In China z.B. nehmen 10 Millionen Menschen den Schl?ger f?r Wettk?mpfe in die Hand (Wolf, 2000, 87). Addiert man Spieler aus weiteren asiatischen L?ndern wie Japan, Nord- und S?d-Korea hinzu, so kann man feststellen, dass ca. 50% aller aktiven Tischtennisspieler der Welt allein in Asien spielen. Die Folge ist, dass die Asiaten, besonders die Chinesen, den Tischtennissport dominieren und um diese Vormachtstellung zu behalten, eine restriktive und bisweilen blockierende Sportpolitik innerhalb der International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) betrieben haben. Diese blockierende Haltung, die bis weit in die 90er Jahre hinein reichte, f?hrte zu einem Reformstau und Imageverlust des Tischtennis. So gingen die Mitgliederzahlen als Folge dieser Sportpolitik allein in Deutschland innerhalb von 9 Jahren um mehr als 75.000 Mitglieder zur?ck (St?ckmann, 2005, 37). Um diesen Trend zu durchbrechen konnte der Pr?sident des ITTF Adham Sharara die Vertreter des Chinesischen Tischtennisverbands davon ?berzeugen, sich einer Modernisierung des Tischtennissports anzuschlie?en. Durch diese Modernisierung erhoffte er sich, das Tischtennisspiel auch in nicht asiatischen Staaten popul?rer machen zu k?nnen. Als Mittel der Popularisierung soll dabei hier das Fernsehen dienen: 'Wenn wir nicht im Fernsehen sind, sind wir tot.' (zit. nach Nelson, 2000, 45). Das Ziel der ITTF ist somit klar definiert: Popularisierung des Sports ?ber das Medium Fernsehen. Jedoch liegt die derzeitig zehnt gr??te Sportart Deutschlands (vgl. DSB, 2005, 6-8) im Bereich Fernsehpr?senz gerade mal auf dem zw?lften Platz aller Sportarten in Deutschland (vgl. IFM Medienanalysen, 2004, 46) und ist selbst f?r eine Sportart ihrer Gr??e unterrepr?sentiert.
