Haunted Philadelphia Famous Phantoms, Sinister Sites, and Lingering Legends【電子書籍】[ Darcy Oordt ]

Philadelphia is known for many things: brotherly love, Revolutionary history, passionate sports fans, cheesesteaks, and Rocky are merely a few of them. But the Founding Fathers didn’t just walk the streets of Philadelphia 200 years ago, many still walk here…or so the story goes. Along the streets of Philadelphia you can find the ghosts of Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, Alexander Hamilton, and Edgar Allen Poe. But those are only the famous ones. There are a few less known ghosts creeping around the historic streets.

Nearby Fort Mifflin certainly has its share of hauntings, given its long history of sheltering soldiers and holding prisoners from the Revolutionary War up to the Civil War. And given all the cemeteries that have been established and then relocated--or not--it's almost a given that thousands of disturbed graves might stir up a ghost or two.

|

Benjamin Franklin's "Experiments and Observations on Electricity Made at Philadelphia in America" stands as a landmark contribution to the early understanding of electrical phenomena in the 18th century. Written in an accessible yet scientifically rigorous style, Franklin's work amalgamates methodical experimentation with narrative flair, appealing to both the learned and the lay reader. The text is distinguished for its firsthand accounts of groundbreaking experiments, including the famous kite experiment, which not only illuminated the nature of electricity but also laid foundational principles for its study, ushering in an era of scientific inquiry during the Enlightenment. Benjamin Franklin, a polymath known for his insatiable curiosity and innovative spirit, explored many fields, from politics to printing. His experiences as a statesman, inventor, and scientist provided him with a unique perspective that deeply influenced his approach to scientific discourse. Franklin's engagement with contemporary scientific thought, coupled with his own inventive experiments, reflects a desire to bridge technical knowledge with everyday life, making the complexities of science accessible to a broader audience. I highly recommend "Experiments and Observations on Electricity" to anyone intrigued by the origins of electrical science and its implications for modern technology. The Spirit of Philadelphia A Call to Recover the Founding Principles【電子書籍】[ Chris Gibson ]
|

The Spirit of Philadelphia is America’s story told through the history of ideas and a cautionary tale of what happens when a nation’s Spirit goes dormant.

This book proposes a return of the American government to the philosophical roots as articulated by the U.S. Constitution and its Framers. Grounded in realism, the Founders successfully balanced the needs and rights of the individual with those of the collective, creating a system that prioritized both personal liberty and societal order. Author and former Congressman Chris Gibson argues that abandoning the “Spirit of Philadelphia” (essentially the national spirit of cooperation, compromise, and teamwork) enabled dysfunction in government and disillusionment in the constituency. Culminating a comprehensive list of policy recommendations that logically analyze issues in the American political system, the author proposes an agenda aimed at restoring faith and functionality in national institutions and leaders, fostering bipartisan communication and collaboration, and revitalizing civic engagement at the individual level.

Illustrating the changes in the political landscape of America since the Philadelphia convention, this book is an important read for students of democracy, political participation, elections, and voter behavior.

SING WHAT Poems of Philadelphia【電子書籍】[ Ernest Yates ]

This is Ernest Yates’s seventeenth volume of poems, and the fourteenth volume in an ongoing series based on his wanderings through Philadelphia streets. So the city is a human habitat, a shared home. Still it’s impossible to know Philadelphia’s hundred neighborhoods; impossible as well to know their significance. What dreams, what flimsy speculations the imagination conceives?of itself and of its place?as it ponders this unknowable scene, this physical realm, this body of the city. By itself the physical detail speaks a dreary idiom, harsh and flat; but the wonder of its mystery may give rise to melody, a tuneful song of the possible. For whatever else it is, whatever it may be, over and over again the city proves it is there. Dreaming, we know it is there.

America's Tea Parties Not One but Four! Boston, Charleston, New York, Philadelphia【電子書籍】[ Marissa Moss ]

This account written for children is “a very fine piece of historical reclamation that broadens our understanding of the road to revolution.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

America’s Tea Parties: Not One But Four! is the first nonfiction picture book to ever share that New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston each had their own tea party that took place around the same time as Boston’s. America’s Tea Parties provides background on the English taxation on the colonies, with emphasis on the people who stood up for their rights against the tyranny of the British as ships from the East India Company pulled into their harbors. It explains the Stamp and Tea Acts, the larger social and political issues that the colonies were having with England, why it was crucial that these tea parties happened, and the revolution that the tea demonstrations led to. This well-researched, eye-catching, entertaining, and informative volume is filled with archival illustrations and is great for primary research and as a read-aloud. It will surprise social studies classrooms, shake up US history curriculum, and delight American studies fans as New York, Boston, and Charleston finally join Boston in tea party fame. Award-winning and bestselling author Marissa Moss describes in detail the resilience and determination of the peoples of all four colonies. America’s Tea Parties comes complete with a timeline, a bibliography, a fully searchable index, and an author’s note that explains exactly how the author found this incredible little-told story of the tea parties that changed American history forever.

“Moss . . . delves into America’s past, digging beneath the veneer of textbook accounts to reveal nuanced, lesser-known angles of a historical event.” ーPublisher's Weekly

“. . . The historical accounts are expertly told, and readers will be easily drawn in... The Heads of Cerberus A Dystopian Journey Through Philadelphia's Divided Cities【電子書籍】[ Francis Stevens ]
|

In "The Heads of Cerberus," Francis Stevens weaves a compelling narrative that intertwines elements of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure, set against the backdrop of a dystopian Philadelphia. Written in the early 20th century, the novel showcases Stevens' keen ability to blend rich, vivid imagery with intricate plotting, reflective of the speculative fiction genre's burgeoning interest during this era. The story follows the protagonist as they navigate a multi-dimensional world dominated by the arcane and the fantastical, exploring themes of identity, power, and morality through an imaginative lens that presages later works in the genre. Francis Stevens, a pioneering female author who faced the constraints of her time, was known for her contributions to early science fiction, often drawing on her understanding of the complexities of societal expectations and personal freedom. Her unique perspective as a woman in a male-dominated literary sphere endowed her works with subtleties that explore the intersections of gender and genre, making her an essential figure in the development of speculative fiction. For readers yearning for innovative narratives that challenge the boundaries of reality and genre, "The Heads of Cerberus" is an essential read. Stevens' imaginative prowess and thematic depth invite contemporary audiences to engage with a world that is both eerily familiar and unnaturally strange, rendering it a timeless exploration of the human condition.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is a heterogeneous disease that impacts a significant portion of the population. Specific subtypes of the disease include cystic fibrosis, allergic fungal sinusitis, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease. Unfortunately, the majority of patients with CRSwNP do not fall within one of these subtypes, and have variable responses to medical and surgical treatment. There are rapidly evolving theories describing the etiology of CRSwNP that involve alterations in innate immunity, acquired dysfunction of respiratory epithelial cells, and external or environmental factors. This book provides a comprehensive update on the latest theories on the etiology of CRSwNP as well as a review of innovative and effective medical and surgical therapies. Special thanks go to D.W. Kennedy, Philadelphia, Pa., for contributing the foreword. Contemporary Bohemia: A Case Study of an Artistic Community in Philadelphia【電子書籍】[ Geoffrey Moss ]
|

This book presents an investigation and assessment of an artistic community that emerged within Philadelphia’s Fishtown and the nearby neighborhood of Kensington. The book starts out by examining historical and sociological work on bohemia, and then provides a detailed history of greater Philadelphia and the Fishtown/Kensington region. After analyzing the ways in which Fishtown/Kensington’s artistic community maintains continuity with bohemian tradition, it demonstrates that this community has decoupled traditional bohemian practices from their anti-bourgeois foundation. The book also demonstrates that this community helped generate and maintains overlapping membership with a larger community of hipsters. It concludes by defining the area's artistic community as an artistic bohemian lifestyle community, and argues that the artistic activities and cultural practices exhibited by the community are not unique, and have significant implications for urban artistic policy, and for post-industrial urban society.

Momma's Boy A Philadelphia Story【電子書籍】[ Ellington St. John ]
|

Momma’s Boy is set in a mixed, but predominantly black South Philadelphia enclave, during the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s. This story revolves around the lower-middle class family of Regina Sonnesta Lacet, who instantly becomes the matriarch and stern ruler over her four younger sisters, when their mother dies, during a simple D&C procedure a month before she could tell her that she would soon become a grandmother. Regina’s one and only son Tory, by all accounts is an exceptional child. At age five, his mother told him a secret that he had to keep from everyone, including her much older husband, Teddy Lacet. The boy loved Teddy and vice versa. But, the boy loathes and is terrified of the verbal and physical abuse that is occasionally bestows on his mother, when Teddy drinks and has flashbacks to something that happened while in the Navy. Self-professed, Virginia, country-boy, Teddy Lacet is proud of a very bright son that has most of his mother’s features and is growing leaps and bounds. Only Teddy’s oldest sister produced any children. Teddy was extremely proud of his miracle child and showed him off every chance he got. Regina, the oldest Sonnesta sister, promised her deceased mother, that she would look after all of her sisters and see that the three youngest girls would graduate from high school. Regina took her strict, no-nonsense and consistent disciplinary attitude from her mother. She applied it to her grown and teenage sisters, as well as her young son. She commanded the reverent respect of all that knew her, although she only stood five feet two inches tall. But the knowledge, character and common sense that she possessed accompanied with the way that she carried herself made her a force to be reckoned with. Tory’s intelligence and demeanor increased with his rapid growth. He also learned at a very early age that his good looks, manners and being smart was rewarding. Good looks and advanced growth was the main reason that he was engaged in having sex at an early age. He was actually much smarter than any of his family members or teachers knew, because he had a memory that was like a tape recorder. There were times when Tory would do or say logical things that were astonishing, because no one expected such logical thinking coming from someone so young. But, what was more amazing was what he kept to himself. Regina knew that if she didn’t put the fear of God in him and discipline him at a very early age, he would suffer the consequences of the streets and or the penal system. When Teddy had flashbacks and memories about his Navy days, Regina felt boxed-in and trapped, she coped, but had a plan. To Regina, Tory was the only thing that mattered and she was willing to deceive, lie, coerce and even kill, if it meant making a better world for her only child. Although she was an extremely a strict disciplinarian, she created and was raising a Momma’s Boy like no other.

In "The Treaty Held with the Indians of the Six Nations at Philadelphia, in July 1742," the authors capture a pivotal moment in colonial American history through a meticulously detailed account of the negotiations between British authorities and Native American leaders. This document not only chronicles the proceedings of the treaty but also reflects the complex interplay of diplomacy, power dynamics, and cultural exchanges between indigenous tribes and colonial powers. The formal language and structured dialogue highlight the importance of oratory in both sets of participants, presenting a vivid depiction of an often-overlooked aspect of early American socio-political life. The collaborative authorship of this treaty underscores a diverse representation of perspectives during a time marked by conflict and cooperation. By chronicling the treaty's emergence in the context of ongoing territorial tensions, the contributors may have been influenced by their experiences witnessing the fragile alliances that defined colonial expansion'??s impact on Native affairs. Their intimate knowledge of both Native cultures and colonial governance methodologies provides invaluable insights into the motivations and expectations surrounding this treaty. This book serves as a vital primary source for historians and readers interested in understanding the intricate relationships between settlers and indigenous populations. It is a highly recommended addition to any library focused on American history, Indigenous studies, or the formation of early American diplomatic relations.

The Roots of Educational Inequality Philadelphia's Germantown High School, 1907-2014【電子書籍】[ Erika M. Kitzmiller ]
|

The Roots of Educational Inequality chronicles the transformation of one American high school over the course of the twentieth century to explore the larger political, economic, and social factors that have contributed to the escalation of educational inequality in modern America.

In 1914, when Germantown High School officially opened, Martin G. Brumbaugh, the superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, told residents that they had one of the finest high schools in the nation. Located in a suburban neighborhood in Philadelphia's northwest corner, the school provided Germantown youth with a first-rate education and the necessary credentials to secure a prosperous future. In 2013, almost a century later, William Hite, the city's superintendent, announced that Germantown High was one of thirty-seven schools slated for closure due to low academic achievement. How is it that the school, like so many others that serve low-income students of color, transformed in this way?

Erika M. Kitzmiller links the saga of a single high school to the history of its local community, its city, and the nation. Through a fresh, longitudinal examination that combines deep archival research and spatial analysis, Kitzmiller challenges conventional declension narratives that suggest American high schools have moved steadily from pillars of success to institutions of failures. Instead, this work demonstrates that educational inequality has been embedded in our nation's urban high schools since their founding. The book argues that urban schools were never funded adequately. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, urban school districts lacked the tax revenues needed to operate their schools. Rather than raising taxes, these school districts relied on private philanthropy from families and communities to subsidize a lack of government aid. Over time, this philanthropy disappeared leaving urban schools with inadequate funds and exacerbating the level of educational inequality.

During that time there were no playgrounds, so children had only the street in front of their home or the buildings to play in and around.
To millions of loyal readers, Myron Kane was a great man, a genius, a truth-teller. But to everyone who knew him personally, Myron Kane was a man with the touch of death, whose razor-edged pen could destroy a reputation, a life, a soul -- and never hesitated to do so. It was no surprise, then, that somebody decided to prove once and for all that a knife, if buried in human flesh, could be far deadlier than a pen...

Experiments and Observations on Electricity Made at Philadelphia in America Pioneering Electricity Experiments in Colonial America【電子書籍】[ Benjamin Franklin ]
|

In "Experiments and Observations on Electricity Made at Philadelphia in America," Benjamin Franklin presents a groundbreaking exploration of electrical phenomena through a series of experiments that fuse empirical scientific inquiry with an engaging narrative style. Written during the Enlightenment, a period characterized by a burgeoning interest in science and rational thought, Franklin's work employs meticulous observation and experimentation to demystify electricity, challenging existing theories and establishing foundational principles that would influence future scientific discourse. The epistolary format, enriched by personal anecdotes, provides both clarity and accessibility, making complex concepts approachable for readers of varying backgrounds. Franklin, a polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was profoundly influenced by the scientific advancements of his time and his own diverse experiences as a writer, inventor, and diplomat. His self-taught background and pragmatic approach to knowledge fostered a relentless curiosity that drove him to investigate the forces of nature, particularly electricity. Franklin's intrinsic desire to serve both his community and the scientific community inspired him to publish his findings in order to disseminate knowledge and encourage further inquiry. I highly recommend "Experiments and Observations on Electricity" to anyone interested in the origins of modern science, the interplay between experimentation and theoretical understanding, or the remarkable life of Franklin himself. This influential work not only chronicles an important chapter in scientific history but also invites readers to marvel at the wonders of the natural world through the eyes of one of its most perceptive observers.
