This book discusses early-modern collective identities related to territory, language, cultural milieu, state, and alleged "ethnic" origins in the border and multilingual areas of Friuli and the County of Gorizia before the rise of nineteenth - century nationalisms. It analyzes the perception of the Other, especially "barbaric" peoples and the early-modern Slovenian-speaking population, from the viewpoint of patriotisms of various types. These aspects greatly and in various ways influenced the perception of "others," which raises questions of linguistic and alleged "ethnic" otherness. Due to the multilingual environment of the border area studied, these topics display a very complex image. The volume is based on the analysis of an extensive number of early-modern historiographic works.

The Stones of Venice (Vol. 1-3) Study of Venetian Architecture【電子書籍】[ John Ruskin ]

In "The Stones of Venice," John Ruskin offers a profound exploration of architecture, art, and the moral underpinnings of society. This multi-volume work deftly combines vivid descriptions, detailed analyses, and historical insights, delving deep into the construction and aesthetics of Venetian architecture as a reflection of cultural values. Ruskin employs an evocative literary style rich in metaphor and symbolism, illuminating how the intricate details of buildings inspire both moral contemplation and societal critique. Its context emerges from the Victorian era's fascination with art and history, against the backdrop of burgeoning industrialization that threatened traditional craftsmanship. John Ruskin, a pivotal figure in the Victorian art movement, was an ardent advocate for craftsmanship and the beauty of nature, deeply influenced by his environmental convictions and a reverence for medieval artistry. His extensive travels in Europe, particularly his admiration for Venice, fueled his belief that architecture is a moral and philosophical reflection of its time. Ruskin's commitment to social reform and his concern for the decline of artisan craftsmanship are evident throughout this work, as he seeks to reconnect art with ethical living. Readers seeking a rich, interdisciplinary examination of architecture and its role in society will find "The Stones of Venice" an indispensable tome. Ruskin'??s eloquence and passionate advocacy for aesthetic and moral values resonate with contemporary issues in art and culture, making this seminal work a critical read for anyone interested in the intersections of art history, philosophy, and social criticism.

Arms and the Woman Classical Tradition and Women Writers in the Venetian Renaissance【電子書籍】[ Francesca D'Alessandro Behr ]

Arms and the Woman: Classical Tradition and Women Writers in the Venetian Renaissance by Francesca D’Alessandro Behr focuses on the classical reception in the works of female authors active in Venice during the Early Modern Age. Even in this relatively liberal city, women had restricted access to education and were subject to deep-seated cultural prejudices, but those who read and wrote were able, in part, to overcome those limitations.

In this study, Behr explores the work of Moderata Fonte and Lucrezia Marinella and demonstrates how they used knowledge of texts by Virgil, Ovid, and Aristotle to systematically reanalyze the biased patterns apparent both in the romance epic genre and contemporary society. Whereas these classical texts were normally used to bolster the belief in female inferiority and the status quo, Fonte and Marinella used them to envision societies structured according to new, egalitarian ethics. Reflecting on the humanist representation of virtue, Fonte and Marinella insisted on the importance of peace, mercy, and education for women. These authors took up the theme of the equality of genders and participated in the Renaissance querelle des femmes, promoting women’s capabilities and nature.

Venetian Renaissance Fortifications in the Mediterranean【電子書籍】[ Drago? Cosmescu ]

The Renaissance was a revolution of ideas, arts and sciences alike, with Italy at its center. Venice was among the first states to embrace new concepts in fortification, which would dominate military architecture for centuries. In the age of large galley fleets and an expanding Ottoman Empire, the mighty defenses of the Republic of Venice protected faraway territories in the Mediterranean, and some of the largest and best preserved Renaissance fortifications are found on the former Venetian islands.

This book illustrates in detail the impressive defenses of Cyprus, Crete and Corfu, their design and their war record. Walled towns and fortresses were constructed to the latest standards of military technology, with walls capable of withstanding the largest armies and the longest sieges, including the longest in history--22 years.

The Memoirs Of Jacques Casanova De Seingalt, The Venetian Years - The Original Classic Edition【電子書籍】[ Casanova Giacomo ]

A series of adventures wilder and more fantastic than the wildest of romances, written down with the exactitude of a business diary; a view of men and cities from Naples to Berlin, from Madrid and London to Constantinople and St. Petersburg; the vie intime of the eighteenth century depicted by a man, who to-day sat with cardinals and saluted crowned heads, and to morrow lurked in dens of profligacy and crime; a book of confessions penned without reticence and without penitence; a record of forty years of occult charlatanism; a collection of tales of successful imposture, of bonnes fortunes, of marvellous escapes, of transcendent audacity, told with the humour of Smollett and the delicate wit of Voltaire. Who is there interested in men and letters, and in the life of the past, who would not cry, Where can such a book as this be found?

Yet the above catalogue is but a brief outline, a bare and meagre summary, of the book known as THE MEMOIRS OF CASANOVA; a work absolutely unique in literature. He who opens these wonderful pages is as one who sits in a theatre and looks across the gloom, not on a stage-play, but on another and a vanished world. The curtain draws up, and suddenly years are rolled away, and in bright light stands out before us the whole life of the past; the gay dresses, the polished wit, the careless morals, and all the revel and dancing of those merry years before the mighty deluge of the Revolution. The palaces and marble stairs of old Venice are no longer desolate, but thronged with scarlet-robed senators, prisoners with the doom of the Ten upon their heads cross the Bridge of Sighs, at dead of night the nun slips out of the convent gate to the dark canal where a gondola is waiting, we assist at the parties fines of cardinals, and we see the bank made at faro. Venice gives place to the assembly rooms of Mrs. Cornely and the fast taverns of the London of 1760; we pass from Versailles to the Winter Palace of St. Petersburg in the days of Catherine, from the policy of the Great Frederick to the lewd mirth of strolling-players, and the presence-chamber of the Vatican is succeeded by an intrigue in a garret. It is indeed a new experience to read this history of a man who, refraining from nothing, has concealed nothing. The friend of popes and kings and noblemen, and of all the male and female ruffians and vagabonds of Europe, abbe, soldier, charlatan, gamester, financier, diplomatist, viveur, philosopher, virtuoso, chemist, fiddler, and buffoon, each of these, and all of these was Giacomo Casanova, Chevalier de Seingalt, Knight of the Golden Spur.

And not only are the Memoirs a literary curiosity; they are almost equally curious from a bibliographical point of view. The manuscript was written in French and came into the possession of the publisher Brockhaus, of Leipzig, who had it translated into German, and printed. From this German edition, M. Aubert de Vitry re-translated the work into French, but omitted about a fourth of the matter, and this mutilated and worthless version is frequently purchased by unwary bibliophiles. In the year 1826, however, Brockhaus, in order presumably to protect his property, printed the entire text of the original MS. in French, for the first time, and in this complete form, containing a large number of anecdotes and incidents not to be found in the spurious version, the work was not acceptable to the authorities, and was consequently rigorously suppressed. Only a few copies sent out for presentation or for review are known to have escaped, and from one of these rare copies the present translation has been made and solely for private circulation.

In conclusion, both translator and editeur have done their utmost to present the English Casanova in a dress worthy of the wonderful and witty original.

Crisis and Change in the Venetian Economy in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries【

The decline of Venice remains one of the classic episodes in the economic development of modern Europe. Its contrasts are familiar enough: the wealthiest commercial power in fifteenth-century Europe, the strongest western colonial power in the eastern Mediterranean, found its principal fame three centuries later in carnival and the arts. This metamorphosis from commercial hegemony to fashionable pleasure and landed wealth was, however, a complex process. It resulted not so much from the Portuguese voyages of discovery at the beginning of the sixteenth century as from increasing Dutch adn English competition at its end, and from industrial competition chiefly from beyond the Mediterranean.

Several of the Articles Dr Pullan has chosen to illustrate these changes are made available in English for the first time, and two have been revised for this book. Four deal with the fortunes of entrepot trade and shipbuilding, which had furnished the basis of Venetian wealth adn influence in the Middle Ages; four others expamine the new fields of enterprise which Venice explored in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and which helped to compensate for the decline in traditional activities. This classic book was first published in 1968.

The Painter and the Poisoned Canvas A Venetian Conspiracy【電子書籍】[ Angela Pierce ]

Venice: a city of breathtaking art and whispered secrets. Sofia Conti, a fiercely independent artist, defies tradition with her shockingly realistic canvases, earning the scorn of the Venetian elite. Her talent unexpectedly wins her a prestigious commission to paint frescoes for the Doge's palazzo, a chance to finally shatter the constraints of convention. But her triumph masks a chilling conspiracy.

Unbeknownst to Sofia, her vibrant pigments, sourced from a mysterious apothecary, harbor a deadly secret: a rare, slow-acting poison. Each brushstroke becomes an instrument of assassination, mirroring the inexplicable maladies afflicting Venice's most powerful. Rumors of cursed art and a painter touched by the devil swirl through the canals.

Lorenzo Vitale, the Doge's Whisperer, a nobleman stripped of his title and family by a brutal betrayal, sees the unsettling pattern. The illnesses align with Sofia's art with unnerving precision, hinting at a sinister code, a language of death wielded by a clandestine society known as the Signori del Coloreーthe Lords of Color.

Bound by a shared sense of unease, Sofia and Lorenzo find their paths converging in Venice's labyrinthine heart. Sofia, initially wary, recognizes Lorenzo’s sharp intellect, while Lorenzo finds himself captivated by Sofia's fiery spirit and dedication to her art, a spark igniting within the ashes of his past.

Their investigation plunges them into a world of hidden passageways and clandestine meetings, peeling back the gilded fa?ade of Venetian society to reveal the rot beneath. As they uncover the Signori del Colore's far-reaching influence, they stumble upon a shocking connection to Lorenzo’s tragic past, transforming his quest into a burning desire for vengeance.

Amidst the shadows and secrets, a forbidden romance blossoms, a dangerous vulnerability the Signori del Colore are eager to exploit. As the annual Venetian Carnival approaches, a sinister plot unfolds beneath the vibrant festivities. The Signori del Colore prepare their final masterpiece, a grand tableau of death designed to solidify their control over Venice.

With the fate of Venice hanging in the balance, Sofia and Lorenzo race against time to decipher the final layer of the artistic code, a desperate gamble to expose the truth before the Carnival descends into chaos. Their pursuit culminates in a heart-pounding confrontation at the masked ball, a dramatic unveiling that will shake the foundations of Venetian society. But victory comes at a cost, forcing them to choose between duty and love, between the city they saved and a future free from the shadows of the past.

Claudio Monteverdi’s Venetian Operas Sources, Performance, Interpretation【

Claudio Monteverdi’s Venetian Operas features chapters by a group of scholars and performers of varied backgrounds and specialties, who confront the various questions raised by Monteverdi’s late operas from an interdisciplinary perspective. The premise of the volume is the idea that constructive dialogue between musicologists and musicians, stage directors and theater historians, as well as philologists and literary critics can shed new light on Monteverdi’s two Venetian operas (and their respective librettos, by Badoaro and Busenello), not only at the levels of textual criticism, historical exegesis, and dramaturgy, but also with regard to concrete choices of performance, staging, and mise-en-sc?ne. Following an Introduction setting up the interdisciplinary agenda, the volume comprises two main parts: ‘Contexts and Sources’ deals with the historical, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts of the works - librettos and scores; 'Performance and Interpretation’ offers critical and historical insights regarding the casting, singing, reciting, staging, and conducting of the two operas. This volume will appeal to scholars and researchers in Opera Studies and Music History as well as be of interest to early music performers and all those involved with presenting opera on stage.

Venetian Born is a story about friendshipーan unlikely friendship between two very different boys with very similar names; Piero Caesar Alberti, raised on a Lido farm before being moved to a backwater port town to work at an inn, and Giulio Caesar Alberti, born into the second highest class of Venezia and in training at the Ducal Palace to be a Secretary-Ambassador if not Secretary to the Ten like his father. These were real characters, in the flesh, ones who did exist in that exact time, and lived, studied, or worked in those exact places the author, Andy Burtis, describes: He knows, for he has stayed in the same inn at Malamocco that Piero worked in before sailing off to Holland and America in his second and third books of the trilogy of these characters’ Bildungsroman.

His researchers, one a Ph.D in Venetian History from Princeton, the other from Padova who specializes in the Alberti families of Venice, have brought life from the archives like sculptors working on solid stone. On his part, he stayed enough ahead of them to lead their research, mostly with what he found in Alan Hinds voluminous ‘Calendar of State Papers’ related to Venetian Affairs, where he found mention of Giulio’s family situation at the time of Giulio’s father’s imprisonment. Imagine his excitement at hearing from his researchers that they found what he was hoping for from what he had learned about the character of Giulio’s fatherーthat Andrea Alberti was framed by the same witnesses as a famous noble of the time. In fact, Giulio's father was exonerated of treason just after the famous ambassador, the Cavaliere Antonio Foscarini, in 1623. Truth indeed, can not only embellish, but actually trump fiction. And it can be something to look forward to.

Now add to this the charm of Venice itself where all this plays out, which can never be just a background but cries out like the stones, like this novel's children, to be seen and heard, and appreciated: The Grand Canal as negotiated by Giulio’s family gondolier, Romano, The Ducal Palace with all its secret chambers and gilded halls and staircases, salons great as the Consiglio Maggiore Giulio attends and as small as that where Fiamo gives his testimony at the trial of the Doge Mocenigo's son for murdering Cecco's only daughter who was picking berries to take him. Laugh at the farcical attempt of Giulio to take notes of all that was deliberated at the Senate as part of his secretarial training.

Indeed, intrigue veritably oozes out of walls studded with the lion’s heads that hear every word. Imagine the sunrise on the lagoon that Piero would see on his way to work in his Uncle Giobbo's produce boat. Imagine the immense Arsenale from the vantage point of a nine-year-old Piero who has decided to become the ships carpenter and caulker. Picture the Rialto where Giobbo drops off the Lido's produce before going up to the Basilica San Marco's rafters to hear the great Monteverdi conduct his practice sessions and aping those melodies on his violin.

Thumb through the pages to find pictures of the palazzi of Venice like the medieval castle converted into the Fondaco dei Turchi where Giulio does the books for his nefarious uncle to learn the Eastern Trade, and meets the wild-eyed Turkish boy dubbed ‘Ji’ for the Jihadi he always talks about back home in his ‘Islambol.’ And of course, there are always the dungeons where the beloved members of each boy’s family wind up, and where Piero runs messages to and from those waiting so anxiously to hear some news, any news…. Finally, discover the value of Venice to the world, its character so often marginalized to stories of romance and masquerade. Learn what made it not just an oligarchy but a republic strong enough to inspire countries like England, Holland, France, even America with its freedoms, longevity, and industry.

History of the Venetian Republic【電子書籍】[ W. CAREW HAZLITT ]

The ancient Italian province of Venetia is of interest to us in the present inquiry as the source to which the first Venetians looked as the home of their fathers or of their own youth. It was a region of Northern Italy, which extended from the foot of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea; but its boundaries seem to have undergone changes. After its subjugation by the Romans, Venetia was considered as forming part of Cisalpine Gaul. The people are described as a commercial, rather than a warlike, community; and it is a curious circumstance that they displayed in their dress, like their insular descendants, a predilection for black. An immense amount of confusion has arisen in the accounts of this country and its inhabitants by a failure to discriminate with proper care between the Veneti of America and their Adriatic namesakes. The former were remarkable for their proficiency in martial pursuits and their brave resistance to the Roman legions and navy; yet it is at the same time questionable whether the trade in amber conducted by Greeks and Phoenicians between Western Europe and the Baltic does not really belong to the Transalpine Veneti, who are also more likely to be the people among whom Herodotus relates that it was a custom to sell their marriageable daughters by auction.
There seems to be some plausibility in the suggestion that a colony passing in the course of migration from their native soil to Asia Minor, proceeded thence, in process of time, to Northern Italy, on the shores of which they formed numerous settlements. These colonists were called Tyrrhenians or Etruscans; they became the founders, at successive periods, of Spina at the mouth of the Po, and Hadria or Hatria in its vicinity, both of which attained the highest degree of commercial prosperity. No vestiges of the former are now visible, though the name may seem to have survived in the islet of Spinalunga, a later alluvial formation. The gradual deposits of nature have had the effect of removing Hadria to a distance of more than fourteen miles from that sea on which it once stood, and which still bears its nameーthe Hadria iracunda of Horace. Nor has the decline been recent; for even in the time of the Romans these places presented little more than the shadow of their pristine greatness...

Their marriage in the mid-sixteenth century might be regarded as emblematic of the Venetian experience, with the metropole at the center of a fragmented empire: a Terraferma nobleman and the daughter of a Venetian senator, who raised their family in far off Crete in the stato da mar, in Venice itself, and in the Friuli and the Veneto in the stato da terra. The fortunes and misfortunes of the nine surviving Della Torre children and their descendants, tracked through the end of the Republic in 1797, are likewise emblematic of a change in feudal culture from clan solidarity to individualism and intrafamily strife, and ultimately, redemption. Despite the efforts by both the Della Torre and the Bembo families to preserve the patrimony through a succession of male heirs, the last survivor in the paternal bloodline of each was a daughter. This epic tale highlights the role of women in creating family networks and opens a precious window into a contentious period in which Venetian republican values clash with the deeply rooted feudal traditions of honor and blood feuds of the mainland.

Venetian Life Illustrated Edition【電子書籍】[ William Dean Howells ]

A large part of Howell's time in Venice was given up to a critical study of life in that city, and in his "Venetian Life," which appeared in 1866, he has given to the world the result of his observation and study. The book abounds in dainty pen pictures of the beauties of Venice ; as he tells us of the Grand canal, we can almost hear the dipping paddles of passing gondolas, and the barcarolle wafted on the evening breeze. It may seem almost sacrilege to lovers of the old legends, that he explains away the romanticism of the Doge's palace, and denominates the Bridge of Sighs a " pathetic swindle". The book's finish was such as to reveal the highly interesting literary individuality of the author.

The Stones of Venice Study of Venetian Architecture【電子書籍】[ John Ruskin ]

In 'The Stones of Venice,' John Ruskin explores the intricate relationship between architecture, society, and morality, presenting a comprehensive critique of Venetian Gothic architecture. Through rich descriptions and detailed illustrations, Ruskin examines the aesthetic principles underlying the city's edifices and their cultural significance. The book stands as a manifesto for the importance of craftsmanship and beauty in architecture, juxtaposing the splendor of Venice with the emerging industrial practices of his time. Written in a highly ornate and poetic style, Ruskin'??s work transcends mere architectural criticism, delving into philosophical reflections on art and its moral implications, thus rooting the narrative firmly within the Victorian context of art appreciation and social critique. John Ruskin (1819-1900), a prominent art critic, social thinker, and leading figure of the Victorian era, was deeply influenced by his experiences in Venice and his passion for art. His travels in Italy profoundly impacted his understanding of aesthetic beauty and its alignment with ethical living. Ruskin's advocacy for the Arts and Crafts movement, along with his fierce resistance to industrialization and mass production, is contextualized through this work, which serves not only as a celebration of Venice's architectural grandeur but also as a cautionary tale against the loss of artistry in the modern world. Readers seeking a deeper understanding of the intersection between art, architecture, and morality will find 'The Stones of Venice' an indispensable text. It invites reflection on the broader human experience and underscores the significance of preserving beauty in our environments. In a world increasingly dominated by utilitarianism, Ruskin'??s stirring prose and passionate arguments make this work not just relevant but essential for anyone interested in art's power to shape society.
