The Invisible Host【電子書籍】[ Gwen Bristow ]

"Do not doubt me, my friends; you shall all be dead before morning."

New Orleans, 1930. Eight guests are invited to a party at a luxurious penthouse apartment, yet on arrival it turns out that no one knows who their mysterious host actually is. The latter does not openly appear, but instead communicates with the guests by radio broadcast. What he has to tell his guests is chilling: that every hour, one of them will die. Despite putting the guests on their guard, the Host's prophecy starts to come horribly true, each demise occurring in bizarre fashion. As the dwindling band of survivors grows increasingly tense, their confessions to each other might explain why they have been chosen for this macabre evening-and invoke the nightmarish thought that the mysterious Host is one of them. The burning question becomes: will any of the party survive, including the Host . . . ?

The Invisible Host (1930) established one of the best-loved and most durable forms in classic mystery fiction. It was famously to reappear in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None (1939). How much Christie's novel is indebted to its predecessor is open to conjecture (and the subject is discussed in our new introduction, by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans). Whatever the verdict, readers will delight in The Invisible Host, an innovative and most unusual mystery from the golden age of crime fiction. It was adapted into a play, and a Hollywood movie as The Ninth Guest (1934).

The History of Witchcraft in America Complete Collection: The Wonders of the Invisible World, The Salem Witchcraft, The Planchette Mystery, Modern Spiritualism, Witchcraft of New England, Witchcraft Delusion at Salem…【電子書籍】

British Colonies on the east coast of North American continent had been settled by religious refugees seeking to build a pure, Bible-based society. They lived closely with the sense of the supernatural and they intended to build a society based on their religious beliefs. That is what caused numerous quarrels, troubles and accusations among which the witchcraft was quite common and the most dangerous. While witch trials had begun to fade out across much of Europe by the mid-17th century, they continued in the American Colonies. The earliest recorded witchcraft execution in America was in 1647 in Connecticut. The witch hunt in American Colonies culminated with the Salem Trials when over 200 people were accused, and 19 of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging. This collection contains books that depict the history of witchcraft and witch trials in the USA. The Invisible Foe【電子書籍】[ Louise Jordan Miln ]

In "The Invisible Foe," Louise Jordan Miln weaves a haunting narrative that deftly encapsulates the psychological intricacies of fear and isolation. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, Miln employs a modernist literary style characterized by stream-of-consciousness techniques and vivid imagery, reflecting the protagonist's internal struggles with an unseen adversary. This exploration of existential dread not only resonates with contemporary themes of mental health but also serves as a window into the social anxieties of her time, marked by rapid changes and uncertainties regarding personal and collective identity. Louise Jordan Miln, an American author with a rich literary career, often drew inspiration from her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated literary world. Her background in social issues and commitment to women's rights imbue "The Invisible Foe" with depth, as she articulates the often-voiceless fears that women face. Her unique perspective allows her to challenge societal norms and illuminate the psychological burdens placed upon individuals, particularly during periods of societal upheaval. I highly recommend "The Invisible Foe" for readers interested in psychological fiction that delves deep into human fears and societal constructs. Miln's nuanced prose and complex characterization invite readers to reflect on their own battles with the invisible foes that manifest in their lives. Engaging and thought-provoking, this novel is an essential exploration of the human condition.

The Invisible Man (1897) blends comedy and tragedy in its story of a scientist who discovers a way to make himself invisible. His inability to reverse the process leads to a radical disconnection from societyーand eventually from his own sanity. Arriving in a town where no one knows him, disguised in bandages and dark glasses, the invisible man is driven to violent and criminal extremes before his secret is revealed. The Time Machine (Science Fiction Classic) A Time Travel Novel from the English futurist, historian, socialist, author of The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, The First Men in the Moon, The Outline of Hi【電子書籍】

This carefully crafted ebook: "The Time Machine (Science Fiction Classic)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Time Machine is a science fiction novel. Wells is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now almost universally used to refer to such a vehicle. The story reflects Wells's own socialist political views, his view on life and abundance, and the contemporary angst about industrial relations. The book's protagonist is an English scientist and gentleman inventor living in Richmond, Surrey in Victorian England, and identified by a narrator simply as the Time Traveller. The narrator recounts the Traveller's lecture to his weekly dinner guests that time is simply a fourth dimension, and his demonstration of a tabletop model machine for travelling through it. Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946), known as H. G. Wells, was a prolific English writer in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, and social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games.

Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan The Invisible Empire【

This book draws attention to a striking aspect of contemporary Japanese culture: the prevalence of discussions and representations of “spirits” (tama or tamashii). Ancestor cults have played a central role in Japanese culture and religion for many centuries; in recent decades, however, other phenomena have expanded and diversified the realm of Japanese animism. For example, many manga, anime, TV shows, literature, and art works deal with spirits, ghosts, or with an invisible dimension of reality. International contributors ask to what extent these are cultural forms created by the media for consumption, rather than manifestations of “traditional” ancestral spirituality in their adaptations to contemporary society.

Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan considers the modes of representations and the possible cultural meanings of spirits, as well as the metaphysical implications of contemporary Japanese ideas about spirits. The chapters offer analyses of specific cases of “animistic attitudes” in which the presence of spirits and spiritual forces is alleged, and attempt to trace cultural genealogies of those attitudes. In particular, they present various modes of representation of spirits (in contemporary art, architecture, visual culture, cinema, literature, diffuse spirituality) while at the same time addressing their underlying intellectual and religious assumptions.

The collection boasts a rich tapestry of texts that unfold a broad spectrum of literary styles, ranging from trial transcripts and sermons to reflective essays. Its diversity not only showcases the historical depth and transformation of American society's view on witchcraft but also underscores significant works that explore the socio-religious implications of witchcraft accusations and the ensuing trials. The anthology serves as a crucial confluence of historical narratives and personal accounts, reflecting the broader literary and cultural milieu of the times. The contributing authors, including noted historians and clergymen like Cotton Mather and Charles Wentworth Upham, bring a compelling mix of perspectives rooted in their distinct historical and cultural contexts. Collectively, their work aligns with several significant literary and cultural movements, offering a nuanced understanding of the intersections of religion, law, and community in shaping attitudes towards witchcraft. Their writings not only document historical events but also critically analyze the impact of witchcraft on American religious and social frameworks, challenging readers to reconsider popular narratives. By bringing together seminal works that span several centuries, the anthology offers a unique educational journey through the shifting landscapes of American cultural and religious thought. The Invisible Hand of the Market: The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)【電子書籍】[ Adam Smith ]

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Invisible Hand of the Market: The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents.
The invisible hand of the market is a metaphor conceived by Adam Smith to describe the self-regulating behavior of the marketplace. The exact phrase is used just three times in Smith's writings, but has come to capture his important claim that individuals' efforts to maximize their own gains in a free market benefits society, even if the ambitious have no benevolent intentions. Smith came up with the two meanings of the phrase from Richard Cantillon who developed both economic applications in his model of the isolated estate. He first introduced the concept in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written in 1759. In this work, however, the idea of the market is not discussed, and the word "capitalism" is never used. By the time he wrote The Wealth of Nations in 1776, Smith had studied the economic models of the French Physiocrats for many years, and in this work the invisible hand is more directly linked to the concept of the market: specifically that it is competition between buyers and sellers that channels the profit motive of individuals on both sides of the transaction such that improved products are produced and at lower costs. This process whereby competition channels ambition toward socially desirable ends comes out most clearly in The Wealth of Nations, Book I, Chapter 7. The idea of markets automatically channeling self-interest toward socially desirable ends is a central justification for the laissez-faire economic philosophy, which lies behind neoclassical economics. In this sense, the central disagreement between economic ideologies can be viewed as a disagreement about how powerful the "invisible hand" is.

The Indispensable Brand Move from Invisible to Invaluable【電子書籍】[ Mitch Duckler ]

According to market research conducted on more than 6,000 brands over a 10-year period, the proportion of people willing to endorse any brand as different from other brands is extremely low. Over the past two decades, a relentless focus on digital activationーwithout equal effort on establishing differentiated positioningーhas made even once-great brands indistinguishable from the pack. The result: an environment that can only be described as brand monotony, which underwhelms and disappoints customers, and negatively impacts top- and bottom-line business performance. In The Indispensable Brand, Mitch Duckler draws on 25+ years of brand strategy experience to provide a wake-up call for any modern-day marketer or business leaderーand a roadmap to more effective brand differentiation. Leveraging empirical market research and dozens of case studies, this book provides a 360-degree view on brand-building, focusing on strategy (e.g., positioning, architecture, and extendibility) as well as development (e.g., experience, story, and activation), and helping marketers transform their brands from indistinguishable to indispensable.
