The Companions of Jehu & The Whites and the Blues The Sainte-Hermine Novels【電子書籍】[ Alexandre Dumas ]
|

The two lesser-known novels of Duma introduce a reader into the advantageous Napoleonic world, full of courtesy and noble heroes, tragic love stories, duels, political intrigues, and people ready to defend their ideas at the cost of their lives. "The Companions of Jehu" sends us to the early days of the Napoleonic era, as Napoleon himself only started his stellar political career as a First Consul. The story tells about the opposition between the adherents of royalty and Napoleon supporters. Yet, a reader can't find a clear villain on any side. Both the royalists and their political foes display honor and nobility, and neither side makes the reader less sympathetic. After "The Companions of Jehu," Dumas wrote "The Whites and the Blues," which he called the most strictly historical of his works. Although it was created later, it is actually a prequel to "The Companions of Jehu." The book covers the turbulent times following the French Revolution, before the Napoleon era. In those times, belonging to the wrong political party could cost a life. It tells us about young people dragged into the political turmoil, where they were forced to fight for their lives and ideals. Interestingly, one of the characters was inspired by Dumas' friend Charles Nodier. The ones who read and Loved "The Companions of Jehu" will be surprised to meet their favorite heroes a couple of years younger, when their views were just shaped, and their fates outlined.

|

Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins' 'Life Among the Piutes: The First Autobiography of a Native American Woman' is a powerful narrative that provides a firsthand account of the experiences of the Northern Paiute tribe in the 19th century. Through engaging prose, Hopkins sheds light on the struggles and injustices faced by her people, offering a unique perspective on the impact of European colonization on Native American communities. The book is not only a valuable historical document but also a significant piece of Native American literature, showcasing resilience and cultural preservation in the face of adversity. Hopkins' writing style is both compelling and poignant, leaving a lasting impression on readers who seek to understand the complexities of Native American history and identity. As a member of the Paiute tribe and an advocate for Native American rights, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins was deeply committed to recording her people's history and confronting the misconceptions perpetuated by Euro-American settlers. Her personal experiences as a Native American woman navigating the challenges of assimilation and displacement provide a unique insight into the intersections of gender, race, and culture in 19th-century America. Hopkins' dedication to preserving her heritage and amplifying Indigenous voices through her writing makes 'Life Among the Piutes' a testament to her enduring legacy as a trailblazing Native American author. I highly recommend 'Life Among the Piutes' to readers interested in Native American history, women's literature, and the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities. Hopkins' poignant autobiography offers a powerful firsthand account of the resilience and cultural richness of the Paiute tribe, making it essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Native American experiences.

There Is Hope for Blacks & Whites【電子書籍】[ Rev. Douglas Ahamefula ]
|

There Is Hope for Blacks & Whites

By: Rev. Douglas Ahamefula

After the killing of a black man, George Floyd, by a white police officer, author Rev. Douglas Ahamefula was spurred to write There Is Hope for Blacks & Whites. Many people across the world believed his killing was racially motivated. People watched the video, saw how the police officer had his knees on the neck of the black man who was screaming and saying “I cannot breathe” till he died.

This event led to numerous protests and demonstrations all over the world. In many cities where the protests and demonstrations were held, the number of the white people who were protesting outnumbered the black protesters. The new generation of white youth came out in record number to protest.

This is a turning point in the history. With this turn of events, Ahamefula can now visualize a future society where discrimination and social injustice would become a thing of the past. Now that the blacks and whites have agreed on the same issue and are asking for social justice for all, irrespective of the color of your skin, then There is Hope for Blacks and Whites.

About the Author

Rev. Douglas Ahamefula is an ordained minister of the American Assembly of God Mission. He is also an architect by profession. He studied at the University of Florence in Italy at the department of architecture where he graduated in 1998 before migrating to the United States of America. Ahamefula is an African American and hails from Nigeria. He speaks four languages: English, Italian, and two other African languages.

He believes that all human race, blacks, white, and brown, originated from one source who is God. For this reason, as one of the leaders of his church, which was predominantly white, he worked hard with other leaders of his church, to make it now multicultural and international with people from about thirty-six nations in the Victory Church where he serves as a prayer minister.

His faith in God has enabled him to see light in the midst of darkness, laughter in the midst of sadness, and Hope in the midst of Hopelessness.

The Whites Are Enemies of Heaven Climate Caucasianism and Asian Ecological Protection【電子書籍】[ Mark W. Driscoll ]
|

In The Whites Are Enemies of Heaven Mark W. Driscoll examines nineteenth-century Western imperialism in Asia and the devastating effects of "climate caucasianism"ーthe white West's pursuit of rapacious extraction at the expense of natural environments and people of color conflated with them. Drawing on an array of primary sources in Chinese, Japanese, and French, Driscoll reframes the Opium Wars as "wars for drugs" and demonstrates that these wars to unleash narco- and human traffickers kickstarted the most important event of the Anthropocene: the military substitution of Qing China's world-leading carbon-neutral economy for an unsustainable Anglo-American capitalism powered by coal. Driscoll also reveals how subaltern actors, including outlaw societies and dispossessed samurai groups, became ecological protectors, defending their locales while driving decolonization in Japan and overthrowing a millennia of dynastic rule in China. Driscoll contends that the methods of these protectors resonate with contemporary Indigenous-led movements for environmental justice.

Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society Social Histories of Accommodation【電子書籍】[ Neil Roos ]
|

How were whites implicated in and shaped by apartheid culture and society, and how did they contribute to it?

In Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society, historian Neil Roos traces the lives of ordinary white people in South Africa during the apartheid years, beginning in 1948 when the National Party swept into power on the back of its catchall apartheid slogan. Drawing on his own family's story and others, Roos explores how working-class whites frequently defied particular aspects of the apartheid state but seldom opposed or even acknowledged the idea of racial supremacy, which lay at the heart of the apartheid society. This cognitive dissonance afforded them a way to simultaneously accommodate and oppose apartheid and allowed them to later claim they never supported the apartheid system.

Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society offers a telling reminder that the politics and practice of race, in this case apartheid-era whiteness, derive not only from the top, but also from the bottom.

Guilt, shame, and suspicion swirl as a small community in upstate New York turns on itself in this moody, propulsive thriller, from the award-winning writer of In West Mills

The year is 1982 and the people of Fervent-on-Hudson have begun to move on from a local double homicide that upended the once-quiet town. But when their former neighbors, James and Ella White, are proven innocent of the murders, released from prison, and sent back to Fervent, some people have cause for concern.

Sylvia Upshaw and her best friend, Lafayette “Fate” Jolly, are uneasy about the Whites’ return. While the Whites were incarcerated, Sylvia revealed an explosive secret to the Whites’ adopted son, Morgan, and during their trial, Fate's testimony hindered their case. James and Ella won't let the betrayal go unpunished. Sylvia and Fate quickly become victims of harassment from the Whites, and when another murder is committed on Fervent, the town is left to fend for themselves.

Intimate and chilling, The Fervent Whites examines how small communities with long-simmering tensions can be pushed to the limits of civility.

Blinded by the Whites Why Race Still Matters in 21st-Century America【電子書籍】[ David H. Ikard ]
|

The election of Barack Obama gave political currency to the (white) idea that Americans now live in a post-racial society. But the persistence of racial profiling, economic inequality between blacks and whites, disproportionate numbers of black prisoners, and disparities in health and access to healthcare suggest there is more to the story. David H. Ikard addresses these issues in an effort to give voice to the challenges faced by most African Americans and to make legible the shifting discourse of white supremacist ideologyーincluding post-racialism and colorblind politicsーthat frustrates black self-determination, agency, and empowerment in the 21st century. Ikard tackles these concerns from various perspectives, chief among them black feminism. He argues that all oppressions (of race, gender, class, sexual orientation) intersect and must be confronted to upset the status quo.

Poor but Proud Alabama's Poor Whites【電子書籍】[ Wayne Flynt ]
|

First published in 1989 by The University of Alabama Press, Poor but Proud was met with critical acclaim and awarded the 1990 Lillian Smith prize in nonfiction, as well as being named a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book. This new paperback version will make the classic work available for general readers, bookstores, and classrooms.

Wayne Flynt addresses the life experiences of poor whites through their occupations, society, and culture. He explores their family structure, music, religion, folklore, crafts, and politics and describes their attempts to resolve their own problems through labor unions and political movements. He reveals that many of our stereotypes about poor whites are wildly exaggerated; few were derelicts or "white trash." Even though racism, emotionalism, and a penchant for violence were possible among poor whites, most bore their troubles with dignity and self-respect - working hard to eventually lift themselves out of poverty.

The phrase "poor but proud" aptly describes many white Alabamians who settled the state and persisted through time. During the antebellum years, poor whites developed a distinctive culture on the periphery of the cotton belt. As herdsmen, subsistence farmers, mill workers, and miners, they flourished in a society more renowned for its two-class division of planters and slaves. The New Deal era and the advent of World War II broke the long downward spiral of poverty and afforded new opportunities for upward mobility.

Colonizing the Past Mythmaking and Pre-Columbian Whites in Nineteenth-Century American Writing【電子書籍】[ Edward Watts ]
|

After the Revolution, Americans realized they lacked the common, deep, or meaningful history that might bind together their loose confederation of former colonies into a genuine nation. They had been conquerors yet colonials, now politically independent yet culturally subordinate to European history and traditions. To resolve these paradoxes, some early republic "historians" went so far as to reconstruct pre-Columbian, transatlantic adventures by white people that might be employed to assert their rights and ennoble their identities as Americans.

In Colonizing the Past, Edward Watts labels this impulse "primordialism" and reveals its consistent presence over the span of nineteenth-century American print culture. In dozens of texts, Watts tracks episodes in which varying accounts of pre-Columbian whites attracted widespread attention: the Welsh Indians, the Lost Tribes of Israel, the white Mound Builders, and the Vikings, as well as two ancient Irish interventions. In each instance, public interest was ignited when representations of the group in question became enmeshed in concurrent conversations about the nation’s evolving identity and policies. Yet at every turn, counternarratives and public resistance challenged both the plausibility of the pre-Columbian whites and the colonialist symbolism that had been evoked to create a sense of American identity. By challenging the rhetoric of primordialism and empire building, dissenting writers from Washington Irving to Mark Twain exposed the crimes of conquest and white Americans’ marginality as ex-colonials.

Neighborhood Sharks Hunting with the Great Whites of California's Farallon Islands【電子書籍】[ Katherine Roy ]
|

Up close with the ocean's most fearsome and famous predator and the scientists who study themーjust twenty-six miles from the Golden Gate Bridge!

A few miles from San Francisco lives a population of the ocean's largest and most famous predators. Each fall, while the city's inhabitants dine on steaks, salads, and sandwiches, the great white sharks return to California's Farallon Islands to dine on their favorite meal: the seals that live on the island's rocky coasts. Massive, fast, and perfectly adapted to hunting after 11 million years of evolution, the great whites are among the planet's most fearsome, fascinating, and least understood animals.

In the fall of 2012, Katherine Roy visited the Farallons with the scientists who study the islands' shark population. She witnessed seal attacks, observed sharks being tagged in the wild, and got an up close look at the dramatic Farallonsーa wildlife refuge that is strictly off-limits to all but the scientists who work there. Neighborhood Sharks is an intimate portrait of the life cycle, biology, and habitat of the great white shark, based on the latest research and an up-close visit with these amazing animals.

The Strike That Changed New York Blacks, Whites and the Ocean Hill-Brownsville Crisis【電子書籍】[ Jerald E. Podair ]

"[This] admirably balanced book will most likely stand as the definitive account of the Ocean Hill-Brownsville crisis for some time . . . engrossing." ー New York History

Winner of the Allan Nevins Prize awarded by the Society of American Historians

On May 9, 1968, junior high school teacher Fred Nauman received a letter that would change the history of New York City. It informed him that he had been fired from his job. Eighteen other educators in the Ocean Hill?Brownsville area of Brooklyn received similar letters that day. The dismissed educators were white. The local school board that fired them was predominantly African-American. The crisis that the firings provoked became the most racially divisive moment in the city in more than a century, sparking three teachers' strikes and increasingly angry confrontations between black and white New Yorkers at bargaining tables, on picket lines, and in the streets.

This superb book revisits the Ocean Hill?Brownsville crisisーa watershed in modern New York City race relations. Jerald E. Podair connects the conflict with the sociocultural history of the city and explores its legacy. The book is a powerful, sobering tale of racial misunderstanding and fear, and a New York story with national implications.

"Deftly weaves a complicated story about class and race, labor and civil rights…There are no faultless heroes or thoroughly evil villains hereーonly human beings struggling to make sense of their world and achieve justice as they understand it." ー Choice

"Compelling." ー Washington Monthly

“Will you boys be quiet?” shouted Sir James, and Mark clapped his hand over his cousin’s lips, receiving a similar compliment from Dean in return, while Sir James threw himself back in his chair, frowned severely as he stared straight out of the wide open window, and then twitched himself about, changing his position again and again as if his seat were not comfortable. A strange silence had fallen on the group, and it was as if three of the four individuals present were suffering from a desire to turn a questioning look upon their companions, but dared not for fear of interrupting Sir James in the deep thoughts which were evidently playing about in his brain and filling his frank, florid, John-Bull-like countenance with wrinkles. During the space of perhaps two minutes the silence deepened, till all at once from somewhere in the stableyard there was a loud, whack, whack, whack, whack as of wings beating together, and then sharp and clear, defiant and victorious, as if a battle had been wonーCock-a-doodle-do! “Hah!” ejaculated Sir James, starting upright in his chair, as if awakened out of a dream, and turning towards the doctor as if to speak, but only to check himself again. “Oh, absurd!” he quite shouted. “No, no, no, no; impossible; impossible! It could not be. No, no, doctor. You set me thinking and asking myself questions about why not, and all that sort of rubbish. Why, sir, for the first time since our acquaintance began, you have been playing the tempter, and nearly won, what with your litters and palanquins and ponies. No, sir; it’s impossible.” “I say, Mark,” said Dean, in a loud whisper, “didn’t uncle once say that there was hardly such a word as impossible for a man or boy with a will?”

A powerful collection of short stories that shines a light on a tumultuous time in America's history that forever changed our nation.

A freshly made Marine Corps officer, with his new bride in tow, visits his family one last time before shipping out to Vietnam. A group of lost souls living in a seedy Las Vegas hot-sheet motel find solace in each other, only to be devastated when one of them is unable to escape his demons. A teenager tries to convince his mother that his Amerasian girlfriend is worthy of the American Dream. A boxer returns from the war and takes a desperate fight to try to make a name for himself and enough money to look for his daughter. A brother left behind seeks his own random, brutal revenge.

They are some of the characters of Dress Whites, a debut short-story collection by John Phillips, whose powerful fiction has been described as both "muscular" and "sensitive."

They are the stories of people who have been left behind in the years during and after the Vietnam War. Whether they served or remained at home, they are haunted years later by the far-off war that many of them still struggle to recover from today.
