It highlights the experience of circus artists as their skills develop and mature into public performances that create aesthetic and emotional values in the modern economy of live spectacles. It scrutinizes the meaning that circus acts produce for the spectators and for the artists themselves who live this process from the inside. This is a book for those studying semiotics and wanting to see it applied to a real life milieu in accessible and passionate prose.

The Meaning of the Circus is grounded on the personal experience of Professor Paul Bouissac as both a circus entrepreneur and a researcher with decades of primary material on the significance of past and contemporary circus acts. It is based on substantial accounts provided by many men and women who have agreed to share the challenges, joys, and anxieties of their life as artists. The Young Acrobat Of The Great North American Circus【電子書籍】[ Horatio Alger ]

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 ? July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. Alger's name is often invoked incorrectly as though he himself rose from rags to riches, but that arc applied to his characters, not to the author. Essentially, all of Alger's novels are the same: a young boy struggles through hard work to escape poverty. Critics, however, are quick to point out that it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty, which brings him into contact with a wealthy elder gentleman, who takes the boy in as a ward. The boy might return a large sum of money that was lost or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, bringing the boy--and his plight--to the attention of some wealthy individual. It has been suggested that this reflects Alger's own patronizing attitude to the boys he tried to help.
-wikipedia

The Adventures of Mr. Maximillian Bacchus and His Travelling Circus【電子書籍】[ Clive Barker ]

Maximillian Bacchus is the ringmaster, ruler, guide and owner of what he considers the greatest show in the world. Traveling with a Crocodile named Malachi, a trapeze girl named Ophelia, a strong mane they call Hero, which is short for Hieronymus a clown named Domingo de Ybarrondo, who paints in a wagon pulled by a giant "Ibis bird," the troupe wanders from adventure to adventure with mythic aplomb. From the first story, in which Indigo Murphy, the best bird handler in the world leaves the show to join in matrimony with the Duke Lorenzo de Medici, to the fabled court of Kubla Khan, the magic never stops. You will meet a young apple thief named Angelo with magic eyes, and an orang-outang named Bathsheba, and a host of other amazing characters with names and personas cut like a patchwork quilt from the mythologies and dreams of the world. Though written forty years ago, these pages are littered with the same magical side steps that have always been woven into Clive Barker's fiction. The Bear Family at Home and How the Circus Came to Visit Them【電子書籍】[ Curtis D. Wilbur ]

One night, after the wagons and the animals had all been put on board the cars, the fireman rang the bell, and the engineer started the train, and away it went, whistling and coughing down the track. The animals were so used to the train going rattle-te-bang, rattle-te-bang, all night long, that they all went to sleep, and remained asleep a long while. While the animals and every one on the train, except the engineer and the fireman, were asleep, the engineer looked ahead and suddenly saw a big rock on the track. He blew the whistle, "Toot-toot," to call the brakemen, and the brakemen ran as fast as they could and began to put on the brakes to stop the train, but the train came nearer and nearer to the big rock. The poor engineer couldn't stop the train, and the brakemen couldn't stop the train, so the engine ran into the rock, and was knocked off the track, and turned a somersault, and was smashed all to pieces, and all the cars ran off the track into a ditch, and the wagons were all broken, so that the animals got out of their cages and found they were free in the dark woods. They were all so glad to be free that they ran away as fast as they could and hid in the woods; all except the Cub Bear and a friend of his, a monkey named Jim. They ran a little way, and then the Cub Bear stopped and looked around. He saw a path, then he looked at the trees and the mountain and he thought he would wait there until morning. As soon as it was light the Cub Bear looked way up on the mountain side and saw a cave, and where do you suppose they were? In the very same forest where the Cub Bear was born. They walked a little way, and the Cub Bear said: "Why, here is the path where little brother Jimmie Bear lost his foot in a trap." They ran up that path as fast as they could to the cave in the mountains. The Cub Bear's heart was beating very fast, pit-a-pat, pit-a-pat, because he knew that this was his old home, and he wondered whether his Papa Bear and Mamma Bear and his little Susie Bear and little brother Jimmie Bear were still there. They went in very quietly, and found a great big brown bear asleep. When the big brown bear heard them come in, he jumped up quickly and looked at little Cub Bear, and little Cub Bear looked at him. It was the Papa Bear! He ran to the Cub Bear and put his arms around him and gave him a great bear hug. You know bears can hug awfully tight. Papa Bear hugged the Cub Bear, and the Cub Bear hugged the Papa Bear, and they were very, very glad to see each other. The Papa Bear woke up the Mamma Bear, and then the Mamma Bear gave the Cub Bear a great bear hug, because she was so glad to see him. Susie Bear waked up and gave the little Cub Bear a big bear hug. But Jimmie Bear was not there. Did you ever give your papa a bear hug? After the Papa Bear and the Mamma Bear had talked a little while to the Cub Bear, they said, "We have something to show you," and they took the Cub Bear away back into the back part of the cave and showed him the sweetest, cutest little baby bear you ever saw in your life, and the Papa Bear said: "We call this little baby bear 'Cub Bear' now. So we will have to call you 'Circus Bear' after this," for the little Cub Bear had told his papa and mamma that he had been in the circus while away.

Human Trafficking is a crime which happens everywhere in the world and even if people may not believe it's still an issue it happens everywhere. There are different types of exploitation and even children and elderly people are not safe from this crime against humanity. Some people may be trafficked sexually and forced to work in a brothel or 'massage parlor where they are held against their will and forced to work. Others may be put to work in forced labor where they are promised a large amount of money to change their lives only tricked into working in unsafe and dangerous conditions.

I write about these topics because though I identify as a horror writer, I've been through experiences and know people who've been through serious trauma. I write to inform people and to push people to take a positive action after reading my books. Though I enjoy writing for shock value I also like to write to use my expression and passion for writing to find my own humanity.

Just a warning, I tend to go to a very dark place when I write. I don't hold back and like to write about the most traumatic experiences and I enjoy making my readers uncomfortable. I recognize that even if I'm extremely lucky to craft a fabricated story that there are many others who have true accounts of real trauma. I can only hope that such people are somewhere safe now and have accessed health, healing and compassion from the general public.

In my recent book I WRITE MY TRAFFICKERS HATE LETTERS WITH MY MENSTRUAL BLOOD I touched on the issue of sexual trafficking and did my best to write a realistic story. I wrote the story in first person to make the reader relate to the situation I was trying to convey and just how easy it may be to fall into that world. I wrote that previous story because a former partner was trafficked and I spent time reading horrible accounts of anonymous stories on Nordic Model Now.

In this book I'll be writing a fictional account of what someone who has been trafficked in a labor camp may experience and the work environment they may find themselves in. Please be aware that even if it happens in the real world that this book will NOT be talking about sexual trafficking of children. However, this book will be mentioning children, elderly, healthy adults, unhealthy adults and teenagers being forced to work in an unsafe environment and exploited in a workplace.

Some of the scenarios I'll be discussing will involve emotional abuse, black mail, threatening of visa and citizenship, people being dehumanized, beaten and kept in cages. Death threats, verbal, emotional and physical abuse. I want to be upfront about my content because it is up to my readers to decide whether they can stomach the content.

Please do not read any further if you may be upset by such material.

Rock and Roll Meltdown The Circus Nightclub Story 1979 ? 1983【電子書籍】[ Rick Bandazian ]

In 1979, rock and roll was in revolution. While FM radio covered the nation with a nonstop format of Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Kansas, Styx, Led Zeppelin, and more Fleetwood Mac, it was a different story in rock clubs all over America. In dingy, sweaty venues from LA to New York, punk rock and new wave bands were rewriting the story of rock and roll. And in New Jersey, the club scene was exploding as a result of the drinking age having been lowered to eighteen just a few years earlier. By this time, the rock and roll storm had already been brewing for several years. From Ramsey to Carteret, from Hoboken and Fort Lee, to the little town of Bergenfield, it was a time of great clubs and even greater music. Brothers Rick and Jack ? barely out of their teens themselves ? and their dad, Jack Sr., opened one of the premiere rock clubs in the New York metropolitan area. They had to hustle and learn the ropes quickly while dealing with underage drinkers, nightly fights, the out of control drug scene, local authorities, and a pool of seasoned sharks that were controlling the entertainment industry. Cyndi Lauper, The Ramones, Papa John Creach, New Riders of the Purple Sage, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Johnny Thunders, Twisted Sister, David Johansen, Robert Hunter, Rick Danko, Joe Perry, Steve Forbert; they were all there, live on stage and in your face. The cover bands and tribute acts that performed up and down the East Coast were phenomenal too, sometimes even outdrawing the recording artists. This book chronicles those times, and gives a first-hand account of a club owner's recollections of that famed era, and the fallen rock scene that followed. You'll be captivated by interviews with band members, rock fans, and former employees, who witnessed this special time in rock history, who tell their story as only they can. The author places you in the front row and gives you a peek behind the curtain of a rock club at the center of this revolution.

Over a half century, a small Indiana town hosts a circus troupe during the off-seasons in linked stories "as graceful as any acrobat's high-wire act" ( San Francisco Chronicle).
A Story Prize Finalist
From 1884 to 1939, the Great Porter Circus made the unlikely choice to winter in an Indiana town called Lima, a place that feels as classic as Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, and as wondrous as a first trip to the Big Top. In Lima, an elephant can change the course of a man's lifeーor the manner of his death. Jennie Dixianna entices men with her dazzling Spin of Death and keeps them in line with secrets locked in a cedar box. The lonely wife of the show's manager has each room of her house painted like a sideshow banner, indulging her desperate passion for a young painter. And a former clown seeks consolation from his loveless marriage in his post-circus job at Clown Alley Cleaners. In this collection of linked stories spanning decades, Cathy Day follows the circus people into their everyday lives and brings the greatest show on earth to the page.
"[An] exquisite story collection." ー The Washington Post
"Often funny, always graceful, and rich with a mix of historical and imaginative detail." ーTim O'Brien, author of The Things They Carried
"Sublimely imaginative and affecting." ー The Boston Globe

It seems his beloved Elaine is not so ‘incomparable’ after all.
The Earl is Lynetta’s Knight in Shining Armour as he smuggles her away, rolled up Cleopatra-like in a rug. Pursued by murderous revolutionaries, they make their escape posing as honeymooning newlyweds under the nose of Napoleon Bonaparte himself.
But secretly love struck Lynetta yearns for their swooning charade to be real and forever.

A Circus For Love

In a thrillingly romantic twist on the age-old “boy runs away to join the circus” tale, beautiful young heiress Thelma overhears her wicked stepmother plotting to get her hands on Thelma’s fortune by forcing her to marry her stepmother’s lover.
Horrified, Thelma flees on her beloved horse Dragonfly.
