Fielding's literary style combines wit, irony, and humor as he critiques societal norms and the conventions of the sentimental novel. The text extends beyond mere parody; it serves as a commentary on class, gender, and the complexities of virtue in an increasingly commercialized society. By employing the epistolary format, Fielding adeptly contrasts Shamela's self-serving motivations with the perceived virtues of Pamela, challenging the reader to reconsider conventional morality and the nature of authentic virtue. Australians All A History of Growing Up from the Ice Age to the Apology【電子書籍】[ Nadia Wheatley ]

'I love history because it is story, but the very best thing about this story is that it is not finished. All of us are making history every moment of our lives.' Nadia Wheatley

Australians All encompasses the history of our continent from the Ice Age to the Apology, from the arrival of the First Fleet to the Mabo Judgement. Brief accounts of the lives of real young Australians open up this chronological narrative. Some of the subjects of the eighty mini-biographies have become nationally or even internationally famous. Others were legends in their own families and communities. Meticulously researched, beautifully written and highly readable, Australians All helps us understand who we are, and how we belong to the land we all share. It also shows us who we might be.

'In Australian histories there is a particular group whose tales and presence and concerns are rarely narrated. These are the children and adolescents. They are depicted as mute sufferers of the decisions of elders (as were the children of the Depression), helpless victims of policy (the Stolen Generations) and the children of the Second World War (of whom I was one). They appear in most writing of history as mere passive accessories to what adults do. But their stories are our stories too, and their stories are our history, and Nadia Wheatley, that great writer, tells that wide-ranging story in a way so imaginative and colourful that it would attract any young person, and make young readers feel that many of their personal struggles have been faced before, by children of the past and present. Nadia has performed an essential service to history and the young.' - Thomas Keneally

In four superb dialogues, Plato provides the classic account. Euthyphro finds Socrates outside the court-house, debating the nature of piety, while the Apology is his robust rebuttal of the charges of impiety and a defence of the philosopher's life. In the Crito, while awaiting execution in prison, Socrates counters the arguments of friends urging him to escape. Finally, in the Phaedo, he is shown calmly confident in the face of death, skilfully arguing the case for the immortality of the soul. Just Stop It!!! What's The True Meaning Behind Your "Apology?"【電子書籍】[ Erica M. Glenn ]

We tend to live in a world where everyone reframes from apologizing for their wrongs, but a world where people apologize for being who God has destined one to be. 1. Is it based on one's insecurities? 2. Is it because one suffers from "people pleasing?" Or 3. Is it because one has been threatened to the point that standing up for what is right no longer appears to be an option? No matter the response, the Lord has NOT placed anyone here on earth to feel "intimidated," nor "ashamed," about who God has destined one to be.

The Count's Apology【電子書籍】[ Robert Barr ]

This early work by Robert Barr was originally published in 1896 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "The Count's Apology" is a short story following the Count of Winneburg, a bluff and generous-hearted giant, who would stand by his friends against all comers. Robert Barr was born on 16th September 1849 in Glasgow, Scotland, but he and his parents emigrated to Upper Canada when he was just four years old. He attended Toronto Normal School to train as a teacher and this career path led him to become headmaster of the Central School of Windsor, Ontario. During his time as a headteacher he began to contribute short stories to the Detroit Free Press, a publication for whom he left the teaching profession to become a staff member in 1876. He wrote for them under the pseudonym "Luke Sharp", a name he found amusing on a sign reading "Luke Sharpe, Undertaker" that he used to pass on his daily commute to work. He eventually rose to the position of news editor at the publication. In 1881 he left Canada for London to establish a weekly English edition of the Detroit Free Press. During the 1890's he began to increase his literary production, writing mainly in the popular crime genre of the day. The success of his contemporary, Arthur Conan Doyle, and his super sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, inspired him to write the first Holmes parody "The Adventures of Sherlaw Kombs". Despite this jibe Barr and Doyle remained on very good terms. Robert Barr died from heart disease on October 21, 1912, at his home in Woldingham, a small village to the south-east of London.

The Apology【電子書籍】[ Plato ]

The Apology, by Plato, is the Socratic dialogue that presents the speech of legal self-defence, which Socrates presented at his trial for impiety and corruption, in 399 BC. Specifically, the Apology of Socrates is a defence against the charges of "corrupting the young" and "not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel" to Athens. Among the primary sources about the trial and death of the philosopher Socrates (469?399 BC), the Apology of Socrates is the dialogue that depicts the trial, and is one of four Socratic dialogues, along with Euthyphro, Phaedo, and Crito, through which Plato details the final days of the philosopher Socrates.
