Vertical 2: The Next Level of Hard and Soft Tissue Augmentation【電子書籍】[ Istvan Urban ]

In the author's bestselling first book, Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation: New Perspectives, published by Quintessence in 2017 and translated into 12 languages, the guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique was described in detail. This new publication, Vertical 2: The Next Level of Hard and Soft Tissue Augmentation, is a continuation of that book but at a more advanced level. Now, the author delves into the details where the devil lives, and shares information that has never been revealed before on the topic of vertical ridge augmentation. It is important to read this book armed with the knowledge from the first book as you will need it on this second journey with him. A major part of this book comprises full-color, step-by-step images of patient cases. At times, reading it is like watching a surgical video, where the author 'stops the video' to discuss with you, the reader, what he is thinking and doing at that step, what his next step will be, and the reason for it. Included again are the well-appreciated 'Lessons learned' sections, where the learning objectives are emphasized and further notes given, including ways to further improve the techniques. The section on the mandible is more detailed in this book, with the focus on larger defects and the different surgical steps in native, fibrotic, and scarred tissue types around the mental nerve during flap advancement. In addition, light is shed on the detail in treating the anterior maxilla, which has not been published previously. It includes treatment options such as the fast track, the safe track, and the technical track of soft tissue reconstruction in conjunction with bone grafting as well as papilla reconstructions after bone regeneration. The section on the posterior maxilla hopes to resolve issues such as the management and complications of combined ridge and sinus grafting, including difficulties such as the lack of buccal, crestal or nasal bony walls of the posterior maxilla before bone grafting. In this must-have new publication, the procedures are kept simple, repeatable, and biologically sound. The techniques presented are not overcomplicated; they are simple treatment strategies with lower complication rates and more predictability in the final outcome.

Clinical Labor Tissue Donors and Research Subjects in the Global Bioeconomy【電子書籍】[ Melinda Cooper ]

Forms of embodied labor, such as surrogacy and participation in clinical trials, are central to biomedical innovation, but they are rarely considered as labor. Melinda Cooper and Catherine Waldby take on that project, analyzing what they call "clinical labor," and asking what such an analysis might indicate about the organization of the bioeconomy and the broader organization of labor and value today. At the same time, they reflect on the challenges that clinical labor might pose to some of the founding assumptions of classical, Marxist, and post-Fordist theories of labor.

Cooper and Waldby examine the rapidly expanding transnational labor markets surrounding assisted reproduction and experimental drug trials. As they discuss, the pharmaceutical industry demands ever greater numbers of trial subjects to meet its innovation imperatives. The assisted reproductive market grows as more and more households look to third-party providers for fertility services and sectors of the biomedical industry seek reproductive tissues rich in stem cells. Cooper and Waldby trace the historical conditions, political economy, and contemporary trajectory of clinical labor. Ultimately, they reveal clinical labor to be emblematic of labor in twenty-first-century neoliberal economies.

Included as part of this meeting was a symposium on "Aging in Cell and Tissue Culture." This volume contains the papers presented at that symposium. The use of cell and tissue culture techniques to study the mechanism of aging is not new. For example, it has long been known that age-associated changes which occur in plasma can inhibit cell proliferation in vitro; also that the time lapse prior to cell migration from ex planted tissue fragments increases with increasing age. These are both examples of the expression in vitro of aging in vivo. More recently, attention has been focused on the occurrence of senescence in vitro. These investi gations have included studies of alterations in non dividing cell cultures, and to a somewhat greater extent, of age-related changes in the proliferative capacity of cells in vitro. For example, cells derived from human fetal lung retain many properties of normal cells including a stable normal diploid karyotype and these cultures have been shown to have a limited life-span in vitro. In addi tion, cultures derived from human adult lung show the same normal characteristics and appear to have a shorter life span than cells derived from fetal lung.

Craniofacial Development The Tissue and Molecular Interactions That Control Development of the Head【電子書籍】[ Philippa H. Francis-West ]

Craniofacial development is a multistep and intricate process initially involving a number of inductive interactions that control neural and neural crest development, which are followed by a series of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that control outgrowth, patterning, and skeletal differentiation. Certain aspects of craniofacial development are unique developmental processes in higher vertebrates. First, in higher vertebrates the cranial neural crest, in contrast to the trunk neural crest, gives rise to the skeletal structures. These skeletal elements include those comprising mem brane bone and secondary cartilage, which with the exception of the clavicle are tissue types found exclusively in the head in higher vertebrates. Second, with the exception of the tongue, the origin of the musculature is distinct from other regions of the body. The body and tongue muscles are formed from the segmented epithelial somites whilst the head musculature is formed from unsegmented paraxial and prechordal mesoderm. Furthermore, the signalling cascades that control myogenic differentia tion appear to be distinct as determined by gene expression and the response of myogenic cells to growth factors. Finally, the neurogenic placodes, which give rise to the sensory organs and some cranial ganglia, are only found in the head. Over recent years, there have been significant advances in our knowledge of the molecular proc esses that control craniofacial development in a number of animal models. This has given insight into the genes that control many aspects of head development from the initial induction of the head to the final stages of differentiation.

Magnetic resonance imaging has already become a most valuable imaging modality in the diagnostic work-up of musculoskeletal neoplasms. While high accuracy of MRI for staging purposes has been proven, we will focus in this monograph on the characterization of primary bone and soft tissue tumors by MRI. The major purpose of this monograph is to provide an atlas of magnetic resonance features of primary bone and soft tissue tumors for radiologists, orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists. The results presented are based on investigations of 94 primary bone and soft tissue tumors and mimicking conditions by magnetic resonance imaging. Although the scale of the material allows for statistical handling, the number of patients per subgroup is too small to come to definite conclusions. We will therefore limit ourselves to the description of and comments on a great number of cases to illustrate the diagnostic potential of this new imaging modality. We would like to thank the anonymous cooperators: referring clinicians, pathologists, nurses, technicians and secretaries whose help enabled us to present this monograph. We would also like to express our gratitude to the firms Siemens AG and Schering AG for technical support.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

Man's survival is constantly threatened--by bacteria, by physical and chemical injury, and by a host of other agents. Although modern science and medicine have done much to cope with these harmful influences, our greatest protection is still afforded by the ability of our bodies to withstand these repeated attacks. If the combination of science and natural resistance is unable to ward off the damaging influences, disease will result. The study of disease and of alterations in function caused by disease is called pathology. Frequently considered in this field are such topics as the cause of the disease, the effect of the disease on the body, and the body's reaction to the disease process.

This course is designed to acquaint you with the fundamental concepts of oral and maxillofacial pathology. It also seeks to familiarize you with the technical nomenclature used in pathology, which is essential to properly understanding dental procedures. It also stresses the cause and effect of oral infection.

This course is part of our Dentistry series.

Includes a questions and answers section at the end of each lesson.

Full illustrations and diagrams included.

Lessons:

- Diseases of the Hard Tissue
- Diseases of the Soft Tissue
- Fractures and Dislocation of the Jaw
