Trinity Tales: Trinity College Dublin in the Seventies Trinity College Dublin in the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Kathy Gilfillan ]
|

These time-capsule recollections of Trinity College students in the seventies include those of U2 manager Paul McGuinness, director of the Gate Theatre Michael Colgan, novelist James Ryan, writer Robert O'Byrne, judge Fidelma Macken, publisher Antony Farrell, Dillie Keane of Fascinating Aida, Mary Harney, Liz O'Donnell and others, who have in different ways shaped the Ireland of today. The seventies were significant, with Catholic students allowed into the College as British grants enabled a welcome invasion by the Northern Irish; post-Woodstock, a global counterculture was at work. Together, Irish nationals and expats created an interesting fusion of sensibilities, styles and philosophies. As the decade of political and social upheaval unfolded ? from the availability of the Pill to the horrors of Bloody Sunday and the Dublin bombings ? Irish youth came to embrace a changed Ireland. Buoyed by idealism and other substances but tethered by pragmatism, contributors to Trinity Tales mirror a time when everything felt possible.

Painted Flowers Shouldn't Talk Back The Houston Garden Artists in the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Margaret O. Killinger ]
|

Painted Flowers Shouldn’t Talk Back tells the story of a suburban women’s art collective that painted together in Houston, Texas, from 1970 to 1977. They called themselves the Garden Artists, though their subjects were much more varied than just garden views. Author Margaret Killinger’s artful narrative illustrates how these women creatively confronted profound sociocultural challenges through decorative art. Some discovered much-needed financial independence and personal freedom through the group; others, camaraderie and gratification outside home and marriage. Still others found a welcome reprieve from the demands of motherhood, the confines of suburban conformity, or the sinking weight of grief. They collectively learned to confront stark walls and to determine what they could and could not live with, all the while enjoying art and each other.

Framed by Killinger’s 2008 group interview conducted in Houston, the story moves via memories and other interviews to El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, Santa Fe, and New Orleans. The women’s story is furthermore told under the shadow of Killinger’s own search for answers. She began exploring the women’s lives after the sudden, quiet death of her mother, a portrait artist and peripheral member of the group who collapsed and died in 2004, when she was just sixty-five years old. Nancy Alvarezーthe eccentric, hilarious leader of the Garden Artists who shaped each of their storiesーdied one year later, also sixty-five. To make sense of these losses, Killinger looks back to when the women were prolific Houston artists with Nancy as their quirky guide, a time when they were arguably most alive. Resolution comes through deciphering what their art meant to them back then and exploring what it could mean for readers today.

Budgie Wore My Jacket A humorous and nostalgic rite of passage in seventies suburban London【電子書籍】[ Martin Silverstone ]
|

Enter the immersive world of 1970s London.

Between the hippies and skinheads and the era of disco and punk there was glam rock. When a generation of young men styled themselves in the image of Budgie (the lovable rogue of the eponymous TV series), Rod Stewart (the lovable rogue rock star), and the glam icons Marc Bolan and David Bowie. Young women also donned the glam and glitter look, as well as dressing at Biba and Mr. Freedom. It was the time when attitudes became outrageous, music more fun, fashions glamorous, and pop stars shocking.

Welcome to the early seventies and the age of glam rock. Here we meet Mark, trying to be cool but not quite pulling it off. He is still a virgin and feeling left far behind by his more successful best mate. He wants to trip on LSD but is terrified of bummers. He fancies Samantha, the Pre-Raphaelite beauty at college, but lacks the confidence to approach her. Set in the north-eastern extremities of suburban London and the west end, Mark and his friends live for concerts, weekend parties and the mid week crazy goings on at their College of Further Education. They make regular journeys up west to the hip boutiques, restaurants and record shops; especially Kensington’s Biba, Mr. Freedom, Take Six and Kenny Market. They take drugs, have sex and march against the Tory government.

Skeem Life Growing Up in the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Gary Robertson ]
|

When young Gary Robertson moved from the old tenements to an almost brand new housing scheme in the early 1970s, it was the start of a very big adventure. In the skeems, you could roam from morning to night and get up to all sorts - provided you obeyed the rules of the street (and your parents if they saw you). As a training ground for life it was second to none but there was plenty to learn. There was money to be made on the lemonade bottles and the berries each summer - provided you knew the tricks of the trade. There were games to be played, from Backie Hopping to Scubby Queen, gangs to be avoided and football, music and lassies to get to grips with - or not - at the Clubbie. Irreverent and funny, Skeem Life is set against a backdrop of the tough housing schemes of 1970s Dundee. It was Britain in the time of the three-day week and the OPEC oil crisis but it was a journey full of excitement, adventure and youthful dreams.

Hollywood's Last Golden Age Politics, Society, and the Seventies Film in America【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Kirshner ]
|

Kirshner's commentary on these and other films is stimulating...Kirshner's book provides intriguing insights for anyone interested in the relation between film and wider culture.ーThe Journal of American Culture

Between 1967 and 1976 a number of extraordinary factors converged to produce an uncommonly adventurous era in the history of American film. The end of censorship, the decline of the studio system, economic changes in the industry, and demographic shifts among audiences, filmmakers, and critics created an unprecedented opportunity for a new type of Hollywood movie, one that Jonathan Kirshner identifies as the "seventies film." In Hollywood's Last Golden Age, Kirshner shows the ways in which key films from this periodーincluding Chinatown, Five Easy Pieces, The Graduate, and Nashville, as well as underappreciated films such as The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Klute, and Night Movesーwere important works of art in continuous dialogue with the political, social, personal, and philosophical issues of their times.

These "seventies films" reflected the era's social and political upheavals: the civil rights movement, the domestic consequences of the Vietnam war, the sexual revolution, women's liberation, the end of the long postwar economic boom, the Shakespearean saga of the Nixon Administration and Watergate. Hollywood films, in this brief, exceptional moment, embraced a new aesthetic and a new approach to storytelling, creating self-consciously gritty, character-driven explorations of moral and narrative ambiguity. Although the rise of the blockbuster in the second half of the 1970s largely ended Hollywood’s embrace of more challenging films, Kirshner argues that seventies filmmakers showed that it was possible to combine commercial entertainment with serious explorations of politics, society, and characters’ interior lives.

Every pound of food was hauled in wagons, for there were only a few points between the Blue Mountains of Oregon and the North Platte, in Wyoming, where a sack of flour or a side of bacon could be bought. Likewise, it was not uncommon to travel two or three weeks without seeing a human being other than your own outfit."

About the author:

In 1876, Charles John Steedman (1856-1907) left Boston for the West, and had Ideas of "careering across the open prairie on a wild mustang, clad in buckskin, with rifle and pistol, spurs and sombrero." His first experience was on a sheep ranch in Wyoming, not far from Laramie City. Being In delicate health with weak digestive powers, at the beginning he had a hard time of it with the poor food. He never rode a mustang or fired a pistol, but he dug post holes and shoveled sand, made hay. and clipped sheep. Work left him exhausted, but soon came health and strength, and then an appetite which could hardly be satisfied. Then there came to the author a desire to become one of the cattle kings; hence he began upon the quest described in the present book.

Aspen Odyssey: A Long Strange Trip... A memoir of life in Aspen in the seventies and eighties and how a quaint little utopia, a sanctuary for like-minded kids seeking refuge from the insanity that plagued the nation in the late sixties, 【電子書籍】
|

Seeking to escape the insanity that plagued the nation in the late sixties, Spencer F. Schiffer and his young wife fled New York as soon as he graduated law school in 1971 to spend a winter ski-bumming in Aspen while trying to figure out what to do with their lives. By what he describes as simple twists of fate, he ended up practicing law in Aspen with clients ranging from drug smugglers to Donald Trump. Among them was Aspen’s largest landowner in 1981, Hans Cantrup. When Cantrup was forced into bankruptcy in 1983, it set off an unlikely chain of events that were the catalyst for dramatic changes, not only to Aspen’s complexion, but to its very core, its heart and soul.

Cantrup’s properties were purchased out of bankruptcy by the owner of a Texas savings and loan using the bank’s funds, lost the properties in foreclosure, and ended up in prison. Enter Donald Trump, who made a deal with the foreclosing bank to purchase a prime parcel at the base of Aspen Mountain to build a hotel, contingent on the bank getting title at the end of the foreclosure process, but the bank never got title. At the very last hour for redemption of the properties under Colorado law, an unknown developer from D.C., Mohamed Hadid, wired over forty-two-million dollars to the Public Trustee and redeemed all the properties through a lien he purchased from a bank owned by Adnan Khashoggi, the notorious arms dealer of Iran-Contra fame. Adding intrigue, the source of Hadid’s funds was the SAAR Foundation, a charitable organization later investigated for money laundering and funding terrorist organizations, including Al-Qaeda, and was dissolved just prior to 9/11. Ironically, Hadid lost the properties to members of the Saudi royal family, who then became Aspen’s largest landowners.

The story is a page-turner, filled with ironies and fascinating anecdotes about Aspen in the seventies and eighties, including the unsolved car bomb murder of notorious local cocaine smuggler Steven Grabow in 1986.

About the Author:

Spencer F. Schiffer practiced law in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley from 1971 until retiring in 2016. He served as Chairman of the City of Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission from 1973 to 1975 and vice president of the Aspen School Board from 1990 to 1995. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his law degree from St. John’s University. He is the proud father of two daughters and two grandchildren, and now lives in Carbondale, Colorado with his wife and dog. On Western Trails in the Early Seventies Pioneer Life in the Canadian Northwest【電子書籍】[ John McDougall ]

|

In the enthralling narrative of "On Western Trails in the Early Seventies," Reverend John McDougall, a revered pioneer and missionary, delves into the heart of frontier pioneer life in the expansive Canadian Northwest. Unveiling his extensive travels and experiences, McDougall's memoir captures the essence of survival on the rugged Canadian land during the early 1870s. His life unfolds against the backdrop of the untamed Canadian Northwest, a vast expanse where survival demanded resilience, skill, and an intimate understanding of the land. As a seasoned buffalo hunter, McDougall's prowess was tested in the face of challenging terrains, encounters with indigenous peoples, and the looming threat of unscrupulous whiskey traders. The memoir not only chronicles McDougall's remarkable journey through territories often fraught with danger but also reflects his dual role as an advocate for indigenous communities and an eager proponent of westward expansion for white settlers. His encounters with the indigenous people highlight the delicate balance between forging friendships and grappling with the encroachment of settlers, presenting a complex and nuanced view of the cultural dynamics at play during this pivotal period.

Barbara Hammer in the Seventies Or, What a Body Can Do【電子書籍】[ Krystyna Mazur ]
|

Barbara Hammer in the Seventies: Or, What a Body Can Do addresses the intersection of experimental film, lesbian sexuality, and the women’s movement in Hammer’s early films. Grounded in an embodied, sexual, and gendered positionality, these films interrogate the politics of visibility and identity and perform a discontinuous repertoire of lesbian images that resist the medium of film’s established constraints and the decade’s broader systems of signification.

Hammer’s films offer a critique of the dominant discourse that privileges the discreteness and self-sufficiency of the individualistic human subject. By performing the (lesbian) body in its ‘environment’ーin erotic and communal relation to other bodiesーand staging the relation of human bodies with the materiality of non-human beings and objects, they create a site of intervention into the humanist project, as it informs film studies, feminism, and queer theory.

This rereading of Hammer’s work offers an important contribution to conversations between feminism and queer studies. In remembering the feminist origins of queer studies, it recenters political and ethical questions such as the fundamental relationality of the subject, the subject’s dependency on others, and the resulting ethical responsibility for and towards the other.

The Fifth Estate Britain's Unions in the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Robert Taylor ]
|

First published in 1978. Britain’s unions were blamed by many people for the country’s post-war economic decline. Portrayed as greedy wreckers who wanted to run the country, they had become scapegoats for the state of the nation. This anatomy of Britain’s diverse and complex trade union movement sets out to question that widespread opinion.

The main argument advanced in the study is that unions in Britain were too weak, not too strong. From the 1940s until the 1970s, Robert Taylor believes, they had failed to achieve the constructive influence over British society that union movements elsewhere in western Europe had managed to gain. Considering the major and medium-sized unions separately, he examines the sudden and rapid growth of unionisation in Britain, the structure of the unions, their effectiveness, the influence they had, their international record, and the nature of trade union democracy.

My Last Eight Thousand Days An American Male in His Seventies【電子書籍】[ Lee Gutkind ]

As founding editor of Creative Nonfiction and architect of the genre, Lee Gutkind played a crucial role in establishing literary, narrative nonfiction in the marketplace and in the academy. A longstanding advocate of New Journalism, he has reported on a wide range of issuesーrobots and artificial intelligence, mental illness, organ transplants, veterinarians and animals, baseball, motorcycle enthusiastsーand explored them all with his unique voice and approach.

In My Last Eight Thousand Days, Gutkind turns his notepad and tape recorder inward, using his skills as an immersion journalist to perform a deep dive on himself. Here, he offers a memoir of his life as a journalist, editor, husband, father, and Pittsburgh native, not only recounting his many triumphs, but also exposing his missteps and challenges. The overarching concern that frames these brave, often confessional stories, is his obsession and fascination with aging: how aging provoked anxieties and unearthed long-rooted tensions, and how he came to accept, even enjoy, his mental and physical decline. Gutkind documents the realities of aging with the characteristically blunt, melancholic wit and authenticity that drive the quiet force of all his work.

"Steedman...drove 1200 head of cattle from Portland...across Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming to Laramie, encountering deserts, mountain, alkali, plain and Indians." -Des Moines Register, Jan. 15, 1905
"Steedman has told a fascinating story...ways of cowboys, of trails, of horses, of cattle, and of Indians...exceptional vividness...absorbing." -The Critic, 1905
"Steedman...presents the practical side of a cowpuncher...tells how he spent 120 days on horseback and the distance covered was 3000 miles." -NY Times, Dec. 31, 1904

Who in their right mind would attempt to drive 1200 head of cattle over 1000 miles from Portland, Oregon, to Laramie, Wyoming, traversing deserts, mountains, rivers, and wilderness, as well as facing off with hostile tribes on the warpath, angry settlers, and highwaymen?

Montana cowboy and rancher Charles John Steedman (1856-1907) who attempted this feat in 1878 answers this question in his 1904 book "Bucking the Sagebrush; or, The Oregon Trail in the Seventies."

In introducing this book Steedman writes:

"The following account of my experiences during my first trip over the Oregon trail, taken from a diary that I kept at the time and letters which I wrote home, I have written for a dear little friend, my son ....
"Herds of cattle numbering many thousand heads could be driven a thousand miles, practically in a straight line, without meeting an obstacle in the shape of a fence to bar their way, and they subsisted for months on prairie grass alone.

? The Scotsman Paul McCartney is in de jaren zeventig letterlijk a man on the run. ? Peacock Revolution American Masculine Identity and Dress in the Sixties and Seventies【電子書籍】[ Mr Daniel Delis Hill ]

|

The Peacock Revolution in menswear of the 1960s came as a profound shock to much of America. Men's long hair and vividly colored, sexualized clothes challenged long established traditions of masculine identity. Peacock Revolution is an in-depth study of how radical changes in men's clothing reflected, and contributed to, the changing ideas of American manhood initiated by a 'youthquake' of rebellious baby boomers coming of age in an era of social revolutions.

Featuring a detailed examination of the diverse socio-cultural and socio-political movements of the era, the book examines how those dissents and advocacies influenced the youthquake generation's choices in dress and ideas of masculinity. Daniel Delis Hill provides a thorough chronicle of the peacock fashions of the time, beginning with the mod looks of the British Invasion in the early 1960s, through the counterculture street styles and the mass-market trends they inspired, and concluding with the dress-for-success menswear revivals of the 1970s Me-Decade.

The Argentine Silent Majority Middle Classes, Politics, Violence, and Memory in the Seventies【電子書籍】[ Sebasti?n Carassai ]

|

In The Argentine Silent Majority, Sebasti?n Carassai focuses on middle-class culture and politics in Argentina from the end of the 1960s. By considering the memories and ideologies of middle-class Argentines who did not get involved in political struggles, he expands thinking about the era to the larger society that activists and direct victims of state terror were part of and claimed to represent. Carassai conducted interviews with 200 people, mostly middle-class non-activists, but also journalists, politicians, scholars, and artists who were politically active during the 1970s. To account for local differences, he interviewed people from three sites: Buenos Aires; Tucum?n, a provincial capital rocked by political turbulence; and Correa, a small town which did not experience great upheaval. He showed the middle-class non-activists a documentary featuring images and audio of popular culture and events from the 1970s. In the end Carassai concludes that, during the years of la violencia, members of the middle-class silent majority at times found themselves in agreement with radical sectors as they too opposed military authoritarianism but they never embraced a revolutionary program such as that put forward by the guerrilla groups or the most militant sectors of the labor movement.

America in the Seventies【

|

Tucked between the activist Sixties and the conservative Eighties lies a largely misunderstood and still under-appreciated decade. Now nine leading scholars of postwar America offer a revealing look at the Seventies and their rightful place in the epic narrative of American history

This is the first major work to relate the economic decline and cultural despair of the Seventies to the creative efforts that would reshape American society. Dogged by economic and political crises at home and foreign policy failures abroad, Americans responded to a growing sense of uncertainty in a variety of ways. Some explored the new freedoms promised by the social change movements of the late Sixties. Some challenged the technological verities that ruled corporate America. Others sought to create autonomous zones in the ruins of decaying cities or on the bleak landscape of anomic suburbia. And, against a backdrop of massive economic dislocation and bicentennial celebrations, many Americans struggled to redefine patriotism and the meaning of the American dream.

Focusing on how Americans made sense of their changing world by analyzing such sources as film, popular music, use of public space, advertising campaigns, and patriot rituals, these essays interweave the themes of economic transformation, identity reconfiguration, and cultural uncertainty. The contributors cover such topics as the public’s increasing mistrust of government, the reshaping of working-class identity, and the tensions between the ideological and economic origins of changing gender roles.

From existential despair in popular culture to the reactions of youth subcultures, these provocative articles plot the lives of Americans struggling to redefine themselves as their nation moved into an uncertain future. Together they recapture the essence and spirit of that eraーfor those who lived it and for curious readers who have come of age since then and struggle to understand their own time.

Dismantlings Words against Machines in the American Long Seventies【電子書籍】[ Matt Tierney ]

"For the master's tools," the poet Audre Lorde wrote, "will never dismantle the master's house."Dismantlings is a study of literary, political, and philosophical critiques of the utopian claims about technology in the Long Seventies, the decade and a half before 1980. Following Alice Hilton's 1963 admonition that the coming years would bring humanity to a crossroadsー"machines for HUMAN BEINGS or human beings for THE MACHINE"ーMatt Tierney explores wide-ranging ideas from science fiction, avant-garde literatures, feminist and anti-racist activism, and indigenous eco-philosophy that may yet challenge machines of war, control, and oppression.

Dismantlings opposes the language of technological idealism with radical thought of the Long Seventies, from Lorde and Hilton to Samuel R. Delany and Ursula K. Le Guin to Huey P. Newton, John Mohawk, and many others. This counter-lexicon retrieves seven terms for the contemporary critique of technology: Luddism, a verbal and material combat against exploitative machines; communion, a kind of togetherness that stands apart from communication networks; cyberculture, a historical conjunction of automation with racist and militarist machines; distortion, a transformative mode of reading and writing; revolutionary suicide, a willful submission to the risk of political engagement; liberation technology, a synthesis of appropriate technology and liberation theology; and thanatopography, a mapping of planetary technological ethics after Auschwitz and Hiroshima. Dismantlings restores revolutionary language of the radical Long Seventies for reuse in the digital present against emergent technologies of exploitation, subjugation, and death.

In My Liverpool Home - Growing Up in the Seventies and Eighties【電子書籍】[ Tom Garnett ]
|

This book is a collection of memories from a proud scouser, conceived, born and raised in the area of Liverpool, in the United Kingdom, in a place called Edge Hill.

If you want to know what life was like back in the Seventies and Eighties, then park your bottom on my 'Steerie' (you'll find the instructions on how to make one in this book), a Go-Kart in case you're wondering, with room for two. So let's take a bumpy and nostalgic trip back in time. You'll proper 'luv' this book!

We'll visit places close to my heart, and listen to music on the way. Us Scousers love music, we're a creative lot and music is in our DNA, but don't worry about a Playlist, I've got that covered. I've inserted many 'fab' songs into the book, I call them 'tracks,' but a word of caution, I've also added a few guilty pleasures and of course, there's many references to the Beatles. My first haircut was at the famous Penny Lane Barbers.

You can take the ropes but do push with your feet when turning a corner, and we can chat about the many imaginative games us Scouse Kids played at home, in the street and beyond. Sometimes miles away from home!

We had the freedom to explore the area, the wasteland, the 'bombies' and for hours at a time and without any adults wondering what we were up to? We didn't have mobiles, we 'yodelled', that's how we communicated across the rooftops to find out where the gang was hanging out. We had meeting up places but we wouldn't go home until the streetlights came on. Bruised legs after jumping onto discarded trampolines, the occasional black eye, battle scars after a brick fight and the odd broken bone. But it was fun!

I hope you enjoy this book my trusted co-pilot but don't you think todays kids are crap at climbing, they don't know how to walk along an entry wall, or throw a ball, in fact most can't juggle a ball with their feet, or knock a conker out a tree, or ride a bike with confidence on its back wheel. Yeah, that last talent was a proper fib, 'balaclava' wearing kids often hurtle past me in the middle of the road, and in my day the 'Plod' would have arrested them! Makes me so mad that!

But I'm an old git now. Kids today can teach us oldies a thing or two when it comes to gadgets, but kids have lost the ability to play out, and to think of games using their imagination. Today's kids rely upon social media, influences, whatever that means, and some developer's 'image' of the world, a realistic world but a virtual world and that's so sad and lazy! Would today's kids know how to make this steerie, they would ask Chatgp for instructions I guess, and expect some AI drone to build it!

Can we talk about my family's struggles, how we survived on jam butties, how we wiped our bottoms with last nights Echo in the outside lav, how we shared the bathwater, how we partied and celebrated things? Too late, its all in the book but you know something, Edge Hill is a 'tough' area for a kid to embark on their life's path, but coming from humble beginnings, when Dad was unemployed, a time full of social, political and cultural changes, it made you stronger. My childhood encouraged drive and determination and it was 'proper' character building.

And before we roll down the hill of my life, one last thing. We never had much but I wouldn't change a single thing. So buckle up, I hope you enjoy the ride, and this book.
