Too Many Miracles A Novel【電子書籍】[ Ernest L. Schusky ]
|

Father Hector, trained in agronomy and extension, delights in farming. When the bishop appoints him to San Miguel in the mountains of Mexico, he feels his prayers have been answered. The bishop's agenda differs. He directs Hector to convince the Indian congregants that miracles are not the frequent events that they are reporting. When Hector reaches San Miguel, he confronts a Protestant evangelical, who is encouraging villagers to plant cash crops and use new pesticides and modern technology. Instead of battling for souls, Hector must pit sustainable agriculture and appropriate technology against his rival. Hector's empathy and hard work win out over the charisma and charm of the Protestant, but his attempts to reduce the frequency of miracles at San Miguel are a different matter.

An Introduction to Nature-study【電子書籍】[ Ernest Stenhouse ]
|

One of the most encouraging of recent educational movements is the increasing importance attached, both in this country and abroad, to what is called Nature-Study. It is evident that the instruction contemplated differs as widely, on the one hand, from the traditional object-lessons on polar bears and ironclads, as it differs from formal Biology on the other. This difference is abundantly shown, not only by the circulars and syllabuses issued by our own Board of Education, but by the publications of the leading educational authorities of Europe and America. The aim of Nature-Study, as thus laid down, is not primarily the acquisition of the facts of natural history: it is rather a training in methods of open-eyed, close, and accurate observation, especially of familiar animals and plants, which shall teach the student tosee what he looks at, and to think about what he sees. It is in a spirit of entire agreement with these views that this book has been written. No previous knowledge of Biology on the part of the reader is assumed, and technical terms have as far as possible been dispensed with. In drawing up the course, I have had in mind throughout the attitude of an intelligent youth of sixteen, and the work will be found to be well within the powers of such a student. Teachers will, however, find no difficulty in adapting the exercises to the needs of younger pupils. Care has been taken to select, as types for study, animals and plants which are at the same time representative and easily obtainable, and I have been further guided in the selection by the Board of Education Syllabuses of the King’s Scholarship Examination and Section I. of the Elementary Stage of General Biology, the subjects of which are included in the volume. The book has, however, a considerably wider scope than is indicated in these syllabuses, and will therefore, I hope, be found useful not only in schools and training-colleges, and to examination candidates, but also to members of field clubs and to students of natural history generally. It has been necessary to arrange the chapters with some attempt at logical sequence, but it is not supposed that this order will be adhered to in practice; by the aid of the monthly nature-calendar, together with numerous cross-references, it will be found easy to take up the work at any point. The chapters are divided into sections, each of which consists of two parts: First, precise instructions for practical observations and experiments, designed to exercise the reasoning faculties of the students; and, second, a descriptive portion, in which the meaning and relation of the results obtained are discussed. At the end of each chapter is a number of additional exercises, either original or taken from past examination papers. Of the latter class, questions to which dates are affixed have been set by the Board of Education, while those marked “N.F.U.” are selected from National Froebel Union tests. In many cases, the exercises provide subjects for further observation and experiment, as well as for written description.

The Crest of the Continent: A Summer's Ramble in the Rocky Mountains and Beyond Journey Through the Majestic Rocky Mountains: A Naturalist's Adventure【電子書籍】[ Ernest Ingersoll ]
|

In "The Crest of the Continent: A Summer's Ramble in the Rocky Mountains and Beyond," Ernest Ingersoll masterfully combines vivid descriptions of the majestic Rockies with a poignant exploration of nature's sublimity. Through a series of reflective essays, Ingersoll employs a conversational literary style that invites readers to experience the grandeur of the American West alongside him. His keen observations are underpinned by a profound appreciation for the landscape, while also situating his narrative within the broader context of 19th-century American transcendentalism, which championed the beauty and spiritual significance of nature. Ernest Ingersoll was a noted naturalist and journalist whose extensive travels and deep-seated love for the wilderness significantly influenced his writing. His background in both literature and natural history allowed him to draw parallels between the physical sensations of the wilderness and the emotional responses of the human spirit. Ingersoll'??s profound respect for the environment was not only ideological; it was also a reflection of a period when America was grappling with its identity amid the rapid changes brought about by industrialization. This eloquent and insightful account is a must-read for lovers of nature writing, adventure, and American literature. Ingersoll'??s evocative prose will not only transport you to the breathtaking vistas of the Rocky Mountains but will also encourage a deeper introspection into our relationship with the natural world. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or a literary aficionado, this volume is sure to leave a lasting impression.

South The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917【電子書籍】[ Ernest Shackleton ]

Hailed as "a rousing read" by The New York Times, this breathtaking chronicle of Antarctic exploration was written by expedition leader Sir Ernest Shackleton. In 1914 he and his 28-man crew boarded the ship Endurance and sailed away to do something no one had ever done: to traverse and chart the mostly unknown territory of the South Pole. But within weeks of their arrival, their vessel became trapped in ice, drifting helplessly for months before sinking and leaving the crew stranded on a melting ice floe. This account of the expedition's two-year struggle in one of the world's most uninhabitable regions relates a near-miraculous escape from multiple dangers: thousands of miles, traveled in lifeboats across tempestuous seas and in unforgiving landscapes of glaciers and icebergs; relentless cold; and the constant threat of starvation. A century later, Shackleton's firsthand account of the crew's harrowing experiences and their triumphant survival remains among the most thrilling adventure stories ever told.

HAVE you ever seen El Sol, the Chief of the Wonder-workers, brother to Mother Carey? Yes, you have, though probably you did not know it; at least you could not look him in the face. Well, I am going to tell you about him, and tell of a sad thing that happened to him, and to some one whom he loved more than words can tell. Tall and of blazing beauty was El Sol, the King of the Wonder-workers; his hair was like shining gold, and stood straight out a yard from his head, as he marched over the hilltops. Everyone loved him, except a very few, who once had dared to fight him, and had been worsted. Everyone else loved him, and he liked everybody, without really loving them. Until one day, as he walked in his garden, he suddenly came on a beautiful white maiden, whom he had never seen before. Her eyes were of the loveliest blue, her hair was so soft that it floated on the air, and her robe was white, covered with ferns done in white lace. He fell deeply in love with her at once, but she waved a warning hand, when he tried to come near. "Who are you, oh radiant princess? I love you even before I hear you speak." "I am Snowroba, the daughter of the great King Jackfrost," she said. "I love you as I never loved any one. Will you marry me? I am the King of the Wonder-workers. I will make you the Queen." "No," said she, "I cannot marry you, for it is written that if one of my people marry one of your people, she will sink down and die in a day." Then El Sol was very sad. But he said, "May I not see you again?" "Yes," she answered, "I will meet you here in the morning, for it is pleasant to look on your beauty," and her voice tinkled sweetly. So she met him in the morning, and again on the third morning. He loved her madly now, and though she held back, he seized her in his arms and kissed her tenderly. Then her arms fell weakly to her sides, and her eyes half closed as she said: "I know now that the old writing spake truth. I love you, I love you, my love; but you have killed me." And she sank down, a limp white form, on the leafy ground. El Sol was wild with grief. He tried to revive her, to bring her back. She only whispered, "Good-bye, my love. I am going fast. You will see me no more, but come to this place a year from now. It may be Maka Ina will be kind, and will send you a little one that is yours and mine." Her white body melted away, as he bent over it and wept. He came back every morning, but saw Snowroba no more. One year from that day, as he lingered sadly over the sacred spot, he saw a new and wonderful flower come forth. Its bloom was of the tenderest violet blue, and it was full of expression. As he gazed, he saw those eyes again; the scalding tears dropped from his eyes, and burned its leaves into a blotched and brownish colour. He remembered, and understood her promise now. He knew that this was their blue-eyed little one.

The Book of the Ocean【電子書籍】[ Ernest Ingersoll ]
|

Looking at the land, we divide the surface of the earth into eastern and western hemispheres; but looking at the water, we make an opposite classification. Encircle the globe in your library with a rubber band, so that it cuts across South America from about Porto Alegre to Lima on one side, and through southern Siam and the northernmost of the Philippine Islands on the other, and you make hemispheres, the northern of which (with London at its center) contains almost all the land of the globe, while the southern (with New Zealand as its central point) is almost entirely water, Australia, and the narrow southern half of South America being the only lands of consequence in its whole area. Observing the map in this way, noticing that, besides nearly a complete half-world of water south of your rubber equator, much of the northern hemisphere also is afloat, you are willing to believe the assertion that there is almost three times as much of the outside of the earth hidden under the waves as appears above them. The estimate in round numbers is one hundred and fifty million square (statute) miles of ocean surface, as compared with about fifty million square miles of land on the globe. To the people whose speculations in geography are the oldest that have come down to us, the earth seemed to be an island around which was perpetually flowing a river with no further shore visible. Beyond it, they thought, lay the abodes of the dead. This river, as the source of all other rivers and waters, was deified by the early Greeks and placed among their highest gods as Oceanus, whence our word “ocean.” Accompanying, or belonging to him, there grew up, in the fertile imagination of that poetic people, a large company of gods and goddesses, while men hid their absence of real knowledge by peopling the deep with quaint monsters. “The word for ‘ocean’ (mare) in the Latin tongue means, by derivation, a desert, and the Greeks spoke of it as ‘the barren brine.’” Over these old fables we need not linger. All the myths and guesswork that went before history represented the sea as older than the land, and told how creation began by lifting the earth above the universal waste of waters. The story in Genesis is only one of many such stories.

To describe Ernest in one word, it could only be earnest. He was a serious, determined, intense, committed, sincere, devout, sober, diligent, heartfelt manall synonyms to the word earnest. He was all of those and a little more. One time, Floyd said to me that he didnt know what happened to Ernest to make him like he was. So, Floyd, these many years later, I think the answer may be that Ernest just earnestly lived up to his name. The Writings of Ernest Shurtleff Holmes The Science of Mind; Creative Mind and Success; Creative Mind【電子書籍】[ Ernest Shurtleff Holmes ]
|

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes was the founder of the Church of Religious Science. Religious Science, like many New Thought faiths, emphasizes positive thinking, influence of circumstances through mental processes, recognition of a creative energy source and of natural law. Holmes had an immense influence on New Age beliefs, particularly his core philosophy that we create our own reality. 'The Science of Mind': Here is the complete first edition of 'The Science of Mind'. For the careful practitioner this is the preferred edition as later editions lacked the power and focus of this edition and were simply less readable. Here you will find six lessons and countless affirmations that will help you unlock the power of your mind and find higher truths. You wont find a guide to the science of the mind that is clearer and easier to use. With the power of right thinking you will find that a new, better world awaits you! 'Creative Mind and Success': 'Creative Mind and Success' is a guide to mental wellness and success. Like 'The Science of Mind', this book focuses on how the power of positive thinking can better your life, but it has more of a focus on financial well-being. This book is clearly a precursor to 'Think and Grow Rich' and 'The Secret'. 'Creative Mind': In 'Creative Mind', Ernest Shurtleff Holmes explores what it means to be a human being and how we all can become better human beings. He explores the role of man and God/Higher Power and how they can be, or are, one. This book will help your feel more in tune with the greater forces of the universe and be the best you that you can be.

|

In 1914, as the shadow of war falls across Europe, a party led by veteran explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton sets out to become the first to traverse the Antarctic continent. Their initial optimism is short-lived, however, as the ice field slowly thickens, encasing the ship Endurance in a death-grip, crushing their craft, and marooning 28 men on a polar ice floe. In an epic struggle of man versus the elements, Shackleton leads his team on a harrowing quest for survival over some of the most unforgiving terrain in the world. Icy, tempestuous seas full of gargantuan waves, mountainous glaciers and icebergs, unending brutal cold, and ever-looming starvation are their mortal foes as Shackleton and his men struggle to stay alive. What happened to those brave men forever stands as a testament to their strength of will and the power of human endurance. This is their story, as told by the man who led them. Ernest Shackleton was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Born in Kilkea, Athy, County Kildare, Ireland, Shackleton and his Anglo-Irish family moved to Sydenham in suburban south London when he was ten. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition 1901?1904, from which he was sent home early on health grounds, after he and his companions Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson set a new southern record by marching to latitude 82°S. During the second expedition 1907?1909 he and three companions established a new record Farthest South latitude at 88°S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Also, members of his team climbed Mount Erebus, the most active Antarctic volcano. For these achievements, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.

|

The Defense of Duffer’s Drift is one of the most important works ever written on small unit tactics and is required reading for junior officers in military organizations around the world. It was written by Major General Sir Ernest Dunlop Swinton in 1904 when Swinton was a Captain. It details a fictional encounter in the Boer War. The book is narrated by Lieutenant Backsight Forethought (BF) who has been left in command of 50 men to defend a ford in the river. BF has a series of dreams in which his force is defeated by the Boers. After each dream, BF analyzes his performance and determines lessons learned. By the final dream, his force is successful in holding out until relieved. The lessons BF learned are the timeless lessons of small unit tactics and are as valuable today as they were at the turn of the century. The prose are simple and powerful. This book is essential reading for soldiers and students of tactics or military history. This volume also includes introductory material from the U.S. Marine Corps, maps, illustrations, a hyperlinked glossary, and a hyperlinked table of contents.

The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Poetry A Critical Edition【電子書籍】[ Ernest Fenollosa ]
|

First published in 1919 by Ezra Pound, Ernest Fenollosa’s essay on the Chinese written language has become one of the most often quoted statements in the history of American poetics. As edited by Pound, it presents a powerful conception of language that continues to shape our poetic and stylistic preferences: the idea that poems consist primarily of images; the idea that the sentence form with active verb mirrors relations of natural force. But previous editions of the essay represent Pound’s understandingーit is fair to say, his appropriationーof the text. Fenollosa’s manuscripts, in the Beinecke Library of Yale University, allow us to see this essay in a different light, as a document of early, sustained cultural interchange between North America
and East Asia.

Pound’s editing of the essay obscured two important features, here restored to view: Fenollosa’s encounter with Tendai Buddhism and Buddhist ontology, and his concern with the dimension of sound in Chinese poetry.

This book is the definitive critical edition of Fenollosa’s important work. After a substantial Introduction, the text as edited by Pound is presented, together with his notes and plates. At the heart of the edition is the first full publication of the essay as Fenollosa wrote it, accompanied by the many diagrams, characters, and notes Fenollosa (and Pound) scrawled on the verso pages. Pound’s deletions, insertions, and alterations to Fenollosa’s sometimes ornate prose are meticulously captured, enabling readers to follow the quasi-dialogue between Fenollosa and his posthumous editor. Earlier drafts and related talks reveal the developmentof Fenollosa’s ideas about culture, poetry, and translation. Copious multilingual annotation is an important feature of the edition.

This masterfully edited book will be an essential resource for scholars and poets and a starting point for a renewed discussion of the multiple sources of American modernist poetry.

|

In "Captain Jinks, Hero," Crosby likely uses humor and wit to critique the glorification of war and militarism prevalent in society at the time. The protagonist, Captain Jinks, may be portrayed as a bumbling and inept military officer who finds himself in absurd and comical situations. Through the character of Captain Jinks, Crosby may challenge conventional notions of heroism and patriotism, highlighting the folly and senselessness of war.Ernest Crosby's writing style is characterized by its biting social commentary and advocacy for peace, justice, and human rights. He often used his literary works to champion causes such as pacifism, women's suffrage, and labor rights, aligning himself with the progressive movements of his era. While "Captain Jinks, Hero" may not be as well-known as some of Crosby's other works, readers interested in satire, social criticism, and the anti-war movement of the early 20th century may find value in this novel. Crosby's writing continues to resonate with audiences who appreciate literature that challenges conventional wisdom and calls attention to pressing social issues.
