The Fragility of Goodness Luck and Ethics in Greek Tragedy and Philosophy【電子書籍】[ Martha C. Nussbaum ]
|

This book is a study of ancient views about 'moral luck'. It examines the fundamental ethical problem that many of the valued constituents of a well-lived life are vulnerable to factors outside a person's control, and asks how this affects our appraisal of persons and their lives. The Greeks made a profound contribution to these questions, yet neither the problems nor the Greek views of them have received the attention they deserve. This book thus recovers a central dimension of Greek thought and addresses major issues in contemporary ethical theory. One of its most original aspects is its interrelated treatment of both literary and philosophical texts. The Fragility of Goodness has proven to be important reading for philosophers and classicists, and its non-technical style makes it accessible to any educated person interested in the difficult problems it tackles. This edition, first published in 2001, features a preface by Martha Nussbaum.

In 'The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth,' Thomas Jefferson presents a unique synthesis of the Gospels, meticulously distilling the essence of Jesus's teachings while omitting supernatural elements incongruent with Enlightenment ideals. Jefferson's literary style reflects a rationalist approach, exhibiting clarity and precision, as he seeks to reveal the moral philosophy underpinning Christianity. This work emerges from the broader context of the early 19th-century American Enlightenment, where reason and empirical evidence began to take precedence over traditional dogma, highlighting Jefferson's commitment to reasoned faith and a secular morality informed by the teachings of Jesus. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and a pivotal figure in the American Enlightenment, was profoundly influenced by Enlightenment thought and his personal interpretations of religion. His distaste for organized religion and fervent belief in reason prompted him to isolate what he deemed the true moral teachings of Jesus, resulting in a text that serves as both a personal manuscript and a public statement on the vitality of ethical principles devoid of superstition. This book is not simply a theological text; it invites readers to engage with the ethical core of Christianity through an Enlightenment lens. Scholars, theologians, and casual readers alike will find Jefferson's work a unique exploration of Jesus's moral teachings, rendering it a thought-provoking addition to discussions of religion, philosophy, and ethics in contemporary society.

A History of Greek Mathematics, Volume II From Aristarchus to Diophantus【電子書籍】[ Sir Thomas Heath ]
|

"As it is, the book is indispensable; it has, indeed, no serious English rival." ー Times Literary Supplement
"Sir Thomas Heath, foremost English historian of the ancient exact sciences in the twentieth century." ー Prof. W. H. Stahl
"Indeed, seeing that so much of Greek is mathematics, it is arguable that, if one would understand the Greek genius fully, it would be a good plan to begin with their geometry."
The perspective that enabled Sir Thomas Heath to understand the Greek genius ー deep intimacy with languages, literatures, philosophy, and all the sciences ー brought him perhaps closer to his beloved subjects, and to their own ideal of educated men than is common or even possible today. Heath read the original texts with a critical, scrupulous eye and brought to this definitive two-volume history the insights of a mathematician communicated with the clarity of classically taught English.
"Of all the manifestations of the Greek genius none is more impressive and even awe-inspiring than that which is revealed by the history of Greek mathematics." Heath records that history with the scholarly comprehension and comprehensiveness that marks this work as obviously classic now as when it first appeared in 1921. The linkage and unity of mathematics and philosophy suggest the outline for the entire history. Heath covers in sequence Greek numerical notation, Pythagorean arithmetic, Thales and Pythagorean geometry, Zeno, Plato, Euclid, Aristarchus, Archimedes, Apollonius, Hipparchus and trigonometry, Ptolemy, Heron, Pappus, Diophantus of Alexandria and the algebra. Interspersed are sections devoted to the history and analysis of famous problems: squaring the circle, angle trisection, duplication of the cube, and an appendix on Archimedes's proof of the subtangent property of a spiral. The coverage is everywhere thorough and judicious; but Heath is not content with plain exposition: It is a defect in the existing histories that, while they state generally the contents of, and the main propositions proved in, the great treatises of Archimedes and Apollonius, they make little attempt to describe the procedure by which the results are obtained. I have therefore taken pains, in the most significant cases, to show the course of the argument in sufficient detail to enable a competent mathematician to grasp the method used and to apply it, if he will, to other similar investigations.
Mathematicians, then, will rejoice to find Heath back in print and accessible after many years. Historians of Greek culture and science can renew acquaintance with a standard reference; readers in general will find, particularly in the energetic discourses on Euclid and Archimedes, exactly what Heath means by impressive and awe-inspiring.

Chain of Gold Greek Rhetoric in the Roman Empire【電子書籍】[ Susan C. Jarratt ]
|

Barred from political engagement and legal advocacy, the second sophists composed and performed epideictic works for audiences across the Mediterranean world during the early centuries of the Common Era. In a wide-ranging study, author Susan C. Jarratt argues that these artfully wrought discourses, formerly considered vacuous entertainments, constitute intricate negotiations with the absolute power of the Roman Empire. Positioning culturally Greek but geographically diverse sophists as colonial subjects, Jarratt offers readings that highlight ancient debates over free speech and figured discourse, revealing the subtly coded commentary on Roman authority and governance embedded in these works.

Through allusions to classical Greek literature, sophists such as Dio Chrysostom, Aelius Aristides, and Philostratus slipped oblique challenges to empire into otherwise innocuous works. Such figures protected their creators from the danger of direct confrontation but nonetheless would have been recognized by elite audiences, Roman and Greek alike, by virtue of their common education. Focusing on such moments, Jarratt presents close readings of city encomia, biography, and texts in hybrid genres from key second sophistic figures, setting each in its geographical context. Although all the authors considered are male, the analyses here bring to light reflections on gender, ethnicity, skin color, language differences, and sexuality, revealing an underrecognized diversity in the rhetorical activity of this period.
While US scholars of ancient rhetoric have focused largely on the pedagogical, Jarratt brings a geopolitical lens to her study of the subject. Her inclusion of fourth-century textsーthe Greek novel Ethiopian Story, by Heliodorus, and the political orations of Libanius of Antiochーextends the temporal boundary of the period. She concludes with speculations about the pressures brought to bear on sophistic political subjectivity by the rise of Christianity and with ruminations on a third sophistic in ancient and contemporary eras of empire.

|

Originally published in 1956, this is a critical analysis of the comedies of Aristophanes and Menander studied in the context of the history of comedy, of the allied arts, and of contemporary life.

Aristophanes and Menander are deservedly the most famous writers of Greek comedy. The extant comedies of Aristophanes are notable for wit, comical action, beautiful poetry, and the dramatization of such problems as health of mind and body, sex, money, government, law, religion, education, and drama, music and poetry. Menander portrays with delicate and sympathetic understanding a world in which the seeming evils of loss and discord eventually lead to the genuine goods of discovery and concord. The art of Aristophanes is critically examined in three chapters and that of Menander in one.

For centuries Dionysos had been worshipped in a spirit of ecstasy which manifested itself in song, dance and the wearing of masks and costumes, pantomime, farce, and satire. The processes by which these diverse elements were developed and fused into the complex literary form of Old Comedy are the subject of the first three chapters.

Aristophanes was not only pre-eminent as a writer of Old Comedy; he also participated in the transformation of Old Comedy into Middle Comedy, a curious and interesting dramatic form which is fully treated in the seventh chapter. In the last chapter the emergence of New Comedy is traced and the art of Menander criticized. The book ends with a brief indication of the various forms in which the spirit of Greek comedy had survived to the present day.

Euripides' poignant tragedy, "The Iphigenia in Tauris," intricately weaves themes of sacrifice, identity, and human agency within the war-torn tapestry of Greek mythology. The play employs a distinctive blend of dramatic irony and emotional depth, revolving around Iphigenia, who, after being rescued from her sacrificial fate, finds herself entangled in a fierce struggle for family loyalty and personal autonomy in a foreign land. Euripides skillfully employs lyrical dialogue and a rich tableau of character development that challenges the rigid gender expectations of ancient Greece and offers profound commentary on the human condition amidst the fervor of fate and divinity. Euripides, one of the most innovative playwriters of Classical Athens, sought to challenge traditional narratives and explore the complexities of human emotions and motivations. His tumultuous life, marked by personal tragedies and a vivid engagement with the socio-political landscape of his time, deeply informed his theatrical creations. His pioneering approach influenced the evolution of drama, moving away from mythological conventions to portray more relatable, psychologically nuanced characters. This compelling work deserves a place on every scholar's shelf, beckoning those interested in the intersections of mythology, ethics, and feminism. Latin Grammarians on the Latin Accent The Transformation of Greek Grammatical Thought【電子書籍】[ Philomen Probert ]
|

Latin Grammarians on the Latin Accent offers a fresh perspective on a long-standing debate about the value of Latin grammarians writing about the Latin accent: should the information they give us be taken seriously, or should much of it be dismissed as copied mindlessly from Greek sources? This book focusses on understanding the Latin grammarians on their own terms: what they actually say about accents, and what they mean by it. Careful examination of Greek and Latin grammatical texts leads to a better understanding of the workings of Greek grammatical theory on prosody, and of its interpretation in the Latin grammatical tradition. It emerges that Latin grammarians took over from Greek grammarians a system of grammatical description that operated on two levels: an abstract level that we are not supposed to be able to hear, and the concrete level of audible speech. The two levels are linked by a system of rules. Some points of Greek thought on prosody were taken over onto the abstract level and not intended as statements about the actual sound of Latin, while other points were so intended. While this book largely sets aside the question whether the Latin grammarians tell us the truth about the Latin accent, focussing instead on understanding what they actually say, it begins to offer answers for those wishing to know when to 'believe' Latin grammarians in the traditional sense: the book shows which of their statements are intended - and which are not intended - as statements about the actual sound of Latin.
