"The Unification of Italy in 1870 heralded a period of unprecedented change. While successive Liberal governments pursued imperial ventures and took Italy into World War One on the Allied side, on the domestic front technological advance, the creation of a national transport network, the expansion of state education, internal migration to cities and the rise of political associations all contributed to the rapid expansion of the print industry and the development of new and highly diversified reading publics. Drawing on publishers'archives, letters, diaries, and printed material, this book provide the most up-to-date research into the printed media - books, magazines and journals - in Italy between 1870 and 1914. With essays on publishers and reading communities, the professionalization of the role of journalist and writer, children's literature, book illustrations, and printed media in colonial territories among others, this book is intended for those with interests in cultural production and consumption and questions of nation-formation and nationhood in and outside Italy. Life Writings I Printed Writings 1641?1700: Series II, Part One, Volume 1【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Skerpan-Wheeler ]

Early modern men and women represented their lives very differently from twentieth-century autobiographers, sharing none of the current preoccupation with individuality and the unique self. The writers represented in this two-volume collection sought connections between particular events in their lives and the larger pattern of Christian salvation. The texts reproduced here are united in the way they interconnect personal experiences and feelings with scriptural passages in an attempt to understand daily life in spiritual terms. Almost all the women whose works appear in these volumes would have been considered religious radicals by their contemporaries. Living through the turbulent times of the English Revolution (1642-1660) it is unsurprising that their life writings are marked by a sense of persecution. Many of them spent time in prison: Katherine Evans, Sarah Cheevers and Barbara Blaugdane were all imprisoned for preaching the faith of The Society of Friends, while Mary Rowlandson spent several months as a captive of North American Indians. In her introduction to these writings, Elizabeth Skerpan-Wheeler provides brief biographical sketches of these writers, together with details of the publication history of each text. With the exception of Rowlandson's works, the writings in these volumes are the first complete, unabridged editions in modern times.

The Poets, Isabella Whitney, Anne Dowriche, Elizabeth Melville [Colville], Aemilia Lanyer, Rachel Speght, Diane Primrose and Anne, Mary and Penelope Grey Printed Writings 1500?1640: Series I, Part Two, Volume 10【電子書籍】[ Betty S. Travitsky ]

Isabella Whitney is the earliest Englishwoman known to have written original secular poetry in English for publication. The Copy of a Letter contains four poems written in the personae of persons jilted in love. The only known copy of this volume is held at the Bodleian Library and is reproduced here. Whitney’s second collection A Sweet Nosgay contains poetry in traditional stanzas and in prose format. Reproduced here is the unique copy held at the British Library. The French Historie by Anne Dowriche takes as its subject three events from the religious wars in France: the affair of the Rue St Jacques (1557); the Martyrdom of Annas Burgeus (1559) and the St Bartholomew’s Massacre (1572). Her work takes as its source Thomas Tymme’s The Three Partes of Commentaries, Containing the whole and perfect discourse of the Civill warres in Fraunce (1574). We reproduce here the fine copy of The French Historie held at the Huntington Library and also append two short poems thought to be hers. Ane Godlie Dreame, Compylit in Scottish Meter is Elizabeth Melville’s first person account of a pilgrim who is guided through the afterworld. While many of the variations in the different editions are merely accidental, there are some substantial changes. As an aid to bibliographic study of the poem therefore, copies of the following four editions are reproduced here: 1603 National Library of Scotland; 1604 National Library of Scotland; 1606 Huntington Library; 1620 British Library. Aemilia Lanyer was the first woman writing in English to produce a substantial volume of poetry designed to be printed and to attract patrongage. The Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum was published in 1611 and contains a series of poems to individual patrons, two short prose dedications, a title poem on Christ’s passion and the first country house poem printed in English. The volume is arguably the first genuinely feminist publication in England: all its dedicatees are women and the poem on the passion argu

The Printed and the Built Architecture, Print Culture and Public Debate in the Nineteenth Century【

The Printed and the Built explores the intricate relationship between architecture and printed media in the fast-changing nineteenth century.

Publication history is a rapidly expanding scholarly field which has profoundly influenced architectural history in recent years. Yet, while groundbreaking work has been done on architecture and printing in the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the twentieth century, the nineteenth century has received little attention. This is the omission that The Printed and the Built seeks to address, thus filling a significant gap in the understanding of architecture's cultural history.

Lavishly illustrated with colourful and eclectic visual material, from panoramas to printed ephemera, adverts, penny magazines, early photography, and even crime reportage, The Printed and the Built consists of five in-depth thematic essays accompanied by 25 short pieces, each examining a particular printed form. Altogether, they illustrate how new genres communicated architecture to a mass audience, setting the stage for the modern architectural era.

'Eliza' Printed Writings 1641?1700: Series II, Part Two, Volume 3【電子書籍】[ Liam Semler ]

This facsimile edition reproduces the work titled Eliza's Babes which was first published in 1652. The volume comprises devotional and political verse and prose meditations. The poems cover a wide range of forms from verse epistles to poetic petitions, religious love lyrics to poems on earthly marriage, exultant poetic prayers to stern spiritual admonitions. The meditations are fine examples of the Puritan believer's plain-style response to various biblical texts, theological issues and political events. The text is historically and aesthetically unique. It reveals its anonymous author to be perhaps the first woman to publish substantial creative imitations of poems printed in George Herbert's The Temple (1633) and to rely upon and respond to Robert Herrick's Hesperides (1648). Eliza's Babes is a literary work of great originality. The narrator lives out her estate of salvation as an almost literally experienced marriage of election to Christ her Saviour. In a series of poems, 'Eliza' overcomes her initial shock and disappointment that her heavenly spouse has chosen an earthly partner for her, though this partner's prerogative is noticeably confined to the subservient role of facilitating his wife's heavenly marriage. The copy reproduced in this edition is the British Library text.

Read E-Books Faster! Printed and Virtual Text Speed Reading Manual【電子書籍】[ Petar Ivanov ]

This book is not for everyone. It is for people with ambitions who want to advance and perfect themselves as personalities, who seek and strive for Success, who are focused on their future and insist on achieving something more in their lives. It is intended only for people who love reading and it is something very important to them, a cherished life value. Yet, there is a considerable part of people, as it is well-known, for whom the precious and fascinating pursuits are other, different and distant from knowledge, intellect, wisdom, progress. The ones that read very little should be cunning and deceitful in order to show themselves as wise without being wise. This book is not intended for such people. Speed reading art mastering gives irrefutable advantages to people who are skilful at it to some degree, as two important objectives are achieved ? manifold increase of the reading speed of a given text for a unit of time and improvement of the comprehension of meaning and information from the read text. The people who use this manual and exert certain efforts could really learn how to read several times faster without hampering the comprehension and assimilation of the read text. There is no other sphere, in which so little efforts could lead to such big results, at that in many different areas ? from learning to business, from leisure pleasures to professional qualification, from self-improvement to cultural engagements, etc. If your profession or circumstances in your life require (necessitate) or make possible your frequent engagement in written texts, no matter what they are, then, with the assistance of this book, you could save some time of your life, and as we all know, time is the most precious thing for people. You could achieve for a short period the things, which those who cannot read fast would achieve long after you. That means that speed reading gains you time and advantage. In the long run, the result is money-making because it has been well-known for a long time that just like time is money, in the same way every advantage in this pragmatic world is cashed down (it makes money), regardless of anything. Early Tudor Translators: Margaret Beaufort, Margaret More Roper and Mary Basset Printed Writings 1500?1640: Series I, Part Two, Volume 4【電子書籍】[ Lee Cullen Khanna ]

This volume presents the texts of three Englishwomen remarkable both for writing and publishing their work during the first half of the sixteenth century. They also proved themselves nimble survivors of political and religious turmoil, Beaufort suffering for her Lancastrian connections and Roper and Basset for their Catholic allegiance. Significantly, these women turned to translation and to religious texts for their writing and publishing. The choice of devotional treatises authored by men not only mitigated the threat of the female pen, but more important to these writers, enabled them to perform spiritual and material work. Translation was considered to be the fruit of faith, contributing to the writer's own salvation and that of others, notably other women. Margaret Beaufort - Countess of Richmond and Derby, and mother of Henry VII. Lady Margaret's translation of the fourth book of Thomas ? Kempis' De imitatione Christi was the first in English. Published in 1504 with Books 1-3, translated by William Atkinson. We reprint Pynson's 1517 edition notable for the clarity of its texts and woodcuts. Her translation from a French version of the anonymous text Speculum aureum animae peccatricis was published by Pynson in about 1506. It was reprinted three times after her death, twice in 1522 and once in 1526. We reprint the 1526 edition held by the British Library. Margaret More Roper was the eldest child of Sir Thomas More and was said to have been an outstanding scholar and writer. Her only published work is the translation reproduced here - Erasmus: A devout treatise upon the Pater noster, published c.1526 by T. Berthelet Mary Roper Clarke Basset was the daughter of Margaret Roper. She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary and an expert in Latin and Greek.

Excerpt: "When we speak of the invention of printing, we mean the invention of the art of multiplying books by means of single types capable of being used again and again in different combinations for the printing of different books. Taking the word printing in its widest sense, it means merely the impression of any image; and the art of impressing or stamping words or pictures seems to have been known from the very earliest times. The handles of Greek amphor?, the bases of Roman lamps and vases, were often impressed with the maker's name, or other legend, by means of a stamp. This was the basis of the art, and Cicero (De Nat. Deorum, ii. 37) had suggested the combination of single letters into sentences. Quintilian refers to stencil plates as a guide to writing; and stamps with letters cut in relief were in common use amongst the Romans. The need for the invention, however, was not great, and it was never made. The first practical printing, both from blocks and mov[2]able type, was done in China. As early as a.d. 593 the more important texts were printed from engraved wooden plates by the order of the Emperor W?n-ti, and in the eleventh century printing from movable type was introduced by a certain smith named Picheng. The multiplicity of Chinese characters rendered the discovery of movable type of little economical value, and the older system of block printing has found favour even up to the present time. In the same way, Corea and Japan, though both had experimented with movable type, returned to their former custom of block printing."

The Printed Reader Gender, Quixotism, and Textual Bodies in Eighteenth-Century Britain【電子書籍】[ Amelia Dale ]

Shortlisted for the 2021 BARS First Book Prize (British Association for Romantic Studies)

The Printed Reader explores the transformative power of reading in the eighteenth century, and how this was expressed in the fascination with Don Quixote and in a proliferation of narratives about quixotic readers, readers who attempt to reproduce and embody their readings. Through intersecting readings of quixotic narratives, including work by Charlotte Lennox, Laurence Sterne, George Colman, Richard Graves, and Elizabeth Hamilton, Amelia Dale argues that literature was envisaged as imprintingーmost crucially, in gendered termsーthe reader’s mind, character, and body. The Printed Reader brings together key debates concerning quixotic narratives, print culture, sensibility, empiricism, book history, and the material text, connecting developments in print technology to gendered conceptualizations of quixotism. Tracing the meanings of quixotic readers’ bodies, The Printed Reader claims the social and political text that is the quixotic reader is structured by the experiential, affective, and sexual resonances of imprinting and impressions.

Published by Bucknell University Press. Elizabeth Cellier Printed Writings 1641?1700: Series II, Part Three, Volume 5【電子書籍】[ Mihoko Suzuki ]

Elizabeth Cellier, the scandalous celebrity known as the 'Popish midwife', became the focus of a large number of pamphlets in 1680: accounts of her two trials, her self-vindication, Malice Defeated, her opponent Thomas Dangerfield's rejoinder, and various anonymous satiric attacks against her. She was tried twice: the first time for the more serious charge of treason, and the second for libel, for publishing Malice Defeated. She was acquitted the first time, but found guilty the second, though her punishment was to be pilloried, not executed. She reemerges as the author of tracts on midwifery, proposing to James II the establishment of a professional guild of midwives. Her writings exhibit her remarkable determination to publish her accusations of judicial torture and her advocacy of the licensing of midwives as professional women, as well as exemplifying the importance of the printing press for enabling women to participate in the political public sphere.

Mary Schweidler, the Amber Witch: The Most Interesting Trial for Witchcraft Ever Known Printed From an Imperfect Manuscript by Her Father Abraham Schweidler the Pastor of Coserow in the Island of Usedom【電子書籍】[ Wilhelm Meinhold ]

In laying before the public this deeply affecting and romantic trial, which I have not without reason called on the title-page the most interesting of all trials for witchcraft ever known, I will first give some account of the history of the manuscript. At Coserow, in the Island of Usedom, my former cure, the same which was held by our worthy author some two hundred years ago, there existed under a seat in the choir of the church a sort of niche, nearly on a level with the floor. I had, indeed, often seen a heap of various writings in this recess; but owing to my short sight, and the darkness of the place, I had taken them for antiquated hymn-books, which were lying about in great numbers. But one day, while I was teaching in the church, I looked for a paper mark in the Catechism of one of the boys, which I could not immediately find; and my old sexton, who was past eighty (and who, although called Appelmann, was thoroughly unlike his namesake in our story, being a very worthy, although a most ignorant man), stooped down to the said niche, and took from it a folio volume which I had never before observed, out of which he, without the slightest hesitation, tore a strip of paper suited to my purpose, and reached it to me. I immediately seized upon the book, and, after a few minutes' perusal, I know not which was greater, my astonishment or my vexation at this costly prize. The manuscript, which was bound in vellum, was not only defective both at the beginning and at the end, but several leaves had even been torn out here and there in the middle. I scolded the old man as I had never done during the whole course of my life; but he excused himself, saying that one of my predecessors had given him the manuscript for waste paper, as it had lain about there ever since the memory of man, and he had often been in want of paper to twist round the altar candles, etc. The aged and half-blind pastor had mistaken the folio for old parochial accounts which could be of no more use to any one. No sooner had I reached home than I fell to work upon my new acquisition, and after reading a bit here and there with considerable trouble, my interest was powerfully excited by the contents. I soon felt the necessity of making myself better acquainted with the nature and conduct of these witch trials, with the proceedings, nay, even with the history of the whole period in which these events occur

The Bay Psalm Book The First Book Printed in British North America, 1640【電子書籍】[ Zoltan Haraszti ]

The founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to the New World seeking religious freedom, and their first publication was a hymnal: The Bay Psalm Book, printed just twenty years after the Pilgrims' arrival. This book, with which the Pilgrims literally sang their praises to God, presents a translation of the Psalms from Hebrew, transposed into metrical rhyme for congregational singing. An instant success, the book was adopted throughout the colonies and remained in use for well over a century. Only eleven known original editions survive, one of which recently sold at auction for a record $14.2 million, making it the most expensive book in the world. This facsimile of a rare first edition includes a companion volume, The Enigma of the Bay Psalm Book, which provides an academic study of the psalter's history and contents. Both books are encompassed in this single volume, offering readers and collectors a personal edition of a major icon of book history and a great artifact of American culture.

This is What Democracy Looked Like A Visual History of the Printed Ballot【電子書籍】[ Alicia Cheng ]

This Is What Democracy Looked Like, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this visual history reveals unregulated, outlandish, and, at times, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots offer insight into a pivotal time in American historyーa period of tectonic shifts in the electoral systemーfraught with electoral fraud, disenfranchisement, scams, and skullduggery, as parties printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls.

Life Writings, II Printed Writings 1641?1700: Series II, Part One, Volume 2【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Skerpan-Wheeler ]

A Bibliographical Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in England 1558?1603【

Through entries on 291 Italian books (451 editions) published in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, covering the years 1558-1603, this catalogue represents a summary of current research and knowledge of diffusion of Italian culture on English literature in this period. It also provides a foundation for new work on Anglo-Italian relations in Elizabethan England. Mary Augusta Scott's 1916 Elizabethan Translations from the Italian forms the basis for the catalogue; Soko Tomita adds 59 new books and eliminates 23 of Scott's original entries. The information here is presented in a user-friendly and uncluttered manner, guided by Philip Gaskell's principles of bibliographical description; the volume includes bibliographical descriptions, tables, graphs, images, and two indices (general and title). In an attempt to restore each book to its original status, each entry is concerned not only with the physical book, but with the human elements guiding it through production: the relationship with the author, editor, translator, publisher, book-seller, and patron are all recounted as important players in the exploration of cultural significance. Renaissance Anglo-Italian relations were marked by both patriotism and xenophobia; this catalogue provides reliable and comprehensive information about books and publication as well as concrete evidence of what elements of Italian culture the English responded to and how Italian culture was acclimatized into Elizabethan England.
