Back to the Fifties Nostalgia, Hollywood Film, and Popular Music of the Seventies and Eighties【電子書籍】[ Michael D. Dwyer ]

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Hollywood studios and record companies churned out films, albums, music videos and promotional materials that sought to recapture, revise, and re-imagine the 1950s. Breaking from dominant wisdom that casts the trend as wholly defined by Ronald Reagan's politics or the rise of postmodernism, Back to the Fifties reveals how Fifties nostalgia from 1973 to 1988 was utilized by a range of audiences for diverse and often competing agendas. Films from American Graffiti to Hairspray and popular music from Sha Na Na to Michael Jackson shaped - and were shaped by - the complex social, political and cultural conditions of the Reagan Era. By closely examining the ways that "the Fifties" was remade and recalled, Back to the Fifties explores how cultural memories were fostered for a generation of teenagers trained by popular culture to rewind, record, recycle and replay.

Budgie Wore My Jacket A humorous and nostalgic rite of passage in seventies suburban London【電子書籍】[ Martin Silverstone ]

Enter the immersive world of 1970s London.

Between the hippies and skinheads and the era of disco and punk there was glam rock. When a generation of young men styled themselves in the image of Budgie (the lovable rogue of the eponymous TV series), Rod Stewart (the lovable rogue rock star), and the glam icons Marc Bolan and David Bowie. Young women also donned the glam and glitter look, as well as dressing at Biba and Mr. Freedom. It was the time when attitudes became outrageous, music more fun, fashions glamorous, and pop stars shocking.

Welcome to the early seventies and the age of glam rock. Here we meet Mark, trying to be cool but not quite pulling it off. He is still a virgin and feeling left far behind by his more successful best mate. He wants to trip on LSD but is terrified of bummers. He fancies Samantha, the Pre-Raphaelite beauty at college, but lacks the confidence to approach her. Set in the north-eastern extremities of suburban London and the west end, Mark and his friends live for concerts, weekend parties and the mid week crazy goings on at their College of Further Education. They make regular journeys up west to the hip boutiques, restaurants and record shops; especially Kensington’s Biba, Mr. Freedom, Take Six and Kenny Market. They take drugs, have sex and march against the Tory government.

Something Happened A Political and Cultural Overview of the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Edward Berkowitz ]

In both the literal and metaphorical senses, it seemed as if 1970s America was running out of gas. The decade not only witnessed long lines at gas stations but a citizenry that had grown weary and disillusioned. High unemployment, runaway inflation, and the energy crisis, caused in part by U.S. dependence on Arab oil, characterized an increasingly bleak economic situation.

As Edward D. Berkowitz demonstrates, the end of the postwar economic boom, Watergate, and defeat in Vietnam led to an unraveling of the national consensus. During the decade, ideas about the United States, how it should be governed, and how its economy should be managed changed dramatically. Berkowitz argues that the postwar faith in sweeping social programs and a global U.S. mission was replaced by a more skeptical attitude about government's ability to positively affect society.

From Woody Allen to Watergate, from the decline of the steel industry to the rise of Bill Gates, and from Saturday Night Fever to the Sunday morning fervor of evangelical preachers, Berkowitz captures the history, tone, and spirit of the seventies. He explores the decade's major political events and movements, including the rise and fall of d?tente, congressional reform, changes in healthcare policies, and the hostage crisis in Iran. The seventies also gave birth to several social movements and the "rights revolution," in which women, gays and lesbians, and people with disabilities all successfully fought for greater legal and social recognition. At the same time, reaction to these social movements as well as the issue of abortion introduced a new facet into American political life-the rise of powerful, politically conservative religious organizations and activists.

Berkowitz also considers important shifts in American popular culture, recounting the creative renaissance in American film as well as the birth of the Hollywood blockbuster. He discusses how television programs such as All in the Family and Charlie's Angels offered Americans both a reflection of and an escape from the problems gripping the country.

Yes to Europe! The 1975 Referendum and Seventies Britain【電子書籍】[ Robert Saunders ]

On 5 June 1975, voters went to the polls in Britain's first national referendum to decide whether the UK should remain in the European Community. As in 2016, the campaign shattered old political allegiances and triggered a far-reaching debate on Britain's place in the world. The campaign to stay in stretched from the Conservative Party - under its new leader, Margaret Thatcher - to the Labour government, the farming unions and the Confederation of British Industry. Those fighting to 'Get Britain Out' ranged from Enoch Powell and Tony Benn to Scottish and Welsh nationalists. Footballers, actors and celebrities joined the campaign trail, as did clergymen, students, women's groups and paramilitaries. In a panoramic survey of 1970s Britain, this volume offers the first modern history of the referendum, asking why voters said 'Yes to Europe' and why the result did not, as some hoped, bring the European debate in Britain to a close.

Shock and Awe Glam Rock and Its Legacy, from the Seventies to the Twenty-first Century【電子書籍】[ Simon Reynolds ]

"Tawdry, ridiculous, pretentious, and crass, glam produced some of the most sublime pop music of its era. Now it has a history worthy of it." ー Los Angeles Review of Books
NPR Great Read of 2016
Spearheaded by David Bowie, Alice Cooper, T. Rex, and Roxy Music, glam rock reveled in artifice and spectacle. Reacting against the hairy, denim-clad rock bands of the late Sixties, glam was the first true teenage rampage of the new decade. In Shock and Awe, renowned music critic Simon Reynolds takes you on a wild cultural tour through the early Seventies, a period packed with glitzy costumes and alien make-up, thrilling music and larger-than-life personas.
Shock and Awe offers a fresh, in-depth look at the glam and glitter phenomenon, placing it in the wider Seventies context of social upheaval and political disillusion. It explores how artists like Lou Reed, New York Dolls, and Queen broke with the hippie generation, celebrating illusion and artifice over truth and authenticity. Probing the genre's major themesーstardom, androgyny, image, decadence, fandom, apocalypseーReynolds tracks glam's legacy as it unfolded in subsequent decades, from Eighties art-pop icons like Kate Bush through to twenty-first century idols of outrage such as Lady Gaga. Shock and Awe shows how the original glam artists' obsessions with fame, extreme fashion, and theatrical excess continue to reverberate through contemporary pop culture.
"Giddy and wonderful . . . Shock and Awe is hard to rein in because it's about more than glam rock. It's about the magic of the popular (important word: popular) arts at their most inventive and curious, about adventure dressed up and turned up, brazenly changing the world." ー The Guardian

Hollywood's Last Golden Age Politics, Society, and the Seventies Film in America【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Kirshner ]

Kirshner's commentary on these and other films is stimulating...Kirshner's book provides intriguing insights for anyone interested in the relation between film and wider culture.ーThe Journal of American Culture

Between 1967 and 1976 a number of extraordinary factors converged to produce an uncommonly adventurous era in the history of American film. The end of censorship, the decline of the studio system, economic changes in the industry, and demographic shifts among audiences, filmmakers, and critics created an unprecedented opportunity for a new type of Hollywood movie, one that Jonathan Kirshner identifies as the "seventies film." In Hollywood's Last Golden Age, Kirshner shows the ways in which key films from this periodーincluding Chinatown, Five Easy Pieces, The Graduate, and Nashville, as well as underappreciated films such as The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Klute, and Night Movesーwere important works of art in continuous dialogue with the political, social, personal, and philosophical issues of their times.

These "seventies films" reflected the era's social and political upheavals: the civil rights movement, the domestic consequences of the Vietnam war, the sexual revolution, women's liberation, the end of the long postwar economic boom, the Shakespearean saga of the Nixon Administration and Watergate. Hollywood films, in this brief, exceptional moment, embraced a new aesthetic and a new approach to storytelling, creating self-consciously gritty, character-driven explorations of moral and narrative ambiguity. Although the rise of the blockbuster in the second half of the 1970s largely ended Hollywood’s embrace of more challenging films, Kirshner argues that seventies filmmakers showed that it was possible to combine commercial entertainment with serious explorations of politics, society, and characters’ interior lives.

Peacock Revolution American Masculine Identity and Dress in the Sixties and Seventies【電子書籍】[ Mr Daniel Delis Hill ]

The Peacock Revolution in menswear of the 1960s came as a profound shock to much of America. Men's long hair and vividly colored, sexualized clothes challenged long established traditions of masculine identity. Peacock Revolution is an in-depth study of how radical changes in men's clothing reflected, and contributed to, the changing ideas of American manhood initiated by a 'youthquake' of rebellious baby boomers coming of age in an era of social revolutions.

Featuring a detailed examination of the diverse socio-cultural and socio-political movements of the era, the book examines how those dissents and advocacies influenced the youthquake generation's choices in dress and ideas of masculinity. Daniel Delis Hill provides a thorough chronicle of the peacock fashions of the time, beginning with the mod looks of the British Invasion in the early 1960s, through the counterculture street styles and the mass-market trends they inspired, and concluding with the dress-for-success menswear revivals of the 1970s Me-Decade.

Aspen Odyssey: A Long Strange Trip... A memoir of life in Aspen in the seventies and eighties and how a quaint little utopia, a sanctuary for like-minded kids seeking refuge from the insanity that plagued the nation in the late sixties, 【電子書籍】

Seeking to escape the insanity that plagued the nation in the late sixties, Spencer F. Schiffer and his young wife fled New York as soon as he graduated law school in 1971 to spend a winter ski-bumming in Aspen while trying to figure out what to do with their lives. By what he describes as simple twists of fate, he ended up practicing law in Aspen with clients ranging from drug smugglers to Donald Trump. Among them was Aspen’s largest landowner in 1981, Hans Cantrup. When Cantrup was forced into bankruptcy in 1983, it set off an unlikely chain of events that were the catalyst for dramatic changes, not only to Aspen’s complexion, but to its very core, its heart and soul.

Cantrup’s properties were purchased out of bankruptcy by the owner of a Texas savings and loan using the bank’s funds, lost the properties in foreclosure, and ended up in prison. Enter Donald Trump, who made a deal with the foreclosing bank to purchase a prime parcel at the base of Aspen Mountain to build a hotel, contingent on the bank getting title at the end of the foreclosure process, but the bank never got title. At the very last hour for redemption of the properties under Colorado law, an unknown developer from D.C., Mohamed Hadid, wired over forty-two-million dollars to the Public Trustee and redeemed all the properties through a lien he purchased from a bank owned by Adnan Khashoggi, the notorious arms dealer of Iran-Contra fame. Adding intrigue, the source of Hadid’s funds was the SAAR Foundation, a charitable organization later investigated for money laundering and funding terrorist organizations, including Al-Qaeda, and was dissolved just prior to 9/11. Ironically, Hadid lost the properties to members of the Saudi royal family, who then became Aspen’s largest landowners.

The story is a page-turner, filled with ironies and fascinating anecdotes about Aspen in the seventies and eighties, including the unsolved car bomb murder of notorious local cocaine smuggler Steven Grabow in 1986.

About the Author:

Spencer F. Schiffer practiced law in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley from 1971 until retiring in 2016. He served as Chairman of the City of Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission from 1973 to 1975 and vice president of the Aspen School Board from 1990 to 1995. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his law degree from St. John’s University. He is the proud father of two daughters and two grandchildren, and now lives in Carbondale, Colorado with his wife and dog. In My Liverpool Home - Growing Up in the Seventies and Eighties【電子書籍】[ Tom Garnett ]

This book is a collection of memories from a proud scouser, conceived, born and raised in the area of Liverpool, in the United Kingdom, in a place called Edge Hill.

If you want to know what life was like back in the Seventies and Eighties, then park your bottom on my 'Steerie' (you'll find the instructions on how to make one in this book), a Go-Kart in case you're wondering, with room for two. So let's take a bumpy and nostalgic trip back in time. You'll proper 'luv' this book!

We'll visit places close to my heart, and listen to music on the way. Us Scousers love music, we're a creative lot and music is in our DNA, but don't worry about a Playlist, I've got that covered. I've inserted many 'fab' songs into the book, I call them 'tracks,' but a word of caution, I've also added a few guilty pleasures and of course, there's many references to the Beatles. My first haircut was at the famous Penny Lane Barbers.

You can take the ropes but do push with your feet when turning a corner, and we can chat about the many imaginative games us Scouse Kids played at home, in the street and beyond. Sometimes miles away from home!

We had the freedom to explore the area, the wasteland, the 'bombies' and for hours at a time and without any adults wondering what we were up to? We didn't have mobiles, we 'yodelled', that's how we communicated across the rooftops to find out where the gang was hanging out. We had meeting up places but we wouldn't go home until the streetlights came on. Bruised legs after jumping onto discarded trampolines, the occasional black eye, battle scars after a brick fight and the odd broken bone. But it was fun!

I hope you enjoy this book my trusted co-pilot but don't you think todays kids are crap at climbing, they don't know how to walk along an entry wall, or throw a ball, in fact most can't juggle a ball with their feet, or knock a conker out a tree, or ride a bike with confidence on its back wheel. Yeah, that last talent was a proper fib, 'balaclava' wearing kids often hurtle past me in the middle of the road, and in my day the 'Plod' would have arrested them! Makes me so mad that!

But I'm an old git now. Kids today can teach us oldies a thing or two when it comes to gadgets, but kids have lost the ability to play out, and to think of games using their imagination. Today's kids rely upon social media, influences, whatever that means, and some developer's 'image' of the world, a realistic world but a virtual world and that's so sad and lazy! Would today's kids know how to make this steerie, they would ask Chatgp for instructions I guess, and expect some AI drone to build it!

Can we talk about my family's struggles, how we survived on jam butties, how we wiped our bottoms with last nights Echo in the outside lav, how we shared the bathwater, how we partied and celebrated things? Too late, its all in the book but you know something, Edge Hill is a 'tough' area for a kid to embark on their life's path, but coming from humble beginnings, when Dad was unemployed, a time full of social, political and cultural changes, it made you stronger. My childhood encouraged drive and determination and it was 'proper' character building.

And before we roll down the hill of my life, one last thing. We never had much but I wouldn't change a single thing. So buckle up, I hope you enjoy the ride, and this book.

The Argentine Silent Majority Middle Classes, Politics, Violence, and Memory in the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Sebasti?n Carassai ]

In The Argentine Silent Majority, Sebasti?n Carassai focuses on middle-class culture and politics in Argentina from the end of the 1960s. By considering the memories and ideologies of middle-class Argentines who did not get involved in political struggles, he expands thinking about the era to the larger society that activists and direct victims of state terror were part of and claimed to represent. Carassai conducted interviews with 200 people, mostly middle-class non-activists, but also journalists, politicians, scholars, and artists who were politically active during the 1970s. To account for local differences, he interviewed people from three sites: Buenos Aires; Tucum?n, a provincial capital rocked by political turbulence; and Correa, a small town which did not experience great upheaval. He showed the middle-class non-activists a documentary featuring images and audio of popular culture and events from the 1970s. In the end Carassai concludes that, during the years of la violencia, members of the middle-class silent majority at times found themselves in agreement with radical sectors as they too opposed military authoritarianism but they never embraced a revolutionary program such as that put forward by the guerrilla groups or the most militant sectors of the labor movement.

Seeing Through the Seventies Essays on Feminism and Art【電子書籍】[ Laura Cottingham ]

In recent years, Laura Cottingham has emerged as one of the most visible feminist critics of the so-called post-feminist generation. Following a social-political approach to art history and criticism that accepts visual culture as part of a larger social reality, Cottingham's writings investigate central tensions currently operative in the production, distribution and evaluation of art, especially those related to cultural production by and about women.
Seeing Through the Seventies: Essays on Feminism and Art gathers together Cottingham's key essays from the 1990's. These include an appraisal of Lucy R. Lippard, the most influential feminist art critic of the1970's; a critique of the masculinist bias implicit to modernism and explicitly recuperated by commercially successful artists during the 1980s; an exhaustive analysis of the curatorial failures operative in the "Bad Girls" museum exhibitions of the early 1990s; surveys of feminist-influenced art practices during the women's liberationist period; speculations on the current possibilities and obstacles that attend efforts to recover lesbian cultural history; and an examination of the life, work and obscuration of the early twentieth-century French photographer Claude Cahun.

Based on a wealth of primary material, ranging from interviews to FBI reports, this book reconstructs the motivation and ideology of violent organizations active during the 1960s and 1970s. Varon conveys the intense passions of the era--the heat of moral purpose, the depth of Utopian longing, the sense of danger and despair, and the exhilaration over temporary triumphs. Varon's compelling interpretation of the logic and limits of dissent in democratic societies provides striking insights into the role of militancy in contemporary protest movements and has wide implications for the United States' current "war on terrorism."

Varon explores Weatherman and RAF's strong similarities and the reasons why radicals in different settings developed a shared set of values, languages, and strategies. Addressing the relationship of historical memory to political action, Varon demonstrates how Germany's fascist past influenced the brutal and escalating nature of the West German conflict in the 60s and 70s, as well as the reasons why left-wing violence dropped sharply in the United States during the 1970s. Bringing the War Home is a fascinating account of why violence develops within social movements, how states can respond to radical dissent and forms of terror, how the rational and irrational can combine in political movements, and finally how moral outrage and militancy can play both constructive and destructive roles in efforts at social change.

Well Beings How the Seventies Lost Its Mind and Taught Us to Find Ourselves【電子書籍】[ James Riley ]

James Riley, author of the cult hit The Bad Trip: Dark Omens, New Worlds and the End of the Sixties, returns with another incisive and thought-provoking cultural history, turning his trenchant eye to the wellness industry that emerged in the 1970s.

Concepts such as wellness and self-care may feel like distinctly twenty-first century ideas, but they first gained traction as part of the New Age health movements that began to flourish in the wake of the 1960s. Riley dives into this strange and hypnotic world of panoramic coastal retreats and darkened floatation tanks, blending a page-turning narrative with illuminating explorations of the era's music, film, art and literature.

Well Beings delves deep into the mind of the seventies - its popular culture, its radical philosophies, its approach to health and its sense of social crisis. It tells the story of what was sought, what was found and how these explorations helped the 'Me Decade' find itself. In so doing, it questions what good health means today and reveals what the seventies can teach us about the strange art of being well.

Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay. Rodney Jetton grew up in the Seventies and Eighties as the son of a Southern Baptist preacher. Being a pastor’s son can be challenging, and his autobiography does a great job of providing us with a candid and sometimes humorous look at what goes on after the Sunday sermon. In this heartwarming narrative, you will get to know the extended Jetton family and share in both the good times and hard times. While this book was written for his children, and is full of touching stories, educational illustrations and commonsense advice it will provide the reader with a unique glimpse into the consequences of good and bad choices. The first few chapters introduce the family members and are filled with childhood memories of Rodney’s years growing up, and then he takes us through his high school and college years. Rodney shares intimate details about his failure to follow his parent’s teachings and God’s commandments, all while showing how God forgave a prodigal son. Rodney’s testimony of God’s amazing grace during the first 20 years of his life will provide comfort and guidance to today’s parents trying to raise teenagers in a Christian home, and teenagers will benefit from these frank and easy to read stories on the temptations they need to overcome in today’s fast paced world.

Red Internationalism Anti-Imperialism and Human Rights in the Global Sixties and Seventies【電子書籍】[ Salar Mohandesi ]

In Red Internationalism, Salar Mohandesi returns to the Vietnam War to offer a new interpretation of the transnational left's most transformative years. In the 1960s, radicals mobilized ideas from the early twentieth century to reinvent a critique of imperialism that promised not only to end the war but also to overthrow the global system that made such wars possible. Focusing on encounters between French, American, and Vietnamese radicals, Mohandesi explores how their struggles did change the world, but in unexpected ways that allowed human rights to increasingly displace anti-imperialism as the dominant idiom of internationalism. When anti-imperialism collapsed in the 1970s, human rights emerged as a hegemonic alternative channeling anti-imperialism's aspirations while rejecting systemic change. Approaching human rights as neither transhistorical truth nor cynical imperialist ruse but instead as a symptom of anti-imperialism's epochal crisis, Red Internationalism dramatizes a shift that continues to affect prospects for emancipatory political change in the future.

By the end of the decade conscription was scrapped, tertiaryeducation was free, access to abortion had improved, the White Australia policywas abolished and a woman read the news on the ABC for the first time.

TheSeventies was the decade that shaped modern Australia. It was the decade of'It's Time', stagflation and the Dismissal, a tumultuous period of economic andpolitical upheaval. But the Seventies was also the era when the personal becamepolitical, when we had a Royal Commission into Human Relationships and when socialmovements tore down the boundary between public and private life. Women wantedchildcare, equal pay, protection from violence and agency to shape their ownlives. In the process, the reforms they sought - and achieved, at least in part - reshaped Australia's culture and rewrote our expectations of government.

Ina lively and engaging style, Michelle Arrow has written a new history of thistransformative decade; one that is more urgent, and more resonant, than ever.

'At last, personal politics as national history. M?xico Beyond 1968 Revolutionaries, Radicals, and Repression During the Global Sixties and Subversive Seventies【

M?xico Beyond 1968 examines the revolutionary organizing and state repression that characterized Mexico during the 1960s and 1970s. The massacre of students in Mexico City in October 1968 is often considered the defining moment of this period. The authors in this volume challenge the centrality of that moment by looking at the broader story of struggle and repression across Mexico during this time. M?xico Beyond 1968 complicates traditional narratives of youth radicalism and places urban and rural rebellions within the political context of the nation’s Dirty Wars during this period.

The book illustrates how expressions of resistance developed from the ground up in different regions of Mexico, including Chihuahua, Guerrero, Jalisco, Mexico City, Puebla, and Nuevo Le?n. Movements in these regions took on a variety of forms, including militant strikes, land invasions, cross-country marches, independent forums, popular organizing, and urban and rural guerrilla uprisings.

M?xico Beyond 1968 brings together leading scholars of Mexican studies today. They share their original research from Mexican archives partially opened after 2000 and now closed again to scholars, and they offer analysis of this rich primary source material, including interviews, political manifestos, newspapers, and human rights reports.

By centering on movements throughout Mexico, M?xico Beyond 1968 underscores the deep-rooted histories of inequality and the frustrations with a regime that monopolized power for decades. It challenges the conception of the Mexican state as “exceptional” and underscores and refocuses the centrality of the 1968 student movement. It brings to light the documents and voices of those who fought repression with revolution and asks us to rethink Mexico’s place in tumultuous times.

Contributors:

Alexander Avi?a
Adela Cedillo
A.
