Travels in Syria and the Holy Land【電子書籍】[ John Lewis Burckhardt ]

In "Travels in Syria and the Holy Land," John Lewis Burckhardt offers an illuminating account of his explorations through the Middle East during the early 19th century. This work not only captures the vivid landscapes and rich cultures he encountered, but also integrates meticulous observations on the historical and archaeological significance of various sites. Burckhardt employs a narrative style that blends adventure with scholarly insight, creating a compelling tapestry that reflects both the beauty and complexity of the region during a time of burgeoning Western interest in Eastern antiquities. John Lewis Burckhardt, a Swiss explorer and oriental scholar, was deeply influenced by his passion for geography, cultures, and the intersections of history and religion. His extensive academic background in linguistics and his travels in North Africa equipped him with the necessary skills to navigate and interpret the intricacies of the Arab world. His experiences resonate throughout the pages of this book, as Burckhardt both critiques and admires the societies he encounters, highlighting the delicate balance between admiration and colonial perspective. For readers intrigued by the cultural tapestry of the Middle East, "Travels in Syria and the Holy Land" serves as an essential exploration. Burckhardt's captivating prose transports readers to a bygone era, enriching their understanding of the region's multifaceted identity. This remarkable work caters to both historians and adventurous spirits alike, prompting reflection on the enduring legacies of these sacred landscapes.

In Search of Greater Syria The History and Politics of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party【電子書籍】[ Christopher Solomon ]

The Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) is one of the most enigmatic and active political forces in the Middle East. For observers in the West, the SSNP is regarded as a far-right organization, subservient to the Baathist government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which dictates its activities from Damascus. However, the SSNP's complicated history and its ideology of Pan-Syrianism has meant the party has been overlooked and forgotten by the daily output of news, analysis, studies and policy recommendations. Very little academic scholarship has been dedicated to understanding its origins, identity, and influence.

Addressing the need for scholarship on the SSNP, this book is a political history from the party's foundation in 1932 to today. A comprehensive and objective study on the little known nationalist group, the author uses interviews from current members to gain insights into its everyday activities, goals, social interstices and nuances. Given the SSNP's history of violence, their own persecution, influence on other secular parties in the region, and their impact in Syria and Lebanon's politics, the book's analysis sheds light on the party's status in Lebanon and its potential role in a future post-war Syria. The SSNP is gaining popularity among regime supporters in Syria and will be one part of understanding the political developments on the ground. This book is essential reading for those wanting to understand the SSNP, its motives, and prospects.

Fragile Nation, Shattered Land The Modern History of Syria【電子書籍】[ James A. Reilly ]

The Syrian state is less than 100 years old, born from the wreckage of World War I. Today it stands in ruins, shattered by brutal civil war. How did this happen? How did the lands that are today Syria survive incorporation with the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century and the trials and vicissitudes of the Sultan's rule for four centuries, only to collapse into civil war in recent years? Arguably it was the Ottoman period that laid the fragile foundations of a state that had to endure a turbulent twentieth century under French rule, tentative independence, a brutal and corrupt dictatorship and eventual disintegration in the twenty-first. Across a diverse cast of individuals, rich and poor, James Reilly explores these fractious and formative periods of Ottoman, Egyptian and French rule, and the ways that these contributed to the contradictions and failings of the rule of the Assad family; and to a civil war which produced the so-called Islamic State.
In charting Syria's history over the last five centuries in their entirety for the first time, Reilly demonstrates the myriad historical, cultural, social, economic and political factors that bind Syrians together, as well as those that have torn them apart. Based on primary sources, recent historiography in English, French and Arabic and more than 30 years' experience living and working in the region, this is the essential book for understanding modern Syria and the Middle East.

Life in the Shadow: An Examination of the Minor Foreign Relations of the DPRK - North Korea Modern Pariah State, Iran, Cuba, Europe, Syria, Africa, India, Strategic Direction, Allies and Partners【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This excellent report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. At some point, every child is warned to remain mindful of the company kept. The idea behind this age-old admonishment is that people, in the absence of other information, often judge others by those with whom they are associated. Of course, individuals have a range of company they keep. If this range is viewed in a linear manner, it likely spans from bitter enemy to close friend. Where a given relationship falls on this linear scale may indicate a number of things to outsiders. Contained within this admonishment, like most venerable nuggets of wisdom, some element of truth likely exists. If this old adage is accepted, then perhaps it has utility in providing additional information about a state. This type of inquiry may have particular value and is the type of analysis that must be employed when examining an opaque state like the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). With a state as closed and as secretive as the DPRK every bit of information that can be gathered is useful to the international community's understanding of this outlier state.
Using this idea as a launching point, this thesis explores the diplomatic relations of the DPRK with an emphasis on the minor diplomatic relations of the state. Minor, for purposes of this thesis, does not speak to durability of the bond between two states. Instead, it simply means those countries with which the DPRK has relations that are not part of what is referred to as the Big Four Plus One (i.e., China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and the United States). This thesis's core research questions are the following. What common characteristics may be identified in diplomatic relations of the DPRK, with a particular emphasis on its minor relations, and what insights can they offer into the internal and external workings of the state? Based on these insights what can be surmised regarding the strategic direction of the DPRK? Does current DPRK diplomatic outreach predict a more belligerent, defiant North Korea? Or, perhaps, a state becoming a more enmeshed-responsible player in the international system? Are emerging or new allies and partners appearing while other stalwarts of the DPRK state begin to wane?

INTRODUCTION * A. MAJOR RESEARCH QUESTION * B. IMPORTANCE * C. The Rule of Violence Subjectivity, Memory and Government in Syria【電子書籍】[ Salwa Ismail ]

Over much of its rule, the regime of Hafez al-Asad and his successor Bashar al-Asad deployed violence on a massive scale to maintain its grip on political power. In this book, Salwa Ismail examines the rationalities and mechanisms of governing through violence. In a detailed and compelling account, Ismail shows how the political prison and the massacre, in particular, developed as apparatuses of government, shaping Syrians' political subjectivities, defining their understanding of the terms of rule and structuring their relations and interactions with the regime and with one another. Examining ordinary citizens' everyday life experiences and memories of violence across diverse sites, from the internment camp and the massacre to the family and school, The Rule of Violence demonstrates how practices of violence, both in their routine and spectacular forms, fashioned Syrians' affective life, inciting in them feelings of humiliation and abjection, and infusing their lived environment with dread and horror. This form of rule is revealed to be constraining of citizens' political engagement, while also demanding of their action.

Syria and the Neutrality Trap The Dilemmas of Delivering Humanitarian Aid through Violent Regimes【電子書籍】[ Carsten Wieland ]

The Syrian war has been an example of the abuse and insufficient delivery of humanitarian assistance. According to international practice, humanitarian aid should be channelled through a state government that bears a particular responsibility for its population. Yet in Syria, the bulk of relief went through Damascus while the regime caused the vast majority of civilian deaths. Should the UN have severed its cooperation with the government and neglected its humanitarian duty to help all people in need? Decision-makers face these tough policy dilemmas, and often the “neutrality trap” snaps shut.

This book discusses the political and moral considerations of how to respond to a brutal and complex crisis while adhering to international law and practice. The author, a scholar and senior diplomat involved in the UN peace talks in Geneva, draws from first-hand diplomatic, practitioner and UN sources. He sheds light on the UN's credibility crisis and the wider implications for the development of international humanitarian and human rights law. This includes covering the key questions asked by Western diplomats, NGOs and international organizations, such as: Why did the UN not confront the Syrian government more boldly? Was it not only legally correct but also morally justifiable to deliver humanitarian aid to regime areas where rockets were launched and warplanes started? Why was it so difficult to render cross-border aid possible where it was badly needed? The meticulous account of current international practice is both insightful and disturbing. It tackles the painful lessons learnt and provides recommendations for future challenges where politics fails and humanitarians fill the moral void.

For the past nearly three years (2013-2015) the author, Dr. Franklin Lamb, has traveled Syria wherever and whenever security conditions allowed, in order to research, photograph and document endangered archaeological sites and to expose the illegal excavations, looting, international trade and iconoclasm which has caused so much destruction to our shared global cultural heritage.
The oldest remains found in Syria date from the Paleolithic era (c.800,000 BC). Artifacts and archaeological sites currently in danger date from 5500 BC in Tel Halaf in the north of Syria and include Babylonian - Sumerian - Egyptian- Assyrian - Phoenician - Aramaic - Greeks - Romans - Byzantines - Umayyad’s ? Ayyubid and later in the 13th century the Ottoman Empire. All of these sources of our globally shared cultural heritage are in danger of being ravaged and in many cases have already been destroyed.
Lamb has specifically chronicled destruction to religious icons, images, monuments, and myriad ancient structures that span pre-Roman civilizations, Islamic structures such as mosques, churches and synagogues all of which continue to be threatened for destruction for religious or political motives.
Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this unique book examines the current situation in the Near East and South Asia, and outlines the worrisome trajectory of aggregate dangers that serve as a forewarning.

Executive Summary * Introduction * Part I: The Near East * Syria: Far More than a Civil War * The Return of Sectarian Violence in Iraq * Iran's Strategic Fears * Jordanian Vulnerabilities * Whither Egypt? * Elsewhere in North Africa, Violence May Become a New Normal * Palestinian Leadership and Unity Challenges * Israeli Challenges * Apprehensive Monarchies * Multiple Challenges in Yemen * Part II: South Asia * Gathering Dangers in Afghanistan, Potential Consequences for Pakistan * Continuing Indo-Pak Tensions * India * South Asian Storm Clouds * Part III: Mitigating the Nightmare Years * Beware of Fiction Masquerading as Wisdom * Historic Interplay of the Policy Wish and Intelligence Failure: Distortion, Distraction, and Disregard * Inattention to Unintended Consequences * Beyond Cautionary Tales: Prescriptions for the Policy High Table and Bureaucratic Trench * Part IV: In the Trenches * Part V: A Final Comment

Throughout the Greater Middle East, it is difficult to underestimate the potential role of a state, nonstate, or individual evil genius employing cyber war/terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, and/or precision weapons targeting sensitive infrastructure. Drone warfare will become more sophisticated, deadly, and available. Information on developing weapons of mass destruction will be increasingly accessible. In the coming decade or two, it is prudent to judge that at least four Greater Middle East statesーPakistan, India, Israel, and Iranーare likely to have nuclear weapon capability and/or other weapons of mass destruction, precision weapons, drones, and cyber war know-how, including the possibility of threatening the U.S. power grid.

In this context, it may be important to take notice of incremental overt and/ or possible covert technological advances. Incremental concerns may include such military-related advances as Iran's November 2013 unveiling of its surveillance and combat drone, Fotros, with a range that covers much of the Middle East, including Israel. More ominously, the same technological advancement that will permit Amazon's drone delivery of online purchases could also turn a weaponized, miniature drone into a weapon of choice for a 21st-century jackal. Finally, the concerns of the Defense Science Board, a U.S. Department of Defense advisory panel, include the need to track small inventories of nuclear material, covert facilities, the use of non-traditional technologies and new nuclear players, according to the Wall Street Journal. In the Journal article, the Defense Science Board is reported as judging that "For the first time since the early decades of the nuclear era" the United States needs to be just as concerned about new nuclear nations and transnational groups as it is about existing nuclear weapon countries. To this end, the Defense Science Board advocates "analyzing vast amounts of data to unearth anomalous events that could signal threats such as a covert nuclear operation."

Syria Divided Patterns of Violence in a Complex Civil War【電子書籍】[ Ora Szekely ]

The civil war in Syriaーwhich has claimed more than 600,000 lives and displaced over half of the country’s population since 2011ーis an enormously complex conflict. The combatants include a wide array of state and nonstate forces, both Syrian and international. Adding to the war’s complexity, its many participants understand and explain the war in a range of different ways. For some, it is a fight for dignity and democracy; for others, a sectarian or communal conflict; still others see it as a fight against terrorism or a consequence of foreign interference.

Ora Szekely draws on sources including in-depth interviews, conflict data, and propaganda distributed through social media to examine how these competing narratives have shaped the course of the conflict. Mapping out the broad patterns of violence among combatants and against civilians, Szekely argues that the competition to control the narrative in the eyes of important audiences at home and abroad has not only influenced the choices of participants, it has alsoーshaped in part by the use of social mediaーled many to treat warfare as a kind of performance.

An insightful analysis of the forces fueling a brutal civil war, Syria Divided offers new perspectives on the performative aspects of violence, the weaponization of social media, and key features of twenty-first-century warfare.

Syria 2011-2013 Revolution and Tyranny before the Mayhem【電子書籍】[ Azmi Bishara ]

Azmi Bishara's book on the Syrian Revolution is one of the most comprehensive and profound works on the subject published to date. Translated here into English for the first time, the study examines the complex roots of Syria's political and sectarian conflicts from the day revolution erupted on 15th March 2011 to its descent into civil war in the two years that followed. The book unearths and discusses the very first signs of protests from across Daraa, Hama, Aleppo, Damascus, Raqqa, Deir El Zour, Edlib and Homs, and it deals with Syria's ruralization process and the subsequent economic 'liberalization', which eventually led to the revolt against the Baath party. The work is based on high-level interviews, analysis of the country's socio-economic background, and examination of the Syrian regime's strategy and its political and media discourse.

Syria's revolution is chronicled in two stages: the peaceful civil stage and the armed stage. Bishara's analysis first centres on the regime's strategy, unveiling despotism, massacres, kidnapping, sectarian tendencies, jihadist violence, the emergence of warlords, and the chaotic spread of arms. He then turns to the role of the opposition to narrate in detail the events that broke out and exactly how a peaceful protest turned into an armed struggle. The book provides a roadmap to how revolution broke out and is a comprehensive analysis of what drove those early events. Its publication brings renowned Arabic-language scholarship to the English-speaking world.

Fifty Three Years in Syria - Volume I【電子書籍】[ Henry Harris Jessup ]

The author of this volume Is one of the pioneers of the new historic era and the changing social order in the Nearer East. He is entitled to this distinction not because of direct political activity, or of any strenuous role as a social reformer, but because of those fifty-three years of missionary service in the interests of religious uplift,, educational progress, social morality, and all those civilizing influences which now by general consent are recognized results of the missionary enterprise. It is a chronicle of eventful years in the history of Western Asia. It is necessarily largely personal, as the book is a combination of autobiographical reminiscence with a somewhat detailed record of mission progress in Syria. No one can fail to be impressed with the variety and continuity, as well as the large beneficence of a life service such as is herein reviewed. In versatile and responsible toil, infidelity to his high commission, in diligence in the use of opportunity, in unwavering loyalty to the call of missionary duty, his career has been worthy of the admiration and affectionate regard of the Church. The writer of this introduction regards it as one of the privileges of his missionary service in Syria that for twenty-two of the fifty-three years which the record covers he was a colleague of the author, and that such a delightful intimacy has marked a lifelong friendship. Dr. Jessup has been a living witness of one of the most vivid and dramatic national transformations which the worlds annals record, as well as himself a contributor, indirectly and unconsciously perhaps, yet no less truly and forcefully, to changes as romantic, weird, and startling as the stage of history presents. We seem to be in the enchanted atmosphere of politics after the order of the Arabian Nights. In fact, no tale of the Thousand and One Nights can surpass in imaginative power, mystical import, and amazing significance this story of the transportation of an entire empire, as if upon some magic carpet of breathless flight, from the domain of irresponsible tyranny to the realm of constitutional government. The cruel and shocking episode of massacre in transit seems to be in keeping with the ruthless barbarity of the despotic environment. The author has presented his readers with a chapter of church history, which resembles a modern version of the annals of the great Reformation, and at the same time has a significant bearing upon the contemporary status of Christianity where it impinges upon Islam.

Soon Roman armies were crossing into Asia for the first time, facing the most powerful Hellenistic state to be created by the successors of Alexander.
Though Rome defeated the Seleucids at the epic battle of Magnesia in 190 BC, other states came to the fore as challengers. In the 1st century BC, Rome's grip on its Asian provinces was shattered by the onslaught of Mithridates VI of Pontus, Rome's most enduring foe. After many reversals, Mithridates was eventually overcome. But these wars in turn led to conflict with Armenia.
In this edition of the Roman Conquests series, Richard Evans gives a clear narrative of the course of these wars, explaining how the Roman military evolved in the face of new enemies and unfamiliar terrain. This volume draws on Dr. Evans' expertise in the relationship between topography and ancient events and specifically his original research into the battlefield of Magnesia.

Crowds and Sultans Urban Protest in Late Medieval Egypt and Syria【電子書籍】[ Amina Elbendary ]

During the fifteenth century, the Mamluk sultanate that had ruled Egypt and Syria since 1249-50 faced a series of sustained economic and political challenges to its rule, from the effects of recurrent plagues to changes in international trade routes. Both these challenges and the policies and behaviors of rulers and subjects in response to them left profound impressions on Mamluk state and society, precipitating a degree of social mobility and resulting in new forms of cultural expression. These transformations were also reflected in the frequent reports of protests during this period, and led to a greater diffusion of power and the opening up of spaces for political participation by Mamluk subjects and negotiations of power between ruler and ruled. Rather than tell the story of this tumultuous century solely from the point of view of the Mamluk dynasty, Crowds and Sultans places the protests within the framework of long-term transformations, arguing for a more nuanced and comprehensive narrative of Mamluk state and society in late medieval Egypt and Syria. Reports of urban protest and the ways in which alliances between different groups in Mamluk society were forged allow us glimpses into how some medieval Arab societies negotiated power, showing that rather than stoically endure autocratic governments, populations often resisted and renegotiated their positions in response to threats to their interests. This rich and thought-provoking study will appeal to specialists in Mamluk history, Islamic studies, and Arab history, as well as to students and scholars of Middle East politics and government and modern history.

The Collector of Bodies Concern for Syria and the Middle East【電子書籍】[ Diane Glancy ]

A 1994 trip to Syria and Jordan as an Arts America Speaker for the United States Information Agency began the group of poems for The Collector of Bodies. The manuscript stayed in a file until the Civil War began in Syria, March 18, 2011, the author's 70th birthday. The poems were retrieved, and the manuscript continued. Glancy wrote as an observer--as someone who had talked to the students in the universities--who had experienced a foreboding of what was ahead for Syria, especially after listening to the unrest of the students. In the bright sunlight, as they walked toward her, smiling, she felt an inexplicable point of grief. She heard the desire of the people to be free. Later, following the uprising of civil war on the news, she knew she was seeing the price the Syrians would pay for that desire. A visit to a foreign country leaves part of oneself in that place. But something in return is taken. This collection of poems explores the "something that is taken" with implications for the Christian believer and the issues involved. What can be done in a world full of refugees? Is there anything to do other than stand back and watch?

The Lure of Illusions a tale of intrigue and tragedy in war-torn Syria【電子書籍】[ Yannis Andricopoulos ]

Life in Damascus for Ari Boletis, UNRWA’s chief information officer in the Syrian capital, and Laura Heineken, the BBC journalist, is overshadowed by the civil war that has crippled the country. They are in love with each other and cherish their moments together, but at the same time they have to deal with the threats emanating from terrorist groups, criminal gangs or the ruthless state apparatus.

One day Laura is found dead in the rebel-held outskirts of Damascus. Her killers could be agents of Bashar al-Assad’s notorious secret police, members of terrorist organisations or, as Laura herself feared when still alive, high-ranking officers of the Jordanian intelligence. The latter, as she had discovered, were heavily involved in the black-marketing of weapons sent by the Americans for delivery to the Syrian rebels.

Ari sets as his task to identify Laura’s killers. In doing so, he moves from neighbourhoods ruined by the war to the capital’s high life districts and from the regime’s security headquarters to rebel-held areas. In the process, he acquaints himself fully with the interminable Middle Eastern violence and the cruel world of politics.

The latter is underscored not only by the savagery of the jihadis and the interweaving brutal conflicts between all parties involved in this war but also by the recklessness of the West’s Middle Eastern policy which has irrevocably turned the entire region into a battlefield. As Ari discovered when he came across a major incendiary plot, it has also turned the West into the hostage of its regional allies and trapped Washington into situations that could easily lead to the-end-of-the-world final battle.

The story is fictional, yet it develops against a political background that reflects the impetuous pursuit of self-interest in a world that no longer sees madness as an abnormality but as a lubricant. Politics has ended up at the mercy of its protagonists’ illusions, each one of them convinced that the future is their property.

Quicksilver War Syria, Iraq and the Spiral of Conflict【電子書籍】[ William Harris ]

Quicksilver War is a panoramic political history of the wars that coursed through Syria and Iraq in the wake of the 'Arab Spring' and eventually merged to become a regional catastrophe: a kaleidoscopic and constantly shifting conflict involving many different parties and phases. William Harris distils the highly complex dynamics behind the conflict, starting with the brutalizing Baathist regimes in Damascus and Baghdad. He charts the malignant consequences of incompetent US occupation of Iraq and Bashar al-Assad's self-righteous mismanagement of Syria, through the implosion of Syria, and the emergence of eastern and western theatres of war focused respectively on future control of Syria and the challenge of ISIS. Beyond the immediate arena of conflict, geopolitical riptides have also been set in motion, including Turkey's embroilment in the war and the shifting circumstances of the Kurds. This sweeping history addresses urgent questions for our time. Will the world rubber-stamp and bankroll the Russian-led 'solution' in Syria, backed by Turkey and Iran? Is the 'Quicksilver War' about to reach an explosive finale? Or will ongoing political maneuvering mutate into years of further violence?

Civilizing Contention International Aid in Syria's War【電子書籍】[ Rana B. Khoury ]

In Civilizing Contention**, Rana B. Khoury asserts that to understand civilian and refugee activism in war, we must regard the international actors and organizations that enter the scene to help.** When these organizations respond to crises, they work with local actors. In so doing, they facilitate the activists' participation in something like a civil society even in the depths of war. Yet as aid imposes its structures and routines, it also leaves activists unprotected from the violence of war and its aftermaths.

Khoury pursues these ideas through analysis of Syria's war that emerged from the 2011 Arab Uprisings. She traces the afterlife of a social movement that did not merely take up arms or capitulate to repression. Interviews with Syrian activists and international aid workers in Jordan, Turkey, and Lebanon provide insight into action among actors in the war, while original social media data offers additional evidence. Civilizing Contention deepens knowledge of civilian and refugee agency by explaining how ordinary people act in extraordinary ways in a world structured by powerful forces.

The Battle for Syria, 1918-1920【電子書籍】[ John D Grainger ]

This book charts the continuing war between Britain and France on the one side and the Turkish Empire on the other following the British capture of Jerusalem in 1917. It outlines how the British prepared for their advance, bringing in Indian and Australian troops; how the Turks were defeated at the great Battle of Megiddo in September 1918; and how Damascus fell, the Australians and the Arab army, which had harassed the Turks in the desert, arriving almostsimultaneously. It goes on to relate how the French arrived, late, to take over territory allocated to them in the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1915, territory which included both Syria and Lebanon; how influenza had a severely detrimental impact on the allied advance; and how the Turks regrouped, successfully, north of Aleppo, and prevented further allied advance. The book also discusses the peace negotiations which followed the armistice, examining how nationalist aspirations were thwarted, how the French imperial grip on Syria was gradually strengthened, and how the Arab leader, Faisal, ousted from Syria, was provided with a kingdom by the British in Iraq. At a time when new turmoil in Syria is again in the headlines, this study provides exceptionally timely information on how Syria was fought over and shaped as rule over the country by the Turkish Empire was ended.

John D. Grainger is the authorof numerous books for a variety of publishers, including five previously published books for Boydell and Brewer, including The Battle for Palestine, 1917 and Dictionary of British Naval Battles.

Breaking Knees Sixty-three Very Short Stories from Syria【電子書籍】[ Zakaria Tamer ]

Wry, satirical and bawdy, Tamer's stories are always informed by his dark view of humanity and of Syrian society in particular. Through these glimpses of corrupt, fearful lives under a violent dictatorship, it is possible to discern echoes of the storm that has brought Syria to near-disintegration. Tamer's stories explore taboos and power relations, bringing together religion, politics and sexuality (often all at once) and implying that these forms of oppression are connected. An assault is deflected when the victim responds enthusiastically; a woman is spared stoning because the streets have no cobbles, and her neighbours cannot afford any; A comatose man awakens after years to find the regime unchanged, and tries to escape back into the coma; a newborn baby curses the hospital staff that delivers him, and when his mother tries to quiet him, retorts: 'You're talking like our leaders!'; a man is warned by two apples not to eat them, and anxiously questions them about their political connections. Unsentimental and brilliantly compressed, these sixty-three stories are the work of a virtuoso, and translator Ibrahim Muhawi has found exactly the right deadpan style with which to express them.
