Courtside A Memoir of Life, Learning, Law & Purpose【電子書籍】[ Derick Loury ]

Courtside, by Derick Loury is an autobiography detailing the growth, development, and challenges of a man with a rich range of experiences throughout his life. Basketball becomes a grounding and centering point for him, inspiring him on and off the court. He becomes a talented player throughout high school and college, though ultimately follows a different path once reaching adulthood and he cycles through a few jobs before joining law enforcement and, eventually, becoming a prison warden. He has many relationships along the way, friends and family that impact his life. The book is divided into three main sections?aptly titled with basketball terms?that chronicle grade school, college, and life after college. Though high school had set him up for a bright future in basketball, even earning him a scholarship to college, various obstacles kept him from achieving any true momentum with the sport. After many set-backs and life challenges, he finds a new passion and career in Law Enforcement which would eventually lead to his current career as a prison warden. Basketball remained a passion as he sought to organize leagues to give back to his community or to officiate for various schools. This book succeeds in an interesting combination of styles, while not quite being strictly any of them. It has a stream-of-consciousness feel while maintaining a linear drive forward through the author's life. At times it reads very factual and textbook like, which feels authentic to the author's style and experiences. He blends lists and facts with a distinct narrative voice to properly capture his unique perspective on life and its many challenges.

Southview to Gettysvue From a Coal Camp to Olympic Podium, to Courtside with Michael Jordan【電子書籍】[ Bill Schmidt ]

Born in a coal camp in Southview, Pennsylvania, to a German immigrant father who was a coal miner for thirty-seven years, my future looked preordained. I was headed to the coal mines or the steel mills in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was just a way of life in Appalachia, and the measurement of success was just getting a job, eventually getting married, and raising a family--a good life by everyone's standards who worked and lived there.

The Southview mine, Montour No. 1, opened in 1914 and was owned by the Pittsburgh Coal Company. They paid their employees in company script that could only be spent at the company store. Housing was built by the coal company and eventually purchased by the miners. There was a two-room school with grades 1-4 in one room and grades 5-8 in the other. All the homes had outhouses, and the Sears and Roebuck catalog was the only toilet paper of choice.

My dad committed suicide when my twin brother, Bob, and I were two and a half years old. We have no recollection of him at all. My mother was left to raise six children without a husband or a provider. She was a remarkable lady who ruled with a firm hand and the "fear of God."

Growing up, I was a shy scrawny kid whose best friend and competitor was my identical twin brother, Bob. We were inseparable. We eventually migrated to sports and realized we might have a way out. I was a very private person throughout my career in competitive sports and in the business of sports. Of course, we had dreams of succeeding, and that's what drove us to succeed, but we didn't share those dreams with anyone.

Having no coaching or athletic scholarships, I was a walk-on athlete. I graduated from college and made the 1972 US Olympic Team and won an Olympic bronze medal at the Munich Olympics in 1972 in the javelin throw. I began my career in sports marketing, a career which, in 1981, had yet to be defined as a career.

Having worked as vice president of Sports at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and later as vice president of Worldwide Sports Marketing at Gatorade, my career and my core competencies developed; and I was successful above my wildest dreams. With the dreams, hard work paved the path to my success. My deep faith in God as my Savior provided me divine guidance and intervention along the way.

So when I shared some of my life experiences, my friends said, "You need to write a book. It will be motivational and inspiring." After three years of work, I'm humbled and honored to share my story.

Playing it Safe How the Supreme Court Sidesteps Hard Cases and Stunts the Development of Law【電子書籍】[ Lisa Kloppenberg ]

It is one of the unspoken truths of the American judicial system that courts go out of their way to avoid having to decide important and controversial issues. Even the Supreme Court from which the entire nation seeks guidance frequently engages in transparent tactics to avoid difficult, politically sensitive cases.
The Court's reliance on avoidance has been inconsistent and at times politically motivated. For example, liberal New Deal Justices, responding to the activism of a conservative Court, promoted deference to Congress and the presidency to protect the Court from political pressure. Likewise, as the Warren Court recognized new constitutional rights, conservative judges and critics praised avoidance as a foundational rule of judicial restraint. And as conservative Justices have constituted the majority on the Court in recent years, many liberals and moderates have urged avoidance, for fear of disagreeable verdicts.
By sharing the stories of litigants who struggled unsuccessfully to raise before the Supreme Court constitutional matters of the utmost importance from the 1970s-1990s, Playing it Safe argues that judges who fail to exercise their power in hard cases in effect abdicate their constitutional responsibility when it is needed most, and in so doing betray their commitment to neutrality. Lisa Kloppenberg demonstrates how the Court often avoids socially sensitive cases, such as those involving racial and ethnic discrimination, gender inequalities, abortion restrictions, sexual orientation discrimination, and environmental abuses. In the process, the Court ducks its responsibility to check the more politically responsive branches of government when "majority rule" pushes the boundaries of constitutional law. The Court has not used these malleable doctrines evenhandedly: it has actively shielded states from liability and national oversight, and aggressively expanded standing requirements to limit the role of federal courts.
