Sensory Parenting - The Elementary Years School Years Are Easier when Your Child's Senses Are Happy!【電子書籍】[ Britt Collins ]

A child's sensory system affects their ability to learn, play, socialize, and function. Maybe a child isn't able to sit still in class because his shirt tag is bothering him, or isn't able to play with other children because his balance is off and other kids make him feel dizzy.

Britt Collins, MS,OTR/L and Jackie Linder-Olson, an occupational therapist and parent team, have organized and combined parenting information along with sensory integration methods, tips, and solutions. Beginning with the age of five, Britt and Jackie walk parents through everyday situations and duties all the way through your child's elementary years. They explain the underlying reasons beneath your child's negative behaviors and the often simple fixes (sometimes not so easy, but steps that will lead you towards success). Working together, you will find that parenting can be more enjoyable if you address or avoid certain sensory situations or prepare for them accordingly. We're here to help every step of the way!

Ghosts in the Schoolyard Racism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side【電子書籍】[ Eve L. Ewing ]

“Failing schools. Underprivileged schools. Just plain bad schools.”

That’s how Eve L. Ewing opens Ghosts in the Schoolyard: describing Chicago Public Schools from the outside. The way politicians and pundits and parents of kids who attend other schools talk about them, with a mix of pity and contempt.

But Ewing knows Chicago Public Schools from the inside: as a student, then a teacher, and now a scholar who studies them. And that perspective has shown her that public schools are not buildings full of failuresーthey’re an integral part of their neighborhoods, at the heart of their communities, storehouses of history and memory that bring people together.

Never was that role more apparent than in 2013 when Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced an unprecedented wave of school closings. Pitched simultaneously as a solution to a budget problem, a response to declining enrollments, and a chance to purge bad schools that were dragging down the whole system, the plan was met with a roar of protest from parents, students, and teachers. But if these schools were so bad, why did people care so much about keeping them open, to the point that some would even go on a hunger strike?

Ewing’s answer begins with a story of systemic racism, inequality, bad faith, and distrust that stretches deep into Chicago history. Rooting her exploration in the historic African American neighborhood of Bronzeville, Ewing reveals that this issue is about much more than just schools. Black communities see the closing of their schoolsーschools that are certainly less than perfect but that are theirsーas one more in a long line of racist policies. The fight to keep them open is yet another front in the ongoing struggle of black people in America to build successful lives and achieve true self-determination.

Case Studies from North America, Scandinavia, Japan, and Great Britain demonstrate natural outdoor teaching environment that support hand-on learning in science, math, language, and art in ways that nurture healthy imagination and socialization

Asphalt to Ecosystems is a compelling color guidebook for designing and building natural schoolyard environments that enhance childhood learning and play experiences while providing connection with the natural world. With this book, Danks broadens our notion of what a well-designed schoolyard should be, taking readers on a journey from traditional, ordinary grassy fields and asphalt, to explore the vibrant and growing movement to "green" school grounds in the United States and around the world. This book documents exciting green schoolyard examples from almost 150 schools in 11 countries, illustrating that a great many things are possible on school grounds when they are envisioned as outdoor classrooms for hands-on learning and play.

The book's 500 vivid, color photographs showcase some of the world's most innovative green schoolyards including: edible gardens with fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, honey bees, and outdoor cooking facilities; wildlife habitats with prairie grasses and ponds, or forest and desert ecosystems; schoolyard watershed models, rainwater catchment systems and waste-water treatment wetlands; renewable energy systems that power landscape features, or the whole school; waste-as-a-resource projects that give new life to old materials in beautiful ways; K-12 curriculum connections for a wide range of disciplines from science and math to art and social studies; creative play opportunities that diversify school ground recreational options and encourage children to run, hop, skip, jump, balance, slide, and twirl, as well as explore the natural world first hand. The book grounds these examples in a practical framework that illustrates simple landscape design choices that all schools can use to make their schoolyards more comfortable, enjoyable and beautiful, and describes a participatory design process that schools can use to engage their school communities in transforming their own asphalt into ecosystems.

The Quirky Kampung Tales Of Ijan And His Early School Years【電子書籍】[ Saiful Lizan Muhamed ]

The book is generally written in a humorous tone but there are poignant moments in the book where the narration takes on a more serious or sad tone where they are needed. The book is about the growing up years of a boy called Ijan who grew up in a fast-developing Singapore in the 1970s and 1980s in two different villages or “kampung” as they are called in Singapore. Although the concept or notion of a “kampung” is now gone in the developed city of Singapore, the book invites the readers to take a journey back to a historical Singapore as a backdrop. Ingrained in the ways of the village, Ijan the “kampung” boy had also attended schools which were very structured and the schools were where his parents were teachers. As a “kampung” boy, Ijan was accustomed to his roaming ways and as a teacher’s son, he was expected to behave. This was further compounded where it seemed Ijan’s DNA had been “hardwired” with the characteristics of what was known in the village as a “pusar dua” anomaly. He was born with two hair whirls at the back of his head! This led to a somewhat disorderly hair disposition for Ijan but more significantly, the villagers believed this anomaly brought with it certain traits to the “afflicted” boy. It was believed that a “pusar dua” boy would be a maverick of sorts, hyperactive and stubborn to say the least. He was also believed to be blessed with a very endearing character, especially to animals. The interesting contrast in environment, character and expectations are the themes that carry the narration in this book with Ijan as the protagonist.

Occasional Prayers for the School Year【電子書籍】[ Grainne Delaney ]

The book is intended for busy teachers, chaplains or anyone who often reaches for a prayer or service, but finds themselves grabbing material from many different sources. The author has worked a Jesuit school for over 20 years, where school gatherings are common and are always prefaced with prayer. She has regularly searched for and written different prayers to suit moments in the school year, to suit a moment in time. Sometimes she had time to prepare and other times, she found herself running along corridors to pull something from her files or turning to the internet while the bell was ringing! She often wished she had a book under her arm that she could trust would always have something to suit. So she put her prayers together as a "go to" for people who lead prayer, who provide calm and stillness for others but may have felt frantic in ‘finding the right piece.’

She has also included a couple of poems from young people as an example of how they continue to inspire her.

Everyday Prayers for the School Year A 30-Day Devotional & Reflective Journal for Moms【電子書籍】[ Tara L. Cole ]

Moms know all too well that God doesn’t promise an easy road for usーor our kids. As much as we’d love to protect them from heartaches, it just isn’t possible. This is especially true during the school year, when they are introduced to new teachers, new classmates, new concepts, and maybe even a new school that seems big and frightening.

Jesus tells us, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). With this reassurance, we try to reassure our children that no matter what, God is there and He’s on their side.

And we pray.

In Everyday Prayers for the School Year, author Tara L. Cole offers devotional readings and opportunities for mothers to pray for many issues concerning their children, such as:

Are they making godly friends?

Are their teachers kind and caring?

Can they make wise choices in bad situations?

Will they commit to studying?

Are they being targeted by bullies?

If they are unprepared for a test, will they trust God or cheat?

No matter what our kids are facing during the school year, we can’t go wrong when we pray and teach them to pray too.

Our prayer is that they ultimately trust Him for their salvation, but even after they become Christians, they have the daily choice to trust God when they feel like they are standing alone and the circumstances look impossible.

Tara says, “My hope for this journal is that it will help moms turn their worry about their children’s school year into hope, that they take their concerns to God and walk away confident that He loves our kids more than we do. And He is in control.”
