The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance (Italian Painters #1)【電子書籍】[ Bernard Berenson ]

The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance by Bernard Berenson (1865-1959) is the first essay in a four-volume series on Italian painters of the Renaissance and after. This set has become a classic reference work. It is often referred to as the “four gospels”. These books have established the international reputation of their author. Unlike the prevailing conceptions at the time, Berenson establishes a dialogue between the works of art and the viewer. This famous work first appeared in the English language in 1895. Critics were unanimously favourable.

It is a monumental work. These texts open the world to their readers. Louis Gillet of the ‘Acad?mie fran?aise’ (French Academy) wrote to the author in 1908: “It is perhaps the greatest service you have rendered to the history of art, to have defined better than any another critic the personality of the different schools, for having distinguished, alongside the Florentine school, the special physiognomy of the Umbrian schools, and alongside Venice, the face of the Northern school; to have characterized the different geniuses, to have more precisely than any other delineated the map." Louis Gillet then translated the work into French.

In this first volume dedicated to Venice, the reader discovers or rediscovers the painters of the Quattrocento and of the following centuries. The author gives them unity. For undoubtedly the first time in the history of art, he gives us a synthetic and global vision of these painters in their world and their time.

This adaptation of Carlo Goldoni's 18th-century comedy The Venetian Twins quickly earned a reputation as one of the most boisterous, vibrant and irreverent works of Australian musical theatre following its initial season at the Sydney Opera House for the Nimrod Theatre Company in 1979.
Antonio Gardano's publications are among the most important sources of 16th-century music. The second volume describes the output of this leading Italian music press in its cultural, bibliographical, and musical context. The first part of the book consists of an overview of Gardano's repertory from the fifties and the cultural and musical milieu in which he worked. It includes discussions of the continuing popularity of his earlier repertory, the music of the younger generation introduced in the fifties, the music of the composers around San Marco, and genres such as the multi-movement madrigal, the canzoni villanesche, instrumental works, and new anthologies. Also discussed are the dating of some undated editions, unconfirmed and doubtful prints, and ordering within the editions. A chapter on binder's copies describes groups of editions bound together by their early owners and serves as a valuable index to the tastes of the collectors. The catalog section covers all Gardano's known publications of the fifties, and provides full titles, bibliographical information, contents with concordant sources for each piece, and locations of individual copies with notes on their bindings, owners' marks, annotations, and other significant characteristics.
In 1203, the relative peace of the Byzantine Empire is imperiled when the ships of the Fourth Crusade show up outside the walls of Constantinople. Instead of traveling to the Holy Land to battle the infidels, the Crusade, having sailed out of Venice, has been subverted and is now besieging the city. The jester known as Feste, his wife Viola, and their compatriots within the city are faced with catastrophe as the peace the Fool's Guild has worked so hard to maintain is about to be shattered.

With such a disaster looming, the death of one silk merchant in the Venetian Quarter of Constantinople seems insignificant. But Philoxenites, the Imperial Treasurer and one of the most power schemers at court, has taken a special interest in the case and wants Feste to investigate Venetian merchant's death. The Bravo A Venetian Story【電子書籍】[ James Fenimore Cooper ]

A novel of early eighteenth-century Venice that Cooper called "in spirit, the most American book I ever wrote."

The Bravo (1831) takes place in early eighteenth-century Venice, when the "Serene Republic" had lost much of its glory, leaving its oligarchs struggling to hold on to their family wealth by manipulating the government and people through secret councils and a figure-head doge. In 1844, Cooper called it "in spirit, the most American book I ever wrote" because of its depiction of the masses duped by demagoguery and the attempts of Congress to rein in President Jackson, who Cooper saw as representing the popular will. In the novel, the low-born hero, Jacopo Frontoni, is forced to become an agent of the state because his unjustly imprisoned father languishes in the infamous state prison. On the last page, Jacopo is executed as a scapegoat for the crimes attributed to him of which he is innocent, rendering his beloved insane. Only in a subplot does a noble couple escape Venice to enjoy marriage.

The present text is based on all extant manuscript witnesses (including a lengthy deleted section) and offers extensive explanatory notes.

Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian Crete【電子書籍】[ Rena N. Lauer ]

When Venice conquered Crete in the early thirteenth century, a significant population of Jews lived in the capital and main port city of Candia. This community grew, diversified, and flourished both culturally and economically throughout the period of Venetian rule, and although it adhered to traditional Jewish ways of life, the community also readily engaged with the broader population and the island's Venetian colonial government.

In Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian Crete, Rena N. Lauer tells the story of this unusual and little-known community through the lens of its flexible use of the legal systems at its disposal. Grounding the book in richly detailed studies of individuals and judicial casesーconcerning matters as prosaic as taxation and as dramatic as bigamy and murderーLauer brings the Jews of Candia vibrantly to life. Despite general rabbinic disapproval of such behavior elsewhere in medieval Europe, Crete's Jews regularly turned not only to their own religious courts but also to the secular Venetian judicial system. There they aired disputes between family members, business partners, spouses, and even the leaders of their community. And with their use of secular justice as both symptom and cause, Lauer contends, Crete's Jews grew more open and flexible, confident in their identity and experiencing little of the anti-Judaism increasingly suffered by their coreligionists in Western Europe.

The City of Masks Unveiling the Secrets of Venetian Disguises【電子書籍】[ George Barr McCutcheon ]

In "The City of Masks," George Barr McCutcheon explores the intricate interplay of identity and societal roles within the vibrant but deceptive setting of a fictional city where masks'??literal and metaphorical'??are the norm. With a deft hand, McCutcheon blends elements of romance, satire, and social commentary, adopting a narrative style that juxtaposes wit with poignant observations of human behavior. The novel emerges from the early 20th-century literary context when the exploration of identity was burgeoning, reflecting contemporary societal anxieties around authenticity and the facades people wear in their daily lives. George Barr McCutcheon, an American writer hailing from Lafayette, Indiana, was known for his engaging storytelling and keen insight into human nature. His background in journalism and playwriting, coupled with a fascination for urban life, significantly influenced his depiction of cities as complex characters in their own right. McCutcheon'??s own experiences navigating social interactions in the rapidly changing landscape of American society provided a fertile ground for the themes explored in this novel. "The City of Masks" is a compelling read for those who enjoy richly layered narratives that provoke thought on self-identity and societal expectations. McCutcheon'??s masterful navigation through humor and pathos invites readers to reflect on their own masks, making this work a timeless piece worth revisiting.
