty years (approximately between 1328-1368), this collection includes 317 sonnets, 29 canzoni, 9 sestine, 4 madrigals and 7 ballate. These Scattered Rhymes almost always return to Laura, a women who Petrarch loves deeply, whom he first saw on a Good Friday. On this same day, some years later, Laura died. But Petrarch’s love does not wane, in fact at points it burns brighter. Il Canzoniere also serves as a valuable contemporary insight into 14th century religion and the role of the papacy in Christendom. Petrarch’s work is one of civilization’s most immaculate achievements. Michael R. G. Spiller regards Il Canzoniere as ‘the single greatest inspiration for the love poetry of Renaissance Europe until well into the seventeenth century’. Following his acclaimed translation of Dante’s Inferno, which ‘immediately joins ranks with the very best available in English’ (Dr Richard Lansing), Peter Thornton brings the poetry of Petrarch to the 21st Century in direct and luminous verse.

Not Scattered or Confused Rethinking the Urban World of the Hebrew Bible【電子書籍】[ Mark McEntire ]

The Hebrew Bible displays a complicated attitude toward cities. Much of the story tells of a rural, agrarian society, yet those stories were written by people living in urban environments. Moreover, cities frequently appear in a negative light; the Hebrew slaves in the book of Exodus were forced to build cities, and the book of Samuel’s critique of monarchy assumes an urban setting that supports that monarchy. At the same, time Ezra-Nehemiah makes restoration of Jerusalem and its wall a holy priority, and Genesis 1?11 (and subsequent references to the primeval narrative) show a much more layered view of the dangers and opportunities of the urban context. As the world’s population continues to move into cities and we debate the impact on human life and the natural environment, it becomes increasingly important to know how the biblical writers understood the ways in which urban life enhances and disrupts human thriving. In this book, McEntire offers a comprehensive and hopeful understanding of the Bible and the city.

He and his wife Randi served together as missionaries in The Anglican Diocese of Egypt. They live in North Carolina. John is working on a second novel.

"This dramatic story brings to life the closing days of World War II. John Wood captures the courage, faith, and honor of average citizens - American and Japanese - amidst the chaos and brutality of war."
- Garland Tucker, Author, The High Tide of American Conservatism

"John Wood has created a wonderful story which incorporates real history with romantic fiction in such a way to grab the reader immediately. It's a truly beautiful story of World War II, incorporating ethic, racial, and religious themes, while drawing the reader to the main premise of humanity, we are all the same and made in the image of God. John is blessed with a natural storytelling style in which his words roll over the pages carrying the reader to natural curiosity and wonder. It's a magnificent book and I highly encourage the reader to take to heart the underlying promise that love perseveres over everything else. A Winter in Retirement: Scattered Leaves【電子書籍】[ Hannah Blaney Washburn ]

“And this is the end of all our plans and anticipations for the winter? Oh, Mary, what shall we do through this long dreary season of nearly six months? No balls, no parties, indeed, no society, shut up in my aunt’s lonely house, with nothing to amuse us but the sound of the dismal waves, dashing against the rocks, the mournful wind, whistling through that forest of apple trees, and not a man to be seen but old Philip”ーand here the voice of the speaker was stopped by her tears which were, however, soon soothed by the mild and gentle voice of her sister. “Do look on the bright side of things, dear Susan,” said she, “you forget, how, when we were little girls, we used to love that orchard, how many merry plays we have had among those trees, and how many stories old Phillip would tell us; then, the beautiful shells we picked up upon the little beach, at the foot of the rocks,”ー“But that was in the summer, Mary, when you know it is pleasant out doors, and that was when we were so young, and so easily amused, but now it is so very different, and then Aunt Wilson is so very, very piousーOh; she will not let us read anything but sermons, or sing anything but psalm tunes.” This was, indeed, but a gloomy prospect for a gay young girl of seventeen, and it required more stoicism than Susan Morton possessed to view it with indifference. The illness of their father, the necessity of his seeking a warmer climate through the winter, and his wish that his wife should accompany him, were the reasons which had induced him to trust his daughters, during his absence, to the care of his sister, a widow lady of much respectability, who resided near the sea-coast, and, who, since the death of her husband, had devoted her time and talents to the education of her children, two sons and a daughter; and, it was after bidding a sorrowful adieu to their parents, and finding themselves shut up in the carriage, which was to convey them to their winter home, that this conversation commenced. Susan was the youngest of the two sisters, a lively beautiful girl, very fond of society, and always the life and animation of every circle. She had formed many gay schemes of pleasure for the coming winter, the winter after she entered her seventeenth year, which had been all dispersed by the gradual but increasing illness of her father, and she had listened to the arrangement which had consigned her to the care of her aunt through that season which she had anticipated with so much delight with a dissatisfaction and gloom, which prevented her from seeing anything pleasant in their winter abode, or seizing upon any circumstances to soften her disappointment. Not so with Mary; with as lively a disposition as her sister, she still possessed the happy talent of extracting pleasure from any situation, and enjoying herself under almost any circumstances, and now endeavored, with earnest kindness, to bring to her remembrance many little events of their early youth, connected with their aunt and her family, which would aid in restoring her tranquility, and she succeeded, for before their arrival at their destined home, Susan had joined in many a merry laugh at some pleasant recollection. The evening of a dull November day closed in before they arrived at the end of their journey, the monotonous dashing of the waves against the beach sounded drearily, and the chilly air, and the gloomy appearance of the sky made them welcome the bright light, which they knew, streamed from the retired dwelling of their aunt. The carriage now turned into the lane which led to the house, and they were greeted at the porch by the kind old Philip, whose hair seemed not a shade whiter, nor his face a whit more wrinkled than when, five years before, two lively little girls, they bade him “good-bye,” at that very door.

There is that ex-militant whose past continues to stalk his present; the wife who begins to dress like her husband after losing him to a crossfire. There is the boy who obsessively follows President Obama's India visit, hoping to hear him mention the 'K' word; and the man whose transistor triggers paranoia in his neighbourhood.Unassuming yet hard-hitting, Scattered Souls journeys through a destroyed Kashmir swaddled in the memories of its fragile beauty.

Cin?ma&Cie 28 Scattered subalternities: transnationalism, globalization and power【電子書籍】[ Ilaria A. De Pascalis ]

Who is the Subaltern in the current global frame? Has neoliberalism changed the experience of subalternity? How do subalterns write history and what kind of history is written about subalternity? Cin?ma&Cie’s special issue addresses these and other questions through various theoretical approaches. The essays argue for the importance of a multidisciplinary perspective and address issues of media representation from a variety of perspectives, such as visual culture, history, philosophy, and postcolonialism. They focus on contemporary subalternity, and especially on the migrant ? characterized by diaspora and condemned to invisibility by hegemonic power ? and the postcolonial subaltern ? who has now the possibility to express her/ himself in unexpected ways, in particular by using new media. The scattering and pervasiveness of media devices and gazes is discussed in depth in these essays, which delve into the dialectic between subaltern cultures and agency embodied in the subjects of representation.

Scattered Finds Archaeology, Egyptology and Museums【電子書籍】[ Alice Stevenson ]

Between the 1880s and 1980s, British excavations at locations across Egypt resulted in the discovery of hundreds of thousands of ancient objects that were subsequently sent to some 350 institutions worldwide. These finds included unique discoveries at iconic sites such as the tombs of ancient Egypt's first rulers at Abydos, Akhenaten and Nefertiti’s city of Tell el-Amarna and rich Roman Era burials in the Fayum.

Scattered Finds explores the politics, personalities and social histories that linked fieldwork in Egypt with the varied organizations around the world that received finds. Case studies range from Victorian municipal museums and women’s suffrage campaigns in the UK, to the development of some of the USA’s largest institutions, and from university museums in Japan to new institutions in post-independence Ghana. By juxtaposing a diversity of sites for the reception of Egyptian cultural heritage over the period of a century, Alice Stevenson presents new ideas about the development of archaeology, museums and the construction of Egyptian heritage. She also addresses the legacy of these practices, raises questions about the nature of the authority over such heritage today, and argues for a stronger ethical commitment to its stewardship.

Praise for Scattered Finds

'Stevenson has created a valuable treatise that informs the reader and demonstrates how the past is firmly anchored in the present.'The Society for Archaeological Sciences (SAS) Bulletin Online

'Scattered Finds is a remarkable achievement. In charting how British excavations in Egypt dispersed artefacts around the globe, at an unprecedented scale, Alice Stevenson shows us how ancient objects created knowledge about the past while firmly anchored in the present. No one who reads this timely book will be able to look at an Egyptian antiquity in the same way again.'
Professor Christina Riggs, UEA

Years Scattered Like Fallen Leaves【電子書籍】[ Stephen Saperstein Frug ]

In 1951, a pair of scientists at Cornell discovered time-travel. With the specter of the atomic bomb in the immediate background, they decide not to replicate Einstein's mistake of suggesting what might be a weapon to the political authorities. Instead, they decide to set up a clandestine research program, swearing all those who work on it to keep the secret.

Then, in 1991, a time traveler returns from 2031 with a disturbing message: no traveler and no message has ever come farther back from the moment in time when he left. No one knows why. All people know is that something happens on April 4, 2031, to prevent any news of the future.

This is the story of what happens next... if "next" is the right word for a narrative which, in the way of things, is necessarily non-linear.

Retcon is a mosaic narrative, a story composed out of other stories, with recurring characters and overlapping plots all forming a larger picture. It will be arranged in three movements, each made up of nine stories of approximately 15,000 words, which will be published as ebooks on a monthly schedule (with a brief break between movements).

Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered by the Grace of God【電子書籍】[ Lisa J. Heyer ]

This story of Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered by the Grace of God tells the unknown, the unbelievable, and the hurt and heartache that scattered my life in 2010 with my son Nathan's dive into addiction. His addictions from pot to pills would scatter and smother me for the next eight-plus years. This isn't only a raw look into addiction and the destruction it causes, but more importantly, it is a look into a story of God's love, hope, mercy, and grace that covered me and Nathan during these years in addition to being covered by friendships and prayers when we couldn't cover ourselves.

I learned in 2019-2020 while writing this story that there is an obvious thread woven within this story--that is, God was there in every detail along the way. I was scattered into pieces, broken beyond what I could have imagined, smothered to the point of true breathlessness, and yet covered by the grace of God each and every day.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

I am thankful, Lord, for the refining and redemption lived within this story. I have been covered by the grace of God!

9

Like Elvis, David Mills has left the building. It was a few short months ago, near closing time at the Tradewinds Lounge in St. Augustine, Florida, when he announced to the crowd Im going to find my fortune in the uranium fields of west Texas! They say its just lying around on the ground out there and all you have to do is pick it up! And he hasnt been seen since. Sadly, before he disappeared, no one had the opportunity to explain to him that there was no such thing as uranium fields in West Texas.
