Autonomy and Normativity Investigations of Truth, Right and Beauty【電子書籍】[ Richard Dien Winfield ]

This title was first published in 2001. Autonomy and Normativity explores central topics in current philosophical debate, challenging the prevailing post-modern dogma that theory, practice and art are captive to contingent historical foundations by showing how foundational dilemmas are overcome once validity is recognized to reside in self-determination. Through constructive arguments covering the principal topics and controversies in epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics, Autonomy and Normativity demonstrates how truth, right and beauty can retain universal validity without succumbing to the mistaken Enlightenment strategy of seeking foundations for rational autonomy. Presenting a compact, yet comprehensive statement of a powerful and provocative alternative to the reigning orthodoxies of current philosophical debate, Richard Winfield employs Hegelian techniques and focus to object to opponents, and presents a radical and systematic critique of the work of mainstream thinkers including Kant, Rawls, Husserl, Habermas and others. The ramifications for the legitimation of modernity are thoroughly explored, in conjunction with an analysis of the fate of theory, practice and art in the modern world. This book offers an invaluable resource for students of both analytic and continental philosophical traditions, and related areas of law, social theory and aesthetics.

French Warships in the Age of Sail, 1626?1786 Design, Construction, Careers and Fates【電子書籍】[ Rif Winfield ]

“The first comprehensive listing of these ships in English. . . . Profusely illustrated [and] impressively informative.” ーMidwest Book Review

The origins of a permanent French sailing navy can be traced to the work of Cardinal Richelieu in the 1620s, but this naval force declined rapidly in the 1650s and a virtually new Marine Royale had to be re-created by Colbert from 1661. Thereafter, Louis XIV’s navy grew rapidly to become the largest and most powerful in the world, at the same time establishing a reputation for the quality of its ship design that lasted until the end of sail.

The eighteenth century was to see defeat and decline, revival and victory, but by 1786 the French Navy had emerged from its most successful naval war having frequently outfought or outmaneuvred the British Navy in battle, and in the process making a major contribution to American independence. This book provides significant technical and building data as well as highlights of the careers of each ship in every class. For the first time, it is possible to form a clear picture of the overall development of French warships throughout the whole of the sailing era.

“A handy and quick reference to a variety of vessels . . . He is tall in stature, robust in figure, with movements of easy dignity…In action…dignity gives way to activity; his features become animated, his voice loud, his eyes are on fire, his blood kindles, and his bearing is that of a man carried away by passion the character of his bravery Regis de TrobriandWinfield Scott Hancock was an intimidating figure who impressed friends, foes, and fellow generals alike. Known as Hancock the Superb after McClellan described his performance as such during the Battle of Williamsburg in the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, Hancock eventually rose to become the Army of the Potomacs greatest corps commander. Though his reputation and legacy gradually faded over time, Hancock was one of the Norths foremost war heroes by the end of the war, and he nearly became president in 1880 when he was just barely defeated by a less decorated Civil War veteran, James Garfield. Nobody in the Army of the Potomac was in the thick of its biggest battles as often as Hancock and the men he commanded. Hancock superbly led his brigade during the Peninsula Campaign, temporarily commanded a division at Antietam in the center of the lines at the Sunken Lane, and his division was the last to withdraw across the river during the Battle of Chancellorsville. After the Battle of Chancellorsville, he fortuitously became the new II Corps commander in the Army of the Potomac, just in time to deliver his greatest performance of all. At Gettysburg, Hancock was the commanding general in the field on Day 1, as Meade and the rest of the Union army arrived later that night. On Day 2, Hancocks men assisted Sickles III Corps when Sickles disobeyed orders and moved it forward, creating a gap in the Union lines. And on Day 3, Hancocks greatest day of the war, he was seriously injured and nearly bled to death while leading his men in their decisive repulse of Picketts Charge. Hancocks injury was excruciatingly painful, but he was back in command for the 1864 Overland Campaign, where his men played crucial roles in the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and the Battle of Cold Harbor. By the end of the Civil War, Hancock was one of the highest regarded generals in the North.Like Confederate corps commander James Longstreet, Hancocks reputation was attacked after the war because of politics. His Northern brethren were critical of his opposition to the execution of Mary Surratt for the Lincoln assassination, they were enraged when he was lenient on the Southern military district he governed during Reconstruction, and the final straw came when he ran as a Democrat in 1880. It would take nearly another century before Hancocks reputation and legacy were revived by Michael Sharaas Killer Angels, a historical fiction about the Battle of Gettysburg that examined the friendship between Hancock and Confederate General Lewis Armistead, who was mortally wounded by Hancocks men during Picketts Charge. By the time Ken Burns Civil War documentary had renwed interest in Gettysburg and the Civil War, Hancock was as popular as ever.Hancock the Superb: The Life and Career of General Winfield Scott Hancock chronicles the life and career of one of the Unions most indispensable generals, humanizing the courageous and fiery man who was respected and admired by his men and his superiors alike. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Winfield Scott Hancock like you never have before, in no time at all.画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 280円

Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies: General Winfield Scott Hancocks Account of Gettysburg and the Pennsylvania Campaign【電子書籍】[ Winfield Scott Hancock ]

Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824 February 9, 1886) was one of the most colorful men in the Union Army during the Civil War, but he was also one of the most capable soldiers. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican-American War, and his Civil War service earned him the nickname "Hancock the Superb." Nowhere was Hancock more superb than at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. One military historian wrote, "No other Union general at Gettysburg dominated men by the sheer force of their presence more completely than Hancock." Another wrote, "... his tactical skill had won him the quick admiration of adversaries who had come to know him as the 'Thunderbolt of the Army of the Potomac'." His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier. Hancock's reputation as a war hero at Gettysburg, combined with his rare status as a prominent figure with impeccable Unionist credentials and pro-states' rights views, made him a quadrennial presidential possibility in the years after the Civil War. His noted integrity was a counterpoint to the corruption of the era, for as President Rutherford B. Hayes said, "... [i]f, when we make up our estimate of a public man, conspicuous both as a soldier and in civil life, we are to think first and chiefly of his manhood, his integrity, his purity, his singleness of purpose, and his unselfish devotion to duty, we can truthfully say of Hancock that he was through and through pure gold." This nationwide popularity led the Democrats to nominate him for President in 1880. Although he ran a strong campaign, Hancock was defeated by Republican James Garfield by the closest popular vote margin in American history. Hancock wrote an official account of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Pennsylvania Campaign months after the battle, where he was injured on Day 3 and nearly bled to death. Hancocks official account eventually became part of The War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. This edition of his account includes pictures of the important commanders of the battle.

Marks of a Movement What the Church Today Can Learn From the Wesleyan Revival【電子書籍】[ Winfield Bevins ]

Marks of a Movement calls us back to the disciple-making mandate of the church through the timeless wisdom of John Wesley and the Methodist movement. With a love for history and a passion for today’s church, Winfield helps us reimagine church multiplication in a way that focuses on making and multiplying disciples for the twenty-first century.

Winfield Bevins reminds us of the vital multiplication lessons from the Wesleyan movement, one of the greatest missional movements the world has ever known. He highlights the necessity of discipleship as the starting point and the abiding strategic practice that is key to all lasting missional impact in and through movements. The Methodist movement is an example of the power of multiplying movements that utilize the strategy of discipleship. Within a generation, one in thirty people who were living in Britain had become Methodists, and the movement soon became a worldwide phenomenon.

We in the Western Church need a movement of historic proportions once again. What would such a multiplication movement look like for us today? We must look to the past to gain wisdom for the future. And as we look at the pages of church history, there is no better example of a multiplication movement in the West than the Methodist movement of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Marks of a Movement highlights the lessons and key insights that enable us to learn from the past and reapply this timeless, biblical wisdom for today.

Kind of...

Cut off by his father for laziness, and desperate for dough, Willie agrees to deliver a single giant, psychedelic mushroom to a mysterious collector, making himself an unwitting target in Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs.

Meanwhile, would-be playwright (and oppressed Catholic) William Shakespeare is eighteen years old and stuck teaching Latin in the boondocks of Stratford-upon-Avon. The future Bard's life is turned upside down when a stranger entrusts him with a sacred relic from Rome... This, at a time when adherents of the "Old Faith" are being hanged, drawn, and quartered as traitors.

Seemingly separated in time and place, the lives of Willie and William begin to intersect in curious ways, from harrowing encounters with the law (and a few ex-girlfriends) to dubious experiments with mind-altering substances. Their misadventures could be dismissed as youthful folly. Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies: Union Generals Accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg【電子書籍】[ George G. Meade, Winfield Scott Hancock, Henry Hunt & George Custer ]

Without question, the most famous battle of the Civil War took place outside of the small town of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863. Over those three days, nearly 8,000 would die, over 30,000 would be casualties, and the most famous attack of the war, Picketts Charge, would fail Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia. The South would go on to lose the war, and when it did, the importance of Gettysburg as one of the high tide marks of the Confederacy became apparent, making the battle all the more important. Former Confederate comrades like James Longstreet and Jubal Early would go on to argue who was responsible for the loss at Gettysburg in the following decades. Before the memoirs, however, came the Official Records, the true primary accounts of the battle by the important generals who directed and fought in it. This collection of 10 Union accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg and Pennsylvania campaign include the accounts of commander George Meade, artillery chief Henry Hunt, Winfield Scott Hancock the Superb, John Buford, Joshua Chamberlain, and more. It is specially formatted with a Table of Contents for each generals account.

Enjoy the ongoing saga of Jason and Kathryn Tarrington. From awakening passion in Beyond All Reason, to a desperate struggle for survival in Beyond All Odds, to the search for a new life beckoning from the unknowable wilderness Beyond the Horizon.

Charleston, SC early 1782. Although Lord Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown, British troops remained in both Charleston and Savannah. American General Nathanael Greene lingered nearby, refusing to leave until a valid signed peace treaty was presented. Just arrived from England, Kathryn and Jason encounter an atmosphere rife with tension. Although the war may have been declared over, the reality is quite different. To a proud city, still struggling to forget past humiliation suffered under his Lordship, ongoing British presence is a painful reminder; neither have they forgiven Colonel Jason Tarrington and his wife. The Tarringtons must not be recognized, for they have a difficult mission to accomplish: rescue Kathryns nephew, a former rebel militia officer. Held for several months by British contingencies, and as equally well-known as they, his rescue will be extremely dangerous. Once accomplished, they intend to put the war behind them and begin a new life with their family. But neither side will react well to Gabriels rescue or the fact that the notorious Tarringtons still live. For now, Charleston holds only danger. Where can they safely start over? The tentative answer appears to lie in the wilderness Beyond the Horizon. For in the vast, pristine forests of the Carolinas, incredible possibilities exist for the taking. Danger constantly lurks and ones life is often in peril at the hands of devious strangers, former dragoon comrades, even family. An unexpected opportunity will present itself, one that renews old acquaintances and introduces new ones. In this emotional blockbuster there will be shared joys and sorrows as life moves on and an ending you will never forget.

Liturgical Mission The Work of the People for the Life of the World【電子書籍】[ Winfield Bevins ]

Modern missional movements have often viewed the historic Christian traditions with suspicion. The old traditions may be beautiful, the thinking goes, but they're too insular, focused primarily on worship and on the interior life of the church, and not looking outward to evangelism and good works.

In Liturgical Mission, Winfield Bevins argues that the church's liturgy and sacramental life are in fact deeply missional. He explores the historic practices of the Christian church, demonstrating how they offer a holistic framework for everyday Christian discipleship and mission in the twenty-first century. The result is a book that not only invites all Christians back to the historic liturgy of the church, but also invites those already in liturgical churches to rediscover the missional life that has too often remained latent in their own traditions.

a dirty hand The Literary Notebooks of Winfield Townley Scott【電子書籍】[ Winfield Townley Scott ]

From "a dirty hand": Words are very powerful. You aren't sure of that? Think of all the things you won't say. Wonderful remark in a note I had this week from William Carlos Williams. He spoke of the "disease" of wanting to write poetry; said he had been "off" poetry for many months andーhe saidー"I feel clean and unhappy." One reason for keeping this kind of notebook: you can put on record the retort you couldn't think of at last night's party. Photographs of Henry James in his middle years should be commented upon. Gone is the shy aesthete of the youthful portrait (by LaFarge?) . This bearded man has a fierce look, even a bestial one. Here is perhaps-I don't know-James at his most generative. Again this man disappears in the shaven, bald, final James, the famous Jamesーthe Grand Lama. I noticed when Lindsay (thirteen) read aloud a passage from a hunting book the other day he pronounced "genital" as "genteel." I'd love to see a literary history titled "The Genital Tradition." Contrast "business ethics" and the ethics of art. Nobody writes a poem hoping it will wear out in four or five years. Between 1951 and 1966 the distinguished American poet Winfield Townley Scott kept a series of notebooks in which he set down his thoughts on poetry, literature, the literary scene, and life in general. Shortly before his untimely death in 1968 he made a selection of the entries he thought were best and gave it the title "a dirty hand." These perceptive notes, some tart, some gentle, some boisterous, some wistful, give us a remarkable insight into the workings of his creative mind. George P. Elliott has said of Scott: "In a very solid way, I think he was as rock-bottom American a poet as we have had since Frost." The introduction is by Scott's good friend Merle Armitage, who also designed the original edition of this book.

Ambrose Burnside was commander of the Army of the Potomac in December 1862, during which he commanded the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg. After having trouble crossing the Rappahannock to reach the city, his army attacked strongly fortified positions on Maryes Heights piecemeal, leading to high casualty rates without coming close to dislodging the Confederates. After the defeat, Burnside retreated back across the river. The Biology, Physiology and Sociology of Reproduction【電子書籍】[ Winfield S. Hall ]

REPRODUCTION FROM THE STANDPOINT OF BIOLOGY

I. GENERAL ACTIVITIES OF LIVING ORGANISMS.

The casual observer, even if he watches thoughtfully the various activities of plants and animals, would hardly believe these activities capable of classification into two general classes. He notes the germination of the plant seed and its early growth, step by step approaching a stage of maturity; it blossoms, produces seed, and if it is an annual plant, withers and dies. If it is a perennial plant its leaves only, wither and die at the approach of winter, the plant passing into a resting stage from which it awakes the following spring to repeat again its annual cycle.

If he observes an animal he finds that it similarly develops to a stage of maturity, reproduces its kind, withers and dies; but incident to these general activities he notes numerous others that seem to have no relation to the activity of the plant. He sees men tilling the fields, felling the forests, building houses, factories and railroads; he sees them build hospitals, colleges and churches. Is it possible to group all of these activities of plants and animals into two general groups? A more critical view of these activities makes it evident that they are all directed either to the maintenance and protection of the individual, or the maintenance and protection of the race. Those directed towards the maintenance of self are called egoistic activities, while those directed to the maintenance of the race are called phyletic activities.

The Egoistic Activities.

The term egoistic implies that the effort is directed towards the ego or self, and includes all of those activities directed to the support, protection, defense and development of oneself. As illustrated in the plant organism, the taking of nourishment from the air and soil, the development of the stem, branches, roots and leaves, are egoistic activities. In the animalーwe may take, for example, manーthe egoistic activities begin with the drawing of nourishment from the mother's breast and include all those activities of early childhood usually called play, the real significance of which is to develop the neuro-muscular system and the special senses, to that condition of alertness and strength that will make the growing individual self-supporting. A very large part of the activities of the self-supporting human subject are directed towards the earning of his daily bread, and of clothing and shelter. The activities of the school and college period, devoted, as they are, almost exclusively to the development of the youth's powers, intellectual or physical, are also egoistic. Even the pursuit of pleasure and of sense gratification on the part of the individual belongs to this same group of activities.

The Phyletic Activities.

As the etymology of the term suggests, these activities are devoted to the propagation, maintenance and protection of the race.

a. Reproduction.ーThe most fundamental one of the activities for the maintenance of the race is reproduction. Every living organism, whether plant or animal, possesses the power to reproduce its kind. Some plants produce spores and some produce seeds. Reference was made above to the production of the flower in plants. The flower represents the reproductive organ of the plant, and the real object of the flower is to produce the seed. Animals produce eggs from which the young develop, either through a process of incubation outside of a maternal body or an analogous process within the maternal body. In the latter case the young are brought forth as living organisms.

b. Support and Protection of Offspring.ーWhether we consider the plant seed, or the animal egg or newbornーin any case the parental organism must provide for the support and protection of the offspring during those stages of development when it is unable to support and protect itself.

Operations of - and Challenges to - the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) During the U.S. - Mexican War, 1846-1848: Field Operations of Major Generals Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This excellent report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. Throughout its history, the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) has faced unique challenges not shared by other organizations within the Army. The origins of many of today's organizational structures and operations are rooted in experiences in the mid-19th century, specifically the US-Mexican and American Civil Wars. The purpose of this study is to explore the organizational structure of the AMEDD before, during, and after the US-Mexican War and the operational challenges faced with supply, battlefield medicine, and patient care during the conflict, and post-war after care. This study draws on a variety of sources including memoirs, personal journals, journal articles, field reports, official correspondences, congressional papers, army regulations, and compiled histories of the Army Medial Department. The field operations of Major Generals Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor are used as case studies. This study will ultimately show that while the AMEDD made great strides towards improving its position within the regular army and improving its operational procedures, the AMEDD missed many opportunities to improve before the American Civil War.

On 13 May 1846, President James Knox Polk issued a proclamation officially entering into a war with Mexico, although military operations on the Rio Grande had already commenced. At the time of the U.S.-Mexican War, the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) was still in its infancy. Despite the necessity for medical providers in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812, a permanent medical department was not established until an act of Congress passed on 14 April 1818. From 1836 to 1861, Dr. Thomas Lawson served as the second Surgeon General of the army. The Second Seminole War in Florida was his preeminent concern during his first decade, and the war with Mexico occupied only two years of his twenty-five year tenure. However, the operational and organizational obstacles faced remained his primary concerns until the end of his term on the eve of the American Civil War as he struggled to move the AMEDD from a preprofessional to professional organization. This paper seeks to explore the organizational structure of the AMEDD prior to, during, and after the war; its place within the larger army; and operational challenges in the fields of supply, battlefield medicine, personnel, and after-care of soldiers. Before the outbreak of the conflict, the AMEDD was geared primarily towards peacetime and garrison operationsー policies and procedures for battlefield medical care was not yet established. As an organization, it had difficulty transitioning to wartime operations and still largely operated as if it were in garrison. The military campaigns of Generals Taylor and Scott serve as case studies for the AMEDD's handling of its wartime responsibilities.
From the founding of the United States Army, there has always been a medical presence. Physicians and doctors have served units in garrison and in the field on short-term expeditions and during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. However, except in times of emergency or crisis and before the creation of AMEDD, there was no consistent leader or a specific medical department. The first man to lead the Army's medical personnel was Benjamin Church.

Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies: Union Generals Accounts of Antietam【電子書籍】[ George B. McClellan, George G. Meade, Winfield Scott Hancock & Ambrose Burnside ]

The bloodiest day in the history of the United States took place on the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. On September 17, 1862, Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia fought George McClellans Army of the Potomac outside Sharpsburg along Antietam Creek. That day, nearly 25,000 would become casualties, and Lees army barely survived fighting the much bigger Northern army. Although the battle was tactically a draw, it resulted in forcing Lees army out of Maryland and back into Virginia, making it a strategic victory for the North and an opportune time for President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the rebellious states. For those reasons, Antietam is one of the major turning points of the Civil War. Before all of the generals relived Antietam in their memoirs, they wrote official accounts of the battle and the Maryland Campaign to their superiors, and these accounts were preserved in the Official Records. This collection of Union generals accounts of the Battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign include the accounts of Commander George B. McClellan, Corps commander Ambrose Burnside, and other generals including George Meade, Fitz John Porter and Winfield Scott Hancock. It is specially formatted with a Table of Contents for each generals account, and pictures of the generals who fought in it.

Relates one of the most remarkable lives in the tumultuous English Reformation

Thomas Cranmer (1489?1556) was the first Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, the author of the Book of Common Prayer, and a central figure in the English Protestant Reformation. Few theologians have led such an eventful life: Cranmer helped Henry VIII break with the pope, pressed his vision of the Reformation through the reign of Edward VI, was forced to recant under Queen Mary, and then dramatically withdrew his recantations before being burned alive.

This lively biography by Leslie Williams narrates Cranmer's life from the beginning, through his education and history with the monarchy, to his ecclesiastical trials and eventual martyrdom. Williams portrays Cranmer's ongoing struggle to reconcile his two central loyaltiesーallegiance to the crown and fidelity to the Reformation faithーas she tells his fascinating life story.
