Diplomat in Japan An Inner History of the Critical Years in the Evolution of Japan【電子書籍】[ Ernest Satow ]
|

A fascinating inside account of the epic clash between the Japanese in the West in its earliest days.

Sir Ernest Satow entered the British diplomatic service in 1861, a fresh graduate of London University, shortly arriving in Yokohama as the pressure of the Western powers heightened to force Japan from her self-imposed seclusion. This illustrated work, written between 1885 and 1921, offers his intriguing firsthand account of the critical years which led to the final overthrow of the Shogunate, the restoration of direct rule to the ancient line of emperors and, indeed, to the birth of modern Japan. It was a period of momentous importance for Japan, and of crucial significance in global history.

Based on diary notes kept without interruption during twenty years of service in Japan, Satow reconstructs the strange and occasionally hazardous world confronting foreigners in those early days. Combining astute personal insight with a direct knowledge of the details of treaties and the circumstances of their negotiation, he provides a unique and authentic inner history of the events which finally brought Japan onto the international scene.

A Moveable Feast【電子書籍】[ Ernest Hemingway ]

Begun in the autumn of 1957 and published posthumously in 1964, Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast captures what it meant to be young and poor and writing in Paris during the 1920s. A correspondent for the Toronto Star, Hemingway arrived in Paris in 1921, three years after the trauma of the Great War and at the beginning of the transformation of Europe's cultural landscape: Braque and Picasso were experimenting with cubist form; James Joyce, long living in self-imposed exile from his native Dublin, had just completed Ulysses; Gertrude Stein held court at 27 Rue de Fleurus, and deemed young Ernest a member of une generation perdue; and T.S. Eliot was a bank clerk in London. It was during these years that the as-of-yet unpublished young writer gathered the material for his first novel The Sun Also Rises, and the subsequent masterpieces that followed.

Across the River and Into the Trees【電子書籍】[ Ernest Hemingway ]
|

Across the River and Into the Trees is a novel by American writer Ernest Hemingway, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in September 1950. Prior to publication the novel wasserialized in Cosmopolitan magazine. The title is derived from the last words of Confederate General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson.

The opening of the novel is set in Trieste, on the last day in the life of the protagonist, Colonel Richard Cantwell. Much of the novel is a protracted flashback, during which Cantwell reminisces about a young Venetian woman, Renata, and his life as a soldier during the war. An important theme in the novel is that of death and how one faces death. One biographer and critic sees a parallel between Hemingway's Across the River and Into the Trees and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. Generally critics agree the novel is built upon successive layers of symbolism. As in his other writing, Hemingway employs the style known as the iceberg theory, in which much of the substance of the work lies below the surface of the plot itself.

The novel was written in Italy, Cuba and France. While visiting Italy, Hemingway met a young woman with whom he had a protracted relationship which has been defined as a father-daughter relationship. The woman, Adriana Ivancich, became the model for the female character in the novel. With some exceptions, Across the River and Into the Trees was poorly received, and was the first of Hemingway's novels to receive consistently bad press. In the years since its publication, however, some critics have come to believe it is an important addition to the Hemingway canon.

The Biography of a Grizzly【電子書籍】[ Ernest Thompson Seton ]

NEARLY half a century has gone since I lived among these scenes and made my observations on the grand Old Bear of the Mountains. Many new conditions have in that time developed, have changed the course of history. But the biggest, saddest change of all is that the Grizzly Bear, the most magnificent, dignified, and powerful beast of the wild, heroic West, is gone. There may be a few individuals about Yellowstone Park or other great havens, but the Grizzly Bear as the wide-wandering monarch of the hills has gone the way of the Dodo. It is just possible that in this last and latest time a newborn strong and growing sentiment will come to the rescue, will prompt us to seek out and preserve the last remnant, just as long-belated appreciation came at final stance to save for later generations the Great Sequoia Tree, when man's blind avarice had all but wiped it out. Good men are now at work with better thoughts, and reverence for the masterpieces, the giants of creation's world. It may be that this newer thought may come in force and save the grand old Bear while yet it curbs his power for harm. This is my hope and prayer; this is the sentiment unwritten, but expressed, in my Story of the Grizzly.

'It made me rethink the roots of our deepest fears and insecurities, and why we often disappoint ourselves in how we manifest them' Bill Clinton, Guardian

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work, The Denial of Death is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the 'why' of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie - man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality.

The book argues that human civilisation is a defence against the knowledge that we are mortal beings. Becker states that humans live in both the physical world and a symbolic world of meaning, which is where our 'immortality project' resides. We create in order to become immortal - to become part of something we believe will last forever. In this way we hope to give our lives meaning.

In The Denial of Death, Becker sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates decades after it was written.

What Religious Science Teaches【電子書籍】[ Ernest Holmes ]
|

Religious Science is not a personal opinion, nor is it a special revelation. It is a result of the best thought of the ages. It borrows much of its light from others, but in so doing, robs no one, for Truth is universal.
The Christian Bible, perhaps the greatest book ever written, truly points a way to eternal values. But there are many other bibles, all of which taken together weave the story of spiritual Truth into a unified pattern.
All peoples have had their bibles, as all have had their religions; all have pointed a way to ultimate values, but can we say that any of them has really pointed the way? It is unreasonable to suppose that any one person, or people, encompasses all truth, and that they alone can reveal the way of life to others.
Taking the best from all sources, Religious Science has access to the highest enlightenment of the ages. Religious Science reads everyman's bible and gleans the truths contained therein. It studies all peoples' thought and draws from each that which is true. Without criticism, without judgment, but by true discrimination, that which is true and provable may be discovered and put to practical use.
What is Truth? Where may it be found? And how used? These are the questions that intelligent people ask. They find their answer in the study of Religious Science. Shorn of dogmatism, freed from superstition, and always ready for greater illumination, Religious Science offers the student of life the best that the world has so far discovered.
It has been well said that "religions are many, but Religion is one." The varying faiths of humankind are unnumbered, but the primal faith of the race is today, as of old, the One Faith; an instinctive reliance upon the Unseen, which we have learned to call God.
Religion is One. Faith is One. Truth is One.
