Per via del suo orientamento politico venne arrestato nel 1939 e rinchiuso in un lager nazista. Sar? qui che Josef ?apek si affider? per la prima volta alla poesia. Prima che finisse la guerra, alcuni componimenti riuscirono a raggiungere Praga, per mano di studenti universitari che da Sachsenhausen nel 1943 fecero ritorno nella capitale boema. A questi si aggiunsero le copie delle poesie che alcuni detenuti vicini allo scrittore riportarono in patria dopo la guerra. Il 25 febbraio del 1945 Josef ?apek venne trasportato nel campo di concentramento di Bergen-Belsen, dove mor?, probabilmente a causa dell’epidemia di tifo che decim? i prigionieri rimasti nel lager, pochi giorni prima dell’arrivo delle truppe inglesi. ?apek scrisse la sua ultima poesia ?Prima del grande viaggio“ (P?ed velikou cestou) nel campo di concentramento di Sachsenhausen in prossimit? dell’ultimo trasporto. Le edizioni La prima edizione delle poesie risale al 1946 (Fr. Borov?, Praha) e si deve alla cura del poeta Vladim?r Holan, al quale, Jarmila ?apek, moglie di Josef, aveva dato in lettura le poesie ricevute durante la guerra. Le edizioni successive (Odeon, Praga, 1980 ? Tri?da, Praga, 2010), curate dal critico letterario Ji?? Opel?k, presentano una ricostruzione puntuale e completa dell’intera raccolta che conta in tutto 121 poesie. Di recente in Germania ? stata pubblicata in traduzione (con testo a fronte) una scelta di poesie (Josef ?apek, Gedichte aus dem KZ, Arco, Wuppertal, 2016), curata da Urs Heftrich ? che ne ? anche il traduttore ? e Ji?? Opel?k. L’edizione tedesca contiene 44 poesie. La traduzione italiana ? condotta sul testo dell’edizione ceca del 2010 (cos? come quella tedesca).
