Lying off the coast of Monterey, Bird Island is favored with tranquil beaches, coves and rocky hills. The island is home to a finishing school for girls, and a picturesque old hotel-in desperate need of repair. The hotel owner must sell plots of the island to finance renovation and enlargement.
The buyers are an odd bunch: a whale hunter, an amateur photographer of artistic nudes, a fugitive from justice, a young poet who composes rhymes for greeting cards, and an explorer, accompanied by his pet baboon.
Everything goes wrong, to the extent that even Rexie, the cheese-loving hotel cat is affected! So much for tranquility, on Bird Island...
First published as Isle of Peril, Bird Isle mixes intrigue with humor, inspired by the great P.G. Korea & Her Neighbours【電子書籍】[ Isabella Bird ]

In Korea and Her Neighbours, written in two volumes between 1894 and 1897, Isabella Bird documents one of the most critical and interesting periods of Korean history. Violently torn from centuries of seclusion, this fragile nation awoke to find itself confronted on all sides by an array of powerful, ambitious, and aggressive countries clamoring for commercial and political concessions - a rivalry which, at this time, made Korea the battlefield of the first Sino-Japanese war. In the midst of political turmoil and international intrigue, the author offers an extraordinarily accurate description of almost every facet of the country covering such topics as the climate, geography, the living conditions of the people, the structure of government, indigenous religions, customs, and foreign trade treaties. Included is a chilling description of the assassination of Korea's queen, and an account of Isabella Bird's undaunted travels in Manchuria, China, and Russia, where she reported on the military tension at the Korean borders.

This short story is to help people who suffer from insomnia. It is based on scientific research that focuses on the effects of colored light on the human body.
My idea for the story first emerged when I was taking a psychology elective at Columbia University. I was studying full time at Pratt Institute where I tried to connect the theory of emotions with different properties of colors that we studied. In other words, I was trying to piece together different ideas that fit together, but not with the purpose of making any scientific claims of my own. Although my fantastical story is inspired by scientific theories I did not write it with the intention of connecting different scientific theories, because the two theories are each independent and not connected together in any way, the first dealing with emotions and the latter dealing with effects of colored light on melatonin.
The plot of the short story is fantastical but it can be interpreted in a realistic way. When a little girl can't sleep, her brother suffers from it. Together the siblings discover mysterious phenomena; metaphors for real-world problems.

Unbeaten Tracks in Japan Journeying through 19th Century Japan: Exploring Uncharted Landscapes and Cultures【電子書籍】[ Isabella L. Bird ]

In "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan," Isabella L. Bird presents a vivid and captivating narrative that chronicles her adventurous journeys through the less-traveled paths of Japan during the late 19th century. Written in an engaging style that combines detailed observation with personal reflection, Bird's work is a testament to her keen eye for both the natural landscapes and the intricate cultural tapestries she encounters. The book emerges from the literary context of travel writing and cross-cultural encounters, demonstrating how the genre can simultaneously entertain and inform while challenging the Victorian-era perceptions of the East. Isabella L. Bird was an intrepid traveler and a pioneering female explorer, whose experiences were shaped by her unconventional background and adventurous spirit. Born in 1831 in Yorkshire, England, she defied societal norms by traversing remote territories, often as one of the few women among her contemporaries. Her travels were not only a means of escape from the constraints of Victorian society but also a way to explore her fascination with other cultures, which deeply influenced her descriptive and empathetic writing style. "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan" is a remarkable exploration that deserves a place on the shelf of every travel literature enthusiast. Bird's personal anecdotes and acute observations will resonate with readers seeking an authentic account of Japan'??s rural charm and cultural richness. As a historical document, it not only invites readers to immerse themselves in a bygone era but also inspires a deeper appreciation for the complexities of cultural exchanges.
