Speculum Amantis Love Poems, from Rare Songbooks and Miscellanies of the Seventeenth Century【電子書籍】[ Various ]

"Speculum Amantis," a collection of medieval allegorical poetry, delves into the multifaceted nature of love through a series of vivid narratives and moral reflections. This text, attributed to various authors, showcases an intricate blend of didacticism and lyrical elegance, reflecting the courtly love tradition prevalent in the 14th century. Utilizing elaborate allegories and rich symbolism, the poems navigate the complexities of human emotion, virtue, and the divine, engaging the reader in a meditative exploration of amorous devotion alongside ethical considerations. The work is set against the backdrop of a society grappling with the dualities of desire and morality, increasingly situated in the context of both spiritual longing and earthly relationships. The authors behind "Speculum Amantis" are emblematic of the collaborative and often anonymous nature of medieval literature, as many poets drew inspiration from contemporaneous philosophical and theological paradigms. This collection serves as an insightful reflection of the cultural milieu of its time, revealing how love was conceptualized not just as a personal experience but also as a societal construct often tethered to moral imperatives and religious undertones. Readers seeking a profound engagement with the themes of love and morality will find "Speculum Amantis" a compelling addition to their literary repertoire. Its eloquent verse and rich allegorical content resonate with timeless reflections on the human condition, making it a salient read for those interested in medieval literature, poetic tradition, or the ever-relevant discourse on love.

Originally published in 1978. These essays are written by distinguished philosophers from many countries and were published as a homage to Spinoza in the year which marked the three-hundredth anniversary of his death.

A special feature of the book is that it includes a recently discovered letter by Spinoza, reproduced for the first time in English and in facsimile, with a commentary. The controversial influence of Spinoza on Freud is discussed, and illustrated by facsimile reproductions of original letters, hitherto unknown to Freudians and Spinozists alike. These letters direct revealing light on some of Freud’s attitudes. Through a Speculum That Shines Vision and Imagination in Medieval Jewish Mysticism【電子書籍】[ Elliot R. Wolfson ]

A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter.

In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

The Infinite Crown A Renaissance Speculum【電子書籍】[ Ian Cristoph ]

Florence, 1506. Within the opulent walls of the Palazzo Pitti, Prince Alessandro Bellini, a brilliant inventor, dreams of a machine powered by the very essence of starsーthe Infinite Crown. This device promises to reshape reality itself, a prospect both exhilarating and terrifying. But Alessandro isn't the first to glimpse this forbidden knowledge. Echoes of a vanished civilization, the Architects, whisper warnings of a power that could illuminate the world or shatter it entirely.

Meanwhile, two secret societies circle Alessandro's groundbreaking work. The Guild of the Golden Compass, patrons of progress, see his invention as a tool to shape a world governed by reason. The ancient Order of the Serpent’s Hand, guardians of forgotten lore, recognize the apocalyptic potential of the Infinite Crown and seek to contain it, even if it means silencing Alessandro forever.

Into this treacherous landscape steps Isabella Morelli, a cartographer haunted by her ancestors’ role in the Architects' cataclysmic demise. Drawn to Alessandro by a shared fascination with forbidden knowledge, Isabella recognizes in him the same brilliant, self-destructive fire that consumed her forefathers. Their connection deepens as they embark on a perilous quest for the missing components of the Infinite Crown, their journey taking them from the shadowed canals of Venice to the volcanic ruins of Pompeii, uncovering not only technological marvels but also the chilling truth of a civilization’s self-immolation.

As Alessandro and Isabella race against time, the Guild and the Order, riddled with internal factions and conflicting agendas, tighten their noose. Betrayal lurks in every corner, forcing them to question not only their enemies but their own fragile alliance. Alessandro, burdened by the weight of his creation's destructive potential, must choose between his ambition and the world’s survival. Isabella, grappling with her family’s legacy, must decide whether to bury the past or risk repeating it.

In the ruins of a forgotten observatory, beneath a sky ablaze with starlight, Alessandro and Isabella finally assemble the Infinite Crown. It hums with untamed power, the fate of the Renaissance hanging in the balance. Will Alessandro unleash an age of unprecedented change, or silence the whispers of the cosmos forever? The choice is his, but the responsibility belongs to us all.

Public Privates Performing Gynecology from Both Ends of the Speculum【電子書籍】[ Terri Kapsalis ]

In Public Privates, a book about looking and being looked at, about speculums, spectacles, and spectators, about display, illumination, and reflection, Terri Kapsalis makes visible the practices and representations of gynecology. The quintessential examination of women, gynecology is not simply the study of women’s bodies, but also serves to define and constitute them. Any critical analysis of gynecology is therefore, as Kapsalis affirms, an investigation of what it means to be female. In this respect she considers the public exposure of female "privates" in the performance of the pelvic exam.
From J. Marion Sims’s surgical experiments on unanesthetized slave women in the mid-nineteenth century, to the use of cadavers and prostitutes to teach medical students gynecological techniques, Kapsalis focuses on the ways in which women and their bodies have been treated by the medical establishment. Removing gynecology from its private cover within clinic walls and medical textbook pages, she decodes the gynecological exam, seizing on its performative dimension. She considers traditional medical practices and the dynamics of "proper" patient performance; non-traditional practices such as cervical self-exam; and incarnations of the pelvic examination outside the bounds of medicine, including its appearance in David Cronenberg’s film Dead Ringers and Annie Sprinkle’s performance piece "Public Cervix Announcement."
Confounding the boundaries that separate medicine, art, and pornography, revealing the potent cultural attitudes and anxieties about women, female bodies, and female sexuality that permeate the practice of gynecology, Public Privates concludes by locating a venue from which challenging, alternative performances may be staged.

Magister Jacobus de Ispania, Author of the Speculum musicae【電子書籍】[ Margaret Bent ]

The Speculum musicae of the early fourteenth century, with nearly half a million words, is by a long way the largest medieval treatise on music, and probably the most learned. Only the final two books are about music as commonly understood: the other five invite further work by students of scholastic philosophy, theology and mathematics. For nearly a century, its author has been known as Jacques de Li?ge or Jacobus Leodiensis. ’Jacobus’ is certain, fixed by an acrostic declared within the text; Li?ge is hypothetical, based on evidence shown here to be less than secure. The one complete manuscript, Paris BnF lat. 7207, thought by its editor to be Florentine, can now be shown on the basis of its miniatures by Cristoforo Cortese to be from the Veneto, datable c. 1434-40. New documentary evidence in an Italian inventory, also from the Veneto, describes a lost copy of the treatise dating from before 1419, older than the surviving manuscript, and identifies its author as ’Magister Jacobus de Ispania’. If this had been known eighty years ago, the Li?ge hypothesis would never have taken root. It invites a new look at the geography and influences that played into this central document of medieval music theory. The two new attributes of ’Magister’ and ’de Ispania’ (i.e. a foreigner) prompted an extensive search in published indexes for possible identities. Surprisingly few candidates of this name emerged, and only one in the right date range. It is here suggested that the author of the Speculum is either someone who left no paper trail or James of Spain, a nephew of Eleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I, whose career is documented mostly in England. He was an illegitimate son of Eleanor’s older half-brother, the Infante Enrique of Castile. Documentary evidence shows that he was a wealthy and well-travelled royal prince who was also an Oxford magister. The book traces his career and the likelihood of his authorship of the Speculum musicae.

Speculum Lapidum A Renaissance Treatise on the Healing Properties of Gemstones【電子書籍】[ Camillo Leonardi ]

In early modern Europe precious and semiprecious stones were valued not only for their beauty and rarity but also for their medical and magical properties. Lorenzo de’ Medici, Philip II of Spain, and Popes Leo X and Clement VII were all treated with expensive potions incorporating ground gems such as rubies, diamonds, and emeralds. Medical and magical/astrological lapidaries, texts describing the stones’ occult and medical qualities as well as their abilities to ward off demons and incantations, were essential resources for their use. First published in Venice in 1502, Camillo Leonardi’s Speculum Lapidum is an encyclopedic summary of all classical and medieval sources of lithotherapy.

In describing the natural, manifest, and occult properties of precious and semiprecious stones as well as their graven images and applications, the Speculum Lapidum provides tremendous insight into the role that medical astrology and astral magic played in the life of an Italian court in the early modern period. Liliana Leopardi’s English translation, complete with critical apparatuses, gives unprecedented access to this key text within the magical lapidary genre.

A vital addition to the existing canon of lapidaria in translation, Leopardi’s work will be of special importance for students and scholars of the history of magic, medicine, religion, and Renaissance humanism, and it will fascinate anyone interested in the occult properties of precious and semiprecious stones.

This book offers the first dedicated and comprehensive examination of the lives of nearly thirty women known to occupy the office of queen in the English kingdoms between 650 and 850.

The queens of early England are often shadowy figures in the historical record, beset by numerous issues which have largely confined them to the margins of history. Through careful analysis, the volume presents a ground-breaking appraisal of the role of queens in early England, and how their actions and identities shaped their practice of queenship. Organised thematically, it offers an overview of queens in many different roles, such as agents of Christianity, mothers, and peace-weavers. From high profile queens such as ?thelthryth of Ely and Cynethryth of Mercia, to the shadowy Leofrun of East Anglia and the nameless queen of Anna of East Anglia, the book engages with sources to advance fuller narratives about even the most obscure queens of the era.

Aided by resources such as genealogical tables, Early English Queens, 650?850 is an ideal resource for students and scholars at all levels, as well general readers, interested in the lives of queens and early English history.

Cur ultra speculum videtur imago?

The place of the thirteenth century in the history of human achievement is a subject upon which scholars have not yet come to a general agreement. There can be no doubt that it was, on the whole, an age of progress in many fields; but there is much in its history that points to stagnation, if not to actual decline. From a superficial study of its annals one might be led to class it with the lesser centuries; most writers are inclined to rank it lower than the fourteenth century, and perhaps not even so high as the twelfth. It was in this period that the crusading movement finally flickered out and the Christian world was compelled to leave the cradle of the holy faith in the hands of the infidel. In the thirteenth century, too, the medieval empire sank into hopeless inefficiency and all but expired. The papacy, which more than any other power was responsible for the ruin of the imperial ambitions, also went into decline. Whether the loss in authority and prestige on the part of the holy see was compensated by a renewed spiritual energy in the church at large may well be doubted: what evidence we have would indicate that the religion of the masses was gross and materialistic, that ethical standards were low, and that the improvement in clerical morals, which the church had hoped would follow the enforcement of celibacy, had failed to appear. Yet the thirteenth century also had its attractive figures and its important movements. The old social order was indeed crumbling, but in its place appeared two new forces which were to inherit the power and opportunities of feudalism and reshape social life: these were the new monarchy, enjoying wide sovereign powers, and the new national consciousness, which was able to think in larger units. In England the century saw the development of a new representative institution, which has become the mother of modern legislative assemblies. The Italian cities were growing rich from the profits of Oriental trade; in the Flemish towns the weaver’s industry was building up new forms of municipal life; the great German Hansa was laying hold on the commerce of the northern seas. In the realms of higher intellect, in science, philosophy, and theology, the age was a notable one, with Roger Bacon, Albertus Magnus, and Thomas Aquinas as the leaders, each in his field. The century also meant much for the progress of geographical knowledge, for it was in this period that Marco Polo penetrated the mysterious lands of the Far East. As the historian looks back into this age, he is, therefore, able to find broad traces of much that is regarded as fundamental to modern life. Of first importance in this regard is the employment of popular idioms in literary productions. French literature saw its beginnings in the eleventh century with the chansons de geste, songs of valorous deeds from the heroic age of the Frankish kingdom. In the next century the poets began to use the themes of the Arthurian legends and sang the exploits of the famous British king and the knights of his Round Table. A little later came another cycle of poems based on the heroic tales of classical antiquity. The twelfth century witnessed a parallel movement in Germany, which at first was largely an imitation of contemporary French poetry. The poets, however, soon discovered literary treasures in the dim world of the Teutonic past, in the tales of the Nibelungs, in the heroic deeds of Theodoric, and in the exploits of other heroes.

Looking through the Speculum Examining the Women’s Health Movement【電子書籍】[ Judith A. Houck ]

Highlights local history to tell a national story about the evolution of the women’s health movement, illuminating the struggles and successes of bringing feminist dreams into clinical spaces.

The women’s health movement in the United States, beginning in 1969 and taking hold in the 1970s, was a broad-based movement seeking to increase women’s bodily knowledge, reproductive control, and well-being. It was a political movement that insisted that bodily autonomy provided the key to women’s liberation. It was also an institution-building movement that sought to transform women’s relationships with medicine; it was dedicated to increasing women’s access to affordable health care without the barriers of homophobia, racism, and sexism. But the movement did not only focus on women’s bodies. It also encouraged activists to reimagine their relationships with one another, to develop their relationships in the name of personal and political change, and, eventually, to discover and confront the limitations of the bonds of womanhood.

This book examines historically the emergence, development, travails, and triumphs of the women’s health movement in the United States. By bringing medical history and the history of women’s bodies into our emerging understandings of second-wave feminism, the author sheds light on the understudied efforts to shape health care and reproductive control beyond the hospital and the doctor’s officeーin the home, the women’s center, the church basement, the bookshop, and the clinic. Lesbians, straight women, and women of color all play crucial roles in this history. At its center are the politics, institutions, and relationships created by and within the women’s health movement, depicted primarily from the perspective of the activists who shaped its priorities, fought its battles, and grappled with its shortcomings.
