Years Scattered Like Fallen Leaves【電子書籍】[ Stephen Saperstein Frug ]

In 1951, a pair of scientists at Cornell discovered time-travel. With the specter of the atomic bomb in the immediate background, they decide not to replicate Einstein's mistake of suggesting what might be a weapon to the political authorities. Instead, they decide to set up a clandestine research program, swearing all those who work on it to keep the secret.

Then, in 1991, a time traveler returns from 2031 with a disturbing message: no traveler and no message has ever come farther back from the moment in time when he left. No one knows why. All people know is that something happens on April 4, 2031, to prevent any news of the future.

This is the story of what happens next... if "next" is the right word for a narrative which, in the way of things, is necessarily non-linear.

Retcon is a mosaic narrative, a story composed out of other stories, with recurring characters and overlapping plots all forming a larger picture. It will be arranged in three movements, each made up of nine stories of approximately 15,000 words, which will be published as ebooks on a monthly schedule (with a brief break between movements).

Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered by the Grace of God【電子書籍】[ Lisa J. Heyer ]

This story of Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered by the Grace of God tells the unknown, the unbelievable, and the hurt and heartache that scattered my life in 2010 with my son Nathan's dive into addiction. His addictions from pot to pills would scatter and smother me for the next eight-plus years. This isn't only a raw look into addiction and the destruction it causes, but more importantly, it is a look into a story of God's love, hope, mercy, and grace that covered me and Nathan during these years in addition to being covered by friendships and prayers when we couldn't cover ourselves.

I learned in 2019-2020 while writing this story that there is an obvious thread woven within this story--that is, God was there in every detail along the way. I was scattered into pieces, broken beyond what I could have imagined, smothered to the point of true breathlessness, and yet covered by the grace of God each and every day.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

I am thankful, Lord, for the refining and redemption lived within this story. I have been covered by the grace of God!

9

Scattered Scenes of Sex and Violence【電子書籍】[ Benjamin Welton ]

"That was my first brush with death, the final form of violence."

It's a clich? that all literature revolves around sex and death, but there's more than a bit of truth to it. Even in our sanitized, civilized world, sex and violence, when we experience them, often turn out to be defining moments in our lives. Whether its losing our virginity to dealing with a bunny boiler, joining the military to witnessing a DUI, bloodletting and bumping uglies remain the anchors around which the human experience is moored.

Scattered Scenes of Sex and Violence is Benjamin Welton's comedic, frank look at lust and death. Comprising 14 episodes from Welton's own life, he relays his failed sexual escapades, run-ins with his own mortality, and more with brutal honesty and a clear voice.

This collection includes several stories published by Terror House Magazine in 2019.

Scattered The making and unmaking of a refugee【電子書籍】[ Aamna Mohdin ]

**A Guardian book to look out for in 2024**

'A compelling story from a gifted storyteller … In a moment where refugees are often talked about but rarely heard from, her voice breaks through' GARY YOUNGE

A staggering investigation into the costs and consequences of displacement, from a young woman uniquely placed to explore the refugee experience and its aftershocks

In 2015, Aamna Mohdin travelled to Calais to report from the frontlines of the refugee crisis. When she returned to London, and discussed what she had seen with her parents, their response surprised her: didn't she remember being a refugee herself?

Aamna was faced with a reality she had been outrunning for nearly two decades: that her parents had been refugees of the Somali civil war; and that her arrival in the UK aged seven had been preceded by an early childhood in a refugee camp, followed by years of displacement and desperation ? as her family, sometimes together but often separated, fought for a place to call home.

For the first time, Aamna's parents told her their story: of the lives they had built in the newly independent Somalia, and the shattering effects of civil war that followed. From London, she travelled to Somalia, a homecoming to a place that had never been home; before retracing her parents' flight to Kenya, and the Kakuma refugee camp ? the site of a very present refugee crisis, now three decades in the making.

Scattered is a staggering investigation into the costs and consequences of displacement, from a young woman uniquely placed to explore the refugee experience and its aftershocks. A powerful reportage, it is also an epic story of returns and reunions; and a joyful celebration of family and belonging.

'The only way out of the crisis of exclusion sweeping across the Atlantic Ocean is storytelling … In so luminously recounting the story of her family Mohdin achieves an imaginative breakthrough that everyone should read' SAMUEL MOYN, Professor of Law and History at Yale University

The Scattered Court Hindustani Music in Colonial Bengal【電子書籍】[ Richard David Williams ]

Presents a new history of how Hindustani court music responded to the political transitions of the nineteenth century.

How far did colonialism transform north Indian music? In the period between the Mughal empire and the British Raj, how did the political landscape bleed into aesthetics, music, dance, and poetry? Examining musical culture through a diverse and multilingual archive, primarily using sources in Urdu, Bengali, and Hindi that have not been translated or critically examined before, The Scattered Court challenges our assumptions about the period. Richard David Williams presents a long history of interactions between northern India and Bengal, with a core focus on the two courts of Wajid Ali Shah (1822?1887), the last ruler of the kingdom of Awadh. He charts the movement of musicians and dancers between the two courts in Lucknow and Matiyaburj, as well as the transregional circulation of intellectual traditions and musical genres, and demonstrates the importance of the exile period for the rise of Calcutta as a celebrated center of Hindustani classical music. Since Lucknow is associated with late Mughal or Nawabi society and Calcutta with colonial modernity, examining the relationship between the two cities sheds light on forms of continuity and transition over the nineteenth century, as artists and their patrons navigated political ruptures and social transformations. The Scattered Court challenges the existing historiography of Hindustani music and Indian culture under colonialism by arguing that our focus on Anglophone sources and modernizing impulses has directed us away from the aesthetic subtleties, historical continuities, and emotional dimensions of nineteenth-century music.

Scattered My Year As An Accidental Caregiver【電子書籍】[ Jana Panarites ]

In November 2009 Jana Panarites was scrambling to make ends meet in LA. Her career spiraling out of control, she didn't think life could get any worse until she learned of her father's sudden death two days before Thanksgiving. She flew east for the funeral, and was forced to confront her future head-on at the sight of her devastated eighty-year-old mother. After living her entire adult life in LA and New York City, the second generation Greek-American decided to move back into her childhood home in Maryland--determined to save her career and her one remaining parent. In Scattered: My Year As An Accidental Caregiver, Panarites takes readers on an unvarnished, hair-raising journey of reinvention, inspired by love and a dwindling bank account. Her tale of attempting to advance her career while attending to medical appointments, household chores, and a flood of grief-related emotions raises issues of family loyalty, the strain of caregiving, resilience, and the repercussions of a romantic marriage for those left behind after death. Fast-paced, compelling, and filled with dark humor despite the seriousness of the subject, Scattered sheds a much-needed light on the plight of baby boomers everywhere, eager to thrive in their own lives but put to the test by aging parents--and often unprepared for what lays ahead.

The Scattered Winds【電子書籍】[ Bill Fitts ]

The time of the Thunder Lord draws nigh: a promise fulfilledーor forever denied. In the land that men call Narne, evil is stirring. The battle of dark versus light begins anew.

Sokhal’s Star glowed in Kenrad’s hand as he held the pendant up.
“Come on, Kenrad.” Blumgar muttered aloud. “Time to fall back, lad.”
“What’s he waiting for?” Merkyn looked back at the Erramic archers. “If he doesn’t get out of the way, he’s going to get shot!”
The light of Sokhal’s Star went out. Kenrad staggered, sinking to his knees. As he fell, Pratha left his side and glided down the slope, muscles rippling under her fur. With an angry roar the Sand Cat made her presence known.
“Kenrad!” Blumgar lunged forward with Merkyn right behind. Heedlessly they charged down the slope. As Pratha struggled with the lead pirate, turning and twisting on the ground, a second pirate ran up screaming and bellowing. Sword in hand, he loomed over the writhing bodies of man and cat. The pendant in Kenrad’s hand spat out a tongue of light and the pirate burst into flame. His screams silenced everything else.

Scattered and Gathered Catholics in Diaspora【

This volume takes its title from the first-century Christian catechism called the Didache: "Even as this broken bread was scattered over the hills . . . gathered together and became one, so let Your Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth." For Christians today, these words remain relevant in an era of massive human movements (voluntary and coerced), hybrid identities, and wide-ranging cultural interactions. How do modern Christians live as both a "scattered" and "gathered" people? How do they live out the tension between ecclesial universality (catholicity) and particularity (distinctive ways of being church in a given culture and context)? Do Christians today constitute a "diaspora," a people dispersed across borders and cultures that nonetheless maintains a sense of commonality and mission? Scattered and Gathered: Catholics in Diaspora explores these questions through the work of fourteen scholars in different fields and from different corners of the world. Whether through reflections on Zimbabweans in Britain, Levantines in North America, or the remote island people of Chiloe now living in other parts of Chile, they guide readers along the winding road of insights and challenges facing many of today's Christians.
