America the Beautiful and Violent Black Youth and Neighborhood Trauma in Chicago【電子書籍】[ Dexter Voisin ]

Widespread media narratives portray an epidemic of neighborhood violence in urban areasーoften ignoring the structural explanations advanced by community organizers fighting violence and activists such as those in the Movement for Black Lives. In this book, Dexter R. Voisin provides a compelling and social-justice-oriented analysis of current trends in neighborhood violence in light of the historical and structural factors that have reproduced entrenched patterns of racial and economic inequality.

America the Beautiful and Violent is built around the powerful voices and insights of black youth in Chicago and their parents and communities. Voisin interweaves their narratives with data, research findings, and historical accounts that provide context for their experiences. He highlights the broad historical, political, economic, and racial factors that shape the construction, concentration, and narratives of violence in black neighborhoods. Voisin explores these forces and the violence they produce; the behavioral health consequences of repeated exposures to neighborhood violence; and the ways youth, families, and communities cope with such traumas. America the Beautiful and Violent offers a set of practice and policy recommendations to address the patchwork inequality that leads to concentrated violence and to support children and adolescents struggling with the precarious conditions and threat of violence in their daily lives.

Tonio - multiracial, different; born in Sicily to an American Black, Apache, Comanche mother, and a Sicilian father, and later moves to the US.

Tonio is a precocious, inquisitive child and often finds himself in hilarious (and precarious) situations growing up on a ranch for orphans in Kansas, and has many more adventures elsewhere.

At fifteen, Tonio robs a bank (no one would hire him) to buy a bike to get to a popular girl's party! He's caught and sent to the state reformatory in Buena Vista.

At seventeen, conditionally released, Tonio joins the Navy and becomes a wellrespected combat UDT frogman. Tonio strikes an officer who spat on him and is waiting for the Navy Brass decision regarding his future.

Tonio then unknowingly enters a White's Only bar for a cherry coke. There he fights a man who called him a nigger, and once again is sent to Buena Vista. An unfortunate event, surrounded by racism and jealousy, sends him to the Colorado State Penitentiary to a cell on death row.

As the truth comes out and with the help of many, Tonio is released with a full pardon. He goes on to become a Navy Seal and an accomplished "outrageous" architect who is active in the civil rights movement.

Unwind the story of an unexpected life. Tonio's twists, tumbles and successes will draw you into this fascinating account of a multiracial youth and man finding his way. Tonio's life is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished even after many mistakes, bad decisions, unfortunate events and hard challenges.

Motivated by his own experiences and the desire to make a difference, Tonio felt compelled to share his remarkable story with others. In his books, Tonio offers a profound and inspiring account of his unique and tumultuous journey, highlighting the power of resilience, redemption, and the human capacity for change. Through his poignant words he aims to inspire readers, particularly the young, to believe in their own potential, to find hope in even the darkest of circumstances, and to accept help from others.

Anything is possible when terrific people of different colors and races work together, and with the guidance of something greater than us.

Rape Revolvers & Ropes The heinous 1930 lynching of two black youths and the elusive pursuit of justice【電子書籍】[ James Ferrell ]

Anarchy & Amnesia in Small Town America

In 1930, three joy-riding black youths robbed a young white couple parked on Lover’s Lane. One of the youths shot the white man five times while his girl friend claimed that one of the three raped her. Local law enforcement quickly located the three, interrogated them and locked them up in the county jail. The next day, the white man succumbed to his wounds. That night a mob of angry white-folks stormed the jail and removed all three suspects. They lynched two of the teens and inexplicably returned the third suspect to the jail.

County and state prosecutors began a crusade to locate, prosecute and convict the mob members who hung the two. However, they discovered the whole town had difficulty remembering details. This story also tracks the trial and subsequent life of the surviving sixteen-year old.

The author used dozens of articles from over twenty local, state and national newspapers along with several confidential depositions to reconstruct these events.

After reading this book, one needs to consider what if anything has really changed in America during the past 90 years?

About the Author

James Ferrell grew up in Marion, Indiana and has been curious about the events surrounding the 1930 lynching of two black teenagers on the lawn of Marion’s Court House since he was a teenager. Finally, as an adult, he was determined to discover what really happened in his home town. The result is this book. While researching, Ferrell obtained a MA in History to help him to document his findings.

Although this is his first book, Ferrell has written for business and technical publications for over twenty-five years. Jim and his wife Louise reside in Buckeye, Arizona.
