The Wachuga Project【電子書籍】[ Douglas E. Wolfert ]

Jeremy Barnard appears to be a normal kid. He's good looking, well-mannered, from an affluent family, has even earned valedictorian of his class. A perfect recipe for success. Then why is his life one, big, epic fail? Because every time he tries to speak, a complete and utter mess comes out. School life is hell, with Jeremy's Neanderthal peers mocking him at every turn. To make matters worse, his father affords him little relief at home. Francis cringes with disgust every time his son 'st..st..stutters', cursing the powers above for burdening him with such a defective little boy.

Jeremy longs for a normal life. He'd give anything for the ability to socialize at a party, or tell his high school crush, Samantha, that she's beautiful... give everything to earn his father's respect and no longer be a laughing stock. But is Jeremy willing to give his soul?

Little does Jeremy know, his salvation lies in Calvin Ortiz, a hot-headed, maniacal thug who stumbles upon something extraordinary while hiking with his brother in the jungles of Costa Rica - a plant... a beautiful, vibrant green plant teeming with delicate, fuzzy flowers that look good enough to eat. And that's exactly what Calvin does. His knees buckle from the God-like metamorphosis that overtakes him. This is better than any drug he's ever tried, and Calvin's gold tooth glints in the sun as visions of dollar signs dance in his head. But this stuff's too good to sling on his local street corner. Nah, the black market won't do. The Wachuga, as he names it, deserves more respect than that. In a moment of stoned clarity, Calvin contacts the one person he knows with enough connections to turn his discovery into some serious bank.

And with that one phone call, The Wachuga Project is born, and Jeremy's life, for good or ill, will never be the same. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for...

Unforgettable The Bold Flavors of Paula Wolfert's Renegade Life【電子書籍】[ Emily Kaiser Thelin ]

This biographical cookbook tells the story of culinary legend and author of nine award-winning cookbooks, Paula Wolfert, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2013, and shares more than fifty of her most iconic dishes as it explores the relationship between food and memory.

The gripping narrative traces the arc of Wolfert's career, from her Brooklyn childhood to her adventures in the farthest corners of the Mediterranean: from nights spent with Beat Generation icons like Allen Ginsberg, to working with the great James Beard; from living in Morocco at a time when it really was like a fourteenth century culture, to bringing international food to America's kitchens through magazines and cookbooks.

Anecdotes and adventuresome stories come from Paula's extensive personal archive, interviews with Paula herself, and dozens of interviews with food writers and chefs whom she influenced and influenced her-including Alice Waters,Thomas Keller, Diana Kennedy, Andr? Daguin, and Jacques Pepin.
Wolfert's recipes are like no other: each is a new discovery, yielding incredible flavors, using unusual techniques and ingredients, often with an incredible backstory. And the recipes are organized into menus inspired by Wolfert's life and travels--such as James Beard's Easy Entertaining menu; a Moroccan Party; and a Slow and Easy Feast.

Unforgettable also addresses Wolfert's acknowledgement of the challenges of living with Alzheimer's, a disease that often means she cannot remember the things she did yesterday, but can still recall in detail what she has cooked over the years. Not accepting defeat easily, Wolfert created a new brain-centric diet, emphasizing healthy meats and fresh vegetables, and her recipes are included here.

Unforgettable is a delight for those who know and love Paula Wolfert's recipes, but will be a delicious discovery for those who love food, but have not yet heard of this influential cookbook writer and culinary legend.

Wolfert's Roost and Miscellanies【電子書籍】[ Washington Irving ]

Sir: I have observed that as a man advances in life, he is subject to a kind of plethora of the mind, doubtless occasioned by the vast accumulation of wisdom and experience upon the brain. Hence he is apt to become narrative and admonitory, that is to say, fond of telling long stories, and of doling out advice, to the small profit and great annoyance of his friends. As I have a great horror of becoming the oracle, or, more technically speaking, the "bore," of the domestic circle, and would much rather bestow my wisdom and tediousness upon the world at large, I have always sought to ease off this surcharge of the intellect by means of my pen, and hence have inflicted divers gossiping volumes upon the patience of the public. I am tired, however, of writing volumes; they do not afford exactly the relief I require; there is too much preparation, arrangement, and parade, in this set form of coming before the public. I am growing too indolent and unambitious for any thing that requires labor or display. I have thought, therefore, of securing to myself a snug corner in some periodical work where I might, as it were, loll at my ease in my elbow-chair, and chat sociably with the public, as with an old friend, on any chance subject that might pop into my brain. In looking around, for this purpose, upon the various excellent periodicals with which our country abounds, my eye was struck by the title of your workー"THE KNICKERBOCKER." My heart leaped at the sight. DIEDRICH KNICKERBOCKER, Sir, was one of my earliest and most valued friends, and the recollection of him is associated with some of the pleasantest scenes of my youthful days. To explain this, and to show how I came into possession of sundry of his posthumous works, which I have from time to time given to the world, permit me to relate a few particulars of our early intercourse. I give them with the more confidence, as I know the interest you take in that departed worthy, whose name and effigy are stamped upon your title-page, and as they will be found important to the better understanding and relishing divers communications I may have to make to you. My first acquaintance with that great and good man, for such I may venture to call him, now that the lapse of some thirty years has shrouded his name with venerable antiquity, and the popular voice has elevated him to the rank of the classic historians of yore, my first acquaintance with him was formed on the banks of the Hudson, not far from the wizard region of Sleepy Hollow. He had come there in the course of his researches among the Dutch neighborhoods for materials for his immortal history. For this purpose, he was ransacking the archives of one of the most ancient and historical mansions in the country. It was a lowly edifice, built in the time of the Dutch dynasty, and stood on a green bank, overshadowed by trees, from which it peeped forth upon the Great Tappan Zee, so famous among early Dutch navigators. A bright pure spring welled up at the foot of the green bank; a wild brook came babbling down a neighboring ravine, and threw itself into a little woody cove, in front of the mansion. It was indeed as quiet and sheltered a nook as the heart of man could require, in which to take refuge from the cares and troubles of the world; and as such, it had been chosen in old times, by Wolfert Acker, one of the privy councillors of the renowned Peter Stuyvesant

The Story Of Swede Larsen's Bomber Squadron [Illustrated Edition]【電子書籍】[ Ira Wolfert ]

Includes the Island War In The Pacific Illustration Pack ? 152 maps, plans and photos.
The epic story of the death and rebirth of the famous Torpedo Squadron 8, destroyed at the Battle of Midway and rose again to become a crack outfit under the leadership of "Swede" Larsen.
"THE JAPS WIPED OUT THE UNITED STATES NAVY Torpedo Squadron 8 in a few minutes at the Battle of Midway. The minutes were hot and rough. The squadron was like a raw egg thrown into an electric fan, and only three men came out of the action alive. One of these is no longer fit for combat duty. His nerves are gone. They became unstrung in those few minutes, and in the ten months since then he has not been able to get them working again normally, although he has been out on the line trying his best, refusing painfully to give up.
So, when Torpedo 8 was wiped out on Thursday morning, June 4, 1942, in about the time it takes to stamp out a pile of ants, it looked to those of us on the outside as if torpedo bombing were about to become a lost art.
But the Navy did not agree. Nor did Torpedo 8 agree. The Navy seemed to know without asking that Torpedo 8 would not feel this way, for, without being asked, Torpedo 8 was thrown directly from Midway into the Battle for the Solomons ー a series of engagements into which the Japs put about five times the naval strength they used at Midway, and much more naval strength than they used against the Malay Peninsula and Java.
Torpedo 8 went into the battle with two veterans of Midway, plus remnants of the old squadron who had not got into the action there, and plus 'replacements,' as they are called. They did not, as the Japs do, blame their dead for having died. They wanted revenge for them. Up to Midway, the slogan of the squadron had been 'Attack.' On June 12, eight days after the holocaust at Midway, the squadron commander in an official squadron memorandum changed the slogan to: 'Attackー and Vengeance!'"-Introduction

Includes the Island War In The Pacific Illustration Pack ? 152 maps, plans and photos.
Pulitzer Prize winning author Ira Wolfert provides a gripping eye-witness account of one of the pivotal campaigns of the Second World War.
The campaign to liberate the Solomon islands from Japanese domination, which had crept sloe to cutting off Australia and New Zealand, was hugely important in regaining the initiative for the Allies in the Pacific. The action in this account is centered around the legendary fighting on Guadalcanal, in the air, on the sea and on the land. The author toured the area recording the thoughts, feelings and anecdotes of the American Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen who fought this brutal but successful campaign. Weaving all of these parts into a narrative of vivid clarity he captured the spirit of the "Greatest Generation" as they faced their most implacable enemy, the forces of Imperial Japan.

In "Wolfert's Roost, and Miscellanies," Washington Irving revisits the landscapes of his youth, particularly the tranquil settings of the Hudson River Valley. This collection embodies a rich tapestry of narratives, blending essays, sketches, and tales that reflect Irving's penchant for nostalgia and his keen observation of American life in the early 19th century. The literary style is marked by its lyrical prose and whimsical storytelling, anchored in a Romantic sensibility that celebrates nature, history, and the complexities of human experience. Through both humor and sentiment, Irving crafts a unique literary context that mirrors the shifting dynamics of a young nation exploring its identity. Washington Irving, often hailed as the father of American literature, was deeply influenced by his surroundings and experiences. Born in 1783, he traveled extensively in Europe and upon his return, aimed to capture the essence of American culture. Irving's mastery of imaginative storytelling was shaped by his formative years in New York, as well as his fascination with folklore, which he incorporated into his writing. "Wolfert's Roost" showcases his ability to weave personal reflections with broader societal commentary, further solidifying his position as a pivotal figure in American letters. This collection is a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of American literature and the cultural context of the early 19th century. Irving's elegant prose and insightful observations provide a window into both the past and the emerging American psyche. Readers will find a delightful mix of humor, introspection, and nostalgia that resonates beyond its time, making it an essential addition to both academic study and personal libraries.

Several papers were written by Irving in 1839 and the following year, for the " Knickerbocker," a monthly periodical conducted by his friend, Lewis Gaylord Clark, all of them such as he only could write. They were afterward collected into a volume, entitled " Wolfert'sRoost," from the ancient name of that beautiful residence of his on the banks of the Hudson, in which they were mostly written. They were, perhaps, read with more interest in the volume than in the magazine, just as some paintings of the highest merit are seen with more pleasure in the artist's room than on the walls of an exhibition.
