Jewish Exiles’ Psychological Interpretations of Nazism【電子書籍】[ Avihu Zakai ]
|

This book examines works of four German-Jewish scholars who, in their places of exile, sought to probe the pathology of the Nazi mind: Wilhelm Reich’s The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1933), Erich Fromm’s Escape from Freedom (1941), Siegfried Kracauer’s From Caligari to Hitler: A Psychological History of the German Film (1947), and Erich Neumann’s Depth Psychology and a New Ethic (1949). While scholars have examined these authors’ individual legacies, no comparative analysis of their shared concerns has yet been undertaken, nor have the content and form of their psychological inquiries into Nazism been seriously and systematically analyzed. Yet, the sense of urgency in their works calls for attention. They all took up their pens to counter Nazi barbarism, believing, like the English jurist and judge Sir William Blackstone, who wrote in 1753 - scribere est agere ("to write is to act").

The Compatriots The Brutal and Chaotic History of Russia's Exiles, ?migr?s, and Agents Abroad【電子書籍】[ Andrei Soldatov ]
|

The authors of The Red Web examine the shifting role of Russian expatriates throughout history, and their complicated, unbreakable relationship with the mother country--be it antagonistic or far too chummy.

The history of Russian espionage is soaked in blood, from a spontaneous pistol shot that killed a secret policeman in Romania in 1924 to the attempt to poison an exiled KGB colonel in Salisbury, England, in 2017. Russian ?migr?s have found themselves continually at the center of the mayhem.

Russians began leaving the country in big numbers in the late nineteenth century, fleeing pogroms, tsarist secret police persecution, and the Revolution, then Stalin and the KGB--and creating the third-largest diaspora in the world. The exodus created a rare opportunity for the Kremlin. Moscow's masters and spymasters fostered networks of spies, many of whom were emigrants driven from Russia. By the 1930s and 1940s, dozens of spies were in New York City gathering information for Moscow.

But the story did not end with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some ?migr?s have turned into assets of the resurgent Russian nationalist state, while others have taken up the dissident challenge once more--at their personal peril. From Trotsky to Litvinenko, The Compatriots is the gripping history of Russian score-settling around the world.

Exiles A Play in Three Acts【電子書籍】[ James Joyce ]
|

In "Exiles," James Joyce crafts a poignant exploration of themes such as betrayal, love, and identity through the lens of a modernist play. The narrative revolves around the tumultuous relationship between Richard Rowan, a disillusioned writer wrestling with his reflections on fidelity and emotional honesty, and his wife, Beatrice. Joyce's distinctively intricate use of language and dialogue creates a psychologically charged atmosphere, allowing the audience to delve into the inner workings of its characters who grapple with their desires and societal expectations, set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Dublin. James Joyce, renowned for his revolutionary contributions to literature, particularly in works like "Ulysses" and "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," penned "Exiles" during a transitional period in his life, revealing his personal struggles with exile, belonging, and artistic integrity. Joyce's own experiences of living abroad and his complex relationships informed the play, making it a rich, semi-autobiographical reflection on his pursuit of truth and artistic freedom. This compelling play is highly recommended not only for its innovative structure and deep psychological insight but also for its exploration of universal human experiences that resonate across time. Readers seeking to uncover the intricate tapestry of Joyce's thoughts on love and exile will find "Exiles" both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

Jewish Exiles and European Thought in the Shadow of the Third Reich Baron, Popper, Strauss, Auerbach【電子書籍】[ David Weinstein ]
|

Hans Baron, Karl Popper, Leo Strauss and Erich Auerbach were among the many German-speaking Jewish intellectuals who fled Continental Europe with the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. Their scholarship, though not normally considered together, is studied here to demonstrate how, despite their different disciplines and distinctive modes of working, they responded polemically in the guise of traditional scholarship to their shared trauma. For each, the political calamity of European fascism was a profound intellectual crisis, requiring an intellectual response which Weinstein and Zakai now contextualize, ideologically and politically. They exemplify just how extensively, and sometimes how subtly, 1930s and 1940s scholarship was used not only to explain, but to fight the political evils that had infected modernity, victimizing so many. An original perspective on a popular area of research, this book draws upon a mass of secondary literature to provide an innovative and valuable contribution to twentieth-century intellectual history.

They Used to Call Us Witches Chilean Exiles, Culture, and Feminism【電子書籍】[ Julie Shayne ]
|

They Used to Call Us Witches is an informative, highly readable account of the role played by Chilean women exiles during the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet from 1973-1990. Sociologist Julie Shayne looks at the movement organized by exiled Chileans in Vancouver, British Columbia, to denounce Pinochet's dictatorship and support those who remained in Chile. Through the use of extensive interviews, the history is told from the perspective of Chilean women in the exile community established in Vancouver. Shayne tells the very human story of these exiled Chilean women, and in doing so, provides a glimpse into the struggle of other Chilean exile communities around the world. In addition to the Chilean women's activism against the Pinochet dictatorship, the book pays specific attention to their feminist activism. Shayne also shows how both culture and emotions inspired and sustained the women's social and political movements. They Used to Call Us Witches should be read by those interested in social movements, women's studies, feminism, Latin American politics and history, and cultural studies. Will Trevor finally prove himself "the man" and secure the respect that he feels is his by virtue of blood and tribe? Does Nano have it in her to break free of the suffocating bonds of home and community and find love with Lithuanian beau Julius? Emigrants and Exiles Book Three, Volume Two【電子書籍】[ Henry A. Fischer ]

The isolation the Children of the Danube experienced from the upheavals of history in the rest of Europe would no longer hold true in the second half of the 19th Century and beyond. At the outset, Emperor Francis Josephs attempts to preserve the position of the House of Habsburg in the face of the rising power of Prussia among the German states would inevitably lead to a disastrous war. Austrias defeat set the stage for the rise of the German Empire and the struggle for supremacy in Europe among the major powers resulting in the catastrophic wars of the next century which would destroy the only life the Children of the Danube had ever known.

The agricultural sector was in a shambles in Hungary during the last decades of the century which had repercussions for the Children of the Danube among whom the landless were the fastest growing part of the population and among whom poverty had become a way of life. Land was expensive and simply unavailable. As in the past, the only remedy was emigration. The first wave of emigrants from Swabian Turkey sought their future in Slavonia recently opened for colonization. It was just the prelude for the massive emigration movement soon to take place to the New World.

Some of the surviving emigrants and exiles will meet in a railway station in a small town in Canada as the final phase of the Schwabenzug takes place and the Children of the Danube transplant their roots in their new Heimat.

City of Exiles Berlin from the outside in【電子書籍】[ Stuart Braun ]

"I like to walk around. When I first got here, I just walked and walked, not thinking about anything, just talking to myself." Iggy Pop, Berlin, 1977

Berlin: no man’s land, frontier, a city adrift in the sands of Central Europe. Destroyed, divided and held captive during a century of chaos and upheaval, borderless Berlin has yet remained a city where drifters, dreamers and outsiders can find a placeーand finally run free. In City of Exiles, Stuart Braun evokes the restless spirits that have come and gone from Berlin across the last century, the itinerants who are the source of the Berliner Luft, the special free air that infuses this beguiling metropolis.

" ... an uncompromising attempt to capture the spirit of the place, the city emerging like a constantly evolving Berliner cabaret that makes you want to go there and see for yourself." The Age

"Stuart Braun has produced a powerful piece of work which tells us things most of us did not know about Berlin and its shifting population of exiles. More than that, however, he raises important questions concerning the influence of place on the human psyche and the nature of belonging."Minor Literature[s]

“Essential reading ... Everybody’s in here, from the Expressionists of the 1920s to the Geniale Dilletanten of the 1980s, Rosa-Luxemburg’s pre-WWI Spartacists and the RAF to the American transvestites of the 1970s and the gang of digital exiles allied with Edward Snowden ...” Exberliner

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born in Sydney, Stuart Braun completed a doctorate in history before living across Asia, Australia and Europe and publishing widely as a journalist and writer.

Exile within Exiles Herbert Daniel, Gay Brazilian Revolutionary【電子書籍】[ James N. Green ]
|

Herbert Daniel was a significant and complex figure in Brazilian leftist revolutionary politics and social activism from the mid-1960s until his death in 1992. As a medical student, he joined a revolutionary guerrilla organization but was forced to conceal his sexual identity from his comrades, a situation Daniel described as internal exile. After a government crackdown, he spent much of the 1970s in Europe, where his political self-education continued. He returned to Brazil in 1981, becoming engaged in electoral politics and social activism to champion gay rights, feminism, and environmental justice, achieving global recognition for fighting discrimination against those with HIV/AIDS. In Exile within Exiles, James N. Green paints a full and dynamic portrait of Daniel's deep commitment to leftist politics, using Daniel's personal and political experiences to investigate the opposition to Brazil's military dictatorship, the left's construction of a revolutionary masculinity, and the challenge that the transition to democracy posed to radical movements. Green positions Daniel as a vital bridge linking former revolutionaries to the new social movements, engendering productive dialogue between divergent perspectives in his writings and activism.

The Sun and Her Stars Salka Viertel and Hitler's Exiles in the Golden Age of Hollywood【電子書籍】[ Donna Rifkind ]

**National Jewish Book Award Finalist

The little-known story of screenwriter Salka Viertel, whose salons in 1930s and 40s Hollywood created a refuge for a multitude of famous figures who had escaped the horrors of World War ll.**

Hollywood was created by its “others”; that is, by women, Jews, and immigrants. Salka Viertel was all three and so much more. She was the screenwriter for five of Greta Garbo's movies and also her most intimate friend. At one point during the Irving Thalberg years, Viertel was the highest-paid writer on the MGM lot. Meanwhile, at her house in Santa Monica she opened her door on Sunday afternoons to scores of European ?migr?s who had fled from Hitlerーsuch as Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, and Arnold Schoenbergーalong with every kind of Hollywood star, from Charlie Chaplin to Shelley Winters. In Viertel's living room (the only one in town with comfortable armchairs, said one Hollywood insider), countless cinematic, theatrical, and musical partnerships were born.

Viertel combined a modern-before-her-time sensibility with the Old-World advantages of a classical European education and fluency in eight languages. She combined great worldliness with great warmth. She was a true bohemian with a complicated erotic life, and at the same time a universal mother figure. A vital presence in the golden age of Hollywood, Salka Viertel is long overdue for her own moment in the spotlight.

THE JAMES JOYCE COLLECTION - 5 Books in One Edition Chamber Music, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles & Ulysses (the original 1922 ed.)【電子書籍】[ James Joyce ]
|

The James Joyce Collection - 5 Books in One Edition offers an expansive exploration of one of modernist literature's most iconic figures, presenting a comprehensive selection of Joyce's seminal works. This collection includes masterpieces such as 'Ulysses,' 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,' and 'Dubliners,' which collectively showcase Joyce's innovative narrative techniques, intricate symbolism, and rich character development. Through stream-of-consciousness prose and profound philosophical undercurrents, Joyce deftly captures the complexities of human experience, particularly within the context of early 20th-century Ireland. This edition not only illuminates his stylistic evolution but also serves as a vital historical document reflecting the socio-political landscape of Joyce's time. James Joyce, an Irish novelist and poet, is celebrated for his pivotal role in the modernist literary movement. Born in 1882 in Dublin, his profound connection to his homeland deeply influenced his writing. His groundbreaking experimentation with language, structure, and consciousness was shaped by his experiences navigating the tensions of identity, nationalism, and artistic expression. Exiles A Play in Three Acts【電子書籍】[ James Joyce ]
|

Exiles is James Joyce's only extant play and draws on the story of "The Dead", the final short story in Joyce's story collection Dubliners. The play was rejected by W. B. Yeats for production by the Abbey Theatre. Its first major London performance was in 1970, when Harold Pinter directed it at the Mermaid Theatre.
The plot is deceptively simple: Richard, a writer, returns to Ireland from Rome with Bertha, the mother of his illegitimate son, Archie. While there, he meets his former lover and correspondent Beatrice Justice and former drinking partner and now successful journalist Robert Hand. Robert was also Beatrice’s lover, and here the complications begin.

Inda Young has spent the last six years trying to perfect being virtually invisible, just a drab, boring twenty-something no one thinks to remember. She hopes to leave behind a painful childhood and secrets that culminated in public humiliation and infamy, and never look back.

It's a lonely sort of existence, but a safe one.

But, just as she's celebrating the first year of her employment at the Westerly Corporation as a web designer, her quiet, isolated bubble-life gets burst wide open when she unexpectedly comes across an enigmatic, all-too-attractive stranger. He turns out to be Dr. Simon Chryse, visiting the Westerly Corporation as a delegate from the island nation of Aur, and is involved in dangerous dealings Inda can't begin to comprehend.

As Inda attempts to help him, she finds herself embroiled in an ever-deepening and terrifying mystery, one involving magic, myth, and madness, and one starting to look all too familiar to her. All to soon, she finds her past catching up with her as she must face the truth of who, of what she is, even if it means separating her forever from the man she loves.

Through the Cat's Eye is the fourth book in the Exiles of Aur series. It can be read as a stand-alone, though it brings back some characters who figured heavily in An Amber Stone, Set In Silver, as well as characters from other novels in the series.

The Hoodsman - Courtesans and Exiles【電子書籍】[ Skye Smith ]

|

This is the seventh book in the Hoodsman series.

By 1072, after six years of rebellion against the Normans, the defeated Anglo-Danish nobility of England were either dead or in exile. Some exiles accepted young Philip of France's offer to be his mercenaries on Normandy's northern border, much to the annoyance of the Conqueror.

Meanwhile life was good for Raynar and Hereward in Flanders. Their ships plied the trade route between the Fens and Brugge. They had the backing of the Count of Flanders and allies in great Danish fleet that controlled the North Sea.

* * * * *

Early in 1102, Duke Robert and his barons went back to Normandy, so England became less risky for travelers. Eustace did not return to Boulogne, as his new wife Mary wanted to linger until Queen Edith's baby was born. It was an opportunity for him to visit the Honours of Boulogne.

* * * * *

About The Author

Skye Smith is my pen name. My ancestors were miners and shepherds near Castleton in the Peaks District of Derbyshire. I have been told by some readers that this series reminds them of Bernard Cornwell's historical novels, and have always been delighted by the comparison.

This is the seventh of my Hoodsman series of books, and you should read the first "Killing Kings" before you read this book. All of the books contain two timelines linked by characters and places. The "current" story is set in the era of King Henry I in the 1100's, while the longer "flashback" story is set in the era of King William I after 1066.

I have self-published twelve "The Hoodsman ..." books and they are:

Killing Kings

Hunting Kings

Frisians of the Fens

Saving Princesses

Blackstone Edge

Ely Wakes

Courtesans and Exiles

The Revolt of the Earls

Forest Law

Queens and Widows

Popes and Emperors

The Second Invasion
