A Scattered People【電子書籍】[ Gerald McFarland ]

The movement of millions of ordinary people westward across the American continent was one of the great folk migrations of all time, stretching over two centuries and thousands of hard-traveled miles. Using a canvas as broad as the country itself, Gerald McFarland turns this journey into a resonant personal experience by retelling the stories of five generations of a single, real familyーwho are, in fact, his own pioneer ancestors.

A Scattered People is a true-life saga that takes us from colonial settlements along the east coast to the California shore at the dawn of the twentieth century. Its cast is as rich as a historical novel’s: a born-again Christian farmer in eighteenth-century Connecticut; a Davy Crockettish rifleman in frontier Virginia; an infantryman at Antietam; a bold teen-age girl who forsakes Kansas for a New Mexico schoolhouse. They become our witnesses for the era’s key events: the American Revolution, the Indian wars, the Gold Rush, Bleeding Kansas and Harper’s Ferry, the Civil War, the Chicago Fire, booms and busts, political battles and technological upheavals. By fits and starts, by foot and oxen, covered wagon and rail, the succeeding generations make their way west, and we watch a family treeーand a nationーdevelop and grow.

What motivated men and women to take the risks of such moves, and what actually awaited them in each new home? By recreating in close focus that fundamental act of democratic aspirationーpulling up stakes and moving westーA Scattered People gives us an intimate and surprising new sense of the meaning of the American Dream.

She is Maud Gonne, the muse of writer William Butler Yeats. Yeats here returns as a ghost, after having been buried in southern France in January 1939 at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Ten years later his remains are repatriated to Ireland. He emerges from his grave to recount his thwarted love with Maud, a story blending with the movement for Irish independence in which they each played an integral part. Yeats' ghost has suddenly appeared as diplomatic documents have come to light, casting doubt on the contents of the coffin brought back to Sligo for a state funeral. Where did the poet's body go? Does he still hover 'somewhere above the clouds'? What remains of our loves and our deaths, if not their poetry? Maylis Besserie's exciting new work follows on from Yell, Sam, If You Still Can (Le tiers temps), translated by Cl?ona N? R?ord?in. In Besserie's second novel, she turns her attention from Samuel Beckett to another Irish writer, W. B. Yeats. The connection between Ireland and France is forged once again in the smithy of art, culture and the days at the end of life.

The Scattered Flock, the last volume of this new series of translations, contains chapters 91-120 that mark the disastrous end of the 108 heroes. The action in this volume can be divided into three parts: the campaign against Tian Hu, the campaign against Wang Qing and the campaign against Fang La. It is in the last of these that the heroes of Mount Liang begin to die. Their demise is as haphazard and casual as the scattering of the flock of geese when the Prodigy shoots them for mere amusement. But the theme of the vanity of human wishes, the emptiness of ambition, becomes prominent earlier. John Dent-Young graduated from Cambridge University and has taught at universities in Burma, Spain and Thailand and at the University of Bath. He is a writer and translator now working from his home in England.Alex Dent-Young graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University and University of Chicagp. Scattered to be Gathered Ministry to the Migrants【電子書籍】[ John Idoko ]

Scattered to be Gathered: Ministry to the Migrants

The world is witnessing invasions of peoples and cultures into Europe, Americas, Asia and Africa as a result of harsh economic realities, civil wars, terrorism and instabilities in certain parts of the world. In Nigeria for instance, The migration of northern tribes into the Christian South has created an ’emergency’ for the Church in the South. And from all indications, the Church is ill-prepared to handle effectively this sudden influx of tribes from “the ends of the earth” into her neighborhood. Instead of seeing the migration of the northern tribes into her orbits as opportunity to fulfill the Great Commission without crossing borders, some are perceiving it as a threat to the Church.

There is no doubt in my mind, that the writing of this book is divinely inspired. I believe that God has used John

Idoko to break this news to us. However, the question is: What next? Of course God does not give us breaking news to entertain us, but to recruit us for the needful.
The passion and burden of the author is palpable. The author is not just breaking this news with clinical
detachment. He is obviously a first responder that has a firsthand experience of the magnitude of the harvest.

His clarion call is heart-felt and sincere. Anyone that takes our Lord's command to go out and make disciples

seriously should heed this clarion call. I dare to say that all Christian leaders will find this book a treasure of inestimable value.

I pray and sincerely hope that as we read this book, our eyes shall be anointed with divine eye salve to see the

multitudes scattered around us. As we see the scattered, we must gatherthem in. For that reason, and that reason alone, has the Lord given us this breaking news and opened our eyes to see the scattered through His servant, John Idoko.

Pastor Sonny O. Wogu

Migrations, Missions & Diaspora Ministry

The Unreached People around Us "So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth" From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth."

Genesis 11:8-9. [Over the face of the whole Christian South] (Emphasis mine)

This book is part of the changing tune of the beating of the missions drum in our land. When the beating of the drum changes, a wise and attentive dancer changes dance steps as well. The tune of the drum dictates the dance. No one dances correctly if his dancing steps are in discordance with the

rhythm of the music.

In this book, analogically, God is the Drummer. Missions is the drum. Crises are the drumstick in the hand of God.

Christians, missionaries and all believers alike are the dancers. Migrations and missions are the current tunes

being beaten on the drum, not only in our country, but globally. The mission field that has suddenly moved on to our door steps is the dancing field. The clouds of witnesses above, comprising men and women, who have gone ahead

of us, are the spectators watching how we dance. And Christ Himself watches from the grand stand. How we

dance as individuals, as churches, as mission agencies to the tune of migrations is being watched keenly from above.

Whosoever dances or does not dance is being observed and noted. Whoever dance steps are discordantly out of tune is being watched. However we dance, we are all dancing, heading towards the grandstand finish.

John Idoko

Paperback: 422 pages
Publisher: Independently published (June 3, 2019)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1973358700
ISBN-13: 978-1973358701

Scattered Ghosts One Family's Survival through War, Holocaust and Revolution【電子書籍】[ Nick Barlay ]

When two Hungarian Jewish refugees landed by accident in Britain in the winter of 1956, they had little idea what the future would hold. But they carried with them the traces of their turbulent past, just enough to provide the clues to their past. Scattered Ghosts combines memoir, investigation and travel to resurrect 200 years of wars and revolutions, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire via two totalitarianisms to contemporary Britain. It is the story of an all but disappeared world told through the eyes of a single family ruptured by great forces, and occasionally brought together by cherry strudel. Through haphazard and fragmented possessions - a blunt-pencilled letter; a final photograph; a hastily typed certificate; a protecting document; a farewell postcard from a distant place; a recipe - Nick Barlay retraces the footsteps of the vanished. There is the death march of a grandfather, the military manoeuvres of a great uncle, the final weeks and moments of a great grandmother deported to Auschwitz, two boys' survival of an untold massacre, and codenamed spies operating in Cold War Britain.
The ordinary mysteries and emotional legacies still resonate today in the parallel lives of far-flung family members. Diaspora, division and cultural identity form the backdrop to the story of ancestors who walked barefoot from Eastern Europe to experience Communism and Nazism, and to outlive them both. Scattered Ghosts is a family history that explores the events, great and small, on which a family's existence hinges. How did one person survive and another die? How did a Soviet tank shell cause a revolution between sisters? How did two refugees escape an invading army? Where did successive generations end up? And, ultimately, where did the recipe for cherry strudel come from?

Penn County, Indiana, like all rural areas in the early 1900's, is in the process of changing forever. The horse and buggy days are fading away, as are the mores of the Victorian era. With WWI on the winds of the American landscape, the children of the one room schoolhouse begin to drift apart.

Four generations of the Krouse family, like many families, have seen their share of hard times as pioneers of the Midwest, working vast amounts of land. However, Will Krouse, a dairy farmer, has everything he's ever dreamed of -- until now. Confronted with a seriously ill wife, and four children too young to be of help with the family farm, he's on the verge of mental breakdown.

Doctor Earl Slayer Jr. is the son of the late Doctor Earl Sr., a kindly man who accepted pigs, chickens, and eggs as payment for his house calls. Doc Jr. is looking for wealth at any cost, and sees Will as a pawn to accomplish his goals, with Will's wife, Rebecca, as his prize.

Will and Doc are destined for a place called Long Pointe -- an asylum for the insane, a Victorian building hiding secrets inside the bowels of its inner sanctum. Doc has a scheme, and Will, unfortunately, gets entangled in its web.

Two of Will's childhood friends, twins who "flat-back" in the rooms upstairs at Honey Boy's Tavern, are his only outside confidants. Sheriff Wendell Gates, a lifelong friend of both Will and Doc, is torn between good and evil as Penn County's lawman.

"Scattered Harvest" is about men and women at their best and worst. It's a story about faith and hope, with a labyrinth of trials and tribulations sometimes devoid of any or all human kindness. A superb work of storytelling, "Scattered Harvest" touches the heart, the mind, and the soul from cover to cover.

Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered By the Grace of God【電子書籍】[ Lisa J. Heyer ]

This story of Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered by the Grace of God tells the unknown, the unbelievable, and the hurt and heartache that scattered my life in 2010 with my son's dive into addiction. His addictions from pot to pills would scatter and smother me for the next eight-plus years. This isn't only a raw look into addiction and the destruction it causes, but more importantly, it is a look into a story of God's love, hope, mercy, and grace that covered me and my son during these years in addition to being covered by friendships and prayers when we couldn't cover ourselves. I learned in 2019?2020 while writing this story that there is an obvious thread woven within this storyーthat is, God was there in every detail along the way. I was scattered into pieces, broken beyond what I could have imagined, smothered to the point of true breathlessness, and yet covered by the grace of God each and every day. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. I am thankful, Lord, for the refining and redemption lived within this story. Diaspora Missiology Reflections on Reaching the Scattered Peoples of the World【電子書籍】

For many years, cross-cultural missions were directed to people in the countries of their birth, generally in Majority World areas. Foreigners present among or around the intended focus of ministry were not viewed as part of mission ministry. Diaspora missions focus on these peoples, who are now actually and virtually in more accessible places. This book will help you understand the dynamics behind this accelerated movement of peoples from one region to another, biblical principles and precedents that guide ministry today, the application of social and communication studies, and actual cases of ministry to and with diaspora peoples.

Scattered Clouds New & Selected Poems【電子書籍】[ Reuben Jackson ]

Scattered Clouds: New & Selected Poems is a volume of lyrical, emotionally forthright meditations on love, loss, and longing. The poems are often sobering, but they are not, to quote Langston Hughes, "without laughter." Scattered Clouds contains the complete text of the author's award-winning first collection, fingering the keys; his nationally lauded poem, "For Trayvon Martin"; and his wry, unabashedly romantic suite of ruminations on a long-time and deeply missed friend, the late barbershop owner Amir Yasin, and his widow Khadijah Rollins. These poems, exploring Amir's late-life romance with Kadijah, became a national internet sensation. An introduction by poet Abdul Ali (Cave Canem alumni and author of Trouble Sleeping) places Jackson in his rightful context as a Black American poetry elder, who has influenced generations of younger poets with his musical wisdom as well as his poetry.

Keeping the Faith When Things Get Tough Peter’s Letter to Jesus Believers Scattered Everywhere【電子書籍】[ Jeff Doles ]

KEEP THE FAITH, CHANGE THE WORLD!

When times are hard, it can be very tempting to hold on to the world and let go of the faith. The apostle Peter certainly knew what that was like when he denied Jesus three times, mere hours after pledging unshakeable faithfulness. But with the reality of the resurrection and the power of the Holy Spirit, he learned how to do just the opposite ー to keep the faith and change the world!

In his letter to Jesus believers scattered abroad, Peter reveals not only how to keep the faith in difficult circumstances but also how to change the world by the new life that comes from Jesus ー a life of loving, giving and serving. This book is a study of that letter. In it you will learn about:

* The new birth, the new mind, and the new life believers have in Jesus

* The new kind of people we are called to be in Him

* The incorruptible Word by which we have come to know Him

* The indestructible inheritance He has for us

* What it means to be holy

* What true freedom is and how it transforms relationships

* How to walk in fervent love and find exuberant joy beyond words

* How to arm yourself with the mind of Jesus

* How to manifest the glory and dominion of Jesus

* How to stand firmly against our true adversary

* … and more

These are “bite-size” studies to help guide you through Peter’s letter, a little at a time. At the end of each study are focus questions to help you think further about the truths Peter brings. They are open-ended questions to allow for maximum personal reflection and group discussion.

Scattered Among the Nations Photographs and Stories of the World's Most Isolated Jewish Communities【電子書籍】[ Bryan Schwartz ]

“A beautifully presented book on Jewish diversity around the world . . . opens windows into lives from the hills of Portugal to the plains of Africa.” ーThe Jerusalem Post

With vibrant photographs and intricate accounts Scattered Among the Nations tells the story of the world’s most isolated Jewish communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Former Soviet Union and the margins of Europe. Over two thousand years ago, a shipwreck left seven Jewish couples stranded off India’s Konkan Coast, south of Bombay. Those hardy survivors stayed, built a community, and founded one of the fascinating groups described in this bookーthe Bene Israel of India’s Maharasthra Province. This story is unique, but it is not unusual. We have all heard the phrase “the lost tribes of Israel,” but never has the truth and wonder of the Diaspora been so lovingly and richly illustrated. To create this amazing chronicle of faith and resilience, the authors visited Jews in thirty countries across five continents, hearing origin stories and family histories that stretch back for millennia.

“Beautiful, even breathtaking . . . a Jewish (Inter) National Geographic, wisely reminding us that the strategies for survival of Jews in distant lands may be relevant to our own.” ーRabbi Lawrence Kushner, Emanu-El Scholar at Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco and author of I’m God; You’re Not

“This exquisite book is a gift to the Jewish people, dramatically stretching our understanding of ‘Jewish’ . . .
However, when I was free to venture outside, I’d observe as birds glide through the sky, insects crawling to and from their nest across blades of grass, or over vegetation in my mother’s garden. I spent hours just lying in the grass, discerning abstract objects as the clouds changed form. I wasn’t concerned about UV rays, sun block or getting sunburned in those days. I recall sitting for hours, in total amazement, observing nature. I was a nature geek. While many of my friends were playing with dolls or imagining moments with Prince Charming and weddings in white gowns, I enjoyed dreaming of diving into the shores of warm Caribbean seas, visiting the world’s majestic structures, or motorcycle racing spectacular ruins deep in the rain forest. Scattered to the Winds【電子書籍】[ Joy Thomas ]

‘Scattered to the Winds’ pursues Gee as she navigates her way through a life packed with secrets. This life entwines with her husband Alfred, an Irish sailor Michael and Dennis, a small town lad from the wheatbelt of Western Australia. Set towards the end of the Second World War. It ranges from Fremantle to areas of the Pacific war zone and back to Fremantle. It continues to the “Golden West’s” Wheatbelt region after the war is over. Gee has a secret. It isn’t a secret about death and dire consequences. Yes, she has a secret in fact she has more than one, but it’s about fighting for her own existence, realising the futility of her love and of surviving a life that resulted in a woman needing to leave her children behind. Did the circumstances force her into this decision or did she decide it was the best for all? Choices or fate. I have no idea. Recollections of her own childhood defined a difficult woman to know. She had learnt early on how to manipulate any circumstances to her advantage in which she found herself. Running from her memories and never facing her choices enabled her to move on to make a new life. Over the time she changed her name, her age, her look, but her personality and her loud laugh stayed the same. With Gee never truly finding a sense of peace.

Since it was never colonized ? aside from the Italian occupation of 1936-1941 ? Ethiopia’s economy and society were not directly impacted by the ebb and flow of the global economy, and thus never generated international migration. Beginning in the 1970s, due to factors such as famine, rural poverty, civil war, and political repression, an unprecedented number of Ethiopian migrants began to leave their country in search of better, more secure lives. Today, this diaspora constitutes a distinctive community dispersed across the world, but bound by a common feeling of collectiveness and a shared history of the homeland.

The contributors to this volume draw their work from a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields and provide new critical insight on Ethiopian migrants and their diaspora communities. What has emerged from these scholarly works is the recognition that the Ethiopian diaspora ? although separated by oceans and nations, by politics, ethnicity, class, gender and age ? are carving out a social and material world born out of their particular circumstances both "here" and "there". This book was originally published as a special issue of African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal.

Scattered Graves The Civil War Campaigns of Confederate Brigadier General and Cherokee Chief Stand Watie【電子書籍】[ COL USA (RET) ROY SULLIVAN ]

Although depicted on a U.S. postage stamp and post card, Confederate Brigadier General and Cherokee Chief Stand Watie is virtually unknown to readers. The only Indian to be promoted to general on either side of the civil war, Watie was also the last Confederate general to surrender to Union forces. This book traces his skirmishes and battles--some victories, some defeats--during that terrible war. Pea Ridge was the largest battle west of the Mississippi where Watie led his Cherokee Mounted Rifles regiment. Later, Watie became the first cavalry commander to capture a Union ship, the J.R. Williams, underway in the Arkansas River. After his surrender to a Union commissioner, Watie--a man called by events and his Cherokee people to uncommon valor and leadership--continued to represent and inspire his people during the bitter period of reconstruction in the Indian Territory which eventually became the state of Oklahoma.

Scattered Resistance V3 - Setting In is the early poetry of the Wetdryvac, mostly 1991, though a couple poems are guesswork as to date. Modes expand here a bit, with some walkabout in spacing and dynamics, most of which have been reformatted for ePub and ease of reading. It's here the vac discovers comfortable forms, and begins moving in the patterns it will return to a dozen and more years later.
