The Revolution of Buddhist Modernism J?do Shin Thought and Politics, 1890?1962【電子書籍】[ Professor Jeff Schroeder ]
|

Reacting to nineteenth-century forces of colonialism and globalization, Buddhist reformers across Asia strove to modernize Buddhist teachings, practices, and institutions. “Buddhist modernism” was typically characterized by disbelief in the supernatural, rejection of ritual, deinstitutionalization, and egalitarianism. The Revolution of Buddhist Modernism provides an account of the upheaval that took place within the world of Japanese J?do Shin (True Pure Land) Buddhism when scholar-priest Kiyozawa Manshi (1863?1903) initiated modernist reforms. Kiyozawa and his disciples, especially Soga Ry?jin and Kaneko Daiei, reenvisioned Pure Land teachings as a path to awakening in the present world rather than rebirth in a faraway Pure Land after death. This doctrinal reinterpretation led to a range of revolutionary institutional reforms, including new experiential methods of Buddhist studies, democratization of sect institutions, and enhanced cooperation with Japan’s imperialist state.

By combining intellectual history with institutional history, The Revolution of Buddhist Modernism reveals deep connections between Buddhist thought, Buddhist institutions, and national and global politics. It tracks the chaotic, fascinating history by which modernist Buddhist ideas came to be grounded in Buddhist institutions and authoritative for Buddhist communities, offering readers a compelling, ground-level view of Buddhist modernismーand traditionalismーin action.

Comparative Studies In Buddhism (Encyclopaedia Of Buddhist World Series)【電子書籍】[ Ranjana Rani Singhal ]
|

The number of Buddhists around the world is grossly underestimated. The statistics found in nearly all encyclopedias and almanacs place the number of Buddhists at approximately 500 million. This figure completely ignores over one billion Chinese people who live in the People’s Republic of China. China is officially communist (although many free market conditions are already in place) and does not keep records on religion statistics of adherents. Also, many western reference sources refuse to accept that a person can belong to more than one religion. In Asia it is quite common for one person to have two, three, or more religions. In China, it is common for a family to have a shrine in their home with statues and icons from Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. This book contains the fundamental and basic information of subject and the selection of contents makes it an appropriate textbook for the students.

Buddhist Funeral Cultures of Southeast Asia and China【
|

The centrality of death rituals has rarely been documented in anthropologically informed studies of Buddhism. Bringing together a range of perspectives including ethnographic, textual, historical and theoretically informed accounts, this edited volume presents the diversity of the Buddhist funeral cultures of mainland Southeast Asia and China. While the contributions show that the ideas and ritual practices related to death are continuously transformed in local contexts through political and social changes, they also highlight the continuities of funeral cultures. The studies are based on long-term fieldwork and covering material from Therav?da Buddhism in Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and various regions of Chinese Buddhism, both on the mainland and in the Southeast Asian diasporas. Topics such as bad death, the feeding of ghosts, pollution through death, and the ritual regeneration of life show how Buddhist cultures deal with death as a universal phenomenon of human culture.

Myanmar's Enemy Within: Buddhist Violence and the Making of a Muslim 'Other' - Francis Wade (Zed Books) 【
Roundabout Books
|
Myanmar's Enemy Within: Buddhist Violence and the Making of a Muslim 'Other'著者: Francis Wade出版社: Zed Books出版日: 2019年09月15日新しい本新古品・未使用品。 In 2017, Myanmar's military launched a campaign of violence against the Rohingya minority that UN experts later said amounted to a genocide. More than seven hundred thousand civilians fled to Bangladesh in what became the most concentrated flight of refugees since the Rwanda genocide of 1994. The warning signs of impending catastrophe that had built over years were downplayed by Western backers of the political transition, and only when the exodus began did the world finally come to acknowledge a catastrophe that had been long in the making. In this updated edition of the book that foreshadowed a genocide, Francis Wade explores how the manipulation of identities by an anxious ruling elite laid the foundations for mass violence. It asks: who gets to define a nation? How can democratic rights be weaponised against a minority? And why, at a time when the majority of citizens in Myanmar had begun to experience freedoms unseen for half a century, did much-lauded civilian leaders like Aung San Suu Kyi become complicit in the most heinous of crimes?

The Buddhist Catechism【電子書籍】[ Henry Steel Olcott ]
|

In "The Buddhist Catechism," Henry Steel Olcott presents a foundational text that distills the core teachings of Buddhism into an accessible guide for both the curious and the devout. Olcott's literary style is didactic yet engaging, characterized by a clear exposition of Buddhist principles combined with comparative reflections on Western thought. He contextualizes the teachings within the broader landscape of religious discourse of the late 19th century, aiming to bridge cultural divides and promote understanding of Buddhist philosophy and ethics to a Western audience increasingly intrigued by Eastern spirituality. Olcott, a pivotal figure in the revival of Buddhism in the West, co-founded the Theosophical Society and was deeply influenced by his studies of Eastern religions. His personal journey from a pragmatic journalist and attorney to a devoted promoter of Buddhism showcases his commitment to spiritual truth, and this background imbues the text with authenticity and passion. His immersion in Buddhist practice, along with his scholarly approach, positions him as a bridge between East and West. This catechism serves as an invaluable resource for readers seeking enlightenment or a deeper understanding of Buddhist thought. Olcott's synthesis of teachings makes it an essential reference for students of religion, scholars, and laypersons alike, inviting them to explore the profound insights of Buddhism with clarity and reverence.

|

Winner of the Eric Hoffer and Benjamin Franklin awards, this biography presents the complex, illuminating story of Rama - Dr. Frederick P. Lenz (1950 - 1998), an enlightened teacher who became a best-selling author, a well-loved albeit controversial beacon of American Buddhism, and an example of triumph over adversity.

"This is definitely a book that changes your perspective on life for the better" --Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Benjamin Franklin Award Review

"This fascinating biography captures the wisdom of a genuine, compelling teacher who combined absolute miracles with humor, fun and adventure." --Lynn V. Andrews, author of The Medicine Woman Series

Rama - Dr. Frederick Lenz was a teacher from an ancient lineage. He healed people. He filled large auditoriums with effervescent golden light. He made huge audiences shake with laughter as he filled them with luminosity and inner joy. He helped penniless students become helpful, impeccable entrepreneurs. Omens of an "unusual, not special life" (Rama's words) began in 1953 when, as a toddler, he slipped into samadhi--a timeless state of immersion in infinite light--in his mother's garden. His journey continued after high school, when he flew from Connecticut to Kathmandu, Nepal with a homemade snowboard, seeking to snow-surf the highest mountains he could find. On his first downhill run, he plowed into an aged Buddhist monk who told the incredulous teen their meeting was destiny, that his past life enlightenment would return, and he would help millions of people.

Upon his return to the U.S., he earned his Ph.D., began to teach on his own, and implemented new, American ways of placing Westerners on the path to enlightenment, beginning with higher and happier states of mind. As his own realization grew, the energy he emanated was like a huge, benevolent force.

This biography includes interviews and one on one stories from over 100 students and colleagues, each with a different perspective. Rama did not just speak about enlightenment; he modeled it. Compassionate, controversial, wise, prescient, reverent, irreverent, he was and is your Zen koan.

This-Worldly Nibb?na A Buddhist-Feminist Social Ethic for Peacemaking in the Global Community【電子書籍】[ Hsiao-Lan Hu ]
|

A Buddhist feminist social ethics for contemporary times.

Offering a feminist analysis of foundational Buddhist texts, along with a Buddhist approach to social issues in a globalized world, Hsiao-Lan Hu revitalizes Buddhist social ethics for contemporary times. Hu's feminist exegesis references the Nik?ya-s from the "Discourse Basket" of the P?li Canon. These texts, among the earliest in the Buddhist canon, are considered to contain the sayings of the Buddha and his disciples and are recognized by all Buddhist schools. At the heart of the ethics that emerges is the Buddhist notion of interdependent co-arising, which addresses the sexism, classism, and frequent overemphasis on individual liberation, as opposed to communal well-being, for which Buddhism has been criticized. Hu notes the Buddha's challenge to social hierarchies during his life and compares the notion of "non-Self" to the poststructuralist feminist rejection of the autonomous subject, maintaining that neither dissolves moral responsibility or agency. Notions of kamma, nibb?na, and dukkha (suffering) are discussed within the communal context offered by insights from interdependent co-arising and the Noble Eightfold Path. This work uniquely bridges the worlds of Buddhism, feminism, social ethics, and activism and will be of interest to scholars, students, and readers in all of these areas.

By means of a vocabulary, translation and commentary, each text is explained so concretely that it can be read with little preparation. Demythologizing Celibacy Practical Wisdom from Christian and Buddhist Monasticism【電子書籍】[ William Skudlarek OSB ]
|

When St. Benedict compiled his Rule for Monasteries in the early decades of the sixth century, the Buddhist monastic code had already been in existence for about nine hundred years. Since monastic life is shaped by spiritual practices that are very similar across different religious traditions, it should not be too much of a stretch to suggest that Christians can learn from the accumulated wisdom of Buddhist monasticism.

For Buddhists, celibacy, accompanied by skillful reflection on their personal reactions to it, is a means of letting go of attachment to sensory pleasure. Buddhist monks do not marry; they strive to relinquish the desire for sexual pleasure because this form of gratification obstructs the one-pointed stillness that leads to insight.

For Christians, celibacyーlike marriageーis ultimately about love: responding to God's love for us and expressing selfless love for others. In light of the Christian understanding of marriage as an authenticーindeed, the ordinaryーpath to holiness, Skudlarek proposes a demythologized view of celibacy, presenting it as an alternate and equally valid spiritual practice for those who choose not to accept the demands of a committed sexual relationship. Drawing on the monastic interreligious dialogue, Skudlarek considers the Buddhist view of celibacy, which is not mythologized as a response to a divine call or as a superhuman way of life. He examines their regard for it as simplyーand profoundlyーa path to freedom, peace, and happiness. As Christians become aware of the benefits of celibacy for monks who observe it without reference to the Gospel, they may be able to appreciate all the more its importance and value for those who wish to follow Christ as celibates, and in this way come to share in the freedom of the children of God.

|

This carefully crafted ebook: "Edwin Arnold: Premium Poetry Collection" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) was an English poet and journalist, who is most known for his work, The Light of Asia. The literary task which he set before him was the interpretation in English verse of the life and philosophy of the East. His chief work with this object is The Light of Asia, which was translated into various languages such as Hindi. The Light of Asia, subtitled The Great Renunciation, is in a form of a narrative poem. The book endeavors to describe the life and time of Prince Gautama Siddhartha, who after attaining enlightenment became The Buddha, The Awakened One. The book presents his life, character, and philosophy, in a series of verses. It is a free adaptation of the Lalitavistara. A few decades before the book's publication, very little was known outside Asia about the Buddha and Buddhism, the religion which he founded, and which had existed for about twenty-five centuries. Arnold's book was one of the first successful attempts to popularize Buddhism for a Western readership. Marianne Dresser brings together the likes of Pema Chodron, Tsultrim Allione, and bell hooks, 30 women in all, who are doing just that. Writers, nuns, scholars, priests--even a martial arts master and a private investigator--discuss women in Buddhism in a range of essays. Several pieces question the suppression of emotion required for selflessness, appealing to the undeniable reality of day-to-day living. Others discuss their experiences as women in Buddhism, whether as nuns or as lay practitioners. Still others address the history of women in Buddhism, racial questions, meditation, poetry, compassion, social activism, and sexual orientation. Most of these writers have been in Buddhism for two or three decades and offer a wealth of experience and insights, targeted at women readers but no less valuable to men.

The Sound of Vultures' Wings The Tibetan Buddhist Ch?d Ritual Practice of the Female Buddha Machik Labdr?n【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey W. Cupchik ]

|

Explores the music of the Tibetan Ch?d tradition.

The Sound of Vultures' Wings offers the first in-depth exploration of the music of the Tibetan Ch?d tradition, which is based on the liturgical song-poems of the twelfth-century Tibetan female ascetic Machik Labdr?n (1055?1153). Ch?d is a musical-meditative Vajray?na method for cutting off the root of suffering, our mistaken view of a self. The Ch?d practitioner applies the antidote to self-cherishing by developing bodhicitta (altruistic awakening mind) and the antidote to self-grasping through the realization of the ultimate nature of reality: the correct view of emptiness. Ch?d is regarded by many Tibetan Lamas as one of the most effective Buddhist practices for spiritual and social transformation. Jeffrey W. Cupchik details the significance of the complex, interwoven performative aspects of this meditative ritual and explains how its practice can bring about experiences of insight and inner transformation. In doing so, he undoes the notion of meditation being exclusively an experience of silence and stillness.

Welcoming Beginner's Mind Zen and Tibetan Buddhist Wisdom on Experiencing Our True Nature【電子書籍】[ Gaylon Ferguson ]

|

This nuanced commentary on the famous Zen oxherding pictures explores the paradox of welcoming our true nature anew at each stage of spiritual unfolding.

Renowned for centuries, the classic Zen oxherding pictures vividly illustrate the stages of the spiritual journeyーfrom seeking and finding to ultimately forgetting the illusory self and awakening to our true nature. In his commentary on these images, Gaylon Ferguson guides us on an experiential path into these seeming contradictions through welcomingーthe simple, challenging, and always new possibility of opening to exactly what’s occurring in our experience. Distinct from meditation and mindfulness, this contemplative exercise leads us beyond spiritual bypassing (using spiritual practices to repress or avoid parts of ourselves) and spiritual materialism (practicing with a heavy sense of ego). Rich with teachings from the great Zen teacher and author of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, as well as extensive commentary from Tibetan meditation master Ch?gyam Trungpa Rinpoche and others who have illuminated the oxherding pictures, this book invites you into a process of spiritual maturation that never occurs elsewhere than here or other than now.

Featuring a foreword by David Chadwick, author of Crooked Cucumber: The Life and Zen Teaching of Shunryu Suzuki.
