Encountering Morocco introduces readers to life in this North African country through vivid accounts of fieldwork as personal experience and intellectual journey. We meet the contributors at diverse stages of their careers?from the unmarried researcher arriving for her first stint in the field to the seasoned fieldworker returning with spouse and children. They offer frank descriptions of what it means to take up residence in a place where one is regarded as an outsider, learn the language and local customs, and struggle to develop rapport. Moving reflections on friendship, kinship, and belief within the cross-cultural encounter reveal why study of Moroccan society has played such a seminal role in the development of cultural anthropology.

Adventures in Morocco and Journeys Through the Oases of Draa and Tafilet【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs ]

"The first European to cross the Sahara from the north to south." Allaby, Exploration (2010)

"Most interesting."-Pictorial World

"As an explorer, Rohlfs stands next to Barth and Livingstone." -Athenaeum

"A traveller and explorer whose adventures remind us of Barth and Bruce."-Hour.

"We have not read a book with so much pleasure for some time."-Literary World

"We recommend his volume to all lovers of adventurous travel."-Examiner

Disguised as an Arab, Gerhard Rohlfs was the first European to cross Africa from Tripoli across the Sahara desert from north to south. He travelled via Lake Chad and along the Niger River and to present-day Lagos on the Gulf of Guinea from 1865-1867. He was the second European explorer to visit the region of the Draa River in the south of Morocco. For this work, in 1868 he was awarded the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society of London.

Rohlfs's detailed account of his time in Morocco and the Sahara is contained in his 1874 book "Adventures in Morocco and Journeys Through the Oases of Draa and Tafilet." (Rohlf's English book does not list a specific translator; in 1874 in the magazine Athenaeum, Rohlfs in specifying the translator merely states that "at my wish, Messrs. Low caused an English translation to be made.")

Rohlfs' accounts of his experience in Morocco reads more like an adventure novel than history. Several times he was attacked by robbers and left for dead; and once, covered with nine wounds, he lay for two days and three nights in the desert: there he found good Samaritans in the inhabitants of a neighboring oasis, who kindly cared for him, and enabled him to resume his travels.

He had scarcely entered on his first journey in this inhospitable country when he was robbed of every thing that he possessed; but, declining to turn back, he had the courage to press on to the first grand sheriff and apply for the position of surgeon in the army. Thus he obtained, and was soon promoted to the post of body-physician to the Governor, and thus obtained access to the royal city of Fez, the residence of the Emperor.

According to Rohlfs very few of the Berbers understood the Koran, the prayers, or the religious precepts, which are all in the Arabic tongue; yet, nevertheless, they were the most radical Moslems, and threatened him several times, whom they suspected of being a "Christian dog."

Rohlf's life was always saved by the intervention of the Governor's son, who was a distant descendant of the Mohamed; whose influence was all-powerful.

Having made well nigh the circuit of Morocco, skirting the Atlantic seaboard from Tangiers southwards, besides long intervals of sojourn in the Sahara, and penetrating to the Oases of Draa and Tafi.

Global and Local in Algeria and Morocco The World, The State and the Village【

This book brings together contributors across the disciplines to examine the local, national, regional and global processes that have shaped Maghribi societies, economies and politics since the colonial period.

Focusing equally on the local shape of global processes and on the broader significance of particular ‘ways of doing things’, these studies move beyond generalisations about globalisation and its impact on local societies, whether developmental or detrimental, of the ‘global in the local’, or of ‘glocalisation’. Cases range from the onset of the ‘first wave’ of globalisation in the colonial era to the most recent developments in identity politics, consumerism, and telecommunications. Contributors show how nationalising and globalising influences are seized, remade, and put to work in very different ways by High Atlas farmers or urban real estate speculators, human rights activists at the edge of the Sahara and amateur theatre actors in Mediterranean towns. Always located somewhere, these social actors nonetheless act in different ways, with different effects, at different levels of engagement, whether with each other, their own governments, or the wider world.

This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of North African Studies.

Morocco In the Labyrinth of Dreams and Bazaars【電子書籍】[ Walter M Weiss ]

While much of the Middle East is now engulfed in conflict and repression, Morocco remains a curious anomaly: peaceful and open to the West, it has provided refuge for artists and writers for generations, and it remains an exotic destination for many curious travelers. The country has been influenced by an incredible variety of peoplesーPhoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Berbers, Muslims, Jews, and most of Europe’s colonizers have played a roleーand modern Moroccan society is no less rich and varied.

In Morocco, Walter M. Weiss brings extensive knowledge of the region to bear as he travels the breadth and depth of the country’s social and geographical contrasts. Berber villagers of the mountains are for the most part still illiterate and consider their king to be divinely chosen, while businessmen in Casablanca’s towering offices dream of closer ties to the European Union. Weiss visits the settings of modern legends, such as Tangier, as well as the two medieval centres F?s and Mekn?s, and sees earthen kasbahs and Marrakech’s bazaar. On the way, he meets acrobats, Sufi musicians, pilgrims, craftsmen, beatniks, rabbis, and Berber farmersーa kaleidoscope of variety and cultural influence.

Literacy, Information, and Development in Morocco during the 1990s【電子書籍】[ Samia Touati ]

Literacy, Information, and Development in Morocco during the 1990s offers readers a two-level investigation of the culture of literacy. A handful of researchers approach literacy either through theory or through practice in general; however, this is the first study in the African context that tries to investigate the issue of literacy from both perspectives.

At the first level, Touati provides an evaluation of the state policy towards literacy during the 1990s. She places a particular emphasis on the motives and assumptions behind policy-makers' increasing interest in literacy. Since 1990, the state has adopted a participatory approach which is based on a cross-sector strategy that encourages both public and private institutions to take part in the dissemination of literacy. This text explores the working factors that motivate Moroccan decision-makers to support the campaign for greater literacy. Such factors are founded on the assumption that providing literacy programs, training, and education are a means of furthering the country's development. Morrocan officials also base their support for higher literacy rates on the belief that literacy is useful for both the individual and the society.

At the second level, Touati offers an examination of the presumed benefits of literacy in Morocco. Literacy has been found to engender many personal, social, and economic benefits, but only when certain conditions are met. These conditions include the political will to disseminate literacy, the acknowledgement of the need for literacy in one's everyday life, the availability of job opportunities, and the eradication of poverty.

Jews and Muslims in Morocco Their Intersecting Worlds【電子書籍】[ Joseph Chetrit ]

Multiple traditions of Jewish origins in Morocco emphasize the distinctiveness of Moroccan Jewry as indigenous to the area, rooted in its earliest settlements and possessing deep connections and associations with the historic peoples of the region. The creative interaction of Moroccan Jewry with the Arab and Berber cultures was noted in the Jews’ use of Morocco’s multiple languages and dialects, characteristic poetry, and musical works as well as their shared magical rites and popular texts and proverbs. In Jews and Muslims in Morocco: Their Intersecting Worlds historians, anthropologists, musicologists, Rabbinic scholars, Arabists, and linguists analyze this culture, in all its complexity and hybridity. The volume’s collection of essays span political and social interactions throughout history, cultural commonalities, traditions, and halakhic developments. As Jewish life in Morocco has dwindled, much of what is left are traditions maintained in Moroccan ex-pat communities, and memories of those who stayed and those who left. The volume concludes with shared memories from the perspective of a Jewish intellectual from Morocco, a Moroccan Muslim scholar, an analysis of a visual memoir painted by the nineteenth-century artist, Eug?ne Delacroix, and a photo essay of the vanished world of Jewish life in Morocco.

The Politics of Immigration Beyond Liberal States Morocco and Tunisia in Comparative Perspective【電子書籍】[ Katharina Natter ]

Immigration presents a fundamental challenge to the nation-state and is a key political priority for governments worldwide. However, knowledge of the politics of immigration remains largely limited to liberal states of the Global North. In this book, Katharina Natter draws on extensive fieldwork and archival research to compare immigration policymaking in authoritarian Morocco and democratizing Tunisia. Through this analysis, Natter advances theory-building on immigration beyond the liberal state and demonstrates how immigration politics ? or how a state deals with 'the other' ? can provide valuable insights into the inner workings of political regimes. Connecting scholarship from comparative politics, international relations and sociology across the Global North and Global South, Natter's highly original study challenges long-held assumptions and reveals the fascinating interplay between immigration, political regimes, and modern statehood around the world.

Economic Liberalization and Authoritarianism A Comparative Political Economy of Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco, 1950-2011【電子書籍】[ Christian Neugebauer ]

Contrary to other world regions, political regimes in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remain largely authoritarian. While the search for explanations is still ongoing, Christian Neugebauer draws attention to a hitherto underresearched factor: economic liberalization. Being part of a global shift from state-led development towards structural adjustment in the economy, these policies also deeply affected the countries of the MENA region. This makes the resilience of authoritarianism in the region all the more puzzling, as a large part of the scientific community expected economic liberalization to undermine authoritarian regimes. Neugebauer strives to solve the puzzle with a comparative case study that covers four countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco) and their political regimes, from independence in the 1950s to the Arab Spring in 2011. He shows that two specific policies of economic liberalization might in fact have been relevant for regime stability: consumer-price liberalization and privatization.

Globalized Authoritarianism Megaprojects, Slums, and Class Relations in Urban Morocco【電子書籍】[ Koenraad Bogaert ]

A rich investigation into Morocco’s urban politics

Over the past thirty years, Morocco’s cities have transformed dramatically. To take just one example, Casablanca’s medina is now obscured behind skyscrapers that are funded by global capital and encouraged by Morocco’s monarchy, which hopes to transform this city into a regional leader of finance and commerce. Such changes have occurred throughout Morocco. Megaprojects are redesigning the cityscapes of Rabat, Tangiers, and Casablanca, turning the nation’s urban centers into laboratories of capital accumulation, political dominance, and social control.

In Globalized Authoritarianism, Koenraad Bogaert links more abstract questions of government, globalization, and neoliberalism with concrete changes in the city. Bogaert goes deep beneath the surface of Morocco’s urban prosperity to reveal how neoliberal government and the increased connectivity engendered by global capitalism transformed Morocco’s leading urban spaces, opening up new sites for capital accumulation, creating enormous class divisions, and enabling new innovations in state authoritarianism. Analyzing these transformations, he argues that economic globalization does not necessarily lead to increased democratization but to authoritarianism with a different face, to a form of authoritarian government that becomes more and more a globalized affair.

Showing how Morocco’s experiences have helped produce new forms of globalization, Bogaert offers a bridge between in-depth issues of Middle Eastern studies and broader questions of power, class, and capital as they continue to evolve in the twenty-first century.

Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco Strategies of Centralization and Decentralization【電子書籍】[ Janine A. Clark ]

In recent years, authoritarian states in the Middle East and North Africa have faced increasing international pressure to decentralize political power. Decentralization is presented as a panacea that will foster good governance and civil society, helping citizens procure basic services and fight corruption. Two of these states, Jordan and Morocco, are monarchies with elected parliaments and recent experiences of liberalization. Morocco began devolving certain responsibilities to municipal councils decades ago, while Jordan has consistently followed a path of greater centralization. Their experiences test such assumptions about the benefits of localism.

Janine A. Clark examines why Morocco decentralized while Jordan did not and evaluates the impact of their divergent paths, ultimately explaining how authoritarian regimes can use decentralization reforms to consolidate power. Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco argues that decentralization is a tactic authoritarian regimes employ based on their coalition strategies to expand their base of support and strengthen patron-client ties. Clark analyzes the opportunities that decentralization presents to local actors to pursue their interests and lays out how municipal-level figures find ways to use reforms to their advantage. In Morocco, decentralization has resulted not in greater political inclusivity or improved services, but rather in the entrenchment of pro-regime elites in power. The main Islamist political party has also taken advantage of these reforms. In Jordan, decentralization would undermine the networks that benefit elites and their supporters. Based on extensive fieldwork, Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco is an important contribution to Middle East studies and political science that challenges our understanding of authoritarian regimes’ survival strategies and resilience.

Immigration Nation Aid, Control, and Border Politics in Morocco【電子書籍】[ Lorena Gazzotti ]

Over the past forty years, countries in the Global North have increasingly restricted their migration policies to reduce the arrival of migrants. As part of this, development aid has become a central tool in the migration control strategy pursued by European countries and the US, with donors, International Organisations and NGOs becoming prominent actors. In this book, Lorena Gazzotti shows that migration control is not only exercised through fences and deportation. Building on extensive research in Morocco, Gazzotti shows that aid marks the rise of a substantially different mode of migration containment, one where power works beyond fast violence, and its disciplinary potential is augmented precisely by its elusiveness. Where existing studies on border externalisation have essentialised donors, International Organisations and NGOs, with countries of 'origin' and 'transit' as compliant subcontractors, and border control as a neat form of intervention, this nuanced study unsettles such assumptions, to show that bordering happens in everyday, mundane fashions, far away from the spectacle of border violence. The European Union’s Immigration Policy Managing Migration in Turkey and Morocco【電子書籍】[ Ayselin G?zde Y?ld?z ]

This book analyzes the externalization of the EU’s immigration and asylum practices towards non-member transit countries and the consequences of this process. Selected policy areas of externalization (border management, visa policy, readmission agreements and asylum policy) are applied to Turkey and Morocco as two main migration transit countries within two different institutional cooperation mechanisms: Turkey as an EU candidate country within the EU’s enlargement policy; Morocco without membership prospect within the EU’s neighborhood policy. Y?ld?z applies theoretical debates and critically compares the rhetoric in policy papers with practice in the field. This volume not only contributes to the issue of the external dimension of EU immigration policy by incorporating transit countries into the debate, but also expands upon our understanding of the EU’s contested external governance paradigm. It will be of use to students, scholars, and policy makers in the field of European studies, migration and asylum studies, international relations, and political science.
