In "The Magnificent Wild West Adventures - Emerson Hough Westerns," the reader is transported to the rugged landscapes of the American frontier, where themes of heroism, struggle, and the raw beauty of nature intertwine with narratives rich in adventure and exploration. Hough's literary style combines vivid imagery and compelling character development, drawing on the romanticized yet gritty reality of the Old West. His work often serves as a reflection of the American spirit during the late 19th century, evoking the myths and realities that shaped national identity in a rapidly changing world. Emerson Hough, an American author and journalist initially captivated by the West's untamed allure, is noted for his contributions to Western literature. His firsthand experiences in the American wilderness and his deep appreciation for the land's history greatly influenced his writing. Hough's background in both journalism and literature allowed him to craft vivid narratives that resonate with authenticity, while also addressing the moral complexities of frontier life during this transformative era. This anthology is highly recommended for both aficionados of Western literature and newcomers seeking an immersive journey into America's past. Hough's storytelling not only entertains but also provokes thought about the historical context of the Westーa testament to his enduring legacy as a pivotal voice in American literature.

The Long Day The Story of a New York Working Girl, as Told by Herself【電子書籍】[ Dorothy Richardson ]
|

In "The Long Day," Dorothy Richardson weaves a narrative that explores the intricacies of consciousness through her pioneering use of stream-of-consciousness technique, predating counterparts like Virginia Woolf and James Joyce. Set against the backdrop of early twentieth-century England, this novel encapsulates the protagonist's daily experiences, delving deeply into her thoughts and emotions as she navigates the complexities of urban life. Richardson's prose is characterized by its rhythmic and poetic quality, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the subtleties of her characters' inner lives, thus reflecting the modernist literary movement that sought to capture the nuances of human existence. Dorothy Richardson, often regarded as a trailblazer of modernist literature, was deeply influenced by her own experiences as a woman in a patriarchal society, as well as her commitment to capturing the female perspective. Her journey as a writer was marked by her involvement in the suffrage movement and her belief in the necessity of exploring a woman's inner world. This personal and societal context provides a rich foundation for "The Long Day," where Richardson's unique voice emerges as a powerful commentary on gender and identity. Richly layered and thought-provoking, "The Long Day" is a must-read for those interested in modernist literature, feminist themes, and the exploration of consciousness. Richardson's innovative narrative style and acute observational skills make this text not only an important work in literary history but also a profound examination of the human condition. Readers seeking to engage with a pioneering voice will find an exceptional experience in this insightful novel.

The Girl and the Guardian The Apples of Aeden, #1【電子書籍】[ Peter Harris ]
|

Volume I of the 2000-plus page epic fantasy Apples of Aeden, twelve years in the making. Newly edited in October 2012, with many new coloured maps and graphics throughout.
This epic isn't for the casual reader! Be warned: this world will draw you in, and you will lose yourself in it, and as with Galadriel's realm, those who visit Aeden do not emerge unchanged. The world of the epic is ageless, esoteric, philosophical, and Romantic, exploring in a vast cycle what an intergalactic civilisation which truly honoured Love, Beauty, Truth, and Freedom might have looked like - and how it might have fallen, and how far...

The Narrator, a distracted Oxford history student, finds a cryptic manuscript connected with the Knights Templar which leads him, via a hollow yew tree and a skeleton clutching an artefact not of this world, to Chartres cathedral, and thence to a mysterious antipodean forest containing an ancient Portal.

Meanwhile Shelley Arkle of New Zealand has had a very busy 13th birthday. On the way North, summoned by her eccentric grandfather, she learned that she was adopted, her 'father' crashed the car, then she was lured into the dangerous forest of the Fairyhill Reserve, and through its Portal into the world of Aeden (sketchily remembered by humans as the Garden of Eden).

Waiting there for Shelley is a grim hermit warrior. She flees from him, and is picked up by a sinister black wagon. She is rescued by the wild Boy Raiders, but her glasses are smashed. The Boys deliver her back to the grim warrior: Korman the Outcast. He swears to be her Guardian, and together they flee the Kiraglim Trackers and Wardogs. In the cave of the learned Padrathad, Shelley eats the healing Apples of Aeden, and her eyesight becomes perfect.

She learns that Aeden was once the hub of a magical Republic of nine worlds, whose pillars were Love, Beauty, Truth and Freedom, and which once honoured the Balance of the Divine Feminine and Masculine.
Shelley realizes that the fate of Earth is linked with that of Aeden. She begins to accept the mysterious call to become the Kortana, or Jewel-caller, and find the lost Heartstone of the Tree of Life. Only thus can Aeden be saved from the fanatical life-denying Aghmaath, or thornmen. Then the lost Balance between the Masculine (Truth and Freedom) and the suppressed Feminine (Love and Beauty) will be restored and the Fifth Age will dawn.

But first they must seek the hidden refuge of Urak Tara where Shelley will learn how to become the Kortana. Along the way she meets (to name a few): the rebel Quickblade and his Boy Raiders; the wild Urxura (the origin of our unicorn myths) and their even wilder friends the elusive Evergirls; Ainenia, Lady of Aeden and exiled mistress of Avalon; the boy Rilke who gives her a blue diamond; their shared pet Worriette, a cute orphaned wurrier; the not-so-cute werewurriers; a dragon-snake; a burrow-dwelling gem-hoarding anklebiter called Bootnip (Korman's grumpy pet); the squabbling dwellers of the Bottomless Canyon; swindling agathra fossickers; a colony of poets and artists; Hillgard the rebel Guardian; and the happy Waveriders. She also falls in love twice. Guided by the troubled Korman (and sometimes guiding him) she learns many magical wisdoms, such as Walking in Faery, Guiding the Unfolding, Entering the Dreamweb, and Defence against Mindbolts and Mindwebs. Pursued by the Aghmaath, they are hampered by the fact that Korman long ago vowed not use Arcratine, his mighty firesword. One by one the remnants of the Old Order are being conquered, and they are drawn into battles and seiges as they seek the lost school of ?rak Tara.

When a fateful pact with Korman goes wrong, Shelley is left alone on an island on Lake Deadwater, deep in the thornfields. But a strange, forsaken creature from the lake comes to her aid, and together they escape, seeking ?rak Tara. She is now a true Rebel of Aeden - with a price on her h...

The Girl in the Painted Caravan Memories of a Romany Childhood【電子書籍】[ Eva Petulengro ]
|

Born into a Romany gypsy family in 1939, Eva Petulengro’s childhood seemed to her to be idyllic in every way. She would travel the country with her family in their painted caravan and spend evenings by the fire as they sang and told stories of their past. She didn’t go to school or visit a doctor when she was unwell. Instead her family would gather wild herbs to make traditional remedies, hunt game and rabbits, and while the men tended horses to make a living, the young girls would join the women in reading palms. But Eva’s perfect world would be turned upside down as the countryside became increasingly hostile to all travellers.

Eva describes the wonderful characters in her family, from her grandfather ‘Naughty’ Petulengro to her four beautiful aunts who entranced everyone they met, as well as the fascinating people they came across on the road. Moving, evocative, romantic and funny, The Girl in the Painted Caravan vividly captures a way of life that has now, sadly, all but disappeared.

The Diary of a Young Girl started two days before Anne Frank's thirteenth birthday. In 1942, the Nazis had occupied Holland, and her family left their home to go into hiding, as they were Jews. Anne Frank recorded daily events, her personal experiences and her feelings in her diary for the next two years. Cut off from the outside world, she and her family faced hunger, boredom, claustrophobia at living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. One day, she and her family were betrayed and taken away to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she eventually died.
It is a record of a sensitive girl's tragic experience during one of the worst periods in human history. This diary is so powerful that it leaves a deep impact on the mind of its readers.

Anne Frank:

Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank was a Jewish girl born in the city of Frankfurt, Germany. Her father moved to the Netherlands in 1933 and the rest of the family followed later. Anne was the last of the family to come to the Netherlands, in February 1934. She wrote a diary while in hiding with her family and four friends in Amsterdam during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II.

She lived in Amsterdam with her parents and sister. During the Holocaust, Anne and her family hid in the attic of her father's office to escape the Nazis. It was during that time period that she had recorded her life in her diary.

Anne died in Bergen-Belsen, in February 1945, at the age of 15.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, ebook, 9789380914312

The Girl Philippa【電子書籍】[ Robert W. Chambers ]
|

In "The Girl Philippa," Robert W. Chambers interweaves elements of romance, psychological intrigue, and existential reflection, creating a rich tapestry set against the backdrop of early 20th-century society. The narrative follows Philippa, a young woman navigating the complexities of love and identity, revealing Chambers' characteristic flair for lyrical prose and vivid character development. The book is reflective of the literary preoccupations of its time, steeped in symbolism and the exploration of the human psyche, while drawing on Chambers' own fascination with beauty and the transient nature of life. Robert W. Chambers, a prominent figure in the fin de si?cle literary movement, is known for his contributions to gothic and fantasy literature. His diverse experiences, from studying art to serving in the military, greatly influenced his narrative style and thematic choices. "The Girl Philippa" emerged during a period of personal introspection for Chambers, as he grappled with themes of disillusionment, the fragility of relationships, and the quest for personal authenticity, making this work a profound reflection of his artistic ethos. I wholeheartedly recommend "The Girl Philippa" to readers interested in exploring the intricacies of human emotion and the nuanced portrayal of early feminist ideals. Chambers' ability to blend lush prose with poignant themes makes this novel a compelling read that resonates even today, offering insight into the eternal struggles of love, self-discovery, and the human condition.

Down Girl The Logic of Misogyny【電子書籍】[ Kate Manne ]
|

Misogyny is a hot topic, yet it's often misunderstood. What is misogyny, exactly? Who deserves to be called a misogynist? How does misogyny contrast with sexism, and why is it prone to persist - or increase - even when sexist gender roles are waning? This book is an exploration of misogyny in public life and politics by the moral philosopher and writer Kate Manne. It argues that misogyny should not be understood primarily in terms of the hatred or hostility some men feel toward all or most women. Rather, it's primarily about controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the "bad" women who challenge male dominance. And it's compatible with rewarding "the good ones," and singling out other women to serve as warnings to those who are out of order. It's also common for women to serve as scapegoats, be burned as witches, and treated as pariahs. Manne examines recent and current events such as the Isla Vista killings by Elliot Rodger, the case of the convicted serial rapist Daniel Holtzclaw, who preyed on African-American women as a police officer in Oklahoma City, Rush Limbaugh's diatribe against Sandra Fluke, and the "misogyny speech" of Julia Gillard, then Prime Minister of Australia, which went viral on YouTube. The book shows how these events, among others, set the stage for the 2016 US presidential election. Not only was the misogyny leveled against Hillary Clinton predictable in both quantity and quality, Manne argues it was predictable that many people would be prepared to forgive and forget regarding Donald Trump's history of sexual assault and harassment. For this, Manne argues, is misogyny's oft-overlooked and equally pernicious underbelly: exonerating or showing "himpathy" for the comparatively privileged men who dominate, threaten, and silence women. ^l

A beautifully written story of friendship, discovery, myths, and magic that the London Times called "reminiscent of fantasy greats such as Philip Pullman and Neil Gaiman."

Legends say that the island of Joya was once a place where songbirds sang in every tree and the islanders were free to come and go as they pleased. That was before the harsh-ruling Governor arrived, and ravens drove out the native birds. Now there are no songbirds, and the people are forbidden to travel beyond the forest that separates them from the rest of the island.
But for Isabella, the legends of her island home have always seemed like more than just stories. And when a series of mysterious events shakes the community, it’s Isabellaーdaughter to the island’s only mapmakerーwho will lead a party of explorers into the forest in search of answers. As the group ventures deeper and deeper into the island, dark secrets begin to surface, and the legends Isabella has listened to all these years show signs of coming to life.

Debut novelist Kiran Millwood Hargrave draws on the cultural folklore of the Canary Islands in this richly told story of a girl’s quest to map her own place in a world that legends alone have shaped.

Advance Praise:
"[R]eminiscent of fantasy greats such as Philip Pullman and Neil Gaiman." --The London Times

The Girl from Farris's Love, Loyalty, and Betrayal in 20th Century Chicago's Seedy Underworld【電子書籍】[ Edgar Rice Burroughs ]
|

Edgar Rice Burroughs' "The Girl from Farris's" is a compelling narrative that gracefully intertwines adventure, romance, and social commentary. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, the novel unfolds in an exotic tropical paradise, as Burroughs immerses the reader in vivid descriptions and energetic prose that capture the era's spirit. The author employs a romanticized adventure style reminiscent of his famous Tarzan series, yet this tale diverges with its exploration of societal constraints and human relationships, particularly through the lens of love and resilience. Burroughs, an author known for his captivating tales of exploration and the exotic, drew upon his own experiences as a writer in the early 1900s, when themes of colonialism and the machinations of civilization were prevalent. His travels and observations around the world inspired the rich settings and complex character dynamics in this work. "The Girl from Farris's" showcases not just Burroughs' storytelling prowess but also reflects his nuanced understanding of human emotion. This novel is highly recommended for readers who appreciate adventurous narratives interwoven with deeper themes of love and societal critique. Burroughs' engaging style and rich characterizations make it a delightful read for both fans of classic literature and those new to his oeuvre.

The 'Mind the Paint' Girl A Comedy in Four Acts【電子書籍】[ Arthur Wing Pinero ]

|

Arthur Wing Pinero's "The 'Mind the Paint' Girl" is a poignant play that delves into the dichotomies of social class and the emotional turbulence of human relationships. Set in the bustling backdrop of Edwardian England, the narrative explores the life of a young artist's model, whose experiences illuminate the tension between aspiration and reality. Pinero's masterful use of dialogue and character development offers a rich tapestry of both humor and pathos, positioning the work firmly within the context of the modern British theatre that sought to reflect contemporary societal issues through realism and lyrical expression. Pinero, a leading figure in the theatrical world of his time, drew upon his experiences in both law and theatre to craft compelling stories that critique societal norms. His works often reflect the struggles of the individual in relation to larger societal forces, influenced by his own encounters with ambition and the complexities of love. Establishing himself as a playwright during the shifting paradigms of the late 19th to early 20th century, Pinero became known for his ability to weave complex emotional landscapes into the fabric of his narratives. Readers and theatre enthusiasts alike will find "The 'Mind the Paint' Girl" to be a profound exploration of the human condition. It invites reflection on the societal constraints that shape our lives and the aspirations that drive us. This timeless work provides both entertainment and insight, making it an essential reading for those interested in the intersections of art, class, and desire.
