The Invisible Host【電子書籍】[ Gwen Bristow ]
|

"Do not doubt me, my friends; you shall all be dead before morning."

New Orleans, 1930. Eight guests are invited to a party at a luxurious penthouse apartment, yet on arrival it turns out that no one knows who their mysterious host actually is. The latter does not openly appear, but instead communicates with the guests by radio broadcast. What he has to tell his guests is chilling: that every hour, one of them will die. Despite putting the guests on their guard, the Host's prophecy starts to come horribly true, each demise occurring in bizarre fashion. As the dwindling band of survivors grows increasingly tense, their confessions to each other might explain why they have been chosen for this macabre evening-and invoke the nightmarish thought that the mysterious Host is one of them. The burning question becomes: will any of the party survive, including the Host . . . ?

The Invisible Host (1930) established one of the best-loved and most durable forms in classic mystery fiction. It was famously to reappear in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None (1939). How much Christie's novel is indebted to its predecessor is open to conjecture (and the subject is discussed in our new introduction, by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans). Whatever the verdict, readers will delight in The Invisible Host, an innovative and most unusual mystery from the golden age of crime fiction. It was adapted into a play, and a Hollywood movie as The Ninth Guest (1934).

Invisible Barriers Understanding and Overcoming Discrimination in the Workplace【電子書籍】[ Stephane Carcillo ]
|

An essential resource for anyone committed to fostering equality and fairness in employmentーwith actionable proposals for public policy that can address these inequities.

In a world where discrimination against minorities remains a pressing issue even in economically and socially advanced countries, Invisible Barriers delves into the multifaceted nature of this pervasive problem. Drawing on extensive research from economics, management, psychology, and sociology, St?phane Carcillo and Marie-Anne Valfort present a comprehensive examination of discriminatory practices in employment and their profound social and economic impacts.

The first part of the book methodically explores the forms, sources, and consequences of discrimination in the labor market, offering readers a solid understanding of the approaches used to measure and identify discriminatory practices. In the second part, the book details research findings on specific groups, illustrating how discrimination manifests uniquely across different demographics: women, ethnic minorities, older workers, LGBTIQ+, and more. From recruitment biases to career advancement hurdles, the book sheds light on the varied and often hidden ways that discrimination operates. Finally, the authors discuss public policies aimed at mitigating discrimination, advocating for a multifaceted approach that combines punitive measures with incentives, educational programs, and communication campaigns to effectively combat biases, prejudices, and stereotypes.

Writing Invisible: Building a Career in Genre Fiction While Going (Mostly) Unnoticed【電子書籍】[ Noelle Adams ]
|

Writing Invisible offers no secret formulas for success in commercial fiction. No empty positivity on how you'll make it in this business if you try hard enough. No step-by-step directions on craft, marketing, or publishing. And only two guarantees.

Pursuing an author career will eventually break your heart, but writing another book you love never will.

What Writing Invisible does offer is a different picture of success in the genres. Through authentic reflections on her own career, honest advice, and grounded observations on how the stories of her heart interact with the commercial book market, the author publishing as both Noelle Adams and Claire Kent highlights how she has managed to stay out of the spotlight while building an author career over thirteen years, two pen names, 136 books, and more than three million dollars in writing income.

The topics this book covers include the following:

intentionally positioning yourself as an invisible writer

the intrinsic value of good storytelling and authentic voices in the genres

writing the books of your heart while still making money

maintaining inner peace and creative freedom while managing social media presence, book events, reviews, marketing, and networking

integrating hook and heart in the writing process

tips for consistency, marketability, productivity and faster writing

More than anything else, Writing Invisible offers hope. That maybe, in the middle of a book market filled with noise, with loud voices, with conflicting expectations, with more focus on packaging than stories, and with endless amounts of stuff, it's possible to craft a career that still and always holds story at the center. Maybe it's possible to not buckle under the pressure of shaping yourself into one of the personalities that's marketable online. Maybe you can find readers without hauling around all the extra baggage that's treated as a requirement for a successful career.

Maybe it's possible to be mostly invisible.

And just write.

Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan The Invisible Empire【
|

This book draws attention to a striking aspect of contemporary Japanese culture: the prevalence of discussions and representations of “spirits” (tama or tamashii). Ancestor cults have played a central role in Japanese culture and religion for many centuries; in recent decades, however, other phenomena have expanded and diversified the realm of Japanese animism. For example, many manga, anime, TV shows, literature, and art works deal with spirits, ghosts, or with an invisible dimension of reality. International contributors ask to what extent these are cultural forms created by the media for consumption, rather than manifestations of “traditional” ancestral spirituality in their adaptations to contemporary society.

Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan considers the modes of representations and the possible cultural meanings of spirits, as well as the metaphysical implications of contemporary Japanese ideas about spirits. The chapters offer analyses of specific cases of “animistic attitudes” in which the presence of spirits and spiritual forces is alleged, and attempt to trace cultural genealogies of those attitudes. In particular, they present various modes of representation of spirits (in contemporary art, architecture, visual culture, cinema, literature, diffuse spirituality) while at the same time addressing their underlying intellectual and religious assumptions.

The Invisible Hand of the Market Enriched edition. The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)【電子書籍】[ Adam Smith ]
|

In "The Invisible Hand of the Market," Adam Smith presents a groundbreaking exploration of economic theory that profoundly influenced the discipline of economics and our understanding of market dynamics. Written in the 18th century, Smith employs a compelling blend of philosophical discourse and empirical observation to argue for the self-regulating nature of markets, driven by individuals pursuing their self-interest. His eloquent prose not only illuminates contemporary economic practices but also lays the foundational principles of capitalism, emphasizing how individual efforts contribute to collective prosperity through what he famously terms the 'invisible hand.' Adam Smith, often hailed as the father of modern economics, was a philosopher and economist whose intellectual milieu shaped his theories. His experiences in mercantile society and a keen observation of human behavior helped him articulate the complex interrelationships within economic systems. Smith's educational background in moral philosophy, intertwined with his commitment to rational inquiry, led him to challenge prevailing mercantilist ideas that dominated his time, ultimately advocating for free-market principles that remain relevant today. This seminal work is an essential read for anyone interested in understanding the intricacies of economic systems and the ethical implications of market activities. Smith's insights extend beyond economics, prompting readers to reconsider the balance between self-interest and social good. Whether you are a seasoned economist or a casual reader, "The Invisible Hand of the Market" offers invaluable perspectives that continue to resonate in contemporary discourse. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A comprehensive Introduction outlines these selected works' unifying features, themes, or stylistic evolutions. - The Author Biography highlights personal milestones and literary influences that shape the entire body of writing. - A Historical Context section situates the works in their broader eraーsocial currents, cultural trends, and key events that underpin their creation. - A concise Synopsis (Selection) offers an accessible overview of the included texts, helping readers navigate plotlines and main ideas without revealing critical twists. - A unified Analysis examines recurring motifs and stylistic hallmarks across the collection, tying the stories together while spotlighting the different work's strengths. - Reflection questions inspire deeper contemplation of the author's overarching message, inviting readers to draw connections among different texts and relate them to modern contexts. - Lastly, our handーpicked Memorable Quotes distill pivotal lines and turning points, serving as touchstones for the collection's central themes.

The Invisible Foe【電子書籍】[ Louise Jordan Miln ]
|

In "The Invisible Foe," Louise Jordan Miln weaves a haunting narrative that deftly encapsulates the psychological intricacies of fear and isolation. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, Miln employs a modernist literary style characterized by stream-of-consciousness techniques and vivid imagery, reflecting the protagonist's internal struggles with an unseen adversary. This exploration of existential dread not only resonates with contemporary themes of mental health but also serves as a window into the social anxieties of her time, marked by rapid changes and uncertainties regarding personal and collective identity. Louise Jordan Miln, an American author with a rich literary career, often drew inspiration from her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated literary world. Her background in social issues and commitment to women's rights imbue "The Invisible Foe" with depth, as she articulates the often-voiceless fears that women face. Her unique perspective allows her to challenge societal norms and illuminate the psychological burdens placed upon individuals, particularly during periods of societal upheaval. I highly recommend "The Invisible Foe" for readers interested in psychological fiction that delves deep into human fears and societal constructs. Miln's nuanced prose and complex characterization invite readers to reflect on their own battles with the invisible foes that manifest in their lives. Engaging and thought-provoking, this novel is an essential exploration of the human condition.
