For the Cause of Righteousness: A Global History of Blacks and Mormonism, 1830-2013【電子書籍】[ Russell W. Stevenson ]

This book broaches one of the most sensitive topics in the history of Mormonism: the story of the LDS community’s turbulent relationship with the black population. For the Cause of Righteousness: A Global History of Blacks and Mormonism, 1830-2013 promises to tell a story of how an American religious community could wander through the rocky landscape of American racial politics, all while hoping to hold onto its institutional integrity in the face of attacks from both within and without. Drawing on a rich array of archival documents and oral testimonies, For the Cause of Righteousness suggests that understanding race and Mormonism requires far more than watching the movements of well-dressed men on North Temple; it calls for understanding the dynamics of global Mormon communities ranging from Mowbray to Accra, from Berkeley to Rio Di Janeiro.

But as any historian will say, primary sources matter. Thus, For the Cause of Righteousness offers up not only a narrative history of the global black Mormon community but also an anthology of primary source transcripts: letters, newspaper articles, and speech transcripts, all in hopes that readers might take one more step toward understanding a story that simultaneously inspires, troubles, and urges Latter-day Saints into understanding a provincial religion that has reached global proportions.

Part 1 includes a narrative global history of blacks and Mormonism.

Devil's works about Africa and the "blacks" by the whites Volume 1: The time has come: forgetting is forbidden, unadorned, the whole truth【電子書籍】[ Dantse Dantse ]

Forgetting is forbidden. Unpunished, a continent, a "race" wants justice and reparation. It is important to know what actually happened and to record it. It is a deluge that has come over the black people. The most brutal, appalling and shocking crimes were committed against these people, which have not been properly condemned, excused and repaired to this day. So far, these crimes against humanity have gone unpunished, called genocide in other ethnic groups. On the contrary, the perpetrators deal with their crimes arrogantly and almost proudly, that even centuries after the numerous crimes they still make fun of the victims and thereby treat them derogatorily. This is unique in history. The whites who committed such crimes against life and humanity have no sensitivity to the fact that they systematically and according to plan abused, raped, mutilated, tortured and killed hundreds of millions of their (the victims') fathers, mothers, daughters, wives, children, babies, destroyed entire cultures, stole their wealth, soil, agriculture and stole much of the labor force. The historical reappraisal of the slavery and colonial past is very inadequate. Although this western world still owes its boom, development, social prosperity and stability, but also Africans and blacks owe their impoverishment, social destruction, instability and their phenomena to these colonial times. This means that the consequences of slavery and colonialism are still very present today. On one hand, they bring privileges to the colonial masters and their societies that they do not want to lose, and on another hand, they still bring immense disadvantages to the victims and largely explain why they are the way they are and why they still cannot free themselves today. Every white person benefits from the crimes of their ancestors and every black person loses because of it. "With my book, I want to contribute so that a terrible injustice against the continent of Africa and all the people who come from there is not forgotten and considered like "peanuts"." Blacks and Britannity【電子書籍】[ Dani?le Joly ]

This title was first published in 2001: Featuring original research concerning young African-Caribbeans in Birmingham, this book addresses complex issues of urban violence and insecurity, racism and discrimination, alienation, resistance and social networks. Employing the methodology of sociological intervention developed by Alain Touraine, the book explores the experiences of a group of young people who are simultaneously presumed to be victims and perpetrators of violence. It examines their relationship to this violence, its meanings for and effects upon them, how they constitute themselves as social actors and subjects, and their capacity for action. The book also addresses the fact that ethnic monitoring and multicultural policies place the question of ethnicity on the British social and political agenda alongside issues of racism and discrimination. Exploring both the perceived and personally experienced position of young people within this context, it sheds important new light upon processes of group identification and action.

The Blacks of Premodern China【電子書籍】[ Don J. Wyatt ]

Premodern Chinese described a great variety of the peoples they encountered as "black." The earliest and most frequent of these encounters were with their Southeast Asian neighbors, specifically the Malayans. But by the midimperial times of the seventh through seventeenth centuries C.E., exposure to peoples from Africa, chiefly slaves arriving from the area of modern Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania, gradually displaced the original Asian "blacks" in Chinese consciousness. In The Blacks of Premodern China, Don J. Wyatt presents the previously unexamined story of the earliest Chinese encounters with this succession of peoples they have historically regarded as black.

A series of maritime expeditions along the East African coastline during the early fifteenth century is by far the best known and most documented episode in the story of China's premodern interaction with African blacks. Just as their Western contemporaries had, the Chinese aboard the ships that made landfall in Africa encountered peoples whom they frequently classified as savages. Yet their perceptions of the blacks they met there differed markedly from those of earlier observers at home in that there was little choice but to regard the peoples encountered as free.

The premodern saga of dealings between Chinese and blacks concludes with the arrival in China of Portuguese and Spanish traders and Italian clerics with their black slaves in tow. In Chinese writings of the time, the presence of the slaves of the Europeans becomes known only through sketchy mentions of black bondservants. Nevertheless, Wyatt argues that the story of these late premodern blacks, laboring anonymously in China under their European masters, is but a more familiar extension of the previously untold story of their ancestors who toiled in Chinese servitude perhaps in excess of a millennium earlier.

A Country of Strangers Blacks and Whites in America【電子書籍】[ David K. Shipler ]

A Country of Strangers is a magnificent exploration of the psychological landscape where blacks and whites meet. To tell the story in human rather than abstract terms, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David K. Shipler bypasses both extremists and celebrities and takes us among ordinary Americans as they encounter one another across racial lines.

We learn how blacks and whites see each other, how they interpret each other's behavior, and how certain damaging images and assumptions seep into the actions of even the most unbiased. We penetrate into dimensions of stereotyping and discrimination that are usually invisible, and discover the unseen prejudices and privileges of white Americans, and what black Americans make of them.

We explore the competing impulses of integration and separation: the reference points by which the races navigate as they venture out and then withdraw; the biculturalism that many blacks perfect as they move back and forth between the white and black worlds, and the homesickness some blacks feel for the comfort of all-black separateness. There are portrayals of interracial families and their multiracial children--expert guides through the clashes created by racial blending in America. We see how whites and blacks each carry the burden of our history.

Black-white stereotypes are dissected: the physical bodies that we see, the mental qualities we imagine, the moral character we attribute to others and to ourselves, the violence we fear, the power we seek or are loath to relinquish.

The book makes clear that we have the ability to shape our racial landscape--to reconstruct, even if not perfectly, the texture of our relationships. There is an assessment of the complexity confronting blacks and whites alike as they struggle to recognize and define the racial motivations that may or may not be present in a thought, a word, a deed. The book does not prescribe, but it documents the silences that prevail, the listening that doesn't happen, the conversations that don't take place. It looks at relations between minorities, including blacks and Jews, and blacks and Koreans. It explores the human dimensions of affirmative action, the intricate contacts and misunderstandings across racial lines among coworkers and neighbors. It is unstinting in its criticism of our society's failure to come to grips with bigotry; but it is also, happily, crowded with black people and white people who struggle in their daily lives to do just that.

A remarkable book that will stimulate each of us to reexamine and better understand our own deepest attitudes in regard to race in America.

In Hope of Liberty Culture, Community and Protest Among Northern Free Blacks, 1700-1860【電子書籍】[ Lois E. Horton ]

Prince Hall, a black veteran of the American Revolution, was insulted and disappointed but probably not surprised when white officials refused his offer of help. He had volunteered a troop of 700 Boston area blacks to help quell a rebellion of western Massachusetts farmers led by Daniel Shays during the economic turmoil in the uncertain period following independence. Many African Americans had fought for America's liberty and their own in the Revolution, but their place in the new nation was unresolved. As slavery was abolished in the North, free blacks gained greater opportunities, but still faced a long struggle against limits to their freedom, against discrimination, and against southern slavery. The lives of these men and women are vividly described in In Hope of Liberty, spanning the 200 years and eight generations from the colonial slave trade to the Civil War. In this marvelously peopled history, James and Lois Horton introduce us to a rich cast of characters. There are familiar historical figures such as Crispus Attucks, a leader of the Boston Massacre and one of the first casualties of the American Revolution; Sojourner Truth, former slave and eloquent antislavery and women's rights activist whose own family had been broken by slavery when her son became a wedding present for her owner's daughter; and Prince Whipple, George Washington's aide, easily recognizable in the portrait of Washington crossing the Delaware River. And there are the countless men and women who struggled to lead their daily lives with courage and dignity: Zilpha Elaw, a visionary revivalist who preached before crowds of thousands; David James Peck, the first black to graduate from an American medical school in 1848; Paul Cuffe, a successful seafaring merchant who became an ardent supporter of the black African colonization movement; and Nancy Prince, at eighteen the effective head of a scattered household of four siblings, each boarded in different homes, who at twenty-five was formally presented to the Russian court. In a seamless narrative weaving together all these stories and more, the Hortons describe the complex networks, both formal and informal, that made up free black society, from the black churches, which provided a sense of community and served as a training ground for black leaders and political action, to the countless newspapers which spoke eloquently of their aspirations for blacks and played an active role in the antislavery movement, to the informal networks which allowed far-flung families to maintain contact, and which provided support and aid to needy members of the free black community and to fugitives from the South. Finally, they describe the vital role of the black family, the cornerstone of this variegated and tightly knit community In Hope of Liberty brilliantly illuminates the free black communities of the antebellum North as they struggled to reconcile conflicting cultural identities and to work for social change in an atmosphere of racial injustice. As the black community today still struggles with many of the same problems, this insightful history reminds us how far we have come, and how far we have yet to go.

Blacks, Mulattos, and the Dominican Nation is the first English translation of the classic text Los negros, los mulatos y la naci?n dominicana by esteemed Dominican scholar Franklin J. Franco. Published in 1969, this book was the first systematic work on the role of Afro-descendants in Dominican society, the first society of the modern Americas where a Black-Mulatto population majority developed during the 16th century. Franco’s work, a foundational text for Dominican ethnic studies, constituted a paradigm shift, breaking with the distortions of traditional histories that focused on the colonial elite to place Afro-descendants, slavery, and race relations at the center of Dominican history.

This translation includes a new introduction by Silvio Torres-Saillant (Syracuse University) which contextualizes Franco's work, explaining the milieu in which he was writing, and bringing the historiography of race, slavery, and the Dominican Republic up to the present. Making this pioneering work accessible to an English-speaking audience for the first time, this is a must-have for anyone interested in the lasting effects of African slavery on the Dominican population and Caribbean societies.

Blacks fought with whites in the American War for Independence against England. In fact, without the aid of these black soldiers, one wonders if the Americans would have won the war. These blacks were never considered equal to whites but a great number died for a country that looked upon them as being inferior and unworthy of total freedom. After the American War for Independence, many whites in the North felt guilty about holding slaves. A vast number of blacks were freed as a humane gesture. Blacks were also freed because slavery as an economic institution in the North was dead and industrialization was steadily taking its place. These blacks were semi-free because they did not really enjoy the same rights or privileges as whites did.

Oversight Representing the Interests of Blacks and Latinos in Congress【電子書籍】[ Michael D. Minta ]

Oversight answers the question of whether black and Latino legislators better represent minority interests in Congress than white legislators, and it is the first book on the subject to focus on congressional oversight rather than roll-call voting. In this important book, Michael Minta demonstrates that minority lawmakers provide qualitatively better representation of black and Latino interests than their white counterparts. They are more likely to intervene in decision making by federal agencies by testifying in support of minority interests at congressional oversight hearings. Minority legislators write more letters urging agency officials to enforce civil rights policies, and spend significant time and effort advocating for solutions to problems that affect all racial and ethnic groups, such as poverty, inadequate health care, fair housing, and community development.

In Oversight, Minta argues that minority members of Congress act on behalf of broad minority interests--inside and outside their districts--because of a shared bond of experience and a sense of linked fate. He shows how the presence of black and Latino legislators in the committee room increases the chances that minority perspectives and concerns will be addressed in committee deliberations, and also how minority lawmakers are effective at countering negative stereotypes about minorities in policy debates on issues like affirmative action and affordable housing.

Justice in America The Separate Realities of Blacks and Whites【電子書籍】[ Mark Peffley ]

As reactions to the O. J. Simpson verdict, the Rodney King beating, and the Amadou Diallo killing make clear, whites and African Americans in the United States inhabit two different perceptual worlds, with the former seeing the justice system as largely fair and color blind and the latter believing it to be replete with bias and discrimination. The authors tackle two important questions in this book: what explains the widely differing perceptions, and why do such differences matter? They attribute much of the racial chasm to the relatively common personal confrontations that many blacks have with law enforcement ? confrontations seldom experienced by whites. More importantly, the authors demonstrate that this racial chasm is consequential: it leads African Americans to react much more cynically to incidents of police brutality and racial profiling, and also to be far more skeptical of punitive anti-crime policies ranging from the death penalty to three-strikes laws.

Blacks in Portraits Volume 2【電子書籍】[ Jerlyn Thomas ]

This second volume of Blacks in Portraits was always part of the plan, and here it is.There were so many questions behind this one. Will it be as successful as the first? What are the reader's expectations? Is this book meeting the goals that I had with the first?

My intention, still, is to inspire you to learn something about these fantastic figures. This time, I collaborated with my friend Delvin Kariuki to utilize fabulous fabrics from collections listed on her website Kwamboka.com. I posted them on my feed on Instagram (@commuteartist) in animated form, adding Black musicians and bands. It was a month-long celebration of how Americans of African descent influenced our country. I'm so proud of this project! I'm literally in tears because this journey has been such a long one. It is 2021, most of us are familiar with last year's death of George Floyd, this year's adopting of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, and the unearthing of the history of the Tulsa Massacre. My intention was never to make these volumes political, but to continue the work of Carter G. Woodson (page 34). More and more, we are realizing that reviving history and teaching it accurately is essential to our progress.

I want to know what you think about this volume, so please send me your suggestions and critiques.

To make this particular volume possible, I asked for suggestions from my Facebook feed. I want to thank everyone in no specific order: Anthony Carter, Ron Goldberg, Rochelle Dangleben, Stalina Gibson, Caitlin Jones, Sarah Logan, Amonia Paule Rolle, Mandy Massicott, Marlon Jean-Giles, Makedo Okolo, Valerie Baker Donaghy, Elaine Ren?-Buncome, Tyler Berridge-Blanc, Gardenia Willoughby.

Christian Reconstruction The American Missionary Association and Southern Blacks, 1861-1890【電子書籍】[ Joe M. Richardson ]

"Joe Richardson's Christian Reconstruction is a solid addition to historical scholarship on the work of Yankee missionaries among the freedmen during the Civil War and Reconstruction. . . . Without question, this is the most comprehensive history of the American Missionary Association (AMA), and no one has uncovered as much detailed information on any other Northern aid society. Rich in detail and strongly recommended, the book argues that the AMA struggled to prepare the liberated slaves for civil and political equality by freeing them of the shackles of ignorance, superstition and sin. This book ought to be read by all those interested in Northern educational and social reformers in the Reconstruction South."
--The Journal of American History

"In an extraordinarily balanced study Richardson has synthesized a wealth of sources and research to produce a thoroughly convincing interpretation of the AMA and southern blacks. Besides exploring relations between the two, his main objective has been to assess the AMA's effectiveness in bringing blacks into the American mainstream. Because of his successful labors, we now have a much-needed comprehensive study of that most influential missionary organization. Whether addressing conflicts between the AMA and the US military over the treatment of contrabands, charges of racism among black and white missionaries, or the quality of association colleges, Richardson does not allow his obvious admiration for the AMA to interfere. . . . With bold logic and considerable subtlety Richardson has made an impressive contribution.
--The Journal of Southern History
