Diaspora and Trust Cuba, Mexico, and the Rise of China【電子書籍】[ Adrian H. Hearn ]
|

In Diaspora and Trust Adrian H. Hearn proposes that a new paradigm of socio-economic development is gaining importance for Cuba and Mexico. Despite their contrasting political ideologies, both countries must build new forms of trust among the state, society, and resident Chinese diaspora communities if they are to harness the potentials of China’s rise. Combining political and economic analysis with ethnographic fieldwork, Hearn analyzes Cuba's and Mexico's historical relations with China, and highlights how Chinese diaspora communities are now deepening these ties. Theorizing trust as an alternative to existing models of exchangeーwhich are failing to navigate the world's shifting economic currentsーHearn shows how Cuba and Mexico can reformulate the balance of power between state, market, and society. A new paradigm of domestic development and foreign engagement based on trust is becoming critical for Cuba, Mexico, and other countries seeking to benefit from China’s growing economic power and social influence.

Kennedy's Wars Berlin, Cuba, Laos, and Vietnam【電子書籍】[ Lawrence Freedman ]
|

In his thousand-day presidency, John F. Kennedy led America through one of its most difficult and potentially explosive eras. With the Cold War at its height and the threat of communist advances in Europe and the Third World, Kennedy had the unenviable task of maintaining U.S. solidarity without leading the western world into a nuclear catastrophe. In Kennedy's Wars, noted historian Lawrence Freedman draws on the best of Cold War scholarship and newly released government documents to illuminate Kennedy's approach to war and his efforts for peace. He recreates insightfully the political and intellectual milieu of the foreign policy establishment during Kennedy's era with vivid profiles of his top advisors--Robert McNamara, Dean Rusk, Robert Kennedy--and influential figures such as Dean Acheson and Walt Rostow. Tracing the evolution of traditional liberalism into the Cold War liberalism of Kennedy's cabinet, Freedman evaluates their responses to the tensions in Berlin, Cuba, Laos, and Vietnam. He gives each conflict individual attention, showing how foreign policy decisions came to be defined for each new crisis in the light of those that had gone before. Readers will follow Kennedy as he wrestles with the succession of major conflicts--taking advice, weighing the risks of inadvertently escalating the Cold War into outright military confrontation, exploring diplomatic options, and forming strategic judgments that would eventually prevent a major war during his presidency. Kennedy's Wars offers a dynamic and human portrait of Kennedy under pressure: a political leader shaped by the ideas of his time, conscious of his vulnerability to electoral defeat but also of his nation's vulnerability to nuclear war. Military and Kennedy enthusiasts will find its balanced consideration of the president's foreign policy and provocative "what if" scenarios invaluable keys to understanding his accomplishments, failures, and enduring legacy.

Cuba in Transition: Impressions and Reflections【電子書籍】[ Trip Kennedy ]
|

In 1959, the US media portrayed Fidel Castro as a Latin American land reformer leading the struggle against Cuba's brutally repressive Fulgencio Batista. By 1960, Castro had become a dangerous Communist. Contradictory narratives about Castro and Cuba have been the norm ever since. Expatriates denounce the one-party police state that has impoverished its populace. More sympathetic observers point to Cuba's universal, free public education system and developed-world health care outcomes. A 2010 Havana choir festival provided the opportunity for a month-long, 10 city trip through the Island. Cuba in Transition combines traditional travel narrative with the author's observations of Cuba and thoughts about possible directions for its evolution, fifty-plus years after the Revolution.

Transitions and Non-Transitions from Communism Regime Survival in China, Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam【電子書籍】[ Steven Saxonberg ]

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, many scholars have sought to explain the collapse of communism. Yet, more than two decades on, communist regimes continue to rule in a diverse set of countries including China, Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam. In a unique study of fourteen countries, Steven Saxonberg explores the reasons for the survival of some communist regimes while others fell. He also shows why the process of collapse differed among communist-led regimes in Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Based on the analysis of the different processes of collapse that has already taken place, and taking into account the special characteristics of the remaining communist regimes, Transitions and Non-Transitions from Communism discusses the future prospects for the survival of the regimes in China, Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam.

Disease, Resistance, and Lies The Demise of the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Brazil and Cuba【電子書籍】[ Dale T. Graden ]
|

In the early nineteenth century the major economic players of the Atlantic trade lanes -- the United States, Brazil, and Cuba -- witnessed explosive commercial growth. Commodities like cotton, coffee, and sugar contributed to the fantastic wealth of an elite few and the enslavement of many. As a result of an increased population and concurrent economic expansion, the United States widened its trade relationship with Cuba and Brazil, importing half of Brazil's coffee exports and 82 percent of Cuba's total exports by 1877. Disease, Resistance, and Lies examines the impact of these burgeoning markets on the Atlantic slave trade between these countries from 1808 -- when the U.S. government outlawed American involvement in the slave trade to Cuba and Brazil -- to 1867, when slave traffic to Cuba ceased.
In his comparative study, Dale Graden engages several important historiographic debates, including the extent to which U.S. merchants and capital facilitated the slave trade to Brazil and Cuba, the role of infectious disease in ending the trade to those countries, and the effect of slave revolts in helping to bring the transatlantic slave trade to an end.
Graden situates the transatlantic slave trade within the expanding and rapidly changing international economy of the first half of the nineteenth century, offering a fresh analysis of the "Southern Triangle Trade" that linked Cuba, Brazil, and Africa. Disease, Resistance, and Lies challenges more conservative interpretations of the waning decades of the transatlantic slave trade by arguing that the threats of infectious disease and slave resistance both influenced policymakers to suppress slave traffic to Brazil and Cuba and also made American merchants increasingly unwilling to risk their capital in the transport of slaves.

Anarchist Cuba Countercultural Politics in the Early Twentieth Century【電子書籍】[ Kirwin Shaffer ]
|

This is the first critical, in-depth study of the anarchist movement in Cuba in the three decades after the republic’s independence from Spain in 1898. Kirwin Shaffer shows that anarchists played a significantーuntil now little-knownーrole among Cuban leftists in shaping issues of health, education, immigration, the environment, and working-class internationalism. They also criticized the state of racial politics, cultural practices, and the conditions of children and women on the island.

In the chaotic new country, members of the anarchist movement reinterpreted the War for Independence and the revolutionary ideas of patriot Jos? Mart?, embarking on a nationwide debate with the larger Cuban establishment about what it meant to be “Cuban.” To counter the dominant culture, the anarchists created their own initiativesーschools, health institutes, vegetarian restaurants, theater and fiction writing groups, and occasional calls for nudismーand as a result they challenged both the existing elite and the occupying U.S. military forces.

Shaffer also focuses on what anarchists did to prepare the masses for a social revolution. While many of the Cuban anarchists' ideals flowed from Europe, their programs, criticisms, and literature reflected the specifics of Cuban reality and appealed to Cuba’s popular classes. Using theories of working-class internationalism, countercultures, popular culture, and social movements, Shaffer analyzes archival records, pamphlets, newspapers, and novels, showing how the anarchist movement in republican Cuba helped shape the country’s early leftist revolutionary agenda.

Shaffer’s portrait of the conflict between anarchists and their enemies illuminates the multiple forces that pervaded life on the island in the twentieth century, until the rise of the Gerardo Machado dictatorship in the 1920s. This important book places anarchism in its rightful historical role as a vital current within Cuban radical political culture.

Cuba Lifting the Veil【電子書籍】[ Carlyle MacDuff ]

Carlyle MacDuff is married to a Cuban citizen and their home is in Cuba. He has acute awareness of politics having lived in several countries and has British military and parliamentary experience. His late father held high office in the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and his brother became a Cabinet Minister in Canada. Having the unusual experience of spending the majority of his time in Cuba as a member of a Cuban family well away from the popular tourist resorts enables him to fully explain the realities of life for the average Cuban. Since 2013 there has been an increasing understanding in the free democratic world particularly by ill-informed politicians that undefined change is occurring within Cuba. MacDuff questions what President Raul Castro Ruz has actually contributed towards change in the lives of Cubans or whether the external hopes are merely a consequence of masterly political cosmetics. Do a few very minor changes constitute a change of thought by the Castro family regime or are they a demonstration of Raul Castros manipulative political talents? MacDuffs experiences lead him to conclude that although communism can endeavor to contain, it cannot quench the thirst for freedom that is a natural desire by mankind including Cubans and is demonstrated by so many risking their lives in their endeavors to flee. The Castro family communist regime rigidly demands conformity with their vision, no other is permitted. The author explains very simply the requirements for Cubans seeking to have a quiet life: Dont challenge the system, accept it, stay mute and exist. MacDuff concludes Cuba Lifting the Veil by writing: For the people of Cuba there remains only that faint hope which they have tenaciously clung onto for so many long years. Hope for the younger generations that they may yet know freedom and opportunity to live in their beautiful country free of repression, with freedom of expression, freedom of the media and freedom to vote for political parties of choice. Cubans deserve no less, for only then will they become members of an open society in a free world that waits to welcome them with open arms. Liberty and that poignant cry for freedom beckon and humanity demands.
