Why Do Americans Go Abroad to Fight in Foreign Conflicts? Why do Americans travel abroad to fight in civil conflicts? Since proclaiming the caliphate in 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) has been recruiting men and women to the battlefields of Syria and Iraq from countries around the world. This study explores why American men and women volunteered to join ISIS and leave behind their families, their friends, and the comforts of American society. The profiles reviewed in the thesis were built from open-source documents. Three drivers were explored to explain this phenomenon: integration deficit, social media, and network connections. This study concluded that bidirectional social media use and social network connections were present in most of the cases surveyed.＜/p＞＜p＞The two most important reasons to study foreign fighters are the threat they pose to America's security and interests abroadーincluding the security and interests of America's alliesーand the inherent danger of their return home as seasoned veterans of extremist causes. Since 9/11, United States citizens have left or attempted to leave participate in civil conflicts. The number we are concerned with is those who have left or attempted to leave the United States to aid the Islamic State. These militants are used as suicide bombers, propaganda agents, and general fighters for extremist organizations, such as Moner Mohammad Abu Salha, an American who was used as a suicide bomber in Syria in the name of al-Nusra front. Moner was motivated by lectures from Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical cleric. The radicalization of Abu Salha led to his suicide attack, in which he drove a truck filled with explosives into a restaurant filled with agents of the Syrian government. U.S. laws and interests prohibit support for anti-American extremists abroad. Providing Material Support to Terrorists, 18 U.S.C 2339A, is a law originally enacted in 1994 then expanded in 1996 to include providing property, money, lodging, training, and/or expert advice or assistance. Therefore, the U.S. strategy to stabilize Iraq and other conflict zones is threatened by support for ISIS from its own citizens.＜/p＞＜p＞Radicalization within the United States is not a new problem, but the potential for returning foreign fighters makes the threat even more menacing. "It is estimated that one out of every nine foreign fighters are likely to conduct a 'blowback' attack in their home country after returning from fighting abroad." For example, in the case of France and Belgium, the terrorists are homegrown lone actors who had traveled to Syria and back. Therefore, understanding the underlying motivations and causal drivers of American foreign fighters is a pressing security concern. Developed over time within the U.S. Department of Defense, a net assessment has been described as a practice or methodology based on asking questions from a variety of distinctive perspectives. It focuses on how the enemy operates and who the enemy is. It tries to understand how the enemy thinks about the U.S. in order to anticipate its strategy, if not its individual actions. To conduct a net assessment of ISIS, one needs to look at the strategic interactions of its component parts, its internal bureaucratic behavior, and the multifaceted nature of its strategy.＜/p＞＜p＞ISIS developed its strategic approach within the modern jihadist tradition, which al Qaeda violently introduced to the United States with a series of escalating attacks culminating in the attacks of September 11, 2001. It subsequently examines why and how elite factions have used armed organizations in times of conflict. This approach links an understanding of the broad evolution of power relations at the national level with the specific effects of the use of armed organizations on such relations. It argues for a shift from assigning fixed labels to armed organizations during civil wars to studying their coercive profile in a dynamic fashion, i.e. how armed organizations behave in terms of their use of threats and coercive force. The book introduces five profiles of coercive behaviour that demonstrate how the same organization can behave very differently at various points in time. One of these, the ‘hybrid coercive profile’, fills a gap in the existing civil war typology of organized armed violence by opening up the possibility of elite factions deliberately combining collaborative and competitive modes of behaviour. As an evidence base, the book provides in-depth analysis of the origins, evolution and operations of four armed organizations that have acted under a hybrid coercive profile during the Syrian and Iraqi civil wars: the Syrian Kurdish People’s Defence Forces, the Eagles of the Whirlwind of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, the Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga and the Badr Organization. Using a dataset of more than 13,000 pieces of official visual propaganda distributed from January 2015 to June 2018, this report examines how the production of such pieces has changed over this timeframe in terms of the number of pieces distributed, the geographic dynamics associated with the production of propaganda, and the content featured in these products. Through the course of this examination, several key findings emerge: Official visual propaganda production has decreased significantly: According to the CTC's collection criteria, August 2015 represented the high-water mark for the production of official visual propaganda, -with 754 releases. The low-point occurred in June 2018, -with 44 releases. This represents a 94-percent decrease in visual propaganda production. It is important to note that this decrease does not account for non-visual production such as text-only tweets. Despite the decrease, fluctuation in visual propaganda production is likely to continue: At the macro level, production rebounded slightly in January 2018 before falling off again. This follows a more sustained rebound in production that occurred in late 2016.
