Growth of the Soil【電子書籍】[ Knut Hamsun ]
|

"Growth of the Soil" is a novel by Knut Hamsun which won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. The novel was written in the popular style of Norwegian new realism, a movement dominating the early 20th century. It exemplified Hamsun's aversion to modernity and inclination towards primitivism and the agrarian lifestyle. "Growth of the Soil" portrays the main protagonist, Isak, and his family as awed by modernity, yet at times, they come into conflict with it. The novel contains two sections entitled Book One and Book Two. The first book focuses almost solely on the story of Isak and his family and the second book starts off by following the plight of Axel and ends mainly focusing on Isak's family.

Changes in Paddy Soil Fertility in Tropical Asia under Green Revolution From the 1960s to the 2010s【電子書籍】
|

This book investigates the effect of the Green Revolution (GR) on long-term changes in the fertility status of paddy soils in tropical Asia. While information on long-term changes in soil fertility status are rather limited due to difficulties in obtaining past data or samples for comparison, this investigation on temporal changes in soil fertility is possible by comparing fertility status in the 2010s, which the authors examined recently, with those from the 1960s, when GR was initiated, which was reported by Kawaguchi & Kyuma (1977). More than 220 paddy soils collected from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia were analyzed for their physicochemical properties as well as total and available fractions of plant macro- and micro- essential elements, and their temporal changes were examined in addition to their spatial variation in each country. The most significant change was a drastic increase of available phosphorus in soils, possibly due to fertilizationafter the GR. Changes in organic matter, pH, and other nutrients were relatively small. A considerable decrease in the content of some micronutrients was also observed. Long-term studies on soil fertility status in the past and present will be useful to establish soil/fertilizer management for sustainable rice production in the future.

This book is an essential reading for soil scientists, agricultural scientists, environmental scientists, as well as policymakers and nongovernmental officers such as FAO.

Healthy soil is key to sustaining life on Earth. While more and more people are starting to see the need for soil restoration, there is very little understanding of just how it can be accomplished. There is a rapidly emerging demand for a “how to” manual for soil restoration. Dale Strickler is an expert on building healthy soil and restoring degraded soil, and in The Complete Guide to Restoring Your Soil, he presents the science of soil, along with proven methods of restoring depleted soil and agricultural practices from around the world that continue to build soil, rather than cause it to deteriorate.

Strickler provides a solid foundation in the science of healthy soil, explaining how soil has become so degraded over time and the dire consequences for the human species, not just in terms of food scarcity but also the social, health, and environmental consequences of growing food in poor soil. He addresses the chemical, physical, and biological principles behind soil function, and presents actual farming practices that can be used to regenerate soil, techniques and strategies for remediating contaminated soil, and agriculture systems both past and present that functioned to build soil, such as the ancient chinampas systems of Mexico and the permaculture systems of today.

This publication conforms to the EPUB Accessibility specification at WCAG 2.0 Level AA.

Soil Health, Soil Biology, Soilborne Diseases and Sustainable Agriculture A Guide【電子書籍】[ Graham Stirling ]
|
Our capacity to maintain world food production depends heavily on the thin layer of soil covering the Earth's surface. The health of this soil determines whether crops can grow successfully, whether a farm business is profitable and whether an enterprise is sustainable in the long term. Farmers are generally aware of the physical and chemical factors that limit the productivity of their soils but often do not recognise that soil microbes and the soil fauna play a major role in achieving healthy soils and healthy crops. Soil Health, Soil Biology, Soilborne Diseases and Sustainable Agriculture provides readily understandable information about the bacteria, fungi, nematodes and other soil organisms that not only harm food crops but also help them take up water and nutrients and protect them from root diseases. Complete with illustrations and practical case studies, it provides growers and their consultants with holistic solutions for building an active and diverse soil biological community capable of improving soil structure, enhancing plant nutrient uptake and suppressing root pests and pathogens. The book is written by scientists with many years' experience developing sustainable crop production practices in the grains, vegetable, sugarcane, grazing and horticultural industries. This book will be useful for: growers, consultants, agronomists and soil chemists, extension personnel working in the grains, livestock, sugarcane and horticultural industries, professionals running courses in soil health/biological farming, and students taking university courses in soil science, ecology, microbiology, plant pathology and other biological sciences.

Albrecht on Soil Balancing【電子書籍】[ William Albrecht ]

This collection of essays reveals a carefully organized and convincing explanation by Albrecht about the interconnection between soil, plants and animals ? that everything is related to everything else. In these papers Albrecht reveals the importance of the balance equation, that it isn’t enough to have nutrient to soil connections, it is the ratio of one element to another that counts. Albrecht’s insight further reveals that an ounce of prevention in the form of balanced plant nutrition from fertile soils is better than a pound of cure using dangerous poisons. Albrecht’s work provides an indispensable foundation for anyone interested in sustainable, ecologically responsible agriculture.

More Fruitful Than the Soil Army, Empire and the Scottish Highlands, 1715-1815【電子書籍】[ Andrew MacKillop ]
|

This book analyses the origins, development and impact of British Army recruiting in the Scottish Highlands in the period from 1739 to 1815. It examines the interaction of government, landlords and tenantry. Recruiting is analysed within the context of rapid socio-economic change. The emphasis is on tenant reactions to recruiting, and the study concludes that this was a vital factor in bringing about change in the tenurial structure in the region. Both the decline of the tacksman and the emergence of crofting are linked to the process of regiment raising.

Military recruiting involved a clear recognition on the part of the Highland landlords and tenantry that the Empire and the 'fiscal military state' offered alternative sources of revenue. Both groups 'colonised' various levels of the state's military machine. As a result of this close involvement, the government remained a vital influence in the area well after 1745, and a major player in the region's economy. Recruiting was not simply a residue of clanship, rather it was a form of commercial activity, analogous to kelping.

A scientist’s manifesto addressing a soil loss crisis accelerated by poor conservation practices and climate change

This book by celebrated biologist Jo Handelsman lays bare the complex connections among climate change, soil erosion, food and water security, and drug discovery.

Humans depend on soil for 95 percent of global food production, yet let it erode at unsustainable rates. In the United States, China, and India, vast tracts of farmland will be barren of topsoil within this century. The combination of intensifying erosion caused by climate change and the increasing food needs of a growing world population is creating a desperate need for solutions to this crisis.

Writing for a nonspecialist audience, Jo Handelsman celebrates the capacities of soil and explores the soil-related challenges of the near future. She begins by telling soil’s origin story, explains how it erodes and the subsequent repercussions worldwide, and offers solutions. She considers lessons learned from indigenous people who have sustainably farmed the same land for thousands of years, practices developed for large-scale agriculture, and proposals using technology and policy initiatives.

The Silence Beneath the Soil Unearthing the Roots of the Forgotten Quarantine Town【電子書籍】[ Meredith Vaughn ]

A decade after the near-extinction of humanity by the Crimson Fever, Hollow’s Edge, once a quarantined Appalachian town, now stands as a macabre tourist trap. Managed by the shrewd Cynthia Andrews, it draws desensitized survivors craving a glimpse into the raw horror of the past. But beneath the staged displays and curated ghost stories, a darker truth festers, woven into the very soil itself.

Dr. Eliza Kane, a botanist studying post-catastrophe flora, arrives with detached scientific curiosity, drawn by the abnormally vibrant ecosystem thriving within the quarantine zone. Phosphorescent fungi, crimson lilies pulsating with unnatural lightーthe mutations hint at something far more sinister than adaptation. Hired by Cynthia to enhance the town’s morbid appeal, Eliza soon realizes the sweet, floral scent masking a metallic tang is a subtle warning: beauty here conceals a predatory nature.

Whispers from the town's few remaining elderly residents, like Elara Vance, whose eyes hold chilling secrets, unveil a quarantine far more brutal than history records. Mass graves lie hidden beneath a thriving orchard, fueled by hushed-up experiments on those immune to the Fever. The documented history is a tapestry of fear and fractured community.

Meanwhile, Joseph Brady, a stoic local haunted by his family’s role in the quarantine’s dark secrets, warns Eliza away, his cryptic pronouncements about disturbing the earth echoing the town's unresolved trauma. But as Eliza's discoveries escalate, Joseph, yearning for atonement, is drawn into her investigation.

The flora exhibits increasingly unsettling behavior. Vines reach, lilies glow hypnotically, the once-sweet scent turns cloying. The line between plant and animal blurs, the ecosystem gaining sentience, fueled by the countless bodies enriching the soil. Hollow’s Edge isn't haunted by ghosts; it’s being consumed by a new lifeform, a horrifying fusion of nature and death.

Eliza uncovers hidden tunnels, once used for moonshining, then repurposed as a clandestine laboratory for unspeakable experiments. Within these subterranean passages, mutated plant life intertwines with human remains, revealing a symbiotic relationship more sinister than anything imaginable.

Cynthia, her greed blinding her, offers Eliza a chilling choice: complicity or silence. The townsfolk, their eyes reflecting the flora’s unnatural glow, turn hostile, protecting their gruesome origins. Trapped between a powerful entrepreneur and a town seemingly possessed, Eliza must decide how
