Manipulation and Characterization of Electrosprayed Ions Under Ambient Conditions Methods and Instrumentation【電子書籍】[ Zane Baird ]

This thesis addresses the evolving field of measurement science, specifically that of mass spectrometry (MS) and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) based techniques. It focuses on the design, construction and implementation of low-cost, easy-to-manufacture measurement tools that are used in modern settings such as airport security screening.

Advances in these technologies often involve minimal performance enhancement at ever-increasing cost, which in turn limits accessibility to versatile measurement tools. This problem is addressed using desktop 3D printers along with widely available materials for the production of novel ion lenses and an IMS instrument with a performance comparable to that of many commercial systems.

Baird´s findings are a source of inspiration for scientists exploring this emerging field.

The Midnight Promise A Detective's Story in Ten Cases【電子書籍】[ Zane Lovitt ]
|

A brilliant Melbourne crime novel, told in ten hardboiled stories.

Winner, Ned Kelly Awards, Best First Fiction, 2013.

John Dorn is a private investigator. Just like his father used to be. It says 'private inquiry agent' in John's yellow pages ad because that's what his old man called himself, back before his business folded, his wife left him and he drank himself to death.

But John's not going to end up like his father. He doesn't have a wife, or much business. He doesn't really drink, either. Not yet.

In each of these ten delicious stories Zane Lovitt presents an intriguing investigation filled with humour and complex, beautifully observed characters. At their centre is John Dorn, solving not so much crimes as funny human puzzles; but the crimes, and the criminals, are forever lurking nearby, taunting him from the city's cold underworld.

It's his job to unravel the mystery, or right the wrong, or just do what the client has hired him to do. Somehow, though, there is a misstep at every turn, and John takes another small stumble towards his moment of personal truth. His midnight promise. Perhaps even his redemption.

Zane Lovitt was a documentary filmmaker before turning his hand to crime fiction, and his stories have since appeared in Scribe's New Australian Stories 2 and in the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. 'Leaving the Fountainhead' won the SD Harvey Short Story Award at the 2010 Ned Kelly Awards for Australian crime fiction. Zane lives in Melbourne.

'The Midnight Promise delivers. Zane Lovitt is a writer to watch.' Shane Maloney

'The Midnight Promise crashes straight into Temple, Corris and Chandler territory...You can recommend The Midnight Promise by the back cover - Text has it nailed.' Australian Bookseller and Publisher

'What makes Dorn such a compelling narrator is that for all his decrepitude he has a reflective spirit and an insightful eye...An often brutal, yet brutally reflective, examination of the human condition.' Weekend Australian

'Lovitt has crafted a notable, confident first novel. Intelligent, never ponderous, The Midnight Promise wears the battered fedora of the crime genre with stylish ease and moves at a brisk pace. Told with intensity and conviction, it offers a refreshing perspective on a well worked genre.' Australian Book Review

'The Midnight Promise is the kind of zesty Australian crime writing that doesn't come along often...Lovitt's evocation of Melbourne locales has the same recognisability, affection and flair for soaking up the stink of a place as Shane Maloney's Murray Whelan books.' Saturday Age, Sydney Morning Herald and Canberra Times

'Smacking of grit and realism...The Midnight Promise is flat-out one of the most enjoyable crime books out there. Australian noir with a nod to Raymond Carver - there's lots of drinking, dark streets, and wisecracks that you'll grin like mad over. Every story is its own little world, all completely satisfying but so involving you'll put the book down wishing for more.' Readings Monthly

The U. P. Trail (Illustrated Edition)【電子書籍】[ Zane Grey ]
|

The U.P. Trail (1918) is one of Zane Grey's most detailed and panoramic Western novels; indeed, it is first-rate historical fiction in addition to being one of his most gripping romance-adventures. The "trail" in this instance is the quest to build the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1860s across remote and rugged stretches of the West.

It is a portrait of the incredibly brave, tough Irish laborers whose hands laid the ties and drove the spikes; of the defiant Sioux, doomed to be driven back by the infernal "iron horse" of the white man; of the free-spirited trappers who also dreaded the coming of the rails into their virgin wilderness; of the violent, hellish camp-towns that sprang up and vanished again and again along the route of the advancing railroad; but above all of the romance between little Allie, who survives the hideous massacre of her wagon train, and young Neale, the gifted engineer -- "a New Englander of poor family, self-educated, wild for adventure, keen for achievement, eager, ardent . . . with strong latent possibilities of character" -- whose daring genius allows the railway to span impossible gorges and climb dizzying heights. Allie and Neale lose and find and lose and find each other across the vast wastes of the West as the politics of the U.P. play themselves out with their own tragic logic.

In the course of the novel's sweep, we get to know a seductive camp follower called Beauty Stanton who conceives a hopeless love for Neale, and dies for it. Grey's description of her end conveys pathos of the highest order. Finally all her ravaged loveliness is consigned to the desert, along with the other fatalities of the town:

"The wind blew steadily in from the desert, sifting the sand in low, thin sheets. Afternoon waned, the sun sank, twilight crept over the barren waste. There were no sounds but the seep of sand, the moan of wind, the mourn of wolf. Loneliness came with the night that mantled Beauty Stanton's grave. . . . On that slope the wind always blew, and always the sand seeped, dusting over everything, imperceptibly changing the surface of the earth. The desert was still at work. . . . In the eternal workshop of nature, the tenants of these unnamed and forgotten graves would mingle dust of good and dust of evil, and by the divinity of death resolve equally into the elements again." - Source: Marian Coombs, Crofton, Maryland

Let it be noted, however, that when Zane Grey writes about someone, he or she will never be forgotten.

This edition of the book contains 10 classic Union Pacific Railroad illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.

Pearl Zane Grey (January 31, 1872 ? October 23, 1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that presented an idealized image of the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book.

Frontiers of Taste Food Sovereignty, Sustainability and Indigenous?Settler Relations In Australia【電子書籍】[ Zane Ma Rhea ]
|

This book provides a critical, multiperspective, sociohistorical analysis of the role of food in postcolonial Indigenous, British and French settler relations. Drawing on archival resources from Australian explorers, settlers and nation builders, the book argues that contemporary issues of food security, sovereignty and sustainability have been significantly shaped by the colonial impact on human foodways. The author goes on to enhance readers’ understanding of how contact between inhabitants and newcomers was shaped and informed by food, and how these engagements established a modus vivendi that carries through to the present day.

Based on the assessment of archival records, it uses a comparative, socio-historical lens to investigate contact between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people where the exchange of food or knowledge about food took place. It finds that the transfer of food and food knowledge was multifaceted, and the flow of food knowledgeoccurred in both directions, although these exchanges were neither symmetrical nor balanced. It also analyzes and discusses food as a focal point of activity. The final chapter offers an assessment of the potential for the development of a sustainable, nutritious, tasty Australian cuisine that moves beyond the tropes and stereotypical narratives embedded into colonial Indigenous-settler relations in the context of food. If this was accepted by all Australians, it would allow opportunities to be created for Indigenous Australians to develop food products for the market that are sustainable, economically viable and developed in ways that are culturally appropriate.

Language and Superdiversity Indonesians Knowledging at Home and Abroad【電子書籍】[ Zane Goebel ]
|

Scholars of language ideology have encouraged us to reflect on and explore where social categories come from, how they have been reproduced, and whether and to what extent they are relevant to everyday interactional practices. Taking up on these issues, this book focuses on how ethnicity has been semiotically constructed, valued, and reproduced in Indonesia since Dutch colonial times, and how this category is drawn upon in everyday talk. In doing so, this book also seeks to engage with scholarship on superdiversity while highlighting some points of engagement with work on ideas about community. The book draws upon a broad range of scholarship on Indonesia, recordings of Indonesian television from the mid-1990s onwards, and recordings of the talk of Indonesian students living in Japan. It is argued that some of the main mechanisms for the reproduction and revaluation of ethnicity and its links with linguistic form include waves of technological innovations that bring people into contact (e.g. changes in transportation infrastructure, introduction of print media, television, radio, the internet, etc.), and the increasing use of one-to-many participation frameworks such as school classrooms and the mass media. In examining the talk of sojourning Indonesians the book goes on to explore how ideologies about ethnicity are used to establish and maintain convivial social relations while in Japan. Maintaining such relationships is not a trivial thing and it is argued that the pursuit of conviviality is an important practice because of its relationship with broader concerns about eking out a living.

Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century America, Grey employs a rich, descriptive style that immerses readers in the landscapes of both Missouri and the wild West. This novel serves not only as a coming-of-age tale but also as a commentary on the rugged individualism that characterized American society at the time, melding elements of romance and adventure with a keen observation of human nature. First Engage Yourself So You Want to Engage Your Employees?【電子書籍】[ Zane Safrit ]
|

Millions of articles and podcasts, thousands of books, flood the internet of things showing managers the myriad ways and resources and principles to help their employees rise from their cubicles and ... engage in their work, with each other, with their managers, with their purpose and mission. Rightfully, so. Companies reporting higher employee engagement levels report higher profits, faster revenue growth, rising cash-flows, greater customer loyalty, fewer accidents ... the list of positive financial outcomes goes on and on. So, why then have employee engagement levels remained unchanged for over the last decade? Why when it makes so much sense, when the connections from an employee’s engagement to their work to the results of their work are more than line of sight, they are line of touch, do employee engagement levels remain unchanged? It may be because “employee engagement” is too often treated as one more mandated program to rain down on the heads of managers and team leaders and then trickle-down on to the employees’ desks. It may be because employees are asked to do what managers and leaders are unwilling to do themselves. It may be because leaders and managers have not fully engaged themselves with their own roles and missions and purposes before going and seeking that commitment from those they lead and manage. Armed with 20+ years experience in call center operations, from entry-level customer service to CEO, Zane Safrit walks you through these simple, affordable, doable steps to first engage yourself before seeking engagement from those you lead. He’s taken these steps himself in creating businesses marked by revenue growth, positive cash flows, customer evangelists built on the foundation of engaged employees. These are simple steps that anyone at any level in a company can take the most important step in creating a culture of engagement. That is to first engage themselves. These step cost nothing but your time and attention. Precious resources, definitely. However, you can start them today with no budgets to be required and approved and no PowerPoint presentations to organize or watch. Then once engaged you can begin to lead by example in creating a culture of engagement with those around you.

The Young Pitcher【電子書籍】[ Zane Grey ]

Ken Ward had not been at the big university many days before he realized the miserable lot of a freshman. At first he was sorely puzzled. College was so different from what he had expected. At the high school of his home town, which, being the capital of the State, was no village, he had been somebody. Then his summer in Arizona, with its wild adventures, had given him a self-appreciation which made his present situation humiliating. There were more than four thousand students at the university. Ken felt himself the youngest, the smallest, the one of least consequence. He was lost in a shuffle of superior youths. In the forestry department he was a mere boy; and he soon realized that a freshman there was the same as anywhere. The fact that he weighed nearly one hundred and sixty pounds, and was no stripling, despite his youth, made not one whit of difference. Unfortunately, his first overture of what he considered good-fellowship had been made to an upper-classman, and had been a grievous mistake. Ken had not yet recovered from its reception. He grew careful after that, then shy, and finally began to struggle against disappointment and loneliness. Outside of his department, on the campus and everywhere he ventured, he found things still worse. There was something wrong with him, with his fresh complexion, with his hair, with the way he wore his tie, with the cut of his clothes. In fact, there was nothing right about him. He had been so beset that he could not think of anything but himself. One day, while sauntering along a campus path, with his hands in his pockets, he met two students coming toward him. They went to right and left, and, jerking his hands from his pockets, roared in each ear, "How dare you walk with your hands in your pockets!" Another day, on the library step, he encountered a handsome bareheaded youth with a fine, clean-cut face and keen eyes, who showed the true stamp of the great university. "Here," he said, sharply, "aren't you a freshman?" "Why--yes," confessed Ken. "I see you have your trousers turned up at the bottom." "Yes--so I have." For the life of him Ken could not understand why that simple fact seemed a crime, but so it was. "Turn them down!" ordered the student.

The Last of the Plainsmen - The Original Classic Edition【電子書籍】[ Grey Zane ]

Finally available, a high quality book of the original classic edition of The Last of the Plainsmen.

This is a new and freshly published edition of this culturally important work by Zane Grey, which is now, at last, again available to you.

Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Last of the Plainsmen:

I want to show the color and beauty of those painted cliffs and the long, brown-matted bluebell-dotted aisles in the grand forests; I want to give a suggestion of the tang of the dry, cool air; and particularly I want to throw a little light upon the life and nature of that strange character and remarkable man, Buffalo Jones.

...Once he had told me how, when a mere child, he had hazarded limb and neck to capture a fox squirrel, how he had held on to the vicious little animal, though it bit his hand through; how he had never learned to play the games of boyhood; that when the youths of the little Illinois village were at play, he roamed the prairies, or the rolling, wooded hills, or watched a gopher hole.

...To tell of Mozes derelictions up to that time would take more space than would a history of the whole trip; but the enumeration of several incidents will at once stamp him as a dog of character, and will establish the fact that even if his progenitors had never taken any blue ribbons, they had at least bequeathed him fighting blood.

... We had taken Moze to the El Tovar at the Grand Canyon, and finding it impossible to get over to the north rim, we left him with one of Joness men, called Rust, who was working on the Canyon trail.

...Reality showed me desolate mountains gleaming bare in the sun, long lines of red bluffs, white sand dunes, and hills of blue clay, areas of level ground-in all, a many-hued, boundless world in itself, wonderful and beautiful, fading all around into the purple haze of deceiving distance.

The Engaged Hiring Process A Simple Plan to Help You Hire the Best【電子書籍】[ Zane Safrit ]

This is a practical guide for hiring managers. I guide you through the proven steps and resources I used to make the right decision every company needs to make to sustain its growth. That decision is who you hire and how you hire that person. I learned these methods, found these resources and made these decisions while I worked in the trenches, here in the U.S. and overseas, and always in the fast-moving telecommunications industry. As Country Manager for a newly-opened subsidiary I saw how important it was to communicate thoroughly and methodically and include each colleague in the hiring decision. That helped lower language and culture barriers, build our relationship on the basis of engagement and trust. We doubled revenues and tripled new orders within the first six months. As CEO of a small conference call service provider I discovered more tools and resources, created a simple hiring process that allowed us to make four excellent hiring decisions but welcome each new hire with an engaged and inspired workforce. This last part, welcome each new hire with an engaged and inspired workforce, was the key to our success. We boosted our sales conversion rates from 50% to over 80%. We grew our revenues by 80% in an industry best described as ‘commodity-hell.’ We sustained our positive cash-flows. You will see I include proven resources and methods from other recognized experts in small business hiring and talent management in addition to my real-world examples of how we applied them in a dynamic environment marked with rapid change and the need for ‘all hands on deck.’ In all journeys like this one, there are discoveries; sometimes they preceded by mistakes and failures. I share those - discoveries and mistakes - to help you avoid them in your journey. Good hiring decisions are made with the active participation of all your stakeholders, aka, your employees. They have a vested interest in who sits beside them and whose work they depend on for their own success. I show you how to enlist and inspire their participation. That has the added benefit of boosting their active engagement not only during the hiring process - creating the job description and participating in the interviews - but also onboarding the new A-Player joining your group into their engaged and enthusiastic team. Avoiding common mistakes and making bad hiring decisions are the only shortcuts I offer you. Hiring decisions are the most important decisions you will make in your business. Whether you are a team leader, a division manager, a C-Suite executive or you work at home and are ready to hire a part-time web designer, this decision is what makes your company survive, thrive or disappear. This requires your full participation as it requires the full participation of everyone around you. I show you tools, resources and methods that work engaging your key stakeholders - your employees - to make the best hiring decision. The rest is up to you.

Recognize THEM! 52 Ways to Recognize Your Employees In Ways They Value【電子書籍】[ Zane Safrit ]

Employee recognition is a $40 billion industry. And as it has grown, employee engagement levels have remain unchanged and uninspiring. 70% of employees in the US remain disengaged, intellectually and emotionally, with their work and their results. These are 52 ways you can recognize your employees in ways your employees will value. How can I say that with such confidence? I have used each of these 52 ways in building a company strong enough to thrive in the face of two wars, a recession while competing against global brands whose advertising budgets dwarfed our company's total revenues. Yet, by recognizing the strengths and talents of our employees in ways in which they valued we became an indomitable force for our customers and ourselves. Recognition by peers and by one's immediate bosses is one of the top ways to instill engagement and passion for their work among your employees. What's often overlooked by the well-meaning leaders in the employee recognition industry is the power of the simple steps to recognize another person. Saying hi, listening, recognizing their accomplishments to their peers and managers, celebrating those successes on social media, giving them the best parking spaces, organizing meetings so they are productive and meaningful. These are some of the simple steps that require not budget approval, no boring powerpoint presentations before a board or fellow managers. I used them and they drove revenue growth, positive cash flows, streams of positive testimonials and referrals, raised our customer loyalty scores and created an engaged and passionate culture of engaged workers where the primary expressions each day were smiles and congratulations. Employee recognition starts with recognizing that person who stands in front of you, who works with you each day, whose success contributes to yours, who spends the majority of their waking hours working with you and others to build a brand for which they can be proud. Employee recognition, in these simple steps, acknowledges our primary drivers as people and employees. Those drivers are overwhelmingly intrinsic not extrinsic. These include the ability to be recognized among their peers and by their immediate managers, the chance to grow, the tools and resources to accomplish their work, the authority and autonomy to work as an adult, the chance to fail and learn from that failure. Extrinsic motivations, salary and bonuses, are important. But ranking them among all motivators leaves them near the bottom of the list. The reason I shared this list along with inspiring quotes and the story of a successful leader who realized he could be even more successful if he invested a few moments each day in recognizing those around him is I understand the challenge of business leaders in building and sustaining their business. I understand the barrage of distractions demanding their time and the easy lure of pretty colors and the shiniest, newest, management buzzwords. Employee recognition is one of those trendy buzzwords. But it's execution is timeless. These steps can be used with any sized company in any country in any industry. You can take many of these steps as soon as you read them. You can see the results and learn as you go, customizing them for your culture's needs. They are steps too often overlooked as more demands are placed on our time. Many of these steps are ones which I realized I had forgotten, thrown aside, in my urgency to reach the next quarter's goals. Once I reintroduced them, took them, saw their immediate impact, read the reports that showed their bottomline impact, saw the numbers of smiles and laughs grow along with our revenues and cash-flows, then I realized we had a strategy and package of tactics that would carry us through all the changes in our industry facing us. They did. Enjoy them. Take them. Enjoy their results. Let's create engaging workplaces that allow us to bring smiles back to our day.

“BUT the man's almost dead.”The words stung John Hare's fainting spirit into life. He opened his eyes. The desert still stretched before him, the appalling thing that had overpowered him with its deceiving purple distance. Near by stood a sombre group of men.“Leave him here,” said one, addressing a gray-bearded giant. “He's the fellow sent into southern Utah to spy out the cattle thieves. He's all but dead. Dene's outlaws are after him. Don't cross Dene.”The stately answer might have come from a Scottish Covenanter or a follower of Cromwell.“Martin Cole, I will not go a hair's-breadth out of my way for Dene or any other man. You forget your religion. I see my duty to God.”“Yes, August Naab, I know,” replied the little man, bitterly. “You would cast the Scriptures in my teeth, and liken this man to one who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves. But I've suffered enough at the hands of Dene.”
