|

"Faith Exiles" delves into the lives of religious figures exiled for their beliefs, revealing how these experiences shaped faith traditions. The book examines the interplay between religious conviction, political power, and social justice. Exile, often seen as defeat, frequently catalyzed religious reform and renewal.

For example, early Christian leaders, though exiled, spread their message, and medieval mystics, despite persecution, influenced religious thought. The book explores this phenomenon by first introducing the concept of religious exile and its prevalence across faiths. It then presents in-depth case studies, analyzing the circumstances, responses, and long-term consequences of exile.

Drawing from historical documents and interdisciplinary perspectives, "Faith Exiles" highlights the resilience of these figures, emphasizing their active role in shaping religious discourse. The journey through the chapters showcases how these exiles inadvertently strengthened their followers' resolve.

By shedding light on these experiences, the book offers a new perspective on religious authority, tolerance, and the state's role in religious expression. It emphasizes the resilience and agency of exiled religious figures, demonstrating how their displacement led to the dissemination of their ideas and the eventual transformation of religious institutions.

This exploration provides a framework for understanding contemporary issues of religious freedom and the challenges faced by religious minorities.

Riallaro: The Archipelago of Exiles【電子書籍】[ Godfrey Sweven ]

“DEAD, for a ducat, dead,” roared Somm, as he shouldered his gun and rushed to the beach. Nothing had come within reach of shot all afternoon till, in the thickening twilight, a flash of broad wings in the distance awakened our camp. “A wounded albatross,” shouted both my companions, as they peered through the shuttling grey of the evening, and watched the south wind, still wild with the force of storm, shepherd some baffled creature of wings up towards our nestling-place. “Some still stranger bird,” I thought, as we seized our guns and ran to the edge of the cliff. The sudden descent of night checked further question; and as the winged thing gleamed along the face of the precipice, three shots echoed across the sound, and, in a lull of the fitful gusts, we heard a dull plunge in the water far below. It seemed but a few minutes till we met Somm in the rocky hollow that was the harbour for our boat; he had rowed out and back, and was leaning over some dark object that lay in the stern. Not a sign of feather or anything that gleamed was there about it. It was the form of a human being, apparently dead. We bore it up through the bush with the tender care that diggers are wont to give to the corpse of a comrade. Our burden was so light that we expected to look upon a thin, emaciated body. But, as we laid it in the flicker of our hut fire, we were amazed to see the rounded form and ruddy cheeks of the dead stranger. We stripped him of his wrapping,ーa strange muslin-like transparent toga,ーand searched for the gunshot wound. Except for one broad bruise, there was no mark on the body. And then it began to dawn upon us that this had nothing to do with the flashing wings, or our shots, that we were guiltless of human blood. It was a case of drowning, but not yet dead. And we set to work to draw the clogging water from his heart and lungs. Slowly the breath began to come and the blood to circulate. The bosom heaved and we felt ourselves in the presence of another and a stranger human soul. What he was, whence he came, whirled through our minds in silence. Faint and in need of rest he manifestly was. We poured some stimulant down his throat and laid him on one of our rude beds of manuka and fern. We saw him fall into a deep and healthy sleep. And dawn was already threatening the east with flickering light when we went into the open and drew a long, sweet breath. We consulted together over the strange occurrence, and determined to search the fiord for traces of the winged thing that flashed out at our shots. Before we had gone far, we found a pair of huge fans that had drifted into one of the frequent channels amongst the rocks. They were not of feathers, but of some strong, transparent, and almost weightless material that did not wilt in the sun or the wet. We lifted them, and there hung by them dragging in the water filmy strings like the long tentacles of a medusa. We cut them adrift, and bore the strange wing-like floats up to our cliff. Each of them seemed to move on a pivot with ease, and almost rose on the gentle breeze into which the storm had now died. After full examination of them, we laid them far back in the cavern, which we used as our storehouse and larder, and thought no more about them.

Exiles, Entrepreneurs, and Educators African Americans in Ghana【電子書籍】[ Steven J. L. Taylor ]

Compares the political activities of African Americans who settled in Ghana in the 1950s and 1960s with those who settled in the 1980s to the present.

After repeated coups and periods of military rule, Ghana is now one of Africa's longest enduring democratic republics. Exiles, Entrepreneurs, and Educators compares the political proclivities of two generations of African Americans who moved to Ghana. Steven J. L. Taylor blends archival and ethnographic research, including interviews, to provide a unique perspective on these immigrants who chose to leave an economically developed country and settle in an impoverished developing country. The first generation consisted of voluntary exiles from the US who arrived from 1957 to 1966, during the regime of President Kwame Nkrumah, and embraced both Nkrumah and his left-leaning political party. In contrast to the first generation, many in the second generation left the US to establish commercial enterprises in Ghana. Although they identified with the Democratic Party while living in the US, and were politically active, they avoided political activity in Ghana and many identified with the Ghanaian party that is modeled after the Republican Party in the US. Taylor dispels some of the incorrect assumptions about African politics and provides readers with an insightful look at how developing nations can embark upon a path toward democratization.

Such Charming Exiles How Two Gay Women Learned to Live Openly and Love Fiercely【電子書籍】[ Marilyn Mehr ]
|

Betty Walker and Marilyn Mehr met in 1970 in a final graduate seminar on Humanistic Existential counseling at the University of Southern California. They were drawn to psychology, especially to the program at USC because it emphasized the power of the individual to change. Humanistic Existentialism focused on a person’s innate search for meaning and showed how conscious choice and action can give purpose to one’s life. These ideas echoed those of students everywhere questioning the traditional assumptions of parents, government, and culture.
Although they shared the same professional aspirations, they came from very different backgrounds: Marilyn grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles, in a conservative Mormon family. Betty came from a broken home in the South Bronx; her mother was both a hard worker and highly unstable. Neither of their fathers had graduated from high school. Both sets of grandparents were immigrants, Betty’s from a little village in Hungary, Marilyn’s from St. Gallen, Switzerland. Still, they were attracted to each other at once, as much for their differences similarities.
Shortly after they met, they became lovers. Each had erected her own closet of deceit, acknowledging their feelings only to a few close friends, never to their families. Living together, they did not march boldly out of their separate closets telling the world. They closed the door even tighter as they received our doctoral degrees in counseling psychology and accepted jobs teaching college level courses for the military in Frankfurt, Germany. Even though they were fervently opposed to the Vietnam War, they believed they could challenge their students to question authority and live authentic lives.
Although they had both become adept at hiding our sexual orientation from others, they were not prepared for the rigidity and homophobia of Army life. After two years, they returned to L.A. and found the courage to come out and help others to do the same. Not only were their lesbian and gay friends coming out of the closet, but were protesting about their oppression. The Stonewall Riots in 1969 had spurred gays and lesbians to become visible by forming social action groups. As they joined others in social protest, they experienced the euphoria of freedom unknown to gays and lesbians in history.
However exhilarated they were by being able to speak out about the destructive effects of discrimination, they were still neither looking at nor speaking about the habits and attitudes they had developed to hide from society’s condemning eye. Speaking out publicly in protest movements was not enough. They had to look to their silent selves that were still deceiving their families and covering their feelings with too much alcohol and too many affairs. As a result, they were both miserable. After several crises, they summoned up the courage to commit themselves to honesty: they confronted each other, found a good therapist, walked into an AA meeting, and began to unravel their self-deceptions. Their biggest challenge was to speak to their families-- Betty’s mother and Marilyn’s Mormon parents -- about their love for one another. To their credit, they offered only love and acceptance in return.
Theirs is actually a classic American story with a gay twist. It is the story of how through self-awareness, determination, and commitment, two women learned how to embrace who they are and to declare their love openly for all to know.

Sylvie Baker's memories hit a wall beyond three months ago. That was when she was discovered buried in the charred rubble of an apartment complex fire. She wonders if her past could possibly have been as strange as her three-month old life has been to date. As it is, she's not quite sure she's sane.

To begin with, she's periodically transported to a world of caves, black-tree forests, and a fairytale castle. She keeps finding little moonstones there, only to find herself back in "reality," in Portland, Oregon, again. Then there's the part where she seems to be able to heal people with the touch of her hand ? though at a cost.

Her brief life gets more complicated when she comes across another person in that other world, a man. Then her two worlds collide when she also finds him in Portland. He and others, who call themselves Scholars, seem bent on exploiting her "magical" powers. That is, assuming she's not imagining it all.

As Sylvie tries to solve the mystery of herself ? and stay alive ? she may discover that reality will need some serious redefining. She may find that she's part of a greater mystery that ties her to the secretive island nation of Aur, which changed the rules of reality long ago.

She may also fall in love along the way.

Welcome to the Exiles of Aur series, paranormal romances that tell the stories of loners and lost souls from the mysterious Aur, a place of myth, magic, and monsters. The Underground Girl is the sixth book in the sequence.
This study of the Napoleonic Exiles in America, which was first published in 1905, centers around “the unfortunate colonial enterprise called Champ d’Asile on the banks of the Trinity River in Texas. That undertaking had in itself no great historical importance, but the circumstances surrounding it throw, it is believed, a not uninteresting light upon the diplomatic situation after the downfall of Napoleon. The part of the narrative which relates to the “Napoleonic Confederation” was read at the meeting of the American Historical Association, in 1904, at Chicago.”

Tiananmen Exiles Voices of the Struggle for Democracy in China【電子書籍】[ Rowena Xiaoqing He ]
|

In the spring of 1989, millions of citizens across China took to the streets in a nationwide uprising against government corruption and authoritarian rule. What began with widespread hope for political reform ended with the People's Liberation Army firing on unarmed citizens in the capital city of Beijing, and those leaders who survived the crackdown became wanted criminals overnight. Among the witnesses to this unprecedented popular movement was Rowena Xiaoqing He, who would later join former student leaders and other exiles in North America, where she has worked tirelessly for over a decade to keep the memory of the Tiananmen Movement alive.

This moving oral history interweaves He's own experiences with the accounts of three student leaders exiled from China. Here, in their own words, they describe their childhoods during Mao's Cultural Revolution, their political activism, the bitter disappointments of 1989, and the profound contradictions and challenges they face as exiles. Variously labeled as heroes, victims, and traitors in the years after Tiananmen, these individuals tell difficult stories of thwarted ideals and disconnection, but that nonetheless embody the hope for a freer China and a more just world.

Exiles and Citizens Spanish Republicans in Mexico【電子書籍】[ Patricia W. Fagen ]
|

At the end of the Spanish civil war, Mexico was the only country to offer open refuge to the thousands of Republican emigr?s who fled from Spain in 1939?1940. Exiles and Citizens is a study of these political exiles, especially those with intellectual and professional backgrounds and ambitions. It focuses on their adjustment to Mexico, on their continued ties to Spain, and on their impact on Mexican development.

The critical dilemma faced by the Spanish exiles was that, despite having fought for their political and social ideals in Spain, they forfeited in exile their active role in Spanish history. In Mexico they found a political and social system that seemed to include many of the ideals that had inspired the Spanish Republic; moreover, they were able to incorporate themselves economically, professionally, and intellectually into Mexican national life. Yet, because they were not native-born citizens, they had little or no creative part to play in the politics of their adopted country.

For Mexico, the impact of the refugees from Spain was enormous. Integrated from the first into nearly all intellectual, professional, and cultural fields, their skills proved an important catalyst to Mexican development. Yet, outside these fields, Mexico was never an effective "melting pot." The Republicans themselves were divided in their loyalties, and the Mexicans, from the beginning, were reluctant to encourage the full participation of their guests in national affairs.

Two goals were shared by most of the exiles: to ensure that the world would remember the liberal, creative, and open Spain they had created and thus reject Franco; to show their gratitude by working for the benefit and progress of Mexico. These goals, although frequently contradictory, sustained the emigration and gave meaning to exile. The refugees tried to maintain their identity by coming together in formal and informal associations that were intended either to act on behalf of the homeland or to re-create the Spanish Republican structures and values in exile. To maintain a Spanish identity, however, proved difficult, and for the second and third generations in Mexico, the initial goals had already lost their meaning. For them, economic and professional, as well as familial, ties were strongly Mexican.

Spanish Republicans in Mexico represented a fairly rare phenomenon: a large group of skilled, relatively well educated immigrants to a country where persons of their attainments and status were not numerous. Moreover, as political exiles, they approached the problems of acculturation differently from economic emigrants. Patricia Fagen's study thus offers a further understanding of an important exile community and the characteristics that set it apart from other examples of immigrant experiences. In addition, the study sheds new light on the intellectual history of Mexico and the far-reaching effects of the Spanish civil war.

Left in Transformation Uruguayan Exiles and the Latin American Human Rights Network, 1967 -1984【電子書籍】[ Vania Markarian ]
|

This book takes an innovative look at international relations. Focusing on the worldwide campaign against abuses by the right-wing authoritarian regime in Uruguay (1973-1984), it explores how norms and ideas interact with political interests, both global and domestic. It examines joint actions by differently-motivated actors such as the leftist activists who had to flee Uruguay in these years, the Organization of American States, The United Nations, Amnesty International, and the United States. It traces language and procedures for making their claims. The chief goal, however, is to peruse the specific reasons that led these actors to endorse the central core of liberal rights that gave foundation to this system. A close examination of the available documents shows that even as they joined efforts to protest abuses, they were still pursuing their individual agendas, which is often overlooked in the existing scholarship on human rights transnational activism. The book pays special attention to the Uruguayan exiles, analyzing why and how leftist activists and leaders adopted the human rights language, which had so far been used to attack communism in the context of the Cold War.

WITH A FOREWORD BY EDMUND DE WAAL, AUTHOR OF THE HARE WITH AMBER EYES

SET IN THE ASHES OF POST?SECOND WORLD WAR VIENNA, A POWERFUL, SUBTLE NOVEL OF EXILES RETURNING HOME FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER FLEEING HITLER'S DEADLY REIGN

Vienna is demolished by war, the city an alien landscape of ruined castles, a fractured ruling class, and people picking up the pieces. Elisabeth de Waal's mesmerizing The Exiles Return is a stunningly vivid postwar story of Austria's fallen aristocrats, unrepentant Nazis, and a culture degraded by violence.

The novel follows a number of exiles, each returning under very different circumstances, who must come to terms with a city in painful recovery. There is Kuno Adler, a Jewish research scientist, who is tired of his unfulfilling existence in America; Theophil Kanakis, a wealthy Greek businessman, seeking to plunder some of the spoils of war; Marie-Theres, a brooding teenager, sent by her parents in hopes that the change of scene will shake her out of her funk; and Prince "Bimbo" Grein, a handsome young man with a title divested of all its social currency.

With immaculate precision and sensitivity, de Waal, an exile herself, captures a city rebuilding and relearning its identity, and the people who have to do the same. Mesmerizing and tragic, de Waal has written a masterpiece of European literature, an artifact revealing a moment in our history, clear as a snapshot, but timeless as well.

How pastors, scholars, and others can use Missional Action Research to make a real difference for displaced persons abroad

Christian scholars are often motivated to live the gospel by serving the vulnerable. But how do we put our academic research to practical use to help those in need? Christopher M. Hays explains how his interdisciplinary team of theologians, social scientists, pastors, and local partners combined efforts to support internally displaced persons of Colombia.

Over eight million people have been driven from their homes by violence perpetrated by paramilitary and guerilla groups in the past two decades. The Colombian government is unequipped to deal with the sheer magnitude of the crisis. To serve displaced persons in a more robust and holistic way, the Faith and Displacement project developed Missional Action Research. This innovative method incorporated direct leadership and participation from local churches and displaced persons with stakes in the research process. The resulting curriculum covered:

Training in trauma-informed mental health care

Harnessing the unrecognized skills and resources of the community

Empowering displaced people economically through microenterprises and other ventures

Supporting participants with effective spiritual and pastoral care

Weaving survivors’ firsthand testimony with interdisciplinary theology, Eight Million Exiles will impress readers with the urgency of this conflict and inspire them with the model developed to address it. Let a small seminary in Medell?n show you how to make a tangible difference in vulnerable communities.

|
James Joyce (1882 1941) was an Irish novelist and poet who is widely considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark novel which perfected his stream of consciousness technique and combined nearly every literary device available in a modern re-telling of The Odyssey. Other major works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His complete oeuvre includes three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe did not extend beyond Dublin, and it is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there; Ulysses in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of Ulysses he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, explaining, For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal. This edition of Joyces Exiles is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and is illustrated with over a dozen pictures of Joyce.

Gardens, Covenants, Exiles Loyalism in the Literature of Upper Canada/Ontario【電子書籍】[ Dennis Duffy ]
|

Scraps, tags, figments of the United Empire Loyalist heritage dot the Ontario landscape. Something of Loyalism lies in the very Ontario air and pervades the imagination of its people.

In Gardens, Covenants, Exiles, Dennis Duffy sets out to describe and analyse the effects of Loyalism on the literary culture of Ontario. He explores the enduring nature of an attitude of mind whose historical origins lie in the Loyalist settlements in the forests of Upper Canada. No single source can explain a culture's characteristic way of viewing moral, social, and literary matters. This study, however, reveals how one historical event and the mythology it engendered have helped to shape a province and its literature.

The collective experience of the Loyalists underlies Ontario's view of the Canadian destiny. Their defeat, exile, endurance, and their final mastery of a new land confirmed their belief that their own destiny lay within a larger imperial framework. But they lived at the same time as both North Americans and monarchists, victims and founders, heroes and the dispossessed. Writers in this culture, faced with the declining importance of the British connection and the rising of American presence, were ill-prepared by their political and imaginative lives to comprehend the vision of an independent nation. In our own time this has led to a renewed sense of fall, to a disillusionment that contrasts sharply with the feeling of 'paradise regained; that pervaded an earlier era.

The book is a study of dislocation, seen through vignettes of various authors and their writings: William Kirby's The Golden Dog, Major Richardson's Wacousta, Charles Mair's Tecumseh, and the Jalna series by Mazode la Roche. Contemporary analogues of the Loyalist habit of mind are pursued in the works of George Grant, Dennis Lee, Al Purdy, and Scott Symons: the journey returns to its Loyalist starting point, in pain, loss, and the sense of a vanished home.

Loyalism, both as fact and as myth, is one of the cultural forces that has given Ontario its sense of place. Professor Duffy concludes that in some way the culture of Upper Canada/Ontario remains continuous, that it has kept faith with its origins. His study heightens our understanding of a nation's roots.
