Moral Materialism A Semantic Theory of Ethical Naturalism【電子書籍】[ Ashish Dalela ]

Modern science describes the physical effects of material causes, but not the moral consequences of conscious choices. Is nature merely a rational place, or is it also a moral place? The question of morality has always been important for economists, sociologists, political theorists, and lawmakers. However, it has had almost no impact on the understanding of material nature in science.

This book argues that the questions of morality can be connected to natural law in science when science is revised to describe nature as meaningful symbols rather than as meaningless things. The revision, of course, is entailed not just by issues of morality but also due to profound unsolved problems of incompleteness, indeterminism, irreversibility and incomputability in physics, mathematics, and computing theory. This book shows how the two kinds of problems are deeply connected.

The book argues that the lawfulness in nature is different from that presented in current science. Nature comprises not just things but also our theories about those things. The world of things is determined but the world of theories is notーour theories represent our free will, and the interaction between free will and matter now has a causal consequence in the evolution of scientific theories.

The moral consequences of free will represent the ideological evolution of the observer, and the correct theory represents the freedom from this evolution. Free will is therefore not the choice of arbitrary and false theories; free will is the choice of the correct theory. Once the correct theory is chosen, the observer is free of natural laws, since all phenomena are consistent with the correct theory.

Frames, Fields, and Contrasts New Essays in Semantic and Lexical Organization【

Recently, there has been a surge of interest in the lexicon. The demand for a fuller and more adequate understanding of lexical meaning required by developments in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science has stimulated a refocused interest in linguistics, psychology, and philosophy. Different disciplines have studied lexical structure from their own vantage points, and because scholars have only intermittently communicated across disciplines, there has been little recognition that there is a common subject matter. The conference on which this volume is based brought together interested thinkers across the disciplines of linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and computer science to exchange ideas, discuss a range of questions and approaches to the topic, consider alternative research strategies and methodologies, and formulate interdisciplinary hypotheses concerning lexical organization. The essay subjects discussed include:

* alternative and complementary conceptions of the structure of the lexicon,

* the nature of semantic relations and of polysemy,

* the relation between meanings, concepts, and lexical organization,

* critiques of truth-semantics and referential theories of meaning,

* computational accounts of lexical information and structure, and

* the advantages of thinking of the lexicon as ordered.

Spreading Activation, Lexical Priming and the Semantic Web Early Psycholinguistic Theories, Corpus Linguistics and AI Applications【電子書籍】[ Michael Pace-Sigge ]

This book explores the interconnections between linguistics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, their mutually influential theories and developments, and the areas where these two groups can still learn from each other. It begins with a brief history of artificial intelligence theories focusing on figures including Alan Turing and M. Ross Quillian and the key concepts of priming, spread-activation and the semantic web. The author details the origins of the theory of lexical priming in early AI research and how it can be used to explain structures of language that corpus linguists have uncovered. He explores how the idea of mirroring the mind’s language processing has been adopted to create machines that can be taught to listen and understand human speech in a way that goes beyond a fixed set of commands. In doing so, he reveals how the latest research into the semantic web and Natural Language Processing has developed from its early roots. The book moves on to describe how the technology has evolved with the adoption of inference concepts, probabilistic grammar models, and deep neural networks in order to fine-tune the latest language-processing and translation tools. This engaging book offers thought-provoking insights to corpus linguists, computational linguists and those working in AI and NLP.

Google Semantic Search in Ireland. Personalisation, Trust, Influence, Reliance, Reputation, and Ethics An Irish Discussion【電子書籍】[ Pierce Ivory ]

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: First Class Honours, , course: Masters Degree in Digital Marketing - Semantic Search Personalisation, language: English, abstract: This research is an investigation into the Irish public's perception of Google search. The study examines the methods used by Google to present users with the most relevant and satisfactory search results. 95% of the online public in Ireland use Google as a search tool. This study aims to uncover true user sentiment in Ireland. The objectives of this research are to reveal how the Irish public view Google in regards to semantic search personalisation, trust, influence, reliance, reputation, and ethics. The existing literature revealed that Google's search engine has evolved from, one that used Boolean Search logic to match keywords, to a semantic engine that understands user intent and context. The literature also reveals how the younger 'Millennial' generation associate the Internet with one brand, Google. The literature examines search personalisation and how intuitive it has become as it serves us with content that matches our online behaviour. We discover that over-personalisation is narrowing our search bubble which in turn can blind us from other information outside our search reach. During the course of this study, a mixed method research was used to measure and discuss public opinion. This study has identified where literature has fallen short. Where gaps have appeared in the literature, qualitative meaning has been extracted from 3 groups of people from differing levels of technical ability and experience. It was discovered that age demographic affects how we view Google as a search engine. Quantitative findings revealed that 75% of users were aware of personalisation but 70% of these users were not always happy with the results. Although a general consensus was formed that personalisation was helpful in many respects, it was also argued, in some camps, that it breached ethical boundaries. Overall, there was a national split whether users considered personalisation ethical or not. This study leaves open the debate of how we perceive Google as a nation but it also gets closer to the truth of how we feel about the search engine on a personal level. The research also confirms that there is plenty of opportunity to carry out further studies into this area.

Pierce Ivory has been involved in Digital Marketing since 2010. Ecommerce was his stepping stone into the Digital Marketing space. Pierce understood that experience alone was not enough to progress in Online Marketing. Education enabled him to develop as a Digital Marketer in an analytic way. Education also connected Pierce with like-minded people from a Digital background.Being part of a community full of 'always learning' individuals was essential to development as an Online specialist. Pierce finished his Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing in 2014 and completed his Masters Degree in December 2015 with First class Honours (1.1). His research included Search Personalisation, Trust, Reputation and Ethics. He carried out primary research, identifying the gaps in existing information in Ireland. PierceI fully understands and appreciates the need and importance for every company to have an online footprint driven by an intelligently tailored Strategy. He firmly believes that if you are an Individual, an SME or a Corporation, digital marketing will help leverage your presence online and enhance your offline presence. Semantic Web-based Intelligent Geospatial Web Services【電子書籍】[ Peng Yue ]

By introducing Semantic Web technologies into geospatial Web services, this book addresses the semantic description of geospatial data and standards-based Web services, discovery of geospatial data and services, and generation of composite services. Semantic descriptions for geospatial data, services, and geoprocessing service chains are structured, organized, and registered in geospatial catalogue services. The ontology-based approach helps to improve the recall and precision of data and services discovery. Semantics-enabled metadata tracking and satisfaction allows analysts to focus on the generation of a geospatial process model rather than spending large amounts of time in data preparation. “DataType”-driven service composition and path planning can help to automate a range of knowledge discovery processes in a limited geospatial domain. Process planning facilitates the construction of complex services and models for geocomputation. A three-phase procedure to cover the lifecycle of service chaining and to identify the roles of the methods involved is proposed. It includes process modeling, process model instantiation, and workflow execution. The approach is implemented in a prototype system with use cases to demonstrate applicability.

The objective of the research is to develop the key technologies for an intelligent geospatial knowledge system based on Web services to automate the data discovery and data preprocessing steps in the distributed Web service environment, to automate a range of knowledge discovery processes in a limited geospatial domain, using the automated construction and execution of service chains, and to facilitate the construction of complex services and models for geocomputation.

Topic-Focus Articulation, Tripartite Structures, and Semantic Content【電子書籍】[ Eva Hajicov? ]

1 OBJECTIVES The main objective of this joint work is to bring together some ideas that have played central roles in two disparate theoretical traditions in order to con tribute to a better understanding of the relationship between focus and the syn tactic and semantic structure of sentences. Within the Prague School tradition and the branch of its contemporary development represented by Hajicova and Sgall (HS in the sequel), topic-focus articulation has long been a central object of study, and it has long been a tenet of Prague school linguistics that topic-focus structure has systematic relevance to meaning. Within the formal semantics tradition represented by Partee (BHP in the sequel), focus has much more recently become an area of concerted investigation, but a number of the semantic phenomena to which focus is relevant have been extensively investi gated and given explicit compositional semantic-analyses. The emergence of 'tripartite structures' (see Chapter 2) in formal semantics and the partial simi larities that can be readily observed between some aspects of tripartite structures and some aspects of Praguian topic-focus articulation have led us to expect that a closer investigation of the similarities and differences in these different theoretical constructs would be a rewarding undertaking with mutual benefits for the further development of our respective theories and potential benefit for the study of semantic effects of focus in other theories as well.

Measuring and Analysing the Use of Ontologies A Semantic Framework for Measuring Ontology Usage【電子書籍】[ Jamshaid Ashraf ]

This unique book succinctly summarizes the need to measure how ontologies (one of the building blocks of the Semantic Web) are currently being utilized, providing insights for various stakeholders. Where possible it improves and reuses terms in existing vocabularies/ontologies, as recommended by the Linked Data community. Recent advances in the Semantic Web have led to a proliferation of Resource Description Framework (RDF) data, which employ ontologies to semantically describe the information on the Web making it equally understandable for both humans and machines. However, to create a network effect, it is important that selective ontologies are used by more data publishers to improve the value of that ontology. For this to happen, it is vital to discover what is being used from an ontology to semantically annotate the information on the Web specific to a given domain. Answers to such basic but crucial questions can only be achieved by ascertaining how ontologies in the current semantic web are being utilized and adopted. The proposed frameworks to obtain such insights are explained with real-world examples to provide a clear and detailed description of ontology usage analysis.

Both theoretical and practical, the book is of value to academics and professionals working in industry. Specifically, it is of primary interest to researchers, graduate students and practitioners in the area of the Semantic Web and its various real-world applications.

When "I" Might Be, Where "We" Are, or What You Will Concerning: Multiversal Personkinds and 'Self-Conscious' Semantic Sort【電子書籍】[ Rudolph McNair ]

Rudolph McNair is a National Merit Scholar who focused on philosophy and became convinced that a clear understanding of what the concept of person and of the self is meant to stand for is essential to the settling of many contemporary arguments about notions like social posture, civil and reproductive rights of persons, or political identity. He undertakes this study with a particular attention given to the jazziness of dialogue (as engaged in by about personkinds), and confronts the problem with the supposed literal standing of some avowed ideas, depending upon the language group attending to them. He suggests that there are many streams of figurative meaning, with strong currents, into which people engaged in any language group might wade, and he asks whether there can be a solid literal ground upon which any societal identity might stand (as might regard expressions like minority, patriot, watchman or police officer, and such like). The reader should beware that this is a collection of essays that might present a dangerous course to follow. For instance, McNair insists that an awakened/enlivened personkindness and, necessarily, the process of socioemotional integration essential to it, has substance only at the event horizon surrounding selves (or souls, if you will) where we sort out all aspects of real life-time phenomenain which case we cannot know when or whether selves occur (are born) at all, in the way we track person-being. A concentrated collection of mostly basic annotation and the author hopes, witty explanation, that the reader might find an intriguing train of thought.

Retrieval from Semantic Memory【電子書籍】[ W. Noordman-Vonk ]

The area of concern to Dr. Wietske Noordman~Vonk has been variously seen as an aspect of long-term memory [F. I], secondary memory [F. 2], memory without record [F. 3], and semantic memory [F. 4J, the latter term being the one pre ferred by Dr. Noordman-Vonk herself. This proliferation of terminology is not an entirely trivial matter, for although the expressions clearly overlap in range, they do draw attention to different features of the phenomena under consideration. The work reported here is concerned with the form of representation and manipulation of our knowledge that, for example, a dog is an animal, or that mothers and daughters are parents and children. To put it more generally, the experiments attempt to elucidate the psychological processes involved in the~emantics of class-inclusion and, most importantly, to extend the explanatory principles there invoked to a new domain, that of kinship relations. Clearly, the connections between "ant" and "insect", or "flower" and "plant" have been known to us - as adults - for some considerable period of time; in the absence of brain injury or degeneration we are unlikely to "forget" that fathers and sons are kin of the same sex. We may therefor- pretheoretically - distinguish between retrieval of such knowledge and. re trieval of a rapidly fading sequence of random numbers that we are asked to recall after a single presentation. It is in this sense that the current work is concerned with long-term and not short-term memory.

The Semantic Charging of Space in 'The Castle of Otranto' (Gothic Novel)【電子書籍】[ Christina Gieseler ]

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Wuppertal (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: The British Novel in the Late 18th and Early 19th Century, language: English, abstract: [...] An awful silence reigned throughout those subterraneous regions, except now and then some blasts of wind that shook the doors [Isabella] had passed, and which grating on the rusty hinges were re-echoed through that long labyrinth of darkness. Every murmur struck her with new terror [...] (Walpole 61). This passage of Walpole's The Castle of Otranto is only one example that shows how the construction of the setting in this novel strongly contributes to the atmosphere of the tale. Also in other passages it becomes obvious that the description of space and landscape conveys a specific meaning within the story, and even prefigures the development throughout the plot. Thus, several places and the landscape depicted in the setting may function as semantic carriers (cf. ibid. 133). In this essay it will be examined in how far space is semantically charged in Walpole's work, and how this influences the plot, the atmosphere within the story, and the reader's perception of it. In addition, it will be shown that the semantic charging of the settings in The Castle of Otranto is also influenced by its being a Gothic novel. Therefore, a definition of the latter term will be given as well...

Semantic Web and Model-Driven Engineering【電子書籍】[ Fernando S. Parreiras ]

The next enterprise computing era will rely on the synergy between both technologies: semantic web and model-driven software development (MDSD). The semantic web organizes system knowledge in conceptual domains according to its meaning. It addresses various enterprise computing needs by identifying, abstracting and rationalizing commonalities, and checking for inconsistencies across system specifications. On the other side, model-driven software development is closing the gap among business requirements, designs and executables by using domain-specific languages with custom-built syntax and semantics. It focuses on using modeling languages as programming languages.

Among many areas of application, we highlight the area of configuration management. Consider the example of a telecommunication company, where managing the multiple configurations of network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.) is crucial. Enterprise systems identify and document the functional and physical characteristics of network devices, and control changes to those characteristics. Applying the integration of semantic web and model-driven software development allows for

(1) explicitly specifying configurations of network devices with tailor-made languages,

(2) for checking the consistency of these specifications

(3) for defining a vocabulary to share device specifications across enterprise systems. By managing configurations with consistent and explicit concepts, we reduce cost and risk, and enhance agility in response to new requirements in the telecommunication area.

This book examines the synergy between semantic web and model-driven software development. It brings together advances from disciplines like ontologies, description logics, domain-specific modeling, model transformation and ontology engineering to take enterprise computing to the next level.

Semantic Technologies for E-Government【

E-government faces huge challenges in achieving interoperability and integration, taking into account differences in laws, regulations, services, administrative processes and languages across regions and countries. On the other hand, issues like service, data and process integration have been researched by the Semantic Web community for several years now, and in the last two to three years we have witnessed the first applications of semantic technologies in real, operational e-government systems in both Europe and the US which address exactly these challenges.

With this book, the editors present the latest research results on how to use semantic technologies in order to improve or even revolutionize the use of ICT in public administration systems. The contributions are organized into three parts: architectures and process integration, ontologies and interoperability, and portals and user interactions. They give a broad overview of how semantic technologies have been applied in different e-government projects funded from the European program for ICT Research and Development, and they cover a wide spectrum of semantic technologies such as development of domain and service ontologies, semantic enhancements of business process models, semantic Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs) based on Semantic Web Services (SWS) frameworks, and ontology-based knowledge management.

In this volume, researchers of Semantic Web technologies will find a wealth of challenging real-world scenarios to stimulate new fields of research, while developers of e-government systems as well as other stakeholders in public administration will appreciate the detailed presentations and discussions of numerous applications in areas such as e-government portals, personalization of Web-based public services, or integration and orchestration of public administration processes.

Breadth and Depth of Semantic Lexicons【

Most of the books about computational (lexical) semantic lexicons deal with the depth (or content) aspect of lexicons, ignoring the breadth (or coverage) aspect. This book presents a first attempt in the community to address both issues: content and coverage of computational semantic lexicons, in a thorough manner. Moreover, it addresses issues which have not yet been tackled in implemented systems such as the application time of lexical rules. Lexical rules and lexical underspecification are also contrasted in implemented systems. The main approaches in the field of computational (lexical) semantics are represented in the present book (including Wordnet, CyC, Mikrokosmos, Generative Lexicon).
This book embraces several fields (and subfields) as different as: linguistics (theoretical, computational, semantics, pragmatics), psycholinguistics, cognitive science, computer science, artificial intelligence, knowledge representation, statistics and natural language processing. The book also constitutes a very good introduction to the state of the art in computational semantic lexicons of the late 1990s.

Semantic Antics How and Why Words Change Meaning【電子書籍】[ Sol Steinmetz ]

"My favorite popular word book of the year"
-William Safire, NY Times 6/22/2008

A fun, new approach to examining etymology!

Many common English words started out with an entirely different meaning than the one we know today. For example:

The word adamant came into English around 855 C.E. as a synonym for 'diamond,'very different from today's meaning of the word: "utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion."

Before the year 1200, the word silly meant "blessed," and was derived from Old English saelig, meaning "happy." This word went through several incarnations before adopting today's meaning: "stupid or foolish."

In Semantic Antics, lexicographer Sol Steinmetz takes readers on an in-depth, fascinating journey to learn how hundreds of words have evolved from their first meaning to the meanings used today.

Building Scalable and Smart Multimedia Applications on the Semantic Web【電子書籍】[ Michael Hausenblas ]

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Information Management, grade: 1,0, University of Graz, language: English, abstract: The Semantic Web has become reality over the past couple of years. While certain practical topics-such as interoperability, etc.-have at least partially been addressed, scalability and expressivity issues regarding the utilisation of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web are still widely neglected. However, existing Web (2.0) applications handling millions of multimedia assets are starting to take advantage of Semantic Web technologies. This work contributes to design decisions regarding scalable and smart multimedia applications on the Semantic Web. Based on an analysis of practical issues-stemming from diverse projects and activities the author has participated in over the past four years-three areas have been identified, namely (i) performance and scalability issues on the data access level, (ii) the effective and efficient representation of multimedia content descriptions, and (iii) the deployment of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web. The three research areas have as its common base the trade-off between expressivity and scalability. We present our ?ndings regarding scalable, yet expressive Semantic Web multimedia applications in a number of practical settings and discuss future directions, such as interlinking multimedia.

Dislocated Elements in Discourse Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic Perspectives【

This volume is about 'dislocation' ? the removal of phrases from their canonical positions in a sentence to its left or right edge. Dislocation encompasses a wide range of linguistic phenomena, related to nominal and adverbial expressions and to the information structuring notions of topic and focus; and takes intriguingly different forms across languages. This book reveals some of the empirical richness of dislocation and some key puzzles related to its syntactic, semantic, and discourse analysis.
