Year of the Sheep: A Novel of the Highland Clearances【電子書籍】[ James Y. Bartlett ]

SCOTLAND 1805
The clan chief wants to remove the people living in the Highland glens and straths, replacing them with thousands of black-face Cheviot sheep and a few herders.
The people of the glens, who have lived there peacefully in their crofts and farms for hundreds of years, do not wish to go.

That was the essential conflict of the Highland Clearances, a dark and distressing time in Scottish history. But in Year of the Sheep, James Y. Bartlett’s sweeping retelling of the Clearances in Sutherland in Scotland’s far North, the conflict is even starker:

Both the clan chief and the people fighting back were women.

For Elizabeth Gordon, 19th chief of Clan Sutherland, replacing the people with the far more profitable sheepwalks only made economic sense.

But the women of Glencullen were desperate to save their way of life. Inspired by the village shaman and healer, the white witch known as Mute Meg; organized and encouraged by the schoolteacher Anna Kenton; and led by the ferocious example of the shape-shifting outlaw known as Billy Hanks, they decided to make a stand.

Based on actual events, Year of the Sheep is an epic novel that runs from the Battle of Culloden Moor through the chaotic events of the French Revolution in Paris; and from the gilded palaces of London to the rude huts of Glencullen, fated to disappear in the fires that helped extinguish a way of life that had lasted nearly a thousand years.

First published in 1985, A History of the Highland Clearances: Volume 2 explores the various types of communal and intellectual responses, contemporary and retrospective, to the experience of the clearances. The first section considers the legacy of the two hundred years’ debate about the Highland problem and the place of the clearances therein. The second section assesses the scale, range and timing of the emigrations of the Highlanders, as well as some of the motivations. The third section contemplates the direct popular response to the clearances, the collective memory and the tradition of physical resistance. The fourth section is about the career, trial and reputation of Patrick Sellar, which together embodied much of the social history, ruling ideas, and the necessary mythology of the clearances. The final section considers the fundamental economic problem of the Highlands in the age of the clearances, and the moral and economic alternatives that faced the community, the landlords, and the nation.

The Scottish Clearances A History of the Dispossessed, 1600-1900【電子書籍】[ T. M. Devine ]

'A superb book ... Anybody interested in Scottish history needs to read it' Andrew Marr, Sunday Times

Eighteenth-century Scotland is famed for generating many of the enlightened ideas which helped to shape the modern world. But there was in the same period another side to the history of the nation. Many of Scotland's people were subjected to coercive and sometimes violent change, as traditional ways of life were overturned by the 'rational' exploitation of land use. The Scottish Clearances is a superb and highly original account of this sometimes terrible process, which changed the Lowland countryside forever, as it also did, more infamously, the old society of the Highlands.

Based on a vast array of original sources, this pioneering book is the first to chart this tumultuous saga in one volume, with due attention to evictions and loss of land in both north and south of the Highland line. In the process, old myths are exploded and familiar assumptions undermined. With many fascinating details and the sense of an epic human story, The Scottish Clearances is an evocative memorial to all whose lives were irreparably changed in the interests of economic efficiency.

This is a story of forced clearance, of the destruction of entire communities and of large-scale emigration. Some winners were able to adapt and exploit the new opportunities, but there were also others who lost everything. The clearances created the landscape of Scotland today, but it came at a huge price.

The Dynamics of Heritage History, Memory and the Highland Clearances【電子書籍】[ Laurence Gouri?vidis ]

There has been much academic interest in the role of museums as places where understanding of the past is shaped and legitimised for a wide and increasingly diverse public. This book focuses on the museum representations of the Highland Clearances - a much neglected aspect of one of the most disputed and politically-charged issues in modern Scottish history. Drawing together a range of inter-disciplinary themes and notions, it considers the cultural legacy of the period, brings to light the socially and historically conditioned meanings and values encapsulated in museum narratives of the Clearances, and shows the significance of collective memory in the negotiations inherent in heritage work. Examining both national and local museums in Scotland and concluding with comparisons with Australian museums of migration, Dynamics of Heritage contributes to our understanding of the processes of heritage construction, and its relationship to issues of memory and other modes of engagement with the past.

The Highland Clearances【電子書籍】[ John Prebble ]

In the terrible aftermath of the moorland battle of Culloden, the Highlanders suffered at the hands of their own clan chiefs. Following his magnificent reconstruction of Culloden, John Prebble recounts how the Highlanders were deserted and then betrayed into famine and poverty. While their chiefs grew rich on meat and wool, the people died of cholera and starvation or, evicted from the glens to make way for sheep, were forced to emigrate to foreign lands.

‘Mr Prebble tells a terrible story excellently. There is little need to search further to explain so much of the sadness and emptiness of the northern Highlands today’ The Times.

Bearing the People Away The Portable Highland Clearances Companion【電子書籍】[ June Skinner Sawyers ]

The Highland Clearances generally refers to the eviction of indigenous Gaelic-speaking people of the Scottish Highlands and Islandsーroughly between 1790 and 1855ーto make way for more profitable cattle and sheep farms and, later, sporting estates. The blunt result of these evictions was that of a culture fundamentally altered if not destroyed. Many Highlanders emigrated to Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. A number of histories, novels, poems, plays, memoirs and songs have been written about the Clearances. In recent years some scholars have minimized the impact, referring to the historical accounts as being hyperbolic, an exaggeration fuelled by anger as much as by wishful nostalgia. Others maintain that the Clearances were an inevitable part of economic history and a necessary, if painful, consequence of progress. It is a story about a particular subset of people in a particular area of a small northern nation, but it is also the larger story of the not-always-noble state of the human conditionーthe strong overwhelm the weak with their resources, their power and their ambition. It is, in other words, a fundamentally human story and its casualty was peopleーnot just cold statistics on a sheet of paper, but flesh-and-blood human beings. The Clearancesーan iconic image and a conceptーis of deeply rooted and profound symbolic importance for Scots in the Highlands and in the global Scots diaspora. Bearing the People Away is the only one-volume companion to one of the most defining moments in Scottish, and indeed, British history. Part reference guide, part handbook, part travel guide and part resource, Bearing the People Away uses an encyclopedia format geared toward the general reader. The entries vary in length from brief sentences to several pages. They include major Clearances sites, major and minor figures associated with the Clearances, Clearances-related sites outwith Scotland (Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, for example), places and historical events with Clearances and or Highland connections, and books, recordings and relevant museums and organizations identified with the Highland Clearances.
