Deep Indigo Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte and St. Yves de Verteuil in Tobago 1933-1978【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Cadiz Topp ]

Daughter of an English lord, and married to the man who owned The Savoy, Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte enjoyed all of the privileges that wealth and position could offer in pre-war England. But then, in the 1930s, she visited Trinidad and Tobago and fell in love, both with the beauty and charm of the islands, and with the author's great uncle, St. Yves de Verteuil. She would spend the rest of her long life in Tobago, deeply involved in the community in which she lived.

In Deep Indigo, author Elizabeth Cadiz Topp draws on family lore, historical research, and a rich imagination to breathe life into a story she first heard as a child. Infused with joy, humour and heartbreak, it tells the story of a courageous, generous and eccentric woman who defied the society she grew up in and found her own way.

Foreign Policy Formulation and Implementation of Small States The Case of Trinidad and Tobago【電子書籍】[ Faies Jafar ]

The foreign policy behavior of small states, which in today’s world comprise some sixty countries, is not prominently represented in academia. Studies associated with these states’ foreign policy tend to focus on their behavior in the international arena with a clear dominance of realist thoughts. Small states are often seen from a closed-box approach where the internal factors, leadership, and other domestic issues are given scant attention by scholars, leaving substantial and important gaps in the knowledge.

This book which emerged from original and extensive research over five years, attempts to fill some of these gaps. The book is concerned with the foreign policy formulation and implementation of the small Caribbean state of Trinidad and Tobago, and without the claim of generalization, it is hoped that similar studies will encourage scholars to develop a wider theory about small states’ foreign policy behavior. The foreign policy process and the associated factors provide insights and help to develop an epistemic framework as to how the twin-island state behaved under objective and subjective constraints and more specifically, how the decision-makers choose their foreign policy preferences.

The Islamic State and the Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago in the 21st Century【電子書籍】[ Daurius Figueira ]

This work analyses: (1) the discursive terrain of the Muslim community/Ummah of Trinidad and Tobago from the Jihad of the Jamaat al Muslimeen on July 27th, 1990 to 2015 with emphasis on the evolution of militant Islam in this period. (2) It deconstructs the discourse of the Islamic State constructed to motivate Muslims of the world, especially of the West to migrate/to undertake Hijrah to the Islamic State with emphasis on the discursive concepts of the Islamic Apocalypse, the Malahim, Hijrah and Jihad is War. (3) It deconstructs the specific discourse of the Islamic State constituted for the Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago which reveals the importance of the Trinidad and Tobago contingent to the propaganda machinery of the Islamic State. (4) It deconstructs the discourse of the survivors which reveals the complex motivational structure that drove Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago to journey to the Islamic State. What is revealed is a power relation between the Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago who are a minority group of the population of Trinidad and Tobago, the kufr State of Trinidad and Tobago and the discourse of the Islamic State. The reality that the Trinidad and Tobago contingent to Islamic State was the largest per capita amongst Muslims that undertook Hijrah to the Islamic State speaks volumes to the susceptibility of the Muslim community to the call of the Islamic State. This work deconstructs the underlying reality that ensured the virulence of the discourse of the Islamic State in its impact on Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago.

Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago【電子書籍】[ Rita Pemberton ]

As separate entities and later a unified state, the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago boast very unique histories. Initially claimed by the Spanish in 1498, these territories were affected by the imperialist thrusts of various European nations including the French, British and Dutch. The mercantilist infiltrations of these groups, particularly in the 18th century, led to the islands’ belated development as sugar producers and, particularly Trinidad, as a cradle of migration. World War II and the development of the oil and tourism industries in the 20th century transformed the economies, culture and society of these islands. The country has been one of the most important in the region in relation to economic and political leadership and as a centre of cultural development.

Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Trinidad and Tobago.

"Oh Gord! Doh Shoot Meh Nah!" The Tragedy of Extrajudicial Killings in Trinidad & Tobago【電子書籍】[ Ishmael Samad ]

Since the ignominious days of Commissioner of Police Randolph Burroughs, extrajudicial killings have been a heinous component of policing in Trinidad &Tobago. Oh Gord! Doh Shoot Meh Nah! focuses on thirteen instances when the police assumed the role of judge, jury, and executioner. Twenty two persons lost their life as a result: Glen Liverpool, Jordan Charles, Hayden Goddard, Lincoln Forde, Wendy Courtney, Jaime Kevin Taitt, Thaddeaus Wade, Njisane Omowale, Adisa Wellington, Aneisha Neptune, Tristan Cobbler, Kevon Blake, Barry Lewis, Kwame Bourne, Joel Romain, Akee Caballero, Kerwyn Joseph, Daaniyaal Coltes, Kamal Krishna Ramdial, Kerron Eccles, Allana Duncan, and Abigail Johnson. Kerwyn Joseph was before the courts on a gang-related offence. Thaddeus Wade faced an armed-robbery charge while Daaniyaal Coltes was the prime suspect in one homicide. The others, with perhaps one or two exceptions, were all law-abiding citizens, innocent of any crime. Furthermore, they were all unarmed. Oh Gord! Doh Shoot Meh Nah! comprises of letters, emails, newspaper reports, editorials, as well as the eulogy for Glen Liverpool and a memorable poem by Njisane Omowale. An Appendix contains Amnesty International 2006 T&T Report: End Police Immunity for Unlawful Killings and Death in Custody; the UN Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials; the UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials, and an essay entitled the Moral Law.

Fueling Development How Black Radical Trade Unionism Transformed Trinidad and Tobago【電子書籍】[ Zophia Edwards ]

Despite Trinidad and Tobago’s economic dependence on oil and gas production and its history of colonial exploitation of labor and resources, it enjoys relatively high democratic and redistributive development compared to other nations in the global South. In Fueling Development, Zophia Edwards draws on archival data, historical analysis, and Black radical political economic thought to trace Trinidad and Tobago’s success to a specific form of working-class mobilization she calls “liberation unionism.” A Black radical labor tradition, liberation unionism was multiracial, multisectoral, and gender inclusive; and Pan-African, anti-imperial, anticolonial, and diasporic; it advocated not only for workplace issues, but for economic, political, and social transformation. Emerging during the colonial period, liberation unionism forced the colonial state to increase its institutional capacity to promote equitable development. The movement persisted into the post-independence period and further compelled the independent state to channel oil windfalls toward increasing its ability to better serve the needs of the people. By uncovering liberation unionism’s power to create robust social and economic change, Edwards expands understandings of the relationship between development, race, labor, and political economy.

The Petro-state Masquerade Oil, Sovereignty, and Power in Trinidad and Tobago【電子書籍】[ Ryan Cecil Jobson ]

A historical and ethnographic study of the fraught relationship between fossil fuels and political power in Trinidad and Tobago.

Examining the past, present, and future of Trinidad and Tobago’s oil and gas industries, anthropologist Ryan Cecil Jobson traces how a model of governance fashioned during prior oil booms is imperiled by declining fossil fuel production and a loss of state control. Despite the twin-island nation’s increasingly volatile and vulnerable financial condition, however, government officials continue to promote it as a land of inexhaustible resources and potentially limitless profits.

The result is what Jobson calls a “masquerade of permanence” whereby Trinbagonian state actors represent the nation as an interminable reserve of hydrocarbons primed for multinational investment. In The Petro-state Masquerade, Jobson examines the gulf between this narrative crafted by the postcolonial state and the vexed realities of its dwindling petroleum-fueled aspirations. After more than a century of commercial oil production, Trinidad and Tobago instructs us to regard the petro-state as less a permanent form than a fragile relation between fossil fuels and sovereign authority. Foregrounding the concurrent masquerades of oil workers, activists, and Carnival revelers, Jobson argues that the promise of decolonization lies in the disarticulation of natural resources, capital, and political power by ordinary people in the Caribbean.

Il Carnevale di Trinidad e Tobago. Tradizioni e curiosit? dell'evento pi? atteso dell'anno【電子書籍】[ Pamela Preschern ]

Ticks of Trinidad and Tobago - an Overview【電子書籍】[ Roxanne Charles ]

Ticks of Trinidad and Tobago: An Overview explores tick species prevalent in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), their distribution, associated pathogens, their effects on the host, and control methods. The book also reviews the basic biology of ticks. Ticks are known to parasitize a wide range of hosts including mammals, reptiles and birds. These parasites are of veterinary and public health significance since they are responsible for the spread of a number of pathogens to humans and animals. Worldwide, ticks are responsible for billions of dollars in losses in the livestock industry annually due to the effects of these pathogens. Based on review of the literature from more than five decades, twenty-three species of both hard and soft tick have been discovered on the twin-island republic with a greater number of species in Trinidad. Tick genera observed and recorded included Argas, Ornithodoros, Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes, and Rhipicephalus species. The tick species found in Trinidad and Tobago parasitize both wild and domestic species. Hosts include bats, fowl, equids, wild and domestic ruminants, birds, rodents, marsupials, and a variety of reptiles such as toads, tortoises, and snakes. Based on geographical location, most tick species discovered in T&T have also been recorded in other Caribbean islands in the archipelago, North, Central and South America. Both soft and hard tick species found in T&T have also been implicated in a number of blood-borne pathogens including Borrelia, Ehrlichia, Babesia, Hepatozoon, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma. - Examines the biology of tick species on hosts endemic to Trinidad and Tobago - Provides pictorial keys - Facilitates identification, prevention, and control of tick-borne diseases in the tropical region - Assists with diagnosing tick-borne diseases

The British Colonial Discourse of the Indian Threat/ the East Indian Problem in the Politics of the Colony of Trinidad and Tobago (1953-1961), Deconstructed (Revised) The Simbhoonath Capildeo Dossier, #2【電子書籍】[ Daurius Figueira ]

This work originally published in 2009 has been thoroughly revised and republished in 2025 to complete the Simbhoonath Capildeo Dossier. Part 2 focuses on the power relations between the politicians of Trinidad and Tobago for the period 1953 to 1961, namely Dr. Eric Williams, Bhadase Sagan Maraj, Tubal Uriah Butler and Rudranath Capildeo and the British colonial overlord. This work utilises de-classified British government files available at the National Archives of Britain, specifically de-classified files for the period generated by the colonial national security apparatus of Trinidad and Tobago. From these files the hegemonic discourse of the colonial overlord was unearthed and deconstructed revealing the British political agenda for granting independence to the colony of T&T. This British agenda was driven by its disocurse of the "Indian Threat", "The East Indian Problem" in T&T which must be defanged before independence is granted. A chapter on the British de-classified files on Dr Williams before independence in 1962 and thereafter are also included which reveals the approach of the colonial/neo-colonial overlord on Dr Williams. A second section of the work presents for comparative analysis the British colonial agenda for independence for Guyana and the servility of the British governments to the USA and its agenda to bring down the PPP hegemony over the electoral politics of Guyana by any means necessary, which they did. This work then presents a comparative analysis of the agenda of the British colonial overlord for independence for Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana where in T&T they rejected the idea of an Indian/Hindu dominated government whilst in Guyana they embraced Dr Cheddi Jagan and the PPP despite the protests of the USA.

Tubal Uriah Butler of Trinidad and Tobago Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana The Road to Independence【電子書籍】[ Daurius Figueira ]

This work explodes myths on the decolonization process in former British colonies of Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana. Myths that masked the fact that the British colonial overlord with the full support of their local lackeys stage managed the process to ensure that compliant regimes were put in place as the inheritors of Independence from the British. Tubal Uriah Butler was systematically destroyed as a political leader to end his threat to the political order as he was not of the required material to be an inheritor of Independence. Kwame Nkrumah was fit to rule Ghana but he was subsequently removed in 1966. The social orders of Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana have been deeply impacted by British machinations on the road to Independence to this day.

The Politics of Racist Hegemony in Trinidad and Tobago【電子書籍】[ Daurius Figueira ]

This work is a deconstruction of the political discourse of politicians in Trinidad and Tobago from the 1950's to the present. This deconstruction has revealed a discourse of racist hegemony is the basis for political mobilisation in Trinidad and Tobago as it frames a mental image of a hegemonic race wielding state power over a dominated race consigned to the wilderness of opposition politics. The resources of the state exist then for the benefit of the hegemonic race and those who conceive of self as belonging to races in competition for state resources must then do their political duty to ensure the hegemony of their race. Politics has nothing to do with governance, personal and social development.

Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana Race and Politics in Two Plural Societies【電子書籍】[ John Gaffar La Guerre ]

In this book an attempt is made to probe more carefully the processes by which social and ethnic problems, as these pertain to Caribbean countries, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, are conveyed to the political arena and the mechanisms by which they determine critical outcomes. The authors of this book have accordingly distinguished between predisposing factors and what are described as triggering mechanisms. The factors that trigger dramatic changes will differ between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. In short, while in some respects these societies are similar, in others, there are dramatic differences in their respective histories and political developments.

This study begins with a survey of the literature on race relations and their connections with politics; it then proceeds to examine the context for the insertion of the two major groups into these societies, the emergence of ethnic groups, and their relationships with political organizations. The nature and politics of the leaders are then analyzed along with the political structures with a view to identifying what factors were responsible for the differing political experiences of both countries.

How to Make Effective Legislative Proposals Trinidad and Tobago Legislative Process【電子書籍】[ Bilika H. Simamba ]

This book outlines the way in which legislative proposals in Trinidad and Tobago are conceived and processed. It also contains best practice suggestions on interfacing with Parliamentary Counsel regardless of the jurisdiction in which one is working. Those suggestions are based on the authors well-received earlier publication The Legislative Process: A Handbook for Public Officials (2009). That book was featured significantly in The Parliamentarian: Journal of Commonwealth Parliaments, 2010, Issue 1 XCI. In a review contained in The Loophole: Journal of the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel (August, 2010), the reviewer wrote, In these times of recession I commend this book to anyone in Government wishing to improve processes to enable the production of legislation with improved efficiency and cost effectiveness. And in the Statute Law Review (April, 2010), 31(2), with reference to its suggestions for improved efficiency, it was said that . . . there is little that can be described as other than good advice here.

Sixty Years of Independence Achievements, Challenges and the Road Ahead for Trinidad and Tobago【

All countries aim to achieve high rates of economic growth; many strive to improve living standards and quality of life for their people. However, in a world where events and circumstances often influence a country and its economy, these factors are not always fully within the control of those responsible for leadership and development.

Sixty Years of Independence examines Trinidad and Tobago’s progress since independence in 1962, against such strivings and challenges, with the aim of identifying both genuine achievements and persistent flaws or gaps. The contributors to this volume share common assumptions that it is essential to broaden and deepen democracy; that it is desirable to achieve shared prosperity through higher levels of productivity and more meaningful levels of economic development; and that the drivers of economic progress, as well as the active build out of social infrastructure to support human development, are both essential for genuine and sustainable developmental progress.

These reflections on Trinidad and Tobago’s sixty-year journey as an independent, sovereign nation are well worth reading not only for the information they provide, nor solely for the historical context they offer across various sectors, or even for the fact that the contributors are individuals who have both shaped and reflected on national development. This book is worth reading because each chapter presents thoughtful, substantive insights that encourage readers to examine their own perspectives on development, whether they live, and to consider how progress might be pursued more effectively and meaningfully. For policymakers in particular, this volume offers both inspiration and practical guidance on the way forward.

The Autobiography of Dr Colin Brian Furlonge In The Public Service of Trinidad and Tobago【電子書籍】[ Colin Brian Furlonge ]

In this expansive autobiography, Dr Furlonge provides a detailed expose as the 'victim of a history of prejudicial treatment'. This treatment was directed by the Government of the day and guided by the Public Service Commission (PSC) - an institution created by the Constitution of a post-colonial Commonwealth Republic. In 2004, he was compelled to resort to the High Court of Justice, whose Judgement stated that, '...compliance with PSC Regulations is necessary if there is to be confidence in the Public Service; failure to do so results in the warranted suspicion of arbitrariness, discrimination, bias, partiality and even political interference, especially when division along ethnic and political lines are often determinative of the perception of reality...'. It concluded that, '...the Applicant felt legitimately aggrieved.' The treatment described in the Judgement was frequently repeated throughout his public service career and beyond. Dr Furlonge encourages all public servants to be resolute in giving honest, professional and evidence-based advice, and to retain all the necessary records to support their endeavours. He passionately recommends that Administrations and Oversight Commissions must adhere avidly to the rules and regulations if they are to instil trust and confidence in the public service, and engender hope for the future.
