History of the Venetian Republic【電子書籍】[ W. Carew Hazlitt ]
|

The ancient Italian province of Venetia is of interest to us in the present inquiry as the source to which the first Venetians looked as the home of their fathers or of their own youth. It was a region of Northern Italy, which extended from the foot of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea; but its boundaries seem to have undergone changes. After its subjugation by the Romans, Venetia was considered as forming part of Cisalpine Gaul. The people are described as a commercial, rather than a warlike, community; and it is a curious circumstance that they displayed in their dress, like their insular descendants, a predilection for black. An immense amount of confusion has arisen in the accounts of this country and its inhabitants by a failure to discriminate with proper care between the Veneti of America and their Adriatic namesakes. The former were remarkable for their proficiency in martial pursuits and their brave resistance to the Roman legions and navy; yet it is at the same time questionable whether the trade in amber conducted by Greeks and Phoenicians between Western Europe and the Baltic does not really belong to the Transalpine Veneti, who are also more likely to be the people among whom Herodotus relates that it was a custom to sell their marriageable daughters by auction.

Shipbuilders of the Venetian Arsenal Workers and Workplace in the Preindustrial City【電子書籍】[ Robert C. Davis ]
|

Winner of the American Catholic Historical Association's Howard R. Marraro Prize in Italian History

The master ship builders of seventeenth-century Venice formed part of what was arguably the greatest manufacturing complex in early modern Europe. As many as three thousand masters, apprentices, and laborers regularly worked in the city's enormous shipyards. This is the social history of the men and women who helped maintain not only the city's dominion over the sea but also its stability and peace.

Drawing on a variety of documents that include nearly a thousand petitions from the shipbuilders to the Venetian governments as well as on parish records, inventories, and wills, Robert C. Davis offers a vivid and compelling account of these early modern workers. He explores their mentality and describes their private and public worlds (which in some ways, he argues, prefigured the factories and company towns of a later era). He uncovers the far-reaching social and cultural role played by women in this industrial community. He shows how the Venetian government formed its shipbuilders into a militia to maintain public order. And he describes the often colorful ways in which Venetians dealt with the tensions that role provokedーincluding officially sanctioned community fistfights on the city's bridges.

The recent decision by the Italian government to return the Venetian Arsenal to civilian control has sparked renewed interest in the subject among historians. Shipbuilders of the Venetian Arsenal offers new evidence on the ways in which large, state-run manufacturing operations furthered the industrialization process, as well as on the extent of workers' influence on the social dynamics of the early modern European city.

Arms and the Woman Classical Tradition and Women Writers in the Venetian Renaissance【電子書籍】[ Francesca D'Alessandro Behr ]
|

Arms and the Woman: Classical Tradition and Women Writers in the Venetian Renaissance by Francesca D’Alessandro Behr focuses on the classical reception in the works of female authors active in Venice during the Early Modern Age. Even in this relatively liberal city, women had restricted access to education and were subject to deep-seated cultural prejudices, but those who read and wrote were able, in part, to overcome those limitations.

In this study, Behr explores the work of Moderata Fonte and Lucrezia Marinella and demonstrates how they used knowledge of texts by Virgil, Ovid, and Aristotle to systematically reanalyze the biased patterns apparent both in the romance epic genre and contemporary society. Whereas these classical texts were normally used to bolster the belief in female inferiority and the status quo, Fonte and Marinella used them to envision societies structured according to new, egalitarian ethics. Reflecting on the humanist representation of virtue, Fonte and Marinella insisted on the importance of peace, mercy, and education for women. These authors took up the theme of the equality of genders and participated in the Renaissance querelle des femmes, promoting women’s capabilities and nature.

Venetian Renaissance Fortifications in the Mediterranean【電子書籍】[ Drago? Cosmescu ]
|

The Renaissance was a revolution of ideas, arts and sciences alike, with Italy at its center. Venice was among the first states to embrace new concepts in fortification, which would dominate military architecture for centuries. In the age of large galley fleets and an expanding Ottoman Empire, the mighty defenses of the Republic of Venice protected faraway territories in the Mediterranean, and some of the largest and best preserved Renaissance fortifications are found on the former Venetian islands.

This book illustrates in detail the impressive defenses of Cyprus, Crete and Corfu, their design and their war record. Walled towns and fortresses were constructed to the latest standards of military technology, with walls capable of withstanding the largest armies and the longest sieges, including the longest in history--22 years.

|

This book discusses early-modern collective identities related to territory, language, cultural milieu, state, and alleged "ethnic" origins in the border and multilingual areas of Friuli and the County of Gorizia before the rise of nineteenth - century nationalisms. It analyzes the perception of the Other, especially "barbaric" peoples and the early-modern Slovenian-speaking population, from the viewpoint of patriotisms of various types. These aspects greatly and in various ways influenced the perception of "others," which raises questions of linguistic and alleged "ethnic" otherness. Due to the multilingual environment of the border area studied, these topics display a very complex image. The volume is based on the analysis of an extensive number of early-modern historiographic works.

The Stones of Venice (Vol. 1-3) Study of Venetian Architecture【電子書籍】[ John Ruskin ]
|

In "The Stones of Venice," John Ruskin offers a profound exploration of architecture, art, and the moral underpinnings of society. This multi-volume work deftly combines vivid descriptions, detailed analyses, and historical insights, delving deep into the construction and aesthetics of Venetian architecture as a reflection of cultural values. Ruskin employs an evocative literary style rich in metaphor and symbolism, illuminating how the intricate details of buildings inspire both moral contemplation and societal critique. Its context emerges from the Victorian era's fascination with art and history, against the backdrop of burgeoning industrialization that threatened traditional craftsmanship. John Ruskin, a pivotal figure in the Victorian art movement, was an ardent advocate for craftsmanship and the beauty of nature, deeply influenced by his environmental convictions and a reverence for medieval artistry. His extensive travels in Europe, particularly his admiration for Venice, fueled his belief that architecture is a moral and philosophical reflection of its time. Ruskin's commitment to social reform and his concern for the decline of artisan craftsmanship are evident throughout this work, as he seeks to reconnect art with ethical living. Readers seeking a rich, interdisciplinary examination of architecture and its role in society will find "The Stones of Venice" an indispensable tome. Ruskin'??s eloquence and passionate advocacy for aesthetic and moral values resonate with contemporary issues in art and culture, making this seminal work a critical read for anyone interested in the intersections of art history, philosophy, and social criticism.

|

Venetian Born is a story about friendshipーan unlikely friendship between two very different boys with very similar names; Piero Caesar Alberti, raised on a Lido farm before being moved to a backwater port town to work at an inn, and Giulio Caesar Alberti, born into the second highest class of Venezia and in training at the Ducal Palace to be a Secretary-Ambassador if not Secretary to the Ten like his father. These were real characters, in the flesh, ones who did exist in that exact time, and lived, studied, or worked in those exact places the author, Andy Burtis, describes: He knows, for he has stayed in the same inn at Malamocco that Piero worked in before sailing off to Holland and America in his second and third books of the trilogy of these characters’ Bildungsroman.

His researchers, one a Ph.D in Venetian History from Princeton, the other from Padova who specializes in the Alberti families of Venice, have brought life from the archives like sculptors working on solid stone. On his part, he stayed enough ahead of them to lead their research, mostly with what he found in Alan Hinds voluminous ‘Calendar of State Papers’ related to Venetian Affairs, where he found mention of Giulio’s family situation at the time of Giulio’s father’s imprisonment. Imagine his excitement at hearing from his researchers that they found what he was hoping for from what he had learned about the character of Giulio’s fatherーthat Andrea Alberti was framed by the same witnesses as a famous noble of the time. In fact, Giulio's father was exonerated of treason just after the famous ambassador, the Cavaliere Antonio Foscarini, in 1623. Truth indeed, can not only embellish, but actually trump fiction. And it can be something to look forward to.

Now add to this the charm of Venice itself where all this plays out, which can never be just a background but cries out like the stones, like this novel's children, to be seen and heard, and appreciated: The Grand Canal as negotiated by Giulio’s family gondolier, Romano, The Ducal Palace with all its secret chambers and gilded halls and staircases, salons great as the Consiglio Maggiore Giulio attends and as small as that where Fiamo gives his testimony at the trial of the Doge Mocenigo's son for murdering Cecco's only daughter who was picking berries to take him. Laugh at the farcical attempt of Giulio to take notes of all that was deliberated at the Senate as part of his secretarial training.

Indeed, intrigue veritably oozes out of walls studded with the lion’s heads that hear every word. Imagine the sunrise on the lagoon that Piero would see on his way to work in his Uncle Giobbo's produce boat. Imagine the immense Arsenale from the vantage point of a nine-year-old Piero who has decided to become the ships carpenter and caulker. Picture the Rialto where Giobbo drops off the Lido's produce before going up to the Basilica San Marco's rafters to hear the great Monteverdi conduct his practice sessions and aping those melodies on his violin.

Thumb through the pages to find pictures of the palazzi of Venice like the medieval castle converted into the Fondaco dei Turchi where Giulio does the books for his nefarious uncle to learn the Eastern Trade, and meets the wild-eyed Turkish boy dubbed ‘Ji’ for the Jihadi he always talks about back home in his ‘Islambol.’ And of course, there are always the dungeons where the beloved members of each boy’s family wind up, and where Piero runs messages to and from those waiting so anxiously to hear some news, any news…. Finally, discover the value of Venice to the world, its character so often marginalized to stories of romance and masquerade. Learn what made it not just an oligarchy but a republic strong enough to inspire countries like England, Holland, France, even America with its freedoms, longevity, and industry.

These colonists were called Tyrrhenians or Etruscans; they became the founders, at successive periods, of Spina at the mouth of the Po, and Hadria or Hatria in its vicinity, both of which attained the highest degree of commercial prosperity. No vestiges of the former are now visible, though the name may seem to have survived in the islet of Spinalunga, a later alluvial formation. The gradual deposits of nature have had the effect of removing Hadria to a distance of more than fourteen miles from that sea on which it once stood, and which still bears its nameーthe Hadria iracunda of Horace. Nor has the decline been recent; for even in the time of the Romans these places presented little more than the shadow of their pristine greatness...

Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian Crete【電子書籍】[ Rena N. Lauer ]

|

When Venice conquered Crete in the early thirteenth century, a significant population of Jews lived in the capital and main port city of Candia. This community grew, diversified, and flourished both culturally and economically throughout the period of Venetian rule, and although it adhered to traditional Jewish ways of life, the community also readily engaged with the broader population and the island's Venetian colonial government.

In Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian Crete, Rena N. Lauer tells the story of this unusual and little-known community through the lens of its flexible use of the legal systems at its disposal. Grounding the book in richly detailed studies of individuals and judicial casesーconcerning matters as prosaic as taxation and as dramatic as bigamy and murderーLauer brings the Jews of Candia vibrantly to life. Despite general rabbinic disapproval of such behavior elsewhere in medieval Europe, Crete's Jews regularly turned not only to their own religious courts but also to the secular Venetian judicial system. There they aired disputes between family members, business partners, spouses, and even the leaders of their community. And with their use of secular justice as both symptom and cause, Lauer contends, Crete's Jews grew more open and flexible, confident in their identity and experiencing little of the anti-Judaism increasingly suffered by their coreligionists in Western Europe.

Enduring friendships and long-held vendettas come alive against the splendor and decadence of eighteenth-century Venice.

In 1775 Venice--known to outsiders as “the brothel of Europe”--the tradition of mask-wearing has allowed adultery and debauchery to flourish. But Marietta and Elena, two friends at the Ospedale della Piet?, a world-famous orphanage and music school for girls, know little of that milieu--until they come of age.

Elena is forced to wed the head of the Celano clan, a jealous, brutal man, while Marietta marries Domenico Torrisi, whose family vendetta with the Celanos is centuries old. Tradition dictates that the friends should never speak again, but their bond is too strong to break.

As the French Revolution unsettles all of Europe, Elena’s husband frames Domenico and he becomes a political prisoner. Marietta and Elena plot to save him, and the women discover that Venetian masks have noble purposes, too--but will their efforts put their own lives at risk?

Embodying the glitter and the treachery of the city it portrays, The Venetian Mask will keep you turning pages long into the night.

|

The people are described as a commercial, rather than a warlike, community; and it is a curious circumstance that they displayed in their dress, like their insular descendants, a predilection for black...

The Stones of Venice A Study of Venetian Architecture【電子書籍】[ John Ruskin ]
|

In 'The Stones of Venice,' John Ruskin intricately examines the architecture, art, and societal values of Venice, employing a rich and evocative literary style that fuses detailed descriptions with philosophical musings. Published in three volumes between 1851 and 1853, this seminal work not only dissects the Gothic architectural elements of the city but also explores the broader implications of craftsmanship and moral values within the constructs of society. Ruskin's passionate prose reflects the Romantic sentiment of the era, highlighting a growing inclination towards appreciating beauty and opposing industrialization's detrimental effects on artistry. John Ruskin (1819-1900), an influential art critic and social thinker, was profoundly shaped by his upbringing and education, which immersed him in the study of nature, art, and the writings of the Romantic poets. His experiences travelling through Europe, particularly in Venice, cultivated his appreciation for Gothic architecture, which he viewed as a symbol of moral integrity and craftsmanship, in stark contrast to the mechanization and mass production of his time. Ruskin's cultural critiques extended beyond architecture, advocating for the dignity of labor and the importance of social responsibility. 'The Stones of Venice' is a must-read for anyone interested in architectural history, art criticism, and social philosophy. Its lyrical examinations of beauty stand as a timeless reminder of the intrinsic relationship between art, society, and ethics. Readers will find themselves captivated by Ruskin's eloquent reflections that summon a deeper appreciation of not only Venice but also the role of art in illuminating the human experience.
