Not Scattered or Confused Rethinking the Urban World of the Hebrew Bible【電子書籍】[ Mark McEntire ]

The Hebrew Bible displays a complicated attitude toward cities. Much of the story tells of a rural, agrarian society, yet those stories were written by people living in urban environments. Moreover, cities frequently appear in a negative light; the Hebrew slaves in the book of Exodus were forced to build cities, and the book of Samuel’s critique of monarchy assumes an urban setting that supports that monarchy. At the same, time Ezra-Nehemiah makes restoration of Jerusalem and its wall a holy priority, and Genesis 1?11 (and subsequent references to the primeval narrative) show a much more layered view of the dangers and opportunities of the urban context. As the world’s population continues to move into cities and we debate the impact on human life and the natural environment, it becomes increasingly important to know how the biblical writers understood the ways in which urban life enhances and disrupts human thriving. In this book, McEntire offers a comprehensive and hopeful understanding of the Bible and the city.

A Winter in Retirement: Scattered Leaves【電子書籍】[ Hannah Blaney Washburn ]

“And this is the end of all our plans and anticipations for the winter? Oh, Mary, what shall we do through this long dreary season of nearly six months? No balls, no parties, indeed, no society, shut up in my aunt’s lonely house, with nothing to amuse us but the sound of the dismal waves, dashing against the rocks, the mournful wind, whistling through that forest of apple trees, and not a man to be seen but old Philip”ーand here the voice of the speaker was stopped by her tears which were, however, soon soothed by the mild and gentle voice of her sister. “Do look on the bright side of things, dear Susan,” said she, “you forget, how, when we were little girls, we used to love that orchard, how many merry plays we have had among those trees, and how many stories old Phillip would tell us; then, the beautiful shells we picked up upon the little beach, at the foot of the rocks,”ー“But that was in the summer, Mary, when you know it is pleasant out doors, and that was when we were so young, and so easily amused, but now it is so very different, and then Aunt Wilson is so very, very piousーOh; she will not let us read anything but sermons, or sing anything but psalm tunes.” This was, indeed, but a gloomy prospect for a gay young girl of seventeen, and it required more stoicism than Susan Morton possessed to view it with indifference. The illness of their father, the necessity of his seeking a warmer climate through the winter, and his wish that his wife should accompany him, were the reasons which had induced him to trust his daughters, during his absence, to the care of his sister, a widow lady of much respectability, who resided near the sea-coast, and, who, since the death of her husband, had devoted her time and talents to the education of her children, two sons and a daughter; and, it was after bidding a sorrowful adieu to their parents, and finding themselves shut up in the carriage, which was to convey them to their winter home, that this conversation commenced. Susan was the youngest of the two sisters, a lively beautiful girl, very fond of society, and always the life and animation of every circle. She had formed many gay schemes of pleasure for the coming winter, the winter after she entered her seventeenth year, which had been all dispersed by the gradual but increasing illness of her father, and she had listened to the arrangement which had consigned her to the care of her aunt through that season which she had anticipated with so much delight with a dissatisfaction and gloom, which prevented her from seeing anything pleasant in their winter abode, or seizing upon any circumstances to soften her disappointment. Not so with Mary; with as lively a disposition as her sister, she still possessed the happy talent of extracting pleasure from any situation, and enjoying herself under almost any circumstances, and now endeavored, with earnest kindness, to bring to her remembrance many little events of their early youth, connected with their aunt and her family, which would aid in restoring her tranquility, and she succeeded, for before their arrival at their destined home, Susan had joined in many a merry laugh at some pleasant recollection. The evening of a dull November day closed in before they arrived at the end of their journey, the monotonous dashing of the waves against the beach sounded drearily, and the chilly air, and the gloomy appearance of the sky made them welcome the bright light, which they knew, streamed from the retired dwelling of their aunt. The carriage now turned into the lane which led to the house, and they were greeted at the porch by the kind old Philip, whose hair seemed not a shade whiter, nor his face a whit more wrinkled than when, five years before, two lively little girls, they bade him “good-bye,” at that very door.

It was the 1990s. The army descended upon Kashmir to quell a massive armed rebellion against Indian rule. They entered not just the land, but also the lives of its people, fracturing their idea of home and punctuating their days and nights with curfews. This extraordinary collection brings together the stories of some of those people probing the quandaries of their precarious existence. There is that ex-militant whose past continues to stalk his present; the wife who begins to dress like her husband after losing him to a crossfire. There is the boy who obsessively follows President Obama's India visit, hoping to hear him mention the 'K' word; and the man whose transistor triggers paranoia in his neighbourhood.Unassuming yet hard-hitting, Scattered Souls journeys through a destroyed Kashmir swaddled in the memories of its fragile beauty.

The Scattered Family Parenting, African Migrants, and Global Inequality【電子書籍】[ Cati Coe ]

Today’s unprecedented migration of people around the globe in search of work has had a widespread and troubling result: the separation of families. In The Scattered Family, Cati Coe offers a sophisticated examination of this phenomenon among Ghanaians living in Ghana and abroad. Challenging oversimplified concepts of globalization as a wholly unchecked force, she details the diverse and creative ways Ghanaian families have adapted long-standing familial practices to a contemporary, global setting.

Drawing on ethnographic and archival research, Coe uncovers a rich and dynamic set of familial concepts, habits, relationships, and expectationsーwhat she calls repertoiresーthat have developed over time, through previous encounters with global capitalism. Separated immigrant families, she demonstrates, use these repertoires to help themselves navigate immigration law, the lack of child care, and a host of other problems, as well as to help raise children and maintain relationships the best way they know how. Examining this complex interplay between the local and global, Coe ultimately argues for a rethinking of what family itself means.

Scattered Under the Rising Sun The Gordon Highlanders in the Far East, 1941?1945【電子書籍】[ Stewart Mitchell ]

The harrowing true story of the Scottish battalion that spent over three years in Japanese captivity during World War II.

Posted to Singapore in 1937 with their families, the members of the 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders found themselves fighting bravely when the Japanese invaded Malaya in December 1941. But by mid-February came the surrender of Singapore, and those who were not killed became POWs.

After initial incarceration in Singapore, the Gordons were dispersed to work on the famous Thai-Burma railway, in the mines of Taiwan and Japan, and on other slave labor projects. The conditions they existed under defy modern comprehension. Others died trapped in hell-ships torpedoed by allied submarines. Of the thousand men involved initially, over four hundred had died before liberation in summer 1945. Despite their diverse backgrounds, all the men had been bound by close regimental spirit, and all suffered hard labor, starvation, brutality, and tropical diseases. Rank was no protection from death.

The author of this history has researched the plight of these extraordinary men, so many of whom never saw their native Scotland again. Despite the grim conditions, he captures the strong collective regimental spirit and the humor and cooperation that saved so many who would otherwise have perished. This is an inspiring tale of courage and survival against appalling odds.

Scattered Scenes of Sex and Violence【電子書籍】[ Benjamin Welton ]

"That was my first brush with death, the final form of violence."

It's a clich? that all literature revolves around sex and death, but there's more than a bit of truth to it. Even in our sanitized, civilized world, sex and violence, when we experience them, often turn out to be defining moments in our lives. Whether its losing our virginity to dealing with a bunny boiler, joining the military to witnessing a DUI, bloodletting and bumping uglies remain the anchors around which the human experience is moored.

Scattered Scenes of Sex and Violence is Benjamin Welton's comedic, frank look at lust and death. Comprising 14 episodes from Welton's own life, he relays his failed sexual escapades, run-ins with his own mortality, and more with brutal honesty and a clear voice.

This collection includes several stories published by Terror House Magazine in 2019.

Long before the Romans occupied the Iberian Peninsula the Celtic peoples lived upon this land. Early on, these peoples living in what is now modern day Galicia pilgrimaged east to west traveling ancient paths through the Galician mountain ranges to the locale the Romans would name Cape Finisterre, or Earth’s End. Legend says that on this spit of land the Celts would make offerings at the Ara Solis, an altar to the dying sun. Standing in that place, watching the sun sink into the sea the traveling pilgrim understands why. Legend says that following the ascension of the Christ the Apostle James traveled to the Iberian Peninsula to preach to the indigenous peoples the Good News of Jesus. About the year ad 800 the story tells us that the bones of Sant Iago (Saint James) were discovered by the hermit Pelagius. The city which grew in this place is called Santiago de Compostela, or Saint James in the Field of Stars. Soon Christian peoples began to walk the path towards Santiago to visit with Saint James then continued on to Cape Finisterre. Over millennia this way has become The Way, a sacred path imbued with the prayers and hopes of millions. In recent years the number of travelers on the Way has increased exponentially. While the Camino has many routes originating from all over Europe, the most popular route (called the French Way) begins in the town of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port located on the French side of the Pyrenees Mountains twelve miles east of the Spanish border. Traveling over the Pyrenees Mountains, across the high plains called the meseta, and back into the Galician mountain ranges, the Camino ends approximately eight hundred kilometers later in Santiago. On June 1st, 2014 Father Kevin Johnson, an Episcopal priest, was dropped off at an airport in North Carolina. Two airplanes, one train, and a bus later he found myself standing in a parking lot in St. Jean. On June 3rd, he put on his boots, left the hotel, hoisted his pack, and began to walk. Forty days later he would arrive in Santiago, twenty-five pounds lighter and much fuller of spirit. Fr. Johnson observes that “…the Way of Saint James challenges us, asking those who dare to step upon her path to delve deep into the assumed truths of how we are and what we do.” Illustrated with splendid photography, this series of reflections offers his discovered truths about God, people, places, and things encountered along the Way. Come along the journey and we'll where the Way carries us.
