**Writing as S. J. Fleet, The Secret Barrister's first novel, The Cut Throat Trial, is available now.
_____

The Top Ten Sunday Times Bestseller
'A compelling, eye-opening read'** - Daily Express
'A powerful polemic' - The Sunday Times

The Secret Barrister returns to debunk the biggest legal lies of our time. Taking you from your own home to the halls of Westminster, this is the truth about justice in an age of fake law.

? Did an illegal immigrant avoid deportation because he had a cat?
? Is the law on the side of the burglar who enters your home?
? Are unelected judges ‘enemies of the people’?

Most of us think the law is only relevant to criminals, if we even think of it at all. But the law touches every area of our lives: from intimate family matters to the biggest issues in our society.

Our unfamiliarity is dangerous because it makes us vulnerable to media spin, political lies and the kind of misinformation that frequently comes from loud-mouthed amateurs and those with vested interests. This 'fake law' allows the powerful and the ignorant to corrupt justice without our knowledge ? worse, we risk letting them make us complicit.

Thankfully, The Secret Barrister is back to reveal the stupidity, malice and incompetence behind many of the biggest legal stories of recent years. In Fake Law, The Secret Barrister debunks the lies and builds a defence against the abuse of our law, our rights and our democracy that is as entertaining as it is vital.

The Barrister and the Letter of Marque【電子書籍】[ Todd Johnson ]

|

Winner of 2022 Daphne du Maurier Award in Overall Published Division and Mainstream Suspense/Mystery

As a barrister in 1818 London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only the wealthy having their voices heard, and he's a strong advocate who defends the poorer classes against the powerful. That changes the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at his door.

In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. The ship was granted a rare privilege by the king's regent: a Letter of Marque authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders operating illegally in the Indian Sea. Yet when the Padget returns to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. And the Letter--the sole proof his actions were legal--has mysteriously vanished.

Moved by the lady's distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he'd imagined.

**"**The Barrister and the Letter of Marque combines the intrigue of John Grisham, the vibrant world of Charles Dickens, and a mystery worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. . . . This richly historical and lively paced story has all the makings of a modern classic."--JOCELYN GREEN, Christy Award-winning author of Shadows of the White City

"At once atmospheric and gripping, Johnson's latest is a luminous and refreshing new offering in inspirational historical fiction."--RACHEL MCMILLAN, author of The London Restoration and The Mozart Code

"A fascinating glimpse into a Regency London readers seldom see."--ROSEANNA M. A Barrister in the Far East - Duncan McNeill Memoirs of Extraterritoriality in China, Hong Kong and Japan (1891-1926)【電子書籍】[ T.M. Thorp ]

|

I was called to the Bar in 1889 and went abroad very soon afterwards. For thirty-five years, from the beginning of 1891, I practised in Extra-territorial Courts. As we shall probably, before long, see the end of a system that has been in force ever since our country came into direct relations with the alien cultures of China and Japan, I think that perhaps this record, which covers the period of its decline, may be of interest to the international legal fraternity. Although some years may elapse before H.B.M Supreme Court for China goes the way of H.B.M Court for Japan, it is tolerably certain that no young barrister or solicitor commencing practice in Shanghai in 1930 will be able to report in 1950 that a British Court still exists there.

Most people have a general idea of what Extra-territoriality (or Ex-territoriality or Ex-trality) means; but I may as well state here that, in countries which have by Treaty conceded extra-territorial privileges to British subjects, such persons are amenable only to the law of England administered by British officials. The subjects of other countries having similar Treaties enjoy, of course, the like immunity from local jurisdiction. It is a typically Chinese system. Chinese jurisdiction applies to universal matters but, as we shall see, established Treaties provide us with much free rein to govern private disputes...

The Tinners Hut A Barrister Phileas Cluff Novel【電子書籍】[ Gil V Jackson ]

|

Alternative history can be tackled in many ways. I choose time travel and multi verse as I believe in the possibility that for every event, action, decision, choice made (in many cases random or accidental), will have an infinitesimal number of alternatives. All these, will of course, create other choices down-the-line. My science fiction novel, 'The Tinners' Hut is one such example where cause and effect of a decision can have dire consequences without the perpetrator being aware; or even considering an eventual chaos. In this case, it's a king of England. His decreeing one event only to change it later, will cause havoc 300 years down his particular line that will affect the monarchy he is trying to defend.

_______________________

When barrister Phileas Cluff, is enticed into a time-portal, he finds himself having to defend a man already hanged for murder in 1715. Assisted by his fiancee, Jackie Forbes in 2008, he has to build a case for a defence without 20th century forensics to aid him.

If the man dies on the scaffold his descendant will not be able to save the lives of 300 children being held in a 2008 hostage siege at a school in Bristol.

Buy Your Copy of THE TINNERS HUT today

and begin your journey with this Paranormal Historical Novel that's Stylish! The Experiences of a Barrister, and Confessions of an Attorney【電子書籍】[ Samuel Warren ]

A fascinating account of the personal experiences of various cases undertaken by 19th century English lawyer Samuel Warren. Excerpt: Something more than half a century ago, a person, in going along Holborn, might have seen, near the corner of one of the thoroughfares which diverge towards Russell Square, the respectable-looking shop of a glover and haberdasher named James Harvey, a man generally esteemed by his neighbours, and who was usually considered well to do in the world. Like many London tradesmen, Harvey was originally from the country. He had come up to town when a poor lad, to push his fortune, and by dint of steadiness and civility, and a small property left him by a distant relation, he had been able to get into business on his own account, and to attain that most important element of success in Londonー"a connection." Shortly after setting up in the world, he married a young woman from his native town, to whom he had been engaged ever since his school-days; and at the time our narrative commences he was the father of three children.

The "Diary of John Manningham" is an invaluable historical document that captures the intricacies of everyday life in 17th-century England. Through the lens of his meticulous accounts, readers gain insight into the political, social, and religious dynamics of the time, as well as the impact of significant events such as the English Civil War.
English barrister and novelist Samuel Warren wrote a legal parody titled "The Experiences of a Barrister, and Confessions of an Attorney" in the 19th century. First published in 1833, the book presents a light-hearted and satirical view of the English legal system in the author's day. A barrister named Mr. Subtle reveals his experiences, insights, and confessions regarding the legal profession as the story progresses. Warren gives readers a satirical look into the inner workings of the legal profession by exposing the peculiarities, foolishness, and absurdities of the legal system through clever anecdotes and humorous situations. The book explores a number of legal practice topics, such as lawyer personalities, legal ethics, and courtroom antics. Its humorous storytelling entertains the reader while shedding light on the peculiarities and difficulties of the legal profession. The Bentley Barrister【電子書籍】[ Joel Erik Thompson ]

Collum Arbuthnot Taylor was a hell of a quarterback, even as a kid, but he would always simply be CAT to the public, since sportswriters avoid long names, and initials were easier for them to remember and spell.

CAT grew up in an orphanage, always pushing himself to gain recognition by being the best, especially playing football. As a full-scholarship quarterback at Notre Dame, he became a multiyear All-American. After graduating, he earned both a Heisman Trophy, as the nation's best college football player, and a Rhodes scholarship, as an outstanding scholar, because he'd worked just as hard in his classes as he had in the stadiums.

He also became the NFL's first-round draft pick. But rather than signing to immediately play professional football, he opted instead to study law at Oxford University in England on his Rhodes scholarship for a year before agreeing to sign a pro contract for the following season. The signing bonus also bought him his first ever car. A Bentley, of course, purchased directly from the factory in Crewe where they made them. "Naturally, nothing but the best for the best," according to the sports media report of that!

After an ugly car crash instantly ends his football career, his future moves into the criminal courts and his law career.

Collum, as we catch up to him, is in the midst of an ugly high-profile murder trial, with ugly racial overtones, and before a belligerent judge he's fought with and competed against since their childhood years growing up at different schools, but in the same small city.

We're also privy to CAT's planning and courtroom trial strategy meetings with his staff and in jail visits with his defendant/client. During a critical stage of this trial. CAT answers a late-night phone call. It's from his best friend and former teammate Racer Roosevelt who has just been arrested a thousand miles away and charged with raping the local TV news anchor. He swears to CAT that he's innocent, begging him to come and represent him.

Can CAT be in two places at once? Never know what you can accomplish until you give it your best shot!

The Albert Gate Mystery: Being Further Adventures of Reginald Brett, Barrister Detective【電子書籍】[ Louis Tracy ]

Reginald Brett, barr ister-at-law and amateur detective, had seldom been more at peace with the world and his own conscience than when he entered the dining-room of his cosy flat this bright October morning. Since the famous affair of Lady Delia Lyle's disappearance and death, he had not been busy, and the joy of healthy idleness is only known to the hard worker. Again, while dressing, he had received a letter inviting him to a quiet shoot at a delightful place in the country. All these things blended with happy inconsequence to render Brett contented in mind and affable in manner. "It's a fine morning, Smith," he said cheerily, as he settled himself at the table where his "man" was already pouring out the coffee.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt The case for supernatural phenomena in the modern world, with a foreword by Maria Ahern, a leading barrister【電子書籍】[ Gordon Smith ]
|

Gordon Smith is the medium's medium who outstanding gifts are recognised by prominent sceptics and which have been tested in laboratory conditions at Glasgow University, with astonishing results.

But usually when we try to assess the claims of psychics and mediums or evidence of supernatural phenomena we are examining events taking place outside the controlled conditions of the scientific laboratory. In this new book Gordon Smith argues that most suitable standards we can apply when trying to decide whether or not it is reasonable to believe such claims are the same standards we usually use to assess disputes in human affairs - the standards of the law court.

As a leading medium Gordon Smith is part of an 'apostolic succession' of mediums that goes back through famous mediums like Albert Best, Helen Duncan and DD Hume to the start of Spiritualism modern times in American in the mid nineteenth century. In this book he examines the historical evidence, admitting fraud where he finds it, but showing that great weight of testimony proves the reality of these supernatural and spiritual phenomena 'beyond reasonable doubt'.

As leading barrister Maria Ahern writes in her foreword: 'I have assessed the evidence in this book. Just as I would in a trial. There is credible evidence from various unconnected sources all giving evidence that points the same way. The evidence has been collated by a credible source; Gordon Smith is widely acknowledged as a gifted medium and has provided many with evidence of one of life's great unanswered questions'. She advises the reader: 'Look at the evidence, assess it fairly, allow for any sensible and appropriate doubt and reach your verdict'.

Summary of The Secret Barrister's Nothing But The Truth【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The fork in the road for law students is marked as early as freshers’ week. As you have chosen to study the academic discipline of law, it is assumed that you not only have designs on practicing it, but also know with a fair degree of certainty whether you want to practice law or not. #2 I was able to meet a real-life barrister by giving my name correctly and shaking hands with him. I was unable to come up with any conversation topics, however, so I left after two agonizing minutes. #3 I begin my mini-pupillage with a civil law barristers’ chambers, following barristers who specialize in personal injury work. I am shocked to hear that every day, I ask myself whether I made the right choice. #4 The settlement offered by the defendant’s insurers was seven figures, and the conference was to discuss it with Dianne’s clients. The sum didn’t feel like much of a victory to me, given that it was far less than what Grisham had promised me in The King of Torts.
