The Inner Bird Anatomy and Evolution【電子書籍】[ Gary W. Kaiser ]

Birds are among the most successful vertebrates on Earth. An important part of our natural environment and deeply embedded in our culture, birds are studied by more professional ornithologists and enjoyed by more amateur enthusiasts than ever before. However, both amateurs and professionals typically focus on birds’ behaviour and appearance and only superficially understand the characteristics that make birds so unique.

The Inner Bird introduces readers to the avian skeleton, then moves beyond anatomy to discuss the relationships between birds and dinosaurs and other early ancestors. Gary Kaiser examines the challenges scientists face in understanding avian evolution - even recent advances in biomolecular genetics have failed to provide a clear evolutionary story. Using examples from recently discovered fossils of birds and near-birds, Kaiser describes an avian history based on the gradual abandonment of dinosaur-like characteristics, and the related acquisition of avian characteristics such as sophisticated flight techniques and the production of large eggs. Such developments have enabled modern birds to invade the oceans and to exploit habitats that excluded dinosaurs for millions of years.

While ornithology is a complex discipline that draws on many fields, it is nevertheless burdened with obsolete assumptions and archaic terminology. The Inner Bird offers modern interpretations for some of those ideas and links them to more current research. It should help anyone interested in birds to bridge the gap between long-dead fossils and the challenges faced by living species.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings【電子書籍】[ Maya Angelou ]

Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her ageーand has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”ーJames Baldwin

I got up and essentially wrote down the outline for it right then and there. The inspiration came from an 85-year old neighbor I had when I lived in Nagano Prefecture who was also a writer and plant lover.

This short story is to help people who suffer from insomnia. It is based on scientific research that focuses on the effects of colored light on the human body.
My idea for the story first emerged when I was taking a psychology elective at Columbia University. I was studying full time at Pratt Institute where I tried to connect the theory of emotions with different properties of colors that we studied. In other words, I was trying to piece together different ideas that fit together, but not with the purpose of making any scientific claims of my own. Although my fantastical story is inspired by scientific theories I did not write it with the intention of connecting different scientific theories, because the two theories are each independent and not connected together in any way, the first dealing with emotions and the latter dealing with effects of colored light on melatonin.
The plot of the short story is fantastical but it can be interpreted in a realistic way. When a little girl can't sleep, her brother suffers from it. Together the siblings discover mysterious phenomena; metaphors for real-world problems.

The Bird【電子書籍】[ Jules Michelet ]

In "The Bird," Jules Michelet embarks on a lyrical exploration of avian life that transcends mere natural observation, immersing readers in the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. Written in the mid-19th century, the book reflects the Romantic literary style, characterized by vivid imagery and an emotional connection to the subject matter. Michelet employs an almost poetic prose, weaving together scientific observations with philosophical musings, ultimately revealing his reverence for birds as symbols of freedom and inspiration amidst the industrial age's encroachments on nature. The work stands as a testament to the burgeoning interest in biology and environment during the Enlightenment period, positioning birds as integral elements of the ecosystem worthy of admiration and protection. Jules Michelet (1798-1874), a prominent French historian and naturalist, is often noted for his passionate engagement with the natural world and its historical context. His background in history, combined with his fascination for nature, led him to reconcile the scientific and the spiritual in his writing. This duality is evident in "The Bird," where his admiration for the natural world is steeped in a historical narrative that reveals both human and avian evolution, reflecting the interconnectedness of all living things. For readers seeking a unique blend of nature writing and historical insight, "The Bird" offers a captivating journey into the world of birds, encouraging a deeper appreciation of their role in our lives and the environment. Michelet's evocative prose invites both ornithologists and casual readers alike to reflect on the beauty of nature and the urgency of its preservation.
This carefully crafted ebook: "Days to Remember: The British Empire in the Great War (Illustrated)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "It is never easy to fix upon one cause as the origin of a great war, and the war of 1914 was the outcome of several causes combined. For twenty years there had been growing up in Europe a sense of insecurity; the great Powers had become restless and suspicious of one another . . ." (Excerpt) The British Army during World War I fought the largest and most costly war in its long history. Unlike the French and German Armies, its units were made up exclusively of volunteersーas opposed to conscriptsーat the beginning of the conflict. Furthermore, the British Army was considerably smaller than its French and German counterparts. Yet the army showed exemplary valour and courage on the battlefield. Buchan and Newbolt bring their expert analysis into their overview of the Great War and the reasons for it. John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. With the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan worked as a correspondent in France for The Times. Sir Henry John Newbolt (1862?1938) was an English poet, novelist and historian. He also had a very powerful role as a government adviser. He is perhaps best remembered for his poems "Vita? Lampada" and "Drake's Drum".

As one of the first female travelers to document her experiences extensively, her works often reflect her pioneering attitude and the societal constraints of her time. Bird's travels to Japan in 1878 can be attributed to her desire to escape the confines of Victorian domesticity and embrace a life filled with adventure and exploration, which deeply informs the authenticity and depth of her narratives. "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan" is a captivating read for anyone interested in travel literature, Japanese culture, or the experiences of women in the 19th century. Bird's unique perspective and eloquent prose invite readers to traverse the paths less traveled, offering an illuminating glimpse into a world that is simultaneously familiar and alien.

A "sweet, touching" memoir about animals, loss, and finding a home in the world by the author of Shizuko's Daughter and Yarn ( Kirkus Reviews).

Cat and Bird, a "memoir in animals," is anchored around Kyoko Mori's relationship with the six house cats who defined the major eras of her life as a writer: Dorian, Oscar, Ernest, Algernon, Miles, and Jackson. As she details the rhythms and routines of their days together, she weaves a narrative tapestry out of her past: the deep family tragedy and resilience that marked her childhood in Japan, her move to the American Midwest as a young adult, her experiences as a bird rehabilitator and cat trainer, her marriage and divorce, and the joys and profound heartbreaks that come with pet ownership. Full of razor-sharp observations and generous prose, Cat and Bird whirls into a moving meditation about grief, writing, the imagination, the solitary life, and the wonders of companionship with creatures both domestic and wild.

Unbeaten Tracks in Japan【電子書籍】[ Isabella L. Bird ]

"Unbeaten Tracks in Japan" is compiled of the letters she sent to her sister during her 7 months sojourn in Japan in 1878. Her travels there took her from Edo (now called Tokyo) through the interior - where she was often the first foreigner the locals had met - to Niigata, and from there to Aomori. There she crossed over to Yezo (Hokkaido), and her account on the life of the Ainu, an indigenous people of Japan, provides an interesting glimpse of days long past.

This classic travel book details Isabella Bird's 1878 trip, where she set out alone to explore the interior of Japan - a rarity not only because of Bird's sex but because the country was virtually unknown to Westerners. The Japan she describes is not the sentimental world of Madame Butterfly but a vibrant land of real people with a complex culture and hardscrabble lives.
