Good-looking, kind-hearted Evelina Anville has grown up in rural obscurity as the ward of a country parson. At the age of seventeen, she begins her progress from provincial life to fashionable London ー a transition that's complicated by vulgar relatives and her own naivet?. Evelina's shrewd intelligence, however, perceives the hypocrisy behind the refined fa?ades as she learns to balance the honesty and simplicity of her upbringing with the sophisticated etiquette of high society.
Written in the form of letters, this 1778 novel offers an intimate look at coming-of-age among England's eighteenth-century upper crust. Evelina's comic misadventures provide a subtle commentary on some of the problems faced by her contemporaries, from women's limited roles to class snobbery and prejudice. Fanny Burney's witty approach to manners and mores was a significant influence on Jane Austen, and her deft combination of satire, sentimentality, and farce provides sparkling entertainment.

A story of initiation into the ways of the world for a young, provincial girl, Evelina is both richly comic and gravely moral. It is at once a guide to fashionable London, a satirical attack on the new consumerism, an investigation of women's position in the late eighteeenth century, and a love story. The new introduction and full notes to this edition make this richness all the more readily available to a modern reader. - ;'Lord Orville did me the honour to hand me to the coach, talking all the way of the honour I had done him! O these fashionable people!' Frances Burney's first and most enduringly popular novel is a vivid, satirical, and seductive account of the pleasures and dangers of fashionable life in late eighteenth-century London. As she describes her heroine's entry into society, womanhood and, inevitably, love, Burney exposes the vulnerability of female innocence in an image-conscious and often cruel world where social snobbery and sexual aggression are played out in the public arenas of pleasure-gardens, theatre visits, and balls. But Evelina's innocence also makes her a shrewd commentator on the excesses and absurdities of manners and social ambitions - as well as attracting the attention of the eminently eligible Lord Orville. Evelina, comic and shrewd, is at once a guide to fashionable London, a satirical attack on the new consumerism, an investigation of women's position in the late eighteenth century, and a love story. The new introduction and full notes to this edition help make this richness all the more readily available to a modern reader. -

Evelina is the daughter of an English aristocrat, but is brought up in the country until her seventeenth birthday, because she is of dubious birth and unacknowledged. Once out in London and Bristol-Hotwells, Evelina learns through a series of humorous events how to navigate society, and a nobleman falls in love with her.
Properly original, the new version of this essay intends both to nourish debate and differentiate points of view. In its new articulation, the book justifies work that has been carried out since. It justifies the sense of Franciscan rootedness that has never been denied and at the same time opens to the discovery of another reading of the Dominican Thomas Aquinas. The preface specially composed for this American edition, the opening debate with famous medievalist Etienne Gilson, and above all the afterword entitled “Saint Thomas Aquinas and the entrance of God into Philosophy” make it a radically new book.

Evelina; Or, the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World (Annotated)【電子書籍】[ Fanny Burney ]

|

Evelina or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World is a book composed by English author Fanny Burney and first published in 1778. Although published anonymously, its authorship was revealed by the poet George Huddesford in what Burney called a "vile poem."
In this 3-volume epistolary novel, title character Evelina is the unacknowledged, but legitimate daughter of a dissipated English aristocrat, thus raised in rural seclusion until her 17th year. Through a series of humorous events that take place in London and the resort town of Hotwells, near Bristol, Evelina learns to navigate the complex layers of 18th-century society and earn the love of a distinguished nobleman. This sentimental novel, which has notions of sensibility and early romanticism, satirizes the society in which it is set and is a significant precursor to the work of Jane Austen and Maria Edgeworth, whose novels explore many of the same issues.
This edition has been formatted for your reader, with an active table of contents. This work has also been annotated, with additional information about the book and its author, including an overview, plot summary, characters, release details, biographical and bibliographical information.

Jesus of Nazareth Holy Week: From the Entrance Into Jerusalem To The Resurrection【電子書籍】[ Pope Benedict XVI ]
|

For Christians, Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, who died for the sins of the world, and who rose from the dead in triumph over sin and death. For non-Christians, he is almost anything else--a myth, a political revolutionary, a prophet whose teaching was misunderstood or distorted by his followers.

Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, and no myth, revolutionary, or misunderstood prophet, insists Benedict XVI. He thinks that the best of historical scholarship, while it can't "prove" Jesus is the Son of God, certainly doesn't disprove it. Indeed, Benedict maintains that the evidence, fairly considered, brings us face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus--a real man who taught and acted in ways that were tantamount to claims of divine authority, claims not easily dismissed as lunacy or deception.

Benedict XVI presents this challenge in his new book, Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection, the sequel volume to Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration.

Why was Jesus rejected by the religious leaders of his day? Who was responsible for his death? Did he establish a Church to carry on his work? How did Jesus view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead and what does his resurrection mean? The story of Jesus raises many crucial questions.

Benedict brings to his study the vast learning of a brilliant scholar, the passionate searching of a great mind, and the deep compassion of a pastor's heart. In the end, he dares readers to grapple with the meaning of Jesus' life, teaching, death, and resurrection.

"Only in this second volume do we encounter the decisive sayings and events of Jesus' life . . . I hope that I have been granted an insight into the figure of Our Lord that can be helpful to all readers who seek to encounter Jesus and to believe in Him."
-Pope Benedict XVI

TO THE AUTHORS OF THE MONTHLY AND CRITICAL REVIEWS. GENTLEMEN, The liberty which I take in addressing to you the trifling production of a few idle hours, will doubtless move your wonder, and probably your contempt. I will not, however, with the futility of apologies, intrude upon your time, but briefly acknowledge the motives of my temerity; lest, by a premature exercise of that patience which I hope will befriend me, I should lessen its benevolence, and be accessary to my own condemnation. Without name, without recommendation, and unknown alike to success and disgrace, to whom can I so properly apply for patronage, as to those who publicly profess themselves Inspectors of all literary performances? The extensive plan of your critical observations,-which, not confined to works of utility or ingenuity, is equally open to those of frivolous amusement,-and, yet worse than frivolous, dullness,-encourages me to seek for your protection, since,-perhaps for my sins!-it intitles me to your annotations. To resent, therefore, this offering, however insignificant, would ill become the universality of your undertaking; though not to despise it may, alas! be out of your power

|

The Indians of Cape Flattery: At the Entrance to the Strait of Fuca, Washington Territory by James Gilchrist Swan is one of the earliest and most important ethnographic studies of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. First published in 1870 under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution, this pioneering work records in rich detail the life, customs, language, and beliefs of the Makah Nation of Neah Bay ー a maritime people whose culture was shaped by the sea and the rugged coast of the Olympic Peninsula.

Drawing upon years of residence among the Makah, Swan offers an intimate and respectful portrayal that bridges the gap between observer and participant. His chapters cover every aspect of community life: from hunting, fishing, and whaling to art, religion, and oral tradition. He documents their social organization, mythology, and ceremonial practices with rare sympathy, and his inclusion of Makah vocabulary and legends makes the book a cornerstone for later linguistic and anthropological study.

What makes The Indians of Cape Flattery enduringly valuable is Swan's sensitivity and precision. At a time when Indigenous cultures were often misrepresented, he approached his subjects as friends and equals, recording not curiosities but a living, dynamic people. His work preserves a culture on the cusp of enormous change ー offering modern readers both historical context and a deep appreciation of resilience and identity.

For readers of anthropology, Native studies, and Pacific Northwest history, this book remains an essential primary source ー a testament to early ethnography conducted with respect, accuracy, and enduring human insight.

Evelina Or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World【電子書籍】[ Frances Burney ]

Frances Burney's "Evelina" is a seminal work in the canon of 18th-century English literature, presenting an exquisite exploration of the complexities of female identity, social class, and the intricacies of romantic entanglement. The novel employs an epistolary format, allowing readers to intimately experience the protagonist's thoughts and feelings as she navigates her way through the treacherous waters of London society. Burney's prose is characterized by its wit and keen psychological insight, reflecting the societal norms of her time while also subverting them, making "Evelina" not merely a coming-of-age story but a thematic critique of gender and virtue. Frances Burney, a pioneer among female novelists, lived in an era where women's voices were often marginalized. Burney's own experiences within London's high society deeply influenced her writing, as she witnessed the tensions of class and gender firsthand. Known for her sharp observations and nuanced characters, she drew inspiration from her personal life, familial relationships, and societal expectations, which are vividly portrayed in "Evelina". Her subsequent influence on later authors, including Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf, solidifies her literary significance. I wholeheartedly recommend "Evelina" to readers interested in the evolution of the novel and the representation of women's lives in literature. Burney's dual mastery of social commentary and character development provides a rich tapestry that captures the essence of the 18th-century woman's plight, making it an essential read for scholars and casual readers alike.

Howells proclaimed, “the heart of girlhood had never been so fully opened in literature.” Samuel Johnson called Burney “a real wonder” and Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote, “We owe to [Burney], not only Evelina, Cecilia, and Camilla, but also Mansfield Park and The Absentee.”

Mildred Aldrich was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1853. After graduating from Everett High School in 1872, she taught elementary school in Boston, Massachusetts.
Aldrich began her career as a journalist with the Boston Home Journal and later contributed to Arena and the Boston Herald. For a short period in 1892, she also edited the magazine, The Mahogany Tree.
In 1898, Aldrich moved to France and while living in Paris became a close friend of Gertrude Stein. Aldrich worked as a foreign correspondent and newspaper critic until retiring to Huiry, a village on the outskirts of Paris. She wrote to Stein in June 1914: "It will be the bloodiest affair the world has ever seen - a war in the air, under the sea as well as on it, and carried out with the most effective man-slaughtering machines ever used in battle."
During the First World War, Aldrich wrote A Hilltop on the Marne (1915), a book based on her journal entries (3rd June - 8th September 1914) and on letters she wrote to Gertrude Stein. The book sold well in the United States and she followed it with On the Edge of the War Zone (1917), The Peak of the Load (1918) and When Johnny Comes Marching Home (1919).
The French government believed that Aldrich's work helped persuade the US government to declare war on Germany and in 1922 was awarded the Legion of Honour.
Mildred Aldrich died in Huiry, France, on 19th February, 1928.
Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London: Constable, 1919.
Original Page Count ? 245 pages.

But with the arrival of her eighteenth year comes the time for her formal debut, whether or not sheーor Londonーis ready. Still, landing a man in the city won't be easy . . .

This epistolary novel was the first by satirist Fanny Burney, acclaimed for her talent for comic fiction as well as her diaries chronicling eighteenth-century life among the aristocracy, in particular the struggles of women.
