Aristotle on Women Physiology, Psychology, and Politics【電子書籍】[ Sophia M. Connell ]

This Element provides an account of Aristotle on women which combines what is found in his scientific biology with his practical philosophy. Scholars have often debated how these two fields are related. The current study shows that according to Aristotelian biology, women are set up for intelligence and tend to be milder-tempered than men. Thus, women are not curtailed either intellectually or morally by their biology. The biological basis for the rule of men over women is women's lack of spiritedness. Aristotle's Politics must be read with its audience in mind; there is a need to convince men of the importance of avoiding insurrection both in the city and the household. While their spiritedness gives men the upper hand, they are encouraged to listen to the views of free women in order to achieve the best life for all.

Contemporary Italian Women Philosophers Stretching the Art of Thinking【

Gathering the contributions of eleven contemporary Italian women thinkers who share a philosophical practice, Contemporary Italian Women Philosophers embraces a general interrelationality, fluidity, and overlapping of concepts for a border-crossing that affects what it means to be subjects that are embodied and participants in the life of their communities, thereby shaping a sense of belonging. Common threads are revealed through the exploration of radically diverse themes (the body, subjectivity, power, freedom, equality, liberation, the emotions, symbolism and metaphors, maternity, reproduction, responsibility, the political, the economic) and approaches (autobiographical styles, personal narratives, rootedness in the everyday, advancement of relationality, empathic responsibility, passions, and commitment to the flourishing of the polis). In their differences, these previously unpublished essays give the reader a glimpse of the fecund and articulated philosophical work of women in the Italian contextーa context which has not been and still is not always benign toward women's distinctive originality and creativity.

Millie Acevedo bore her first child before the age of 16 and dropped out of high school to care for her newborn. Now 27, she is the unmarried mother of three and is raising her kids in one of Philadelphia's poorest neighborhoods. Would she and her children be better off if she had waited to have them and had married their father first? Why do so many poor American youth like Millie continue to have children before they can afford to take care of them?

Over a span of five years, sociologists Kathryn Edin and Maria Kefalas talked in-depth with 162 low-income single moms like Millie to learn how they think about marriage and family. Promises I Can Keep offers an intimate look at what marriage and motherhood mean to these women and provides the most extensive on-the-ground study to date of why they put children before marriage despite the daunting challenges they know lie ahead.

Any woman who dares to reveal her messy side has been treated as a cautionary tale. Today, unlikeable female characters are everywhere in film, TV, and wider pop culture. For the first time ever, they are being accepted by audiences and even showered with industry awards. We are finally accepting that women areーgaspーfully fledged human beings. How did we get to this point?

Unlikeable Female Characters traces the evolution of highly memorable female characters, examining what exactly makes them popular, how audiences have reacted to them, and the ways in which pop culture is finally allowing us to celebrate the complexities of being a woman. Anna Bogutskaya, film programmer, broadcaster, and co-founder of the horror film collective and podcast The Final Girls, takes us on a journey through popular film, TV, and music, looking at the nuances of womanhood on and off-screen to reveal whether pop cultureーand societyーis finally ready to embrace complicated women.

Praise for Unlikeable Female Characters:

"Fascinating, insightful, and kick-ass." ーEmma Jane Unsworth, internationally bestselling author of Grown Ups and Animals

"Beautifully written." ーChelsea G. Women Psychotherapists' Reflections on Female Friendships Sisters of the Heart【電子書籍】

Psychologists, as well as the general public, have recognized the importance of female friendships. Scientists call this bond the tending instinct- a kind of female relaxation response that has salutary effects. Such special attachment shields women from isolation and provides an enhanced sense of wellbeing. Intimate friends can therefore act as sisters of the heart to promote connection, solace, wholeness, and longevity. Moreover, women friends frequently provide emotional, social, physical, and spiritual benefits. Indeed, sisters of the heart constitute an unparalleled bond that encourages women to connect with themselves, with others, and with the world at large. In this book, twelve women therapists, who are diverse in age-- young, middle, and older women; as well as in ethnicity--White, African American, Latina, Asian American, Native American, and multiracial women---examine the psychological and physical aspects of this unique female bonding. Through their narratives we hear their distinctive voices as women and as healers. In this fashion, they reflect on both the functional and dysfunctional dynamics occurring between intimate female friends. Finally, these women therapists examine how their experience with a sister of the heart informed their development as healers, and discuss how they use this special bond in psychotherapy with women.

This book was originally published as a special issue of Women & Therapy.

'This enlightening, iconic book is for anyone who wants to understand more about the powerful roles of friendshipsーincluding challenges--among women that facilitate their ability to survive and thrive. It is special in that the chapter authors are psychotherapists who describe the impact of female bonding, from scientific as well as personal bases. The descriptions are rooted in theory, research, extensive clinical experience and personal lives. Refreshing and much needed, this book will prove useful to professionals as well as any women or men who want to understand the value and salience of female relationships.'

Melba Vasquez, PhD, ABPP

Past President, American Psychological Association

Independent Practice, Austin, Texas

Korean Women Philosophers and the Ideal of a Female Sage Essential Writings of Im Yungjidang and Gang Jeongildang【電子書籍】[ Philip J. Ivanhoe ]

Korean Women Philosophers and the Ideal of a Female Sage introduces the lives and ideas of two female Korean Confucian philosophers from the late Joseon Dynasty (18th-19th century), Im Yunjidang (1721-1793) and Gang Jeongildang (1772-1832), examining how their writings contribute to contemporary philosophical inquiry. Both philosophers are known for arguing that women are as capable as men of attaining the highest forms of intellectual and moral achievement and thereby can become female sages (yeoseong), with their reasoning building on distinctively Confucian philosophical claims about the original, pure moral nature shared by all human beings. Hwa Yeong Wang and Philip J. Ivanhoe provide an analysis of the social, political, and historical factors that surrounded these women and informed their writing. This volume explores how these female philosophers navigated the challenges presented by the extensively patriarchal culture in which they lived. Im Yunjidang and Gang Jeongildang's resistance and response to the patriarchal context of late Joseon society informs the content and style of their writing, producing original philosophical ideas that remain of great value to the field today. By providing elegant English translations, thorough annotations, and analysis of the cultural and historical context of these writings, Wang and Ivanhoe provide a nuanced, informative, and invaluable look at the work of these two notable Korean female philosophers. This volume is certain to appeal to readers across the areas of Women's Studies, Philosophy, East Asian Studies, Literature, and more, diversifying the current canon and providing perspectives on philosophy that have for far too long been overlooked.

Jo, Rey and Other Strong (But Lonely) Female Characters Little Women Podcast Transcripts, #3【電子書籍】[ Fairychamber ]

What makes Little Women interesting is that Jo doesn't start as a feminist. To be honest, I don't think anyone starts as a feminist. She's quite a misogynistic character for most of the book series and when she becomes more influenced by her sisters and Friedrich, she becomes more feminist. When Jo is with Laurie, they both treat women like objects, but when Jo is with Fritz, she begins to treat other women a lot better, because he does, and the same happens with Laurie when he's with Amy. I always enjoy our discussions with Emily. This time we'll be talking about the portrayal of female characters in the media. Little Women Podcast is an ongoing series of video essays, articles and podcast episodes that examines the intersections in Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women.
Hosted by Alcott essayist Niina Niskanen. Regular visits from literal scholars and Little Women fans. This time Emily and Niina are discussing the portrayal of strong female characters in the media, and when did loneliness become a mark of being strong. Also discussing Louisa May Alcott´s own loneliness and her search for love and acceptance.

The cunning, manipulative, and utterly dominant female of the East is the subject of these two works from Harland Emerson and Rafael Menton.

Mr Emersion opens with “Obsessed in Thailand”, in which, after being divorced for cheating, and left with a neck-problem when the husband of the colleague with whom he cheated lays a beating on him, Matt Arondsen is advised by his boss and female friend to visit the Asian massage centre that helped cure her husband’s own neck and back problems. Matt is dubious but signs-up for treatment with a therapist. And, in the process, adds fuel to the fall from grace kick-started by the end of his marriage… For the therapists at the centre calling itself “Thailand Bliss” ? and one in particular - have unusual gifts likely to create dependence and obsession in certain clients… Clients of whom Matt is DEFINITLY one.

Our next fall from grace comes courtesy of Rafael Menton and “Mistress From Pakistan”, as we are taken into the world of a young widow from Faisalabad living in the English Home-Counties. A young woman with a long-held and very specific fantasy. A fantasy her older and housebound Internet mentor back in her homeland is determined to help her make reality. Help that may be good news for her, but not so good for the divorced Englishman currently employed as her live-in handyman… More, in fact, like a long-term sentence of domestic and sexual service… Even if it is eventually given willingly.

Harland Emerson is the pen-name of a former West Point graduate and software-developer out of Delaware with a passion for the East, its women, and its culture ? and in that order. Rafael Menton is a UK-based Professor of English Literature with a retro passion for the early to mid-twentieth-century fiction of mystery, crime, suspense, and horror & romance with erotic female-led undertones.

ALL CHARACTERS ARE OVER 18 AND OF CONSENTING AGE AND THIS WORK OF FICTION CONTAINS NO RAPE INCEST OR BESTIALITY.

How to Think Like a Woman Four Women Philosophers Who Taught Me How to Love the Life of the Mind【電子書籍】[ Regan Penaluna ]

As a young woman growing up in a small, religious community, Regan Penaluna daydreamed about the big questions: Who are we and what is this strange world we find ourselves in? In college she discovered philosophy and fell in love with its rationality, its abstractions, its beauty.
What Penaluna didn't realize was that philosophy - at least the canon that's taught in Western universities, as well as the culture that surrounds it - would slowly grind her down through its devaluation of women and their minds. Women were nowhere in her curriculum, and feminist philosophy was dismissed as marginal, unserious.
Until Penaluna came across the work of a seventeenth-century woman named Damaris Cudworth Masham. Reading Masham's work was like reaching through time: writing three hundred years ago, Masham was speaking directly to her about knowledge and God, but also the condition of women. Her work eventually led Penaluna to other remarkable women philosophers of the era: Mary Astell, Catharine Cockburn and Mary Wollstonecraft.
Together these women rekindled Penaluna's love of philosophy and taught her how to live a truly philosophical life. She combines memoir with biography to tell the stories of these four women, weaving throughout an alternative history of philosophy as well as her own search for beauty and truth. Formally inventive and keenly intelligent, How to Think Like a Woman is a moving meditation on what philosophy could look like if women were treated equally.

From a bold new voice in nonfiction, an exhilarating account of the lives and works of influential 17th and 18th century feminist philosophers Mary Wollstonecraft and her predecessors who have been written out of history, and a searing look at the author’s experience of patriarchy and sexism in academia

As a young woman growing up in small-town Iowa, Regan Penaluna daydreamed about the big questions: Who are we and what is this strange world we find ourselves in? In college she fell in love with philosophy and chose to pursue it as an academician, the first step, she believed, to becoming a self-determined person living a life of the mind. What Penaluna didn’t realize was that the Western philosophical canon taught in American universities, as well as the culture surrounding it, would slowly grind her down through its misogyny, its harassment, its devaluation of women and their intellect. Where were the women philosophers?

One day, in an obscure monograph, Penaluna came across Damaris Cudworth Masham’s name. The daughter of philosopher Ralph Cudworth and a contemporary of John Locke, Masham wrote about knowledge and God, and the condition of women. Masham’s work led Penaluna to other remarkable women philosophers of the era: Mary Astell, who moved to London at age twenty-one and made a living writing philosophy; Catharine Cockburn, a philosopher, novelist, and playwright; and the better-known Mary Wollstonecraft, who wrote extensively in defense of women’s minds. Together, these women rekindled Penaluna’s love of philosophy and awakened her feminist consciousness.

In How to Think Like a Woman, Regan Penaluna blends memoir, biography, and criticism to tell the stories of these four women, weaving throughout an alternative history of philosophy as well as her own search for love and truth. THE POWER OF WOMAN What Makes Women Powerful,【電子書籍】[ James M. Martey ]

Women's power is to defeat violence, overcome poverty and injustice, and improve life for everyone by fighting for a global understanding of love, justice, creativity, and empowerment. It is not about burning bras or entering fields most men don't fancy doing (though I do like that idea!). It is not about being different but the same as our male counterparts. Perspective and a global understanding separate us from the feminist movements of old. If we look honestly at women's and men's roles in society, we can see that differences are more based on culture and customs than anything else. While some women feel alienated by their traditional role in society, most cultures open doors for their women regarding education, career choice, and political participation

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: The Illuminating Diary of a Professional Lady【電子書籍】[ Anita Loos ]

A gentleman friend and I were dining at the Ritz last evening and he said that if I took a pencil and a paper and put down all of my thoughts it would make a book. This almost made me smile as what it would really make would be a whole row of encyclopediacs. I mean I seem to be thinking practically all of the time. I mean it is my favorite recreation and sometimes I sit for hours and do not seem to do anything else but think. So this gentleman said a girl with brains ought to do something else with them besides think. And he said he ought to know brains when he sees them, because he is in the senate and he spends quite a great deal of time in Washington, d. c., and when he comes into contract with brains he always notices it. So it might have all blown over but this morning he sent me a book. And so when my maid brought it to me, I said to her, “Well, Lulu, here is another book and we have not read half the ones we have got yet.” But when I opened it and saw that it was all a blank I remembered what my gentleman acquaintance said, and so then I realized that it was a diary. So here I am writing a book instead of reading one. But now it is the 16th of March and of course it is to late to begin with January, but it does not matter as my gentleman friend, Mr. Eisman, was in town practically all of January and February, and when he is in town one day seems to be practically the same as the next day. I mean Mr. Eisman is in the wholesale button profession in Chicago and he is the gentleman who is known practically all over Chicago as Gus Eisman the Button King. And he is the gentleman who is interested in educating me, so of course he is always coming down to New York to see how my brains have improved since the last time. But when Mr. Eisman is in New York we always seem to do the same thing and if I wrote down one day in my diary, all I would have to do would be to put quotation marks for all other days. I mean we always seem to have dinner at the Colony and see a show and go to the Trocadero and then Mr. Eisman shows me to my apartment. So of course when a gentleman is interested in educating a girl, he likes to stay and talk about the topics of the day until quite late, so I am quite fatigued the next day and I do not really get up until it is time to dress for dinner at the Colony.
